Excellent video as usual Rich. One reason I keep old connectors and banana plugs around. You saved me a lot of time and kept me from overcharging the other cells. Thanks Rich
Excellent explanation of the positives and negatives and the whole video deserves applause, thank you very much indeed. I have a GT Power X2 which has a bunch of leads, one of which has a female deans and other end is the end that you describe, so thin blade up to remove the outer bit and job's a goodun. Can't thank you enough
very informative video. I wasn't even looking for that but the explanation is very good. can this charger from dynamite also save lipocells from the bottom,,,, e.g. if one of 3 cells is deeply discharged? I have this problem with my battery. my orion charger can no longer charge the battery, a message just pops up. I'm not sure if I can charge a cell in lipo mode from the charger, because the device shows a fault if I don't connect a balancer plug, but I'll try.
Excellent explanation. Thanks. But I have one question: once you have restored the pack to 4.2v per cell and use it on the aircraft, will those damaged cells go back to being unbalanced? In other words, do I have to do this whole process again? Thanks
Just bought 2 6s battery's and they both showed up with cells between 1.4 -1.6 v I immediately contacted the seller and this is what they recommend I do. I don't think I should have to do this to a new battery. Maybe I should try and return them .
so simple and so obvious, its genius. yet my hobby shop couldnt figure out how to do this when i bought a battery from them with one cell out of balance that wouldnt balance no matter what.
i know Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my login password. I love any tips you can give me
@Russell Kasen I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im trying it out now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Unfortunately it doesn't work for me, my charger won't let me, error connection. You have a better charger than mine I have this model: ruclips.net/video/TkIDyutreO0/видео.html
How are the cables for a 2 cell battery, because I have 3 The black one is the negative And how to plug the small cable to the second cell? Is the 2th and 3th cable?
Assuming you have a decent lipo charger.......if you normally set your charger to 4S to balance charge the entire pack now just set it to 1S. The charger will apply the correct voltage.
@RCINFORMER can we use this to discharge cells individually ? because here is my cells on a 3s lipo: cells: 1s 48% - 3.850v, 2s 73% - 3.980v, 3s 69% - 3.958v let me know thanks.
You set 5A, n charger limited you to 2.4A. interesting. Was wondering on amps limits for charging via balance leads. Using on 1.5A at moment. Balancing a 13s8p. So slow, so if you think 3A is ok, let me know. Cheers
If you're going to discharge and recharge the pack after you do this little trick, why not just skip the added risk and hook the battery up to your charger the normal way, set it for storage mode (this will bring all the cells to ~3.85 volts), and then do a balance charge to 4.2 volts? If you have a battery with a cell that won't stay within 0.1 volts of the other cells, it's time to check the internal resistance. And if that test fails, soak it in saltwater for a week or two and throw it away..
There is really no risk if it is done properly. As i indicated, i charged and discharged it several times with no luck bring up 3 of the cells in balance charge. I was able to individually bring up all three to the others.
@@RCINFORMER Key words - "If done properly". I've seen too many guys that don't know how to use their Lipo charger the right way. I know your method will work, but some guys are going to let the smoke out trying it. Personally, I would only use your method on a cell that was so low that the charger is refusing to charge it.
@@txkflier That's just it... after several attempts to balance charge & discharge... this was the only thing that got them up to full charge. Now that those cells have come up, I will cycle them a few times to see if they charge, discharge & stay balanced before putting it in a model...
@@RCINFORMER I'm sure you know this, but many don't. Some chargers default to the non-balance charge mode because it's faster than the balance mode. In the non-balance mode, the charger shuts off when the cell with the highest voltage reaches 4.2 volts. It doesn't care what the voltages of the rest of the cells are as long as they're within the voltage limits. In the balance mode, it will continue to charge the rest of the cells until they all reach 4.2 volts (or whatever the full charge voltage is set to). If you don't switch to balance mode occasionally, your cell voltages will most likely drift further apart over time. Since I fly mostly EDF's and have a 1200 watt charger, I always charge in balance mode so that I'm less likely to push a cell below 3.3 volts at the end of a flight..
Hi Rich, I'm facing similar issue with my 6S battery pack. While charging cell # 2 & 4 are not charging to its full capacity and is below 4 v. I currently have Imax B6 charger and while charging should I select normal lipo charging mode with capacity cutoff at 15 Ah or should I disable the capacity cutoff. Please help. Thanks in advance.
I use a Hybrid Charger. RadioLink CB 86 Plus. Normal chargers charge through the main power port and balance though the balance port. (Drain) When cells reach maximum charge voltage the Charger still has to charge them all in series. At some stage it gives up doing the balance charge to prevent damage by overcharging the cells that are already full as kit cant drain the fully charged cell within its discharge wattage specification. (It Overheats). The RadioLink charger I mentioned. charges through the balance leads. It stops charging each individual cell as it reaches full charge. If one cell is low it continues to charge that cell on its own. Your battery has 2 damaged cells. Those cells went into chemical breakdown when it sat and leaked charge. HobbyKing ship those batterie at 17% charge to achieve airline guidelines. You may be able to recover those 2 cells but very unlikely. You should throw it away, it m ay cost you a model. I have a procedure where I storage charge / drain new batteries. (Some from China are actually nearly fully charged on delivery) Put them in an Excel Spreadsheet with a storage charge date. I then check the Excel SS every 6 months and reset and storage charge when necessary. Good luck with your battery. That would have been an expensive one.
@@RCINFORMER Yes they will, You need to confirm that they will discharge at an even rate. I use a EDF test stand to stress test batteries. I have 4, 6 ,8, 10, 12S elf Fans for this test. If there is any damage in the cell it will not retain the Watt hours and will drop voltage faster than the others. Do you remember what the voltage was when you first charged? If it was 3V and above they should be OK, if it was below 3V they would her suffered some damage. Hard to estimate how much. Without the test above.
Discharge the battery so that cell is at 4.20v then stop the charge then individually charge the lower cells to 4.20v or a quicker way is to discharge the high voltage cell using the nimh setting as this setting doesn’t look for a balancing board but can be unstable compared to this videos method

If the Lipo remains in the dealer box for quite some time ... until the customer buys it, how can you say it's not their fault, it's your fault?
Thats a good point, and why you should always check new Lipo’s upon Receipt with a cell checker and before doing anything else see what state of charge it is-then if there is any issue you have that option to contact the retailer immediately and see if you can get a replacement or refund-once you start charging/discharging/balancing you risk the retailer refusing to cover your lipo under warranty. Remember any imbalance greater than 0.5v is of concern and the lipo should be treated with extreme care (according to most manufacturers)🙂
This seems more complicated and time consuming than it needs to be. Why not just buy a charger that has a battery balance function? I'm guessing you paid a lot of money for that charger. There are plenty of LiPO chargers that will balance a pack for as much or less.
Excellent video as usual Rich. One reason I keep old connectors and banana plugs around. You saved me a lot of time and kept me from overcharging the other cells. Thanks Rich

Quick question, does the charger observe this cell when it is not connected to the balancer port?
The voltage read 4.2 on the meter before you started, did your meter not notice it needed to be charged?
Hi Rcinformer
Do you know a way how to balance the Dji tb47's batteries.
Hi Rich what is the highest différence between cells that you could still use the battery regards ray
I'm not sure the exact number. The closer the better.

what kind of plug/charger lead is that? you put 2.4 amps through those tiny wires? seems like a lot

where can i find such a prong?

Does this corrective measure lasts a reasonable amont of time?
It should
did it stay balanced after a couple of use?
yes still using the lipo!

6:28 so you leave the capacity of the pack the same, cause they balance leads/cells are wired in series?
