Alex would you reccomend the second drill with the alignment stick for a driver? Iv got massive tendencies just now with over drawing snap hooking the ball with my driver more subtle with irons but I'm sure I'm flipping the hands and not turning through? Is the alignment stick drill between the arms the fix ?
@AlexElliottGolf thank you so much for this video. My biggest swing flaw is the same as Rick’s, where my upper body stalls out and my hands kind of go outwards. My instructor just tells me to hit punch shots, but it never really translated into my full swing that well. Really excited to try these drills though.
Hasn't RS just got a typical 90s style swing where players were taught to swing from L to L, as opposed to a more modern body rotation driven swing with passive hands? Ultimately the former can generate more club head speed but has less control over face path relationship, whereas the latter keeps the face square almost entirely throughout the swing and results in a more solid contact despite less club head speed.
Exactly. I have a similar swing. As a junior and young golfer in that era you had to "flip" to get speed. Lead hard with the hips and flip the club hard through impact. I have struggled with ball striking as well. Thats what learning with bad equipment and archaic teaching gets you.
While I agree and am a fan of RS. I feel his problem is he knows too much about the game. RS is so focused on taking a simple 9-iron shot and then forcing a harder PW, with a "slight draw" with half spin, etc ,etc ,etc . Just hit it straight without all those extras. Not every shot needs to be a career highlight.
Completely agree - you can tell by the way Scheffler has the club bisecting his upper arm in the downswing DTL view, whereas RS has the club laying along his forearm. Two different releases - but they can both be effective.
This exactly what I have been working on since my last lesson. A feeling of the hands coming round a really tight corner and exiting low and left so that the butt end of the club is much closer to my lead thigh at around a 3 o'clock position. When I can do that and consistently have the club head at that position pointing up the difference in the golf swing and the results are astonishing - the swing feels effortless and the ball flies 10-12 yards on average further. I will never be the longest hitter in the world but getting a 6i that instead of carrying 156 yards carries 168-170 yards is a game changer
I hope Rick takes it in the spirit in which you gave it Alex. I know when I get sloppy I get handsy like this through impact. It does impact people of all handicap levels at certain times. If I’m unbalanced and looking for a bit more from a club I can get this for sure if I don’t think about it first. Knowing your swing tendencies is the best way to keep yourself in the zone.
Alex, thank you for this video. It has come at a perfect time. I suddenly started to struggle with my irons while hitting my driver well. I will be using these drills at the range on Thursday.
Well done Alex, a very fair assessment of Ricks swing given that it is one very small sample. Rick generally does a great job when you think that there could be a million people watching and critiquing his every swing but even the best players in the world have input from knowledgable coaches who themselves could not survive on tour, but that does not mean their input is not valuable. Great drill and kudos to you for that brave video, more like that please.😊
Rick just posted a video on his HIT channel where he tried Jumbomax grips. He specifically talks about how he is a very handsy golfer and the grips helped force him to be more body rotational.
That fitting could’ve been even more revealing if Rick had tried the correct size using the fitting chart, and not the XL version for clicks just because that’s what Bryson uses🙈🤣
He also said, like the idiot he is, that he thinks a big grip would make sliders slice more. He's clueless and he always always always needs to find negativity
Fantastic yet simple instruction. The drills shown in this video would help many of the same people in this comments section who were triggered by you mentioning Rick shiels and therefore not particularly interested in the content in this video. Keep it up mate.
I’ve been swanning around 12 h/cap for months. Tried something completely new last week. Severe wrist cup (job Rahm). Took a while to feel comfortable, but the ball compression is insane. Rising 8 irons. Higher spin. Straight shots. Ball compression is everything.
Awesome video, think this might help. Been hitting it good, fairly straight, with the odd nightmare left hook. Lucky enough to have a launch monitor, found my path was really inside with a face closed to path, result when matched straight. Tried everything with limited success, but got a feeling of my turn my left side through ball, was looking for a drill rather than a feeling to help, think these could be just what I need. Thanks
If you want to help Rick's game, teach him to pitch the ball and get his expectations in line. It's infuriating listening to Rick talk about making birdies when he's making 8 bogeys a round! Just make a bloody par rick! 😂
this i think is the exact same issue i have, i used to have a nasty slice, bought a sim practiced for months and changed my entire swing. whilst doing that i stopped hitting right entirely and now can only draw or hook a ball, i think this is the reason why
As I got back into golf after 2 years. I found myself watching a lot of Rick. The more I've played and improved I found that I'm watching less and less RS, and more of this channel among other's as well. Good vid Alex!
Rick is good for entertainment, not lessons. I highly recommend Golf Sidekick, best advice by far and I’ve done all the RUclips, read books, and 2 years of Golftec lessons.
@@jameslaughter5183 Danny Maude isn’t bad but if I hear him say “the golf swing is a circle” one more time,I’ll jump off a bridge. He’s just too repetitive
I watched him do a review of the Jumbo-Max golf grips and he struggled with them because he could feel that he couldn't use his hands to close the face. He even said that he was going to have turn his body to more than usual to close the face at contact. It generally works for him with his usual clubs, but for most of us, manipulating the club face with our hands is a recipe for disaster.
Since I've stopped watching people like rick and yourself and just swing the club my game has improved. I've never had a lesson in my life not been fitted for clubs and I do alright
But you just watched the video. 🙂 You make a good point though. One can get overloaded with information, not to mention misunderstand the online instructor.
Rick Shiels is a PRO!!! Pretty sure he can fire off an 84 without any drills or help from you!!! That was sarcasm just so nobody feels the need to message me. Great content as always.
Rick does this on purpose. He tends to be “too proud”. We’ve all seen his videos when he hits a club that might not be traditional, or balls etc and hits them better and helps his game. But he thinks he’s better than he is and sticks to blades, traditional clubs, stiffer shafts etc. he doesn’t swing hard, he doesn’t use his lower body properly. This was shown when he tried to speed train with Bryson. He never got faster no matter how hard he tried to swing harder. He forces his “natural” draw because it’s not. I’m a natural fader of the ball. When I do draw it, I think about the club closed like Ricks past impact. Sometimes I hook it, sometimes it’s good and others I hold it off too much and goes right. Just like Rick. But I don’t force the draw to pretend to be something I’m not. Now, I’m not trying to go after Rick with what I’m saying, just my observations. B4 u go ripping on me, saying what do I know? I admit, I’m not a pro, far from it. Got down to a 1 handicap years ago, hover in the 3-5 range now. Would be better if I played more, but life gets in the way. I have however been playing for over 30 years, played high school and college golf. I’m no slouch. I do know what I’m talking about. ✌️ 🍻
Well spotted Alex, sign of a good coach, always step in when others can't see the flaw. Remember the the presenter channel fighting rules from Ron Burgundy, Anchor Man " no hitting the face area" meeting in a back carpark in the Manchester soon area 😲.
This is the opposite of what a pga trainer taught me. I have to rotate my hands like Rick or my face is to open at impact. I have trouble compressing the ball as well and my miss is a slice. If I try to force speed on a shot I will pull it straight left though lol
The way I see it. There is a modern swing and a classic swing. They have a different release. The modern swing may be great for young, fast, flexible players who use their body to get the speed. The classic swing I find can get very good speed from the wrists. I stink at golf but I learned one thing. Some RUclips coaches will teach a modern element and then maybe a classic element. It is important if using a coach to make sure they are teaching one swing, and it is the swing you want. Random tips of different style swings mess us people up.
I think you missed the point. Watch Rick for 18 holes. How many shots does he waste hitting a pull draw and hitting an over draw? Rick's goal is to break 75; if he incorporates this method he'll soon have the goal to break 70.
I have never seen Alex golf. I have seen videos of Rick golfing at brutally tough golf courses from the tips. I looked up Mottram Hall and the slope rating is 113? Is that correct? My main "criticism" of Rick is that he too often tries to do too much with shot shaping. When he is doing a lesson video it is always a very good shot, just like Alex, lol. When playing though, his attempt at muscling a flighted draw 7 iron from a possible flyer lie doesn't always work out. I would love to see Alex play 18 at Royal Troon. Him, Danny Maude, Saguto, Crossfield, Corgano, Paul Wilson, whoever.
IMHO RS is a very handsy player AND he tends to use shafts that are too stiff. So your analysis (and correction) makes sense. But I also think he could compensate with weaker shaft settings. BTW - Hope you two get to play a match.
Shots fired! But also lets be honest... there will be a response from Rick and both youtubers will get a ton more views. I see what you guys are doing. Well played. 😜
@@AlexElliottGolf Fair enough! Appreciate you both by the way. I only started playing back in March/April and you, @RickShielsPGA, @DanielMaude and @brysondechambeau have been ridiculous. No way amateur players like myself could've advanced as fast as I feel I have, without a coach, before the days of RUclipsrs like you guys.
Coach almost broke the hosel on my 9 iron doing that first drill. Having the left arm pinned to my chest for that long into the follow through also gave me a sharp pain in my lower back. I hope you have malpractice insurance. 😂
I always thought that the hands had to somewhat roll over to release the club. My miss is usually to the left as well but that came about because I had a miss to the right at first. I didn't have much distance and when I started to release the club "roll my hands over" I pulled my shots more to the left but I gained 20 yards so I just aim more to the right. It doesn't always work because sometimes I hit it straight too but the extra distance is nice, I can hit my 7 iron instead of my 5. Do you still want to release the club head and how and when do you do that without shutting the clubhead after your strike the ball? Thanks for your videos!
I had your same exact issue. I often missed left, and the miss was much more powerful. On a good swing it was the power pull. I realized that my good swing had a closed clubface. Very recently I saw a video where Ben Hadden had a routine for taking his left hand grip from the side. Other people pointed out that Adam Scott does this as well. The result for me is a consistent grip, with a bit of a different wrist angle or something. The new grip is weaker than my old grip, but now at contact the club is square. I hope this helps. I suffered a while with that power pull.
Can get Good impact with both swinga, problem is that Ricks way of swinging is a lot more timing dependant, that is why he is inconaistant. A day when he is a little of it will be snaphook/ pushslice all day long
Some are more hands and some lees hands and some no hands I put a towel under my arms atm I’m only hitting sand wedge it’s workin a treat also sometimes I’ll play open club face draw as I come in too much with a closed club face also I found that if use a grip trainer it works a treat you can’t close the face and gives you N grip compared what’s taught today strong grip , a strong grip is good for those who have great control my personal option Rick should use a grip trainer and work on a neutral grip , grip is the No1 thing that many coaches don’t look at and fix I’ve had 15 y of coaching ant not one coach ever looked at my grip
His timing is off because of an extended wrist position. Rick steepens the club too much in the backswing and thus do not have enough time to shallow out the club path. Dan Whittaker tried to get him to flatten the wrist at the top of the swing.
Well, you've got it exactly right, Alex. We all love an appreciate Rick. Period. However, we very often feel for him, when he falls back into his draw shots, making him exasperate so much. At times, he had found a solution, i.e. his match with Ricky Fowler for instance, where he was very good, without his draw. But he keeps falling back into it. So, yes. Please Rick, take this up and develop a preshot drill to get this into muscle memory and we'll all cheer you on while you break 75 and go in the red.
In the words of Harry Hill, there’s only one way to settle this…….?! Why stop at RS?! Call out Rory! I dare you, I double dare you….. ((c) Pulp Fiction)
I know people are upset about this but as a fan of Rick Shiels, i am not mad at this - first, he gives a lot of props to Rick & his swing ( Rick goes a lot of things right) but, like everyone on this thread, he has stuff to work on - this guy could have picked anyone that we know & broken his swing down ( everyone except Carlos Franco & Ernie Els- haha).. second, I am always shocked that Rick & I are the same handicap - Rick should be a +2 at worst - seriously. I hope Rick watches this & hears the feedback & drops his score rather than listening to the folks who want to turn this into a rap battle . Ps, I love Rick’s channel
DON'T WORRY, he is now trying to hit a fade with the same swing faults and a new driver! and to think he used to be ranked one of the best teaching pros in the country.
Player and teacher here for 52 years. Without watching your video Rick has a nasty hitch in his takeaway that makes him terribly inconsistent. His club head is literally higher than his right shoulder before the shaft is parallel to the ground. I’d have him go watch Steve Stricker swing videos for a week before we hit any balls. I get the guy is a RUclips sensation, but his golf swing has some flaws he’s probably been fighting since he was very young. He’s gotta tighten that swing up before he’s ever going to improve. If I swung my clubs like that I’d fall over lol.
To be fair, Rick knows he is a "handsy" swinger....he's said as much in a few videos. I don't know if he'd be keen to rebuild his swing that he's been using for years. And - for his channel, it isn't so much about playing great golf - I mean how interesting would a break 75 video be if he was shooting below par?? 🤣🤣🤣 This is definitely the swing mechanics being taught today - and make a great deal of sense. However could be a struggle to adopt for someone who has been swinging in a different way their whole lives.
Its interesting to see that EVERY coach tries to fix a bad clubface control with a techical approach. Why not doing it the other way around? Start to train youre clubface control. If you do so, youre technic will change automatically. There are lot of things you could do. For example: swing slower and shorter until you can feel how to control the clubface. Dont think about youre swing. The only thing you should try is to have youre clubface square at impact. If you train that some houres a week youre clubface controle will increase a lot! There a lot of other ideas to improve without a technical aproach!
Look at the hips at both golfers at the finish. I think that's why his face is closed so much more. The club is coming through with hands more than hips at that point. Definitely more of an inside out swing for rick with scotty having a more on plane swing.
Actually i don't think Scheffler is higher at the top of the backswing .... Rick is simply blocking the top by pushing his chin up instead of having his head dipped down for more freely down swing and less movement .... head/neck pushing back will restrict any forward moving in sync with the body... just try it yourself ... also Rick seems to have no clue that less movement with hands so that arms can get to work in sync is a swing while his action is a "HIT" ... somewhere ;) ..... Love the guy though .... most of us do .... ALL of us want him to do the work...
Rick Shields is a very average golfer. When Rick asks "Can I?"....*break", "beat"?? etc. Don't waste time watching because the answer is always No he can't.
So many of you concerned over Ricks feelings. Lets be honest, in a match with Crossfield, etches, finch, maude, robinson and rick…i put money on the table Rick takes last. His swing is too inconsistent and will fail him like it does every single break 75. We all like/love/adore Rick and his channel is top notch, but to me hes not a great golfer, just pretty darn good. He would be wise to listen to Alex imo. Rick would be wise to hire any of the guys or another coach for a good spell and slay the dragon hes been fighting for yrs. No offense Alex, cant out you in the match until we see you play a bit. Great lesson though. ✌️

Coach almost broke the hosel on my 9 iron doing that first drill. Having the left arm pinned to my chest for that long into the follow through also gave me a sharp pain in my lower back. I hope you have malpractice insurance. 😂
😂😂
Great tip, thanks Alex
You picked the right RUclips golfer to analyse mate. You should have focused on his nonexisting chipping skills, though! 😉
Incredible video Alex!
There are all kinds of funky swings, but what matters is the position at impact, nothing else!
Can get Good impact with both swinga, problem is that Ricks way of swinging is a lot more timing dependant, that is why he is inconaistant. A day when he is a little of it will be snaphook/ pushslice all day long
I agree. Draw becomes a hook. Misses left a lot.
Alex v Rick! Let’s see it!
Thanks signed Mr Shields
Intended? "Toe-tally" different? I like it!
rather than a tee peg, I tried clipping weeds out of my lawn, last summer, it saved on tee pegs, but I've got WAY more weeds that need attention.
Calling out the big dog! “Check out the balls on this kid”.
great lesson ALEX thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Really good love your videos easy to follow
Comparing Scottie to Rick… Rick could do the same to you and we would have the same video.. or adeguo at Scotties level?
Haha yes
Spot on! 👏🏾
Brilliant,your great Alex
😂😂😂
Fair.
3:53 How did you record and control two videos from an iPhone? Also, does the 5:27 drill makes chicken wing easier?
This isn’t an iphone camera
No drill for Scottie ? !
Not a big fan of the thumbnail, ngl. Good info, good breakdown, but just dont need "rick is wrong" in a thumbnail.
Well he is wrong is certain aspects unfortunately, just like i am 😁
Rick vs Alex. Come on. Let’s get it arranged!
Why don’t you do a match with Rick. You do great instructional videos, but no one has seen ya play. Extend the offer.
Alex plays loads on his other channel, he's scary good
@@robster230 didn’t know there was another channel! Lol
@@CharlieDexter99 It's really good, more product reviews and relaxed format
@@CharlieDexter99 Oh if you can't find it by the way, it's called "How Good Golf"
Rick is very stubborn and he won't listen to other people's tips or opinions because he thinks he knows it all!
Alex, I do hope you talked to Rick before doing this video?
Why? Constructive criticism helps you grow...

😢
@@UnknownUser_0000not the point. That's not being questioned
@@paulmcgee1867 So what's the point of this mindless outrage?
To be fair, Rick knows he is a "handsy" swinger....he's said as much in a few videos. I don't know if he'd be keen to rebuild his swing that he's been using for years. And - for his channel, it isn't so much about playing great golf - I mean how interesting would a break 75 video be if he was shooting below par?? 🤣🤣🤣 This is definitely the swing mechanics being taught today - and make a great deal of sense. However could be a struggle to adopt for someone who has been swinging in a different way their whole lives.
I hope Rick is alright about this 😂
Good stuff and hope he tries it in a video. 👍
Me too!
Let us see whether Rick reciprocates.......😂
He's probably using the wrong grip size or not enough tape wraps under his grip hence why his hands are over rotating
Alex, Peter and Rick in a 3 ball. Oh and maybe add in Danny but don't mike him up though :)
🙌🏼🙌🏼
Look at the hips at both golfers at the finish. I think that's why his face is closed so much more. The club is coming through with hands more than hips at that point. Definitely more of an inside out swing for rick with scotty having a more on plane swing.
Like the right arm under the left it seems to give me timing
Think Rick was ready to unleash some beef on his recent podcast but decided against it, I wonder if this was it?
Rick has said he's a bit handsy with his swing
Actually i don't think Scheffler is higher at the top of the backswing .... Rick is simply blocking the top by pushing his chin up instead of having his head dipped down for more freely down swing and less movement .... head/neck pushing back will restrict any forward moving in sync with the body... just try it yourself ... also Rick seems to have no clue that less movement with hands so that arms can get to work in sync is a swing while his action is a "HIT" ... somewhere ;) ..... Love the guy though .... most of us do .... ALL of us want him to do the work...
When attacking Rick you have to be prepared for his boyfriend Guy
Attacking??😂😂😂😂😂
@@AlexElliottGolf that’s how Guy will see it. Giving reacharounds and taking a wage for it
These tips can apply to any skill level of golfer. Whether they are 20 handicap, 10 handicap, +1 or +2 handicap or 24 handicap like Rick. 😂
He’s defo not 24 handicap i don’t thin k
Rick Shields is a very average golfer. When Rick asks "Can I?"....*break", "beat"?? etc. Don't waste time watching because the answer is always No he can't.
I think he’s a decent golfer tbf! He’s proven he can play
Why is it that nobody can criticize Rick Sheils?. He needs coaching just the same as everybody else.
🤣
when has Rick cheese ever been right?
