People seem to mistake Kuvira not fighting for fear. That's pure respect for one of the most legendary earthbenders to ever exist. I'm not saying Kuvira would win or lose, i'm just saying Kuvira didn't want to fight Toph out of sheer respect for her. We need to remember one of Kuvira's specialtys is those metal plates and who invented Metal Bending? Toph! And don't forget, one of Toph's daughters raised Kuvira, gave her a family. To Kuvira Toph is like a hero, someone to look up to, someone whom she deeply respects. It's the main reason she didn't fight. And she also knew Toph was there just to protect her family, so there was no need to fight her just to loose the respect of her own followers. If a fight ensued, i could blow on Kuvira, even if she won. That's how heavy is Toph's name among earthbenders. One's gotta be careful around her.

Which version of Toph are we talking about though. We never really saw her in her prime. It's either she was old or a kid. As a kid, she was amazing. At her prime, she might have been stronger and faster.

Kuvira is intelligent, light on her feet, and capable of lots of subtle/tactical bending. While Toph has the seismic sense, Kuvira can actually see. I’m not saying Kuvira would absolutely beat Toph in her prime, but we are staning Toph a bit too hard if we think Toph would completely dominate in a fight against one of the strongest villains in the entire series

No subtle bending works when your opponent can literally sense every aspect of your movement AND the earth you use as a weapon. Just look at her debut fights as a kid, how she senses every part of her opponents movement in real time and counters it perfectly.
Kivuria could probably defend herself for a decent while, shes very evasive and smart but I just do not see (ironic) a single attack making it past tophs siesmic sense. Air benders, firebender and water benders all have a chance against toph but earth benders do not, unless they were to obtain the seismic sense oc.
The only thing Kuvira has that Toph doesn’t, is clearly eyesight. Other than that, Toph would wipe the floor with Kuvira’s face

The author is aware that Toph is strong (too established in ATLA to be nerfed). If she fights Kuvira, either Toph has to be nerfed in order to keep the spotlight on Korra, or Kuvira gets defeated immediately ending the show.

Toph learned and mastered Earthbending at young age. She defeated those so called best earthbenders (The Boulder, Hippo,etc.)on the arena. Invented metal bending that later she used metal door of the airship fleet as an armor to defeat those boosted firebenders. She can also sense if a person is lying or telling the truth. She also mastered in seismic sensing and sand bending. Also, probably mud bending. She is the legendary blind bandit and the runaway.

It boggles my mind that it’s even being discussed. I may be biased, but for good reason. Toph is THAT girl !! Don’t get it twisted. She was a GIRL when the last airbender took place, and managed to handle a bunch of earth bending “pros” in the arena, lifted a damn library deep under sand (sand which she couldn’t really bend), mastered sand bending in under a week, fought against the fire nation, pioneered metal bending and so much more. Yes Kuvira learned from her daughter but that’s so much more different than learning from THE Pioneer herself. Toph was blind which made her earthbend non stop just to be able to see. Kuvira didn’t fight Toph not out of Respect for her, but because she knew Toph wasn’t to played with. Toph didn’t fight because she had already her family, and as Toph said that’s all she came to do. Can we remember how Toph disarmed everyone when her family was outnumbered ? She simply made an earth tsunami. With her wisdom, experience and knowledge of both earth and metal bending, toph is one of many strongest bender right beneath the avatar. Just like Iroh, she chose and picked when and who she wanted to fight. The “scramble” with Kuvira was simply the tip of the iceberg, an iceberg Kuvira knew she wouldn’t want to see flipped. Old Tooh said “sometimes you gotta leave it to the Kids, why do you think Katara never got involved with the water tribe civil war”. Katara is one of the most powerful water benders, could easily turn the tides during the civil war, but it wasn’t their place. Remember it’s a fictional story, they chose not to because it’s simply not their time anymore. Zuko, Katara and Toph although stopped getting involved how they did, still helped in their own way. Toph watching over everyone in the swamp, Katara the greatest healer, and Zuko serving with council to help with his experience.
No toph destroys in all categories. Kuvira is simply and completely outclassed and out of her league.
Prime Toph would not even break a sweat in a fight against Kuvira...

Toph herself said her daughters never really picked up metal bending even though they are the strongest at it after kuvira. Toph is constantly using earth bending for location & she can now sense ppl cities away from her. Toph is just too fking broken & in her prime she would play with kuvira as a rag doll. There is no bender stronger than prime toph other than the avatar or a blood bender.

Bumi, on the other hand (and many other earthbenders) still remained strong physically in old age. We also never see Toph take on someone on Kuvira’s level, red lotus, ect. She mostly fought against Azula and her crew. But their encounters/fights were never anything out of this world. We really only see Toph go crazy against very weak characters or background characters. She should’ve gotten a field trip with Zuko. They need to release that new movie.

Adult Toph used all the techniques kuvria did so Toph likely invented most of them as she got older as she opened the metal bending school and taught her daughter's.
