    personally i love the fact that the gayblade has a paopu keychain when in one piece, while destiny's embrace has a paopu keychain all by itself without needing to combine with something else. sora and riku's hearts and their destinies are intertwined, whereas kairi's destiny is all her own. like it's saying her life doesn't have to revolve around someone else. she has a paopu, a Destiny, all to herself. she gets to decide what it is and whether she wants to Embrace it :)

      I never knew what exactly to make of the Keychain on Destiny's Embrace, but I love your explanation. It's so poetic and empowering for Kairi. I hope she realizes this soon.

    Here is an interesting One. Before Sora and Riku go to Traverse Town in Dream Drop Distance, Riku, A Human, becomes a Dream Eater unconsciously. In Union Cross/Chi, it is revealed Chirithy , the first Dream Eaters, created by the Master of Master, become as One Being with their Wielder. They clear their Wielders' Dreams, and if the Wielder passes away, the Dream Eater/Chirithy does, too. Literally One Heart.
    I note that when Sora passed across the Barrier of the Final World to Unreality, Riku Dreams himself over there for a year. And Kairi... doesn't and cannot despite being Asleep For A YEAR!
    TL:DR Riku's Soul is literally in Sora's Heart and Body and Astrally follows him around.

    • @Rose-SunG524

      It's strange too, cuz we have Kairi with Chirithy ears on her hood to seemingly match both the kh3 trio outfits AND the ddd trio outfits, but SoKai fans REFUSE to take it & run with it for some reason??? Like Kairi COULD be a dream eater to Sora in mirror to Riku conceptually (not counting her not being able to really reach him in KHMoM but damn if she didn't try) & yet this isn't a common idea to play with. Like Kairithy is right there. Kai=Chi. cmonnnnn, they gotta give smthhhh
      Also the Dream Eater being 1 with their wielder & then RIku being Sora's dream eater will never not make me go crazy. These boys really get all the romantic tropes without saying anything & I love that for them

    Something I wanna ad to the whole "Fairy Godmother is the one to send Riku off" thing is that they actually made a modell for her and hired a VA JUST for this scene in Remind and ONE more scene in Melody memory. They could have saved time, effort and money by for example having Merlin send him off, but no, it had to be Fairy Godmother. Because it is important that it is her.
    Also, regarding DDD being a sleeping beauty parallel: there is actually a Norse legend that fits even better as a parallel to it. Namely the legend of Sigurd and Brunhild. In this legend Brunhild is told to marry, but she refuses because she only wants to marry a man without fear and for her defiance she gets put into a deep sleep inside a set of armor. Then Sigurd comes along, goes through some trials and breaks Brunhilds curse by breaking her armor. It's the when she falls in love with him.
    1) Nomura loves to use norse mythology, it's very obvious only from looking at Union X.
    And 2) if you know the plot of DDD you know that Sora at the end of the game gets put into a deep sleep and gets trapped inside of Ventus' armor, which Riku has to defeat, after which it brakes away from Sora. This and Riku answering very personal questions (which in jp make it clear that they're about one specific person Riku is afraid of loosing and wants to get back and protect) causing Sora to wake up just screams "true love's kiss equivalent" to me. Like, Riku basically confessed his feelings for Sora inside of Sora's heart and this was the last thing needed for Sora to wake up. Like wtf? How much more obvious do you want to make it?
    Btw I can recommend The Violet Howler's video on norse mythology in KH. There are some other very interesting things regarding Soriku in that video.

    for me, the number one thing that made me genuinely believe that soriku is at least extremely intentional is the differences of dont think twice vs the japanese version Chikai, the lyrics are different, extremely romantic, hard to place as it being from sora or kairi perspective but extremely easy to place it as riku's. Okay the wild thing about the potential paopu "hypocrisy" tho is that even in KH1 the pieces we get across the Japanese and English translations lead in different directions.
    In the Japanese script Riku says:
    その実を食べさせあったふたりは必ず結ばれるどんなに離れていて もいつか必ず
    The two who feed each other the fruit will be united one day, no matter how far apart they are.
    But the English script ofc says:
    If two people share one, their destinies become intertwined.They'll remain a part of each other's lives no matter what.
    This difference alone has caused a LOT of confusion in the English speaking community because as seen in KH3 Sora and Kairi each have their own separate fruit where the vast majority of people have consistently envisioned sharing a single fruit. But on the theorization side while I can agree that no matter how you slice it there CAN be romantic connotations there, I feel like the English translation of Riku's line DOES properly convey that it's not necessarily a romantic act - which would line up with Sora not really understanding what love is and the concept of the gesture confusing him. Also though if you look at Kingdom Hearts 1 as if it were a stand alone piece of media, Sora's ultimate understanding in this game alone of "My friends are my power" (Connected hearts are my power, in Japanese) feels like it is making an emphatic point that Connections are what's important, and that the Paopu is a way to connect hearts (platonic OR romantic).
    Also though it's Selphie, when she restates the legend, who adds a pointedly romantic spin:
    たいせつな人とパオプの実を食べさせあうとふたりがどんなに離れてても必ず結ばれるんやてはぁロマンチックやねいつかためしてみたいわ
    If you feed your special someone the Paopu fruit, no matter how far apart you are, you are bound to be together... that's so romantic!
    But then in this repetition we see the very first use of the phrase "たいせつな人" (Taisetsuna hito) (Special Person) in the series, which feels like SUCH a huge thing and there's been plenty of analysis of the way this phrase has been translated across other games that I won't rehash here other than to say that again if we're looking just at KH1by itself there's only two other times that たいせつな人 comes up - when Peter tells Tinker Bell that he's not going to leave Wendy behind and when Beast joins the party initially in Hollow Bastion. In both of these instances One character (Peter, Beast) is telling another (Tinker Bell, Sora) that they aren't leaving their love interest behind (Wendy, Belle), and what do we see at the end of Kingdom Hearts 1?
    Sora making the choice to go after Riku and find him, rather than leaving him behind to go home with Kairi.

    • @CocoaCatniptv
      @CocoaCatniptv  8 месяцев назад +13

      I’ve seen people talk about the differences in Japanese and English regarding the paopu. I definitely thought for years that sharing meant sharing the same fruit, honestly sharing the same fruit would come off more romantic than two seperate ones. Still though neither line about the fruit really states it has to be romantic. Also regarding the kh3 paopu scene Sora’s VA said they recorded a version where they didn’t share the fruit, and that he didn’t think sharing it had to be romantic. I think that’s why the gayblade feels more romantic to me though. Their hearts connect and make this rainbow keyblade with one paopu on the end. They don’t need to share a paopu to be part of each other’s lives because they’re already so connected without it. The paopu is just a symbol of their destinies being one.
      You make such a good point about kh1 though, it ending with Sora going after Riku vs staying with what many would believe to be his most precious person. Chain of memories starts as him trying to find Riku until his memories are messed with and he gets sidetracked. The use of aitsu in the Japanese version of the game hints that Riku is actually the one most precious to him as well. Even in English where they change aitsu to “she/her” it still comes off as odd that he started his journey in castle oblivion to find Riku but suddenly things are about Kairi at the end?
      But yeah it’s pretty consistent with Sora that he’s okay leaving Kairi behind so long as she’s safe, meanwhile Sora and Riku constantly chase after each other.

    • @Fragmentsinfractals488
      @Fragmentsinfractals488 8 месяцев назад +10

      I think the Two fruits sharing causes a "Star Crossing" and that is the symbolism Sora and Kairi are unintentionally invoking. The Fate to never be Lovers, to miss each other like Stars that pass by each other.
      Whereas Riku is Unconsciously giving Sora One, because it isn't Star Crossed and is instead, One Heart, like the Combined Keyblade.
      It is different symbolism for people who pay attention.

    • @Fragmentsinfractals488
      @Fragmentsinfractals488 8 месяцев назад +6

      I also want to point out that Sora and Kairi sharing the fruit ... doesn't really... Work. In the Keyblade War, Sora and Kairi get separated Twice (Second time, Sora literally falls out of her Reality), while Riku's Heart Station is in Sora, for some reason, (Riku's Light as the Kingdom Key inside Sora) , and Riku dreams himself into Unreality when Sora's there For A Year.
      Kairi cannot do this. Melody of Memories specifically show her fail to do this.
      So, it shows the Papou only seems do what we assume it would do (Romance), when One Papou is shared, and only for Sora and Riku and their merged Heart Blade. It is like the Papou only works for the Child of Destiny who are born of the Island of Destiny.... or something. Cough Master of Masters 5D Chess cough.

      The thing is, Sora understanding at the End of KH1 is actually, "Even in the Deepest Darkness, there is a Light that never goes Out". And after Sora learns this from Kairi's Grandma, He uses it to Save Riku by Triggering the Light in Him, a Light he calls Kingdom Hearts.

      I have thought about it, and I realize Meteors are Shooting Stars that don't Cross. And Riku gives Sora One Papou that don't Cross. Further, the concept of Wishing upon a Star (Literal Disney Magic) occurring when Riku promises to knight for Sora ... hmm. Not to mention Namine's Fake Charm is a Star.

    It's romantic, NOT just because the keychain a Paopu- it's also because Kairi & Sora shared Two Paopu's while Sora & Riku share just One.
    It only becomes high-key romantic when two people share A paopu together :3❤

    • @CocoaCatniptv
      @CocoaCatniptv  8 месяцев назад +15

      Yeah I think most of us assumed sharing the paopu would be sharing the same paopu, not two paopus and feeding each other. Also the fact that when Sokai share the fruit, kairi has to downplay her intentions for Sora to even agree. Meanwhile with Soriku their hearts come together to create a colorful keyblade with one(not two) paopu keychain!

  • @oras7745
    @oras7745 8 месяцев назад +11

    Yeah I 100% agree that the Papou keychain on the Gayblade doesn't have to be romantic. If you say the fruit is definitely romantic because Sora and Kairi shared one, then you have to apply the same thing to the keychain and vice versa.
    What the fruit represents in the end is an intertwining of faits which in the case of Sora and Riku is even further illustrated by the braided cord on which the Papou Fruit hangs.
    What I still find very interesting though, is the fact that Sora and Riku's Combined Keyblade even has the fruit (to show their fates being intertwined) without ever sharing a Papou Fruit or doing anything similar. Which imo could be a hint that their fates are intertwined, because Riku gave Sora his necklace (aka his "crown") to Sora, thereby connecting their hearts and intertwining their destinies. That of course assumes the Necklace Theory is true, but it would explain so many things. And it also fits if Riku is actually the Child of Destiny, which I wholeheartedly believe. It makes just so much sense if he is and ties in so many things.
    God, I love Kingdom Hearts.

  • @shaesullivan
    @shaesullivan 8 месяцев назад +9

    Hi there.
    Here's something interesting to think about when it comes to these two.
    1. What do they become if the other isn't there?
    We know that Sora has codependency issues, however, so does Riku, but he constantly focuses on Sora as the center of his thoughts and well-being, even going so far as to self-mutilate (in a manner of speaking) when it comes to being away from him. Riku giving up his sense of self, even if only physically, to ensure Sora's safety through the defeat of Rokas is clearly a sign of this.
    2. What are the others willing to do for one another?
    Sora is clearly willing to go to extremes for his friends, and strangers, however, Riku has a firm sense of who he will and won't shed blood and sweat for. He's never really shown to be willing to do for King Mickey what he is for Sora, going so far to even outright abandon the other and ally with whoever he needs to for Sora's sake. We know that he found Ansem the Wise and helped him commit various atrocities to secure Sora's safety, even willing to kill to ensure that Sora will become 'whole'. (I believe that it is suggested that he kidnapped/threatened Namine to help repair Sora, not 100% sure, but would it be such a leap in logic to think that he did so even if it wasn't outright stated?)
    3. When the pair are apart how long is it before they find one another?
    Looking at the main three games - KH1/Chain of Memories/KH2 - you start to notice a pattern between the pair, specifically that when one of them is lost the other immediately goes on the search for them. The ending of KH1 was clear on this when it came to what Sora wanted, however CoM was equally clear on this fact when it came to what Riku was willing to do for Sora's sake, the fact that he was even willing to commit himself to darkness for this cause is very interesting, because it technically happens twice. In the pre-ending for KH2 Sora and Riku are lost in the World of Darkness, and Riku is more than ready to be trapped in this realm with Sora, despite knowing that it will warp the two of them, he's used the portals of darkness to travel between realms since he didn't have a Gummy Ship. That Sora is able to accept this, even if he doesn't understand the specifics of this happening speak volumes to their brotherhood with one another, since, ostensibly, this is a death sentence for them as who they were, as the more they become immersed in the dark realm the more than realm takes over their consciousness, Aqua in KH3 proved this. However, we must then ask what this realm does to those within it...
    4. The question of their Hyper focus and Determination towards their goals.
    Sora loves people to an almost self-destructive level, he WILL do whatever it takes for those around him, but Riku won't. Riku only does what he has to do FOR Sora. He was shown to go through a lot for Kairi in KH1, even kidnapping others and siding with whoever can get him what he wants, but once Kairi was no longer a factor his entire focus shifted to Sora, to the point where he was even willing to fight the other to protect him, Remember Dream Drop Distance's final boss is Sora's waking nightmare. This is why Riku becomes a 'Master', because he is willing to hurt the person who he has shown the most dedication for if it means protecting said individual. A fact that is easy to forget is that becoming a master is not only about skill, Sora has more than Riku thanks to his many adventures, but is also about having wisdom and understanding and the determination to make hard choices. In KH3 we see this again, because when all is lost Riku is still able to keep a cool head and do what he feels he must to protect...Sora.
    5. And finally, a matter of purpose...
    When Sora goes somewhere Riku follows. When Riku goes somewhere Sora follows. Kairi doesn't. She stays and waits. A constant theme with her is waiting for purpose to be given to her, we see this as a factual happening in KH2 when she is dragged around by others (Axel/Riku) and thrown into a situation. She is able to get herself out of trouble well enough, but her determination to do so is always predicated on WHO is in control, to the point where she is given a Keyblade by Riku to defend herself instead of summoning her own, which is a symbol of her needing others to give her a purpose instead of finding her own. It has always been established that A Keyblade is physical representation of the heart's desire, and both Sora and Riku have long since manifested their purpose, to the point where they literally became one truth in the Combined Keyblade, which is a mix of light and darkness, just like the X-Blade that Xenahort wanted.

    • @Fragmentsinfractals488
      @Fragmentsinfractals488 8 месяцев назад +8

      6. It is implied that Sora being Riku's Light is what made Riku immune to Darkness, a thing Xehanort (No Heart X) literally doesn't get. I theorize Xehanort doesn't understand Love except as a thing to Manipulate with. So, this positive aspect confuses him.

Think about these things without going ferallll like what do you meannnn their hearts blend together to not only make the theme of the series; a heartbeat, with the romantic name; a keyblade which are made from the heart (with a fruit of connection not just the fruit but MADE. with their HEARTS), but ALSO 1 subconsciously dives into the other's heart to protect them????? What do you MEAN they have dialogue that play out parallel to disney couples???? You can't just DO that & it be on accident! You don't just "make a 'standard' romance" & leave all that out, but give it to the other??? & have 1 not even understand what love is but clearly wants to understand??? when their so call obvious love interest that everyone goes "oh you guys like each other obz cuz boy+girl ya kno?" like???? If it's right there in your face, why does it keep falling flat??? in a series that has couples find their true love in also every mini story???

    Sora and Kairi didn't really share a paopu though. They each ate their own paopu, which I think is really important to note, and is even more important to the "gayblade". Because when you look at the keyblades before they fuse together, they have different keychains. It's only when they fuse and become one that it switches to a paopu. Two people sharing one paopu.

    The thing about the Paopu fruit is that Kairi and Sora don't share a single fruit like they're supposed to, instead they have their own fruits that they just eat together. If they shared a single fruit that would have definitely implied romance. Eating two separate fruits is just friends eating together.
    Sora and Riku share a fusion Keyblade of their halves coming together to make a whole, and their keyblade has a single fruit not two. Riku and Sora share a single fruit unlike Sora and Kairi who just eat their own separate fruits. That to me is the major difference between how each Sora pairing uses the paopu

    This might sound strange coming from a Soriku shipper myself but I don't think Sora needs a love interest in the main games. Becuase I'm not a fan of Sokai and even though I think Sora and Riku would be an awesome power couple, I'd be really worried if Square Enix and or/Disney were to make it canon because it could warp the fandom into something... ugly... maybe even divide us all

      i agree, i dont think they should really make sora have like, an official pairing. honestly id be happy if they just laid everything out in the open after everyone had made so many theories and stuff you know? so people are free to ship whoever they want with all the evidence in the world! i also definitely think some people would have not very nice things to say if the developers ever did make sora get into a relationship.

      I mean….fandom already is ugly though. Leaving it ambiguous forever is only going to make it so people continue to argue about what’s canon/what Nomura intended, etc etc. At least with a definitive answer, the homophobes drop the series, or if sk happens instead we can all stop wasting our time thinking kh was actually intricately written with incredible layers.

      @@CampingforCool41 your right fandoms are ugly (just ask those so called Marvel or Star Wars "fans") I just don't want what happened to the Owl House fandom to happen here. In said fandom when Lumity became canon some of the toxic Lumity shippers became so cold and heartless towards ships like Lunter or Luz x Edric for just simply existing. Granted some of the ships are terrible like shipping relatives together but ones like Lunter are harmless. The non toxic Lunter shippers litterally didn't do anything wrong and yet they get hate bombed for it for just simply disagreeing. I'm worried if Sokai or Soriku becomes canon that's what will happen all over again

      @@CampingforCool41 no. In fact I actually like the ship and think it's cute. It just seemed to cause a really bad dominio affect. That or maybe I just began noticing more and more after the show ended and during it's run of season 3. But that aside while a ship being canon is good thing if done right but there are some franchise where I don't even want ships anywhere near them. Take Sonic for example. I'm really worried that if Sega ever 1 day decides Sonamy becomes canon that could ruin the fandom even more than it already is. Which by the way is a lot. If Sonamy becomes canon other shippers like Sonally, Sonaze and even Sonadow shippers will be relentlessly mocked and bullied by toxic Sonamy shippers even more than some of them already are. Even as a Sonaze shipper myself I don't want it to be canon because of how much trouble it could cause. I'm just so scared of history repeating itself

    I think its funny because I am very much not a fan of Soriku. Maybe I'm weird but as Sora the second half just drives me crazy. But I didn't realize that there was a Paopu fruit at the end of it.

  • @captain_saus
    @captain_saus 8 месяцев назад +4

    Where im open to however the story goes theres a few holes id likento poke at, the paopu fruit just signifies a bond in destiny, the romantic implication came from riku and sora fighting over who would share it with kairi, the waltz may be romantic, it doesnt have to be, i believe they were talking about the waltz vers. Of dearly beloved specifically being the song sora and rikus heart make in tune together, they have known eachother their whole lives and they are very life compatable, they fight well cause they know eachothers style and how to use those styles in tandem, its like to hearts doing a waltz. The whole not understanding love shows his questioning and growth, he sees things and starts to wonder which leads him to learn, sora undoubtedly has a crush on kairi in kh1 and riku and him have lil competitions over it. Either way the story works, as long as it makes sense im all for it

      The thing with KH is right now things are still up to interpretation. The paopu doesn’t have to be romantic, but it also can be. It’s not just Riku making it romantic, Selphie too sees sharing the paopu as romantic. Sora having a crush on Kairi can also be interpreted differently as well. Yeah you could say in kh1 he has a crush, or you can look at it as others around him suggesting he should like her and obv the fact he wants to beat Riku at something. As for Riku, it’s pretty clear that he’s less interested in Kairi and more interested in doing anything that gets Sora’s attention. He’s afraid of being left behind by Sora in kh1. That’s why he’s so bothered when Sora makes other friends. Anyway..again it’s all up to your own interpretation. Thanks for being so respectful. 😊

    • @Fragmentsinfractals488
      @Fragmentsinfractals488 8 месяцев назад +10

      A few points to consider. When Riku first bring up the paopou, He mentions it when Kairi has gone ahead and doesn't use her name. It is only after Sora just throws it on the ground that he brings up Kairi the next day, and only as spiteful Joke. A read of this is Riku wants to share It with Sora but doesn't want to out himself, and when Sora doesn't get it, starts mocking him with Kairi. It is "PAY ATTENTION TO ME". the subtext.
      Second. Dearly Beloved is also a phrase used at the beginning of Marriage Vows.
      Third. As Cocoa Catniptv mentioned, In the Novel, Sora when drawing the Cave Drawing of the Paupou specifically thinks "If only I could beat Riku". Not "I want to be Kairi's boyfriend", just the idea that winning against Riku would make Riku see him.

    • @CampingforCool41
      @CampingforCool41 8 месяцев назад +13

      Another few things to add about Riku’s feelings and “fighting over Kairi”: this interpretation can easily be gleaned from the games alone but there are also short stories and novels (written by someone who has also written for the games, chosen by Nomura himself because as he says she’s one of few people who fully understands the story) which reveal even more clearly Riku’s actual feelings. For example in one short story it’s a memory of the race where Riku makes a bet that whoever wins shares a paopu with Kairi, told from Riku’s perspective. In this short story Riku has just seen the paopu drawing Sora added in the secret place and so he impulsively blurts out that bet out of jealousy. But jealousy of who? It becomes clear that Riku himself doesn’t even understand his feelings- but he admits he can’t push himself to win the race. Why? Because he doesn’t actually care about sharing the paopu with Kairi. It was all about Sora. Wanting Sora’s attention, positive or negative. We see how desperate he is for Sora’s attention in kh1, even when he already has Kairi to himself, even when he feels abandoned by Sora, he can’t admit that he still cares to Maleficent, but then immediately asks Sora to come with him to save Kairi. It was ALWAYS about Sora. Then in the CoM novel Riku is reflecting on the night the islands fell, and Kairi asks about Sora. At first Riku seems jealous “, Right. Because Kairi would only think of Sora.” But then immediately admits to himself, “But I was the same way. When Sora and I were together, we could go anywhere. I really believed that.”
      Literally admits he’s only ever thinking of Sora, the same way Kairi is only ever thinking of Sora.
      But of course, feelings at that age are not simple and Riku was not ready to accept his feelings as they were. Didn’t even understand them. So yeah, it’s complicated, but at this point it should be clear his real feelings weren’t towards Kairi.

      Iunno..I personally think Sokai is less likely than SoRiku. I mean for one…kh3 gives them some moments..but that’s about it. SoRiku have their moments too, and Sora spends a good chunk of his journey during kh3 talking about Riku and never mentioning Kairi once. Meanwhile kairi is writing letters to Sora that she doesn’t intend to send, and in the novelization she cuts her hair because she noticed Riku cut his hair and wonders if Sora likes short hair. The paopu scene is more awkward than romantic…. Obviously right now a lot of stuff is up for interpretation, but the fact that Riku is going to Quadratum but kairi is staying behind doesn’t give much hope for Sokai in my opinion.
      I personally think KH3 Sokai was meant to be friends growing apart. That’s why you have moments like Kairi writing letters, but not intending to send them. Honestly it’d make sense that they’d grow apart, cause when have they actually spent time together since kh1? They’re reunited in kh2 only for him to end up leaving again for the mark of mastery exam. Them spending time together at the end of kh3 felt more like them reconnecting before he inevitably fades away. Again though..she’s not going after him..she’s staying behind, which doesn’t provide much room to develop a romance. Just my opinion though.

      I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but KH3 has a lot of translation errors, and, that includes a lot of the apparent sokai moments. The English dialogue often implies much more romance than the original Japanese.
