This video saved me from having to completely re-wire!! The info about the ground wire "making sure the contact point is clean" was my issue!! Returning the wiring harness back to Walmart :) Thanks for the excellent and informative video!!
Thanks man ! Wired my lights on my freshly painted boat trailer and tail lights had no power. Just couldn't figure it out. I watched your video and and when you explained proper grounding and the need to scrape all rust and paint away to ensure a good ground ! I realized my fresh paint was the possible problem. Lol I had a solid paint barrier blocking all current. 🤦♂️ problem fixed just like that. Waisted an hour but thanks to watching your video first. I didn't treat it all out and return it to the store. Haha I was that close ! Thanks again 👍
I just bought a pontoon and mine of the lights on my trailer work. I’m not electrician savvy or anything but I think I can do this. Thanks and you my friend have a new subscriber!!
Excellent video. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I learnt a lot from it especially how important grounding points are. I have a couple trailer lights that are intermittent so I will go and check the grounding points on all lights.
That's coming along pretty nicely. You make it look easy like the power pack you did a while back. I made one of those and mounted my humminbird to it. Thanks.
Thanks and those power boxes are awesome. Those videos are the reason I have as many subscribers as I do lol not many people watch the other videos they just like the how to ones. Weather looks good this week back to the sxs build now after the bearings
Good man on the bit about properly sanding and cleaning the bolt openings. Spent a bit of time in diagnosis over this when the solution was actually quite simple. Just needed to re-ground the white wire to bolts.
A suggestion for boat trailers. When getting you trailer ready to put in, or remove from the water, disconnect your wiring harness. That will keep your tail lights, or brake lights from being lit up underwater, and possibly causing a hot light bulb to shatter, in the cold water.
JD: Great video, good concise explanations. I ve got a 10ft sailing dinghy on a good trailer with a C frame construction, so I don t have the issue with feeding it through tubular frame. I liked where you placed the ground wire. I m guessing that I will need to replace that self tapping screw every season even if its a SS screw. The galvanized trailer will help create oxidation of that fastener if left all winter and spring. But your plan to use the strong feed wire on both sides of the frame straightened out my thinking. I was planning on just pulling the new wires from rear to middle like I rewired a 22 ft boat at one time, but your plan in solid and is less foolproof. Thanks! LSR
Such a great video! Although a step you can skip. Is why don't you just cut the old wiring harness and just attach new harness to it from the front. And pull it out the back. Then you don't need to find a wire/string/etc having to pull from back to front and then again front to back for the new one.
Most trailer problems would go away if when wiring you add a extra wire for ground going to each light. Water corrosion just ruins those frame grounds after a while.
My advice is go ahead a run a ground wire all the way, AND ground it somewhere to the frame also. Some folks say "Let the ground come thru the trailer ball of the vehicle". No and no. Go ahead, run the ground wire, go water tight LED Lights, and be done with it. The bare metal will rust, lights will flicker or get dim over time, do it right and be done with it.
Question: Couldn’t you use the old wire to pull the new wires through instead of using the fishing wire first? Is there a down side to using the old wire to pull the new wire?
I guess im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost the password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Karsyn Mayson i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I dont know anything about wiring and this video was awesome !! im having an issue with my trailer. i replaced the tail light bulbs but now i have running light but no brake or turn signals....any suggestions?
Check fuses or if they are the lights with the bulb on it bulb may be burned out for that function and check wiring if the fuses are good to make sure your wires are getting power depending where your splices are at
Nice job. I have these same lights in my Tow Dolly . Was thinking about running new wire , but my left light might need to be pulled and cleaned up a bit.
Need help. Recently got a free boat trailer. No electrical. Bought a trailer light kit from Tractor supply. buddy and i wired it up. i plug the 4 way connector into my 7 prong adapter for my truck and none of the trailer lights work. I plug in my 7x12 ATV trailer using same 7 prong adapter and all the trailer lights work for atv trailer. Switch back to boat trailer...no joy, no lights on trailer working? Harness & all trailer lights are brand new? Any thoughts?
Good job man! My lights that I just installed doesn't work, when you mentioned the side markers and taillights must be on a direct metal surface I thought oh man my nice new paint job needs to have some sanding down in spots lol. I think that is my next step to making them work! Great job again and God bless you brother!
Rigger's Tip: NEVER use a rope or string. The line must be rigid, lightweight and a small diameter. A shift cable makes an excellent "fishing line", the longer the better. I have different lengths, up to 18 feet, even longer. Cut the ends, elec. tape it off, grease a tad if you need it... proceed. Also, disassemble a cable, the different types of wires within it, or the guts of the cable, also offer a variety of good, sturdy fish lines. ***Take an old cable, cut the ends, skin the outer coating and you'll see what I mean. Good luck! 🙂👍
I like it...but I'm perplexed as to why you just didn't just use the old existing wires to pull through the new wire harness-presuming they are in reasonably good condition to make the trip through the frame?? As an added benefit, you would be hard pressed to get the color coded wire wrong. Lastly, with all those through bolts up front, why drill another hole in the trailer for the ground wire? Just strip back the insulation and put on a large ring connector. Otherwise, loved this video.
Well, you could film and hit the brakes at the same time, just put down the recording device, prop it up, use a mirror, a kid, the wife, etc. Good video, if people woild stop and think about what's about to happen they don't need to fish wires though, just use the existing ones, which you could have done too.
These wires were pretty brittle and also partially melted in spots. It was time to replace for sure. And your right I guess I could of set the phone down to film it but I'm slow sometimes lol
@@JDSOutdoors I don't know really. I know some cars have split wiring. The brakes and turns are on different wires, so they hook up different. I've seen them, and they look OK, but don't work correctly. Anyway, auto parts stores sell wiring harness for both kinds,
Weord, the 4 plug wire only has 4 wires, white, yellow, brown and green. Why does yours have 2 brown wires, 1 with the yellow, and the other with the green?
@@JDSOutdoors Glad it worked out for you...can't begin to tell you how many hacked 4 & 7- pin harnesses and trailer wiring I've replaced due to corrosion and severed wires, all due to scotchloks.... of course your mileage may vary, the opinions expressed here don't reflect that of the management, offer ends without notice... "bud" LOL ;)
Most local hardware stores have them such as ace hardware or Similar. If nothing like that around check any trailer repair or automotive shops. If you have time Amazon has everything as well
Wouldn't it have been easier when starting the harness down the tube at the front of the trailer to just open the swing away coupler and feed the wires down the main tube?
No because the plug end is fat and even harder to feed through the front if done that way. Ask me how I know lol. You have to either remove the coupler or tear the wiring back out and start over if the coupler is welded
@@JDSOutdoors I am talking about opening the swing away joint right behind where the wiring harness comes through the grommet. Thats got to be easier. My trailer doesn't have a swing away coupler nor grommets in the pass-through holes. I had to do mine like your video shows, but thought having the main tube open would have eliminated much of the "fishing" part.
This was one of the simplest video I’ve seen. To the point and on the money. Thank you..

Correct me if I’m wrong ..... If using led’s you can keep them hooked up and the extra lighting will help with loading and or unloading , right ?.
@@schism420420 i would think ur right with leds. No heat. No bulbs to break.

Put your emergency flashers on and that will let you know if turn signals and brakes light are functioning properly .
maybe the brakes only
you can use a stick or a small tree branch to put on your brake pedal then against your seat and check youre brake lights yourself.
Or wait till dark and look it your mirror
