It's a shame but I highly doubt all of Mike's intricate ghost strokes, accents, rebounds and just the general complexity of everything he does can truly be appreciated in a live arena audio environment. Even with the best acoustics there's no way the audience can pick all of it up.
He explained in an interview that they're closer than they look, he actually has to barely raise his arm to reach them and it's much more confortable for him.
I gotta tell ya Mike, I really love how you're allowing for your fans to have easier access to content that we can enjoy from you and DT. What a wonderful performance might I add and thank you for the super cool point of view!
Ralf Egger I think he’s actually kind of boring. Doesn’t have the feel. Marco,Aquiles,and Lang have more feel and creativeness. As I honestly don’t see the technical part of him. It think it’s all very basic. Idk that’s just my opinion.
Gerardo Aguas-Baterísta/Drummer - there‘s always ‘better’ .... it’s quite meaningless in the end though. ;-) Music is not just a competition of who is faster or better. In fact I would claim that Thomas Lang’s music who surely technically is a great drummer is very boring and uninvolving. Mangini’s blast are still so good that normal drummers can admire them without someone telling them how average he is... ;-) He is an amazing drummer and performer and it’s pretty clear why he made it in the Dream Theatre. The audition was extremely difficult.
Looks like he was playing absolutely perfect without any point of effort, looks like magic..... and most important always trying to connect the beat with the people, with a smile in his face. I always will love mike portnoy's theater but im in love with mangini`s theater. Can´t wait to see him live in London 2023!

Mangini's hand and foot independence, dexterity, endurance, consistency is the greatest ive ever seen. The amount of practice and effort is very evident, it is like the metronome is following him

And after the Audition, it's the first DT song I have seen Mangini playing. And he crushed it since this event. Mangini, you're amazing! Saw you in New Brunswick, NJ, and had the chance to see you close by on the Meet & Greet. I was frozen and could not remember anything to say. Some days after I just remembered that I would have wanted to say to you that I also played the Quads on my high school drumline in Brazil and I love your drumset layout!
He did a drum clinic at the store where I used to teach. He used my lesson room to warm up in. Afterward some of the staff, Mike, and former Pearl rep, Doug Smith had dinner together. One of the most memorable nights of my life. I remember standing next to him to see which one of us was taller. I think he was by an inch or two. I want to say that was in 2000, or 2001.

First off this isnt a competition between portnoy and ManGini , that said, Not only does mike make it look effortless, but it is so spot on. Its mind blowing how fast and articulate he plays, Massachusetts breeds some exceptional Talent, because along with the hard work I know he and others have put in, there is a certain level of God given talent in them as well.

I saw Mike do a solo at the Astoria London with Steve Vai. At one point he played poly tempos. He was maintaining two tempos. Isolating his brain! Half the audience got it, the other half started booing. I will never forget. It was astonishing.
Yeah, I remember him in Steve Vai concert, too, in 2001. I did not know him back then. In solo section he did crazy shit, mimicking every beat Vai mumbled in his month. They also had a badass guitarist/keyboardist, too. He also mimicked Vai's mouth blabber melodies first on guitar, then on keyboard then finally left hand on guitar right hand on keyboard at the same time. Absolute shit!!!! I never forgot that. I don't know his name. He wore a funny clowny outfit.
@@jelleepit yeah. After writing my message I looked it up. Actually it was 2000 Vai's Ultra Zone tour. And I learned it was Keneally. I even found a video of Bulgaria concert on youtube. The only video from that tour interestingly.

I think open handed drummers tend to look slow or barely moving compared to the standard closed position. Theres something about crossing your arms over the hi-hat and snare that adds to visual flair. There are, of course, exceptions like Gene Hoglan.
I was in the audience in Hamburg. It was great. Now that I see this from this perspective it's just mindblowing. I'd love to see more of your drumming from that angle... :-)
