I think most people will agree that Grampy is the best thing to come out of the post-code Boop shorts by a country mile. He creates such a sense of infectious joy as he dances around with his inventions, cackling like a madman the entire time - truly an example of chaotic good if I've ever seen one.
He's like a prototype version of Wallace from Wallace and Gromit.
My favorite is when they go to Grampys house
@@FleischerToons gonna have to be a bit more specific there Chief. You mean the one with Hold That Tiger? I love that one!
@@TVkingOmega you mean "Tiger Rag", but yes, that one is great.
@Doge Records the cartoon in question is Betty Boop and Grampy (his first cartoon)
when people say "lovingly restored," THIS is what they mean. this makes me feel LOVED by not only the original creators but the restoration team. thank you so very much.
I absolutely shouted when I saw this! Even when I had this on tape it never looked this good.
Professor Grampy deserves to be given a humanitarian award for making all of those children happy.
And there should have been more cartoons of him coming back to the orphanage after Christmas being a frequent visitor, much to all of the orphans' delight where he would regal them with many tall tales and even stories of his own adventures, which makes all of the children happy and excited.
Agreed. If only there were a lot more people like him in the world.
This cartoon is pretty sad yet joyful at the same time. It’s also another example of a depression-era cartoon focusing on little children being sad on Christmas until it comes out happy at the end (e.g. Those Beautiful Dames, The Shanty Where Santy Claus Lives). When the poor children cried at the orphanage due to their old and rusty toys being broken, Santa Claus did the right thing and brought the kids in new toys and brought the Christmas spirit to the house. Overall a pretty heartbreaking but yet cheerful cartoon. Overall I’m giving this a 9/10.
I would watch this cartoon every year for Christmas. It always made me cry seeing all the kids so sad. But then having a happy ending, was the best!!!!
this is stunning. it’s such a treat to watch this 86 year old classic cartoon with this level of clarity. thank you for this gift!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Right?! I usually watch this cartoon every Christmas morning. I watched it yesterday like always and the clarity and how amazing it looks is mind blowing. Definitely reminds me of my childhood watching Christmas Cartoon in the morning on TV.
The teddy bear bit breaks my heart every time…
This cartoon always comes into my mind as the holidays near, and though it hurts to rewatch at first, I remind myself that it really does work out in the end, and so I give it a watch.
Seeing this as a kid was life changing, and helped open my heart to those in great need at a young age. This cartoon is a beautiful example of how impactful pure hearted kindness can be, and with the setting of the great depression, that notion shines ever stronger. I hope this cartoon inspires us to be generous this year, and to find out how we can help those in need as the holidays approach.
I hope all who come by this comment section are well this season, and if not, I hope generosity like we see from Grampy comes to you. I have a tear in my eye and a full heart as I write this, wishing you all a wonderful holiday season.
TL;DR: Such a beautiful cartoon, and seeing it restored in this way feels just right given the subject of this toon. Let’s be good to each other, and spread joy to someone or even to an establishment like this orphanage who may need it~ 💙
Right there with you...makes me wonder why people choose to donate used or shoddy toys to the less fortunate
The teddy bear part is also the saddest part for me too. Couldn't Grampy try to repair him? It's great he made the children new toys but what about poor teddy?
This is a cartoon that needs to be seen by all generations. A man who simply wanted to see children happy, used his skills to work and creating a lifetime of memories. A beautiful remembrance of how precious innocence is.
Beautiful restoration. I hope Grampy is able to do the same to the orphanage when Christmas is over. Those identical children are going to get pretty hungry now that the cookware has been made into toys.
Maybe they should have thought this a little more through.
This is the saddest but also the cutest cartoon every
The parts with the toys all falling apart genuinely broke my heart seeing all the little ones cry
It seriously made me break down and cry
Then Grampy comes along and turns everything around and its the sweetest thing ever 🥹
Not only the picture is stunning, the quality of sound is astonishing.
I was thinking the exact same thing! Having owned VHS copies of this film from my childrenhood.... where the audio was so muddled and the transfer so dark..... the clarity here is phenomenal. They must utilize some sort of AI to reconstruct the optical audio as every transfer I've ever heard is clipping like mad due to trying to boost the signal to a level that's louder than the noise floor. I guess they can do all sorts of things in the digital world now.
@@That_AMC_Guy Here is a great video on the restoration process. In short; a team of passionate cinephiles using the best technology to restore the picture and sound to as close to original quality without too much modern overcorrection ruclips.net/video/rIOgaMnwRrQ/видео.html
@@That_AMC_Guy They actually do this process manually (well, they use computers and digital tools but it's still very human involved). There's a video on RUclips where they explain how they restore these old films.
This was a childhood memory for me. The restoration is simply breathtaking! I think I speak for everyone here.
One of my all time favorite animated shorts. The stereoscopic sequences look fantastic in this restoration. Seeing the way the shadows move on the front of the orphanage is incredible. The soundtrack sounded clearer than ever. The team did a wonderful job restoring this one.
For the first time I get to see the Christmas tree sequence how it was meant to be seen! This cartoon made me sad as a child when the toys broke. Still does. Yet I still seek it out each Christmas. Thank you so much! You have no idea how much this means to me!
Happy holidays! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@FleischerToons 1:40 - Marvel Studios' Black Widow (2021) brought me here.
I never even knew that the tree was green! 😍
This is a beautiful restoration! My grandma had this cartoon on VHS when I was little, and it was a faded, yellowish print. I'm so happy to see my all-time favorite Christmas cartoon getting the restoration it so deserved! Thank you!
This is pretty much how I got my first copy of it my DVD of it is it is a extra on toxic crusaders my first copy I watched on Christmas almost every year that the vhs got ate
I remember I saw it on VHS. There were three Christmas cartoons. This was the second.
@@harrystoller4147What were the other two?
@@SpongeDan the first was “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”. Although I forgot the name of the third, all I remember is it was colorless animation/live-action.
Beautiful! A perfect one to restore. In hard times Grampy is the best character to bring cheer and imagination. Thank you guys for this!
Grampy is such a blessing!
Happy Holidays Fleischer friends!
Thank you Hector!
@@FleischerToons Can you do the HD restoration for Max Fleschier's Color Classics short, Peeping Penguins (1937), please?
Fantastic restoration! It looks like an entirely brand new cartoon! Thank you for breathing life back into this classic. I can’t wait to show this to my dad, he grew up with the Fleischer cartoons and shared them with me. ❤
It's a good short for the holiday season and has been wonderfully restored. Not often the over-looked shorts get a well-maintained restoration.
It is I believe similar qualities is on the box set for toxic Avenger and crusaders that made me cry when I noticed that because every Christmas I would watch this with my grandparents
I remember watching this on DVD when I was kid, and when I saw those poor orphans so sad it even made me cry but when I saw that kind man cheer them up it filled me with tears of joy
Wow, excellent restoration. One funny thing I find about this cartoon is that won't the Orphanage owners wonder where all their stuff went?
Oops! 😬
“Christmas comes but once a year, but no more kitchen stuff, I fear!”
“To the nearest box store steer, fa la la la la!”
*Grampy roller-skating up and down the aisles of Walmart’s kitchen/home section with a shopping cart*
@@FleischerToons Grampy can explain what happened to the Stuff.
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
If the owners were to show up.
They clearly weren’t using it anyway. They left the children alone on Christmas with no food, no Christmas tree, and crappy gifts.
My Grandparents were kids during this period of time.
Making something out of nothing was something that had to do because they didn’t have a choice.
Never forget what that generation instilled into our society.
Appreciate what you have, because it could all go away in a blink of an eye.
Just think… Not too long ago, people would say you were crazy if you told them phones would have videos on them, and then look down at their newspaper.
Merry Christmas! 🎄
What a fantastic restoration. Thank you for giving new life to one of my top favorite Christmas cartoons.
Our pleasure!
Amazing Restoration! I hope Cobweb Hotel will be as great as this!
I grew up watching this as part of the Pee-Wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special on VHS! I have never seen the fully cartoon, let alone in color, until today! Thank you for this wonderful childhood memory 🥹
Oh my God. This is core-memory level flashback right here. Im getting all teary-eyed at work cause the nostalgia is hitting me so hard!!!
Thank you for giving me back a chunk of my childhood lost to old corrupted VHS tapes!!
It breaks my heart to see these kids crying, knowing that they were given defective toys and their day was initially ruined. I'm glad that Professor Grampy saved the day, but Christmas should always start off happily. If you haven't done so already, make a donation to Toys for Tots or any other charity that gives to kids on Christmas. I would give hugs for the sad children. 💔 😔
I saw this on Toon In With Me, this morning. I loved the restoration. I remember watching it on the Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special.
The restoration looks fantastic. I am so glad I see this cartoon as such a good quality !
I’m so thankful that there are people who painstakingly clean up and recolor the fragile negative films and audio tapes these were recorded on so that they aren’t lost forever to decay
Now we can not only enjoy this every Christmas, but it will look superb and close to what the animators _wanted_ the film to look and sound like when shown to an audience. (And not a echoey, garbled mess)
One of those neat little details you only notice in the restored version: the vacuum cleaner chair car and the toy train set being plugged into the overhead screw in outlets!
When I was little my grandmother still had appliances that screwed in like a light bulb.
The toys Grampy makes are all so inventive, too.
Can you imagine how much fun they had coming up with all those crazy ideas?
One of my favorite things about the Cartoons Grampy shows up in is his ability to help people and use his inventions to turn any negative situation into a positive.
I think Grampy's Optimistic Point of view is something we could all do to try on for size.
Thank you for restoring this wonderful Cartoon and all the other Cartoon's you're making an effort to restore and preserve.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Here’s to more Grampy restorations! 🍻
This should be shared and enjoyed by everyone! It's such a treat to be able to watch cartoons that are now close to a century in this quality! Such an amazing effort and beautiful work. This is truly a labor of love to be shared with all generations!
This preservation initiative means so much to us. We had so many of these Fleischer shorts on VHS growing up. I can't believe I can't watch these is such great quality now! Fleischer Studios is so pivotal to animation history. Thank you for preserving it and protecting it. ❤
Max Fleischer is a cartoon genius and should be remembered more than he is.
Absolutely love this cartoon. It doesn't shy away from the fact that poorer groups still have it rough during the holidays. But also beautifully illustrating how a single compassionate individual who actually cares can help to add a bit of happiness. Grampy honestly deserves an award for going so far to make these kids happy on Christmas, because he did it for no monetary gain and for the sole purpose of spreading joy. Respect!
I’ve watch this cartoon every Christmas for 25+ years, and always dreamed of a restoration. This looks INCREDIBLE! Thank you!
Bill, always enjoyed your comments on the various blogs over the years, so appreciate the kind words. I'm only sorry Michael Sporn didn't get to see it.
This was delightful! Thank you folks so very much for restoring and presenting Grampy's glee to us nearly a century later!
I remember the shortened version of this from the Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special, and never really saw the full version until years later.
Seeing the full version of "Christmas Comes But Once A Year" is one thing, but seeing it fully restored is a whole other deal.
Oh, and also, that stamp that shows up at 8:05 is the 1936 Christmas Seal stamp.
This is a feel good cartoon dressed up for Christmas. Grampa Claus knows exactly what to do to make those kids Christmas bright. He also gives them hope for the future too
Breathtaking restoration. I've watched it several times over the 2022 Holiday Season and it is just pure magic.
I just found the cartoon last week and really liked it. My late gramma was poor and born in 1917, and much of her family died of TB and the flu. They had no running water, or heat other than a coal stove. So this looked to me like what was a normal situation for most folks, except my gramma never had a tree or stocking. (I made her a stocking of her own with her name on it when she was about 80.)
This cleaned up and clear version is so nice. The other was harder to see what was going on, like the pop gun for example. Gee I bet this was neat to see new in the theater!
That was so nice of Grampy to make toys for those little Children.
THANKS! i remember this one when i was younger being shown on TV. never could find a good print. love it you are taking the time to restore these and sharing for other people to enjoy
My brother and I grew up watching this every Christmas ❤️ Thank you so much for restoring and sharing!
It's so nice to finally see a copy of this film with a final scene that's actually VISIBLE!
It looks so good! Absolutely gorgeous! This amazing work of art can finally be viewed as intended! And Professor Grampy is a hero!
I was born in 1992. Each childhood Christmas I would watch this video and other Christmas cartoons. I think this one especially had a great impact on me. The joy of those kids receiving one present each - and their devestation when that one present falls apart. I watch this video every now and then and it still makes me emotional, just like when I was a kid.
This is amazing! Though now they have no plates to eat and no umbrellas, no coffee pots, chairs and pans... 😂 Was this man a blessing or a curse?? Amazing quality! You guys do an incredible job remastering those cartoons!
Don’t worry.
Professor Grampy can invent a solution to any problem.
Omg it’s restored 💕🎄🎄🎄this is such a gift to the world
This looks amazing...thanks so much for sharing it in far better condition than I've seen on countless "public domain" VHS/DVD releases over the past 35+ years!
This short was on earlier this morning on MeTV #ToonInWithMe
Thats the whole point.
Did you like it?
@@FleischerToons definitely
I think the thing that impresses me the most in a lot of these restorations is the crispness of the audio. Almost every other copy of the cartoon online sounds really crackly and distorted. Meanwhile, this sounds almost brand new.
Did the audio process simply fare better than competing studios at the time? It's aged surprisingly well.
This is the clarity that you can achieve when you have the original track negative and expert technicians. Credit goes to Deluxe Laboratories, who did the scan.
Love these old Max Fleischer cartoons - gets me in the spirit. Merry Christmas!
Its like watching the short for the first time. All these years with color faded prints, I never saw much of the intricate details like fine stitching unraveling in the toys, the candle on the opening title card, the hot plate popping the corn and the umbrella tree's many decorations as it spins in a beautifully done rotoscoping. It brings tears to my eyes. Well done!
this is so beautiful!!!! Happy Holidays!!! I love the innocence of this piece...
Wow! I've never seen this cartoon so clear and with such clear audio. There are details I was never able to make out before. This is amazing!
WOW! I’ve never seen a print of this cartoon that looks this good! Thank you!
I used to watch a tape of this every year when I was little for Christmas ❤️
I love Max Fleicher Cartoons and how the used 3D Elements in them. I love that effect.
Max Fleischer's cartoons were sincere and a lot of fun.
Beautiful work everybody! I was trying to catch the music cue around 3.55 (as he is `climbing` to the window
It's a song called "Over at Grampy's House." It was sung in Grampy's first cartoon BETTY BOOP AND GRAMPY. Afterwards, it was used as Grampy's theme music whenever he would get an idea and put it into action.
wow i only ever watched an older looking version of this but its still nothing short of amazing! i love grampy!
Absolutely beautiful restoration, for this beautiful short. This cartoon holds a special place in my heart for its creativity and message. Thank you
Absolutely incredible restoration work. This brings back a lot of memories. God bless.
IDK why I always cry when I see this video but I do love this so and seeing it for the first time in color was amazing.
Beautiful restoration job, it's always amazing to see an old cartoon in such a clean and crisp quality!
Wow, so great to find this so clear and cleaned up. I love all his films cartoons, my girls really love watching these so it's nice to see a version that's very clear, we love the studios cartoons
You have to admire how well Fleischer Studios intergrated hand-drawn and stop-motion with their animation, between this and Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor
The quality is so beautiful!! I am crying, this is an excellent Christmas present!!
I think I saw this restoration on MeTv not too long ago. Excellent work!
Oh my freaking god, i've never seen such a high quality fleischer cartoon in color. I hope you restore the rest of the cartoons
That is some restoration. I can finally see the picture of the orphanage's Trustee so much clearer now, and yet he still looks creepy.
Its as clean as Cuphead!!! Beautiful restoration!!!
I think it is nice for the guy who made toys for the children
Beautiful restoration! I have memories of watching this on a VHS tape of Christmas themed public domain cartoons over my Grandma's when I was a little one. Seeing this again at such a high resolution and audio quality is like watching it for the first time! Thanks for the happy memories.
Absolutely gorgeous, I love this cartoon, but it always makes me cry
One of my favorite childhood cartoons! That guy makes a good Santa and inventor.
I remembered watching this cartoon in monochrome back when I was a kid.
I never thought to see this in colour, let alone see this again,
Thanks for the little childhood trip and preservation/enhancement of this film.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
Glad to share 🌈
God I remember watching this on vhs...always made me cry because of how sweet it was
This restoration of the video and audio is state of the art! Thanks for the restoration. ☺️
WOW!!!!!
That looks spectacular!
I used to have this on a VHS when I was a kid in the 80s.
Thank you so much this is a wonderful treat °~•.☆.•~°
Good. I can’t explain how happy I was when this negative restoration came out, when it specifically has the original titles! Thanks to Paramount! 😊
Amazing holiday cartoon to people who loves watching Max Fleischer cartoons
That’s what I called absolute restoration
hella great lookin' and soundin'. didn't know that somewhere in dreamland was from a print rather than the negs, though i feel i should've noticed it sooner. still looked good considerin' it was from a print
Thank you so much! Watching this short on RUclips each year is one of my favorite Christmas traditions. This looks so amazing I'm so happy you participated in that video on Tested the other day so I could learn about your work!
Thank you so much for restoring this cartoon, which was one of my favorites growing up and an essential part of my childhood Christmas memories. I never knew how vibrant that it actually looks, and the rich details of the gorgeous backgrounds that were lost in the dirty, degraded copies I watched on VHS. Now that I think about it, I think that Grampy is probably a huge creative influence in how I view objects and art, creating something completely new by combining differing objects. I can't tell you how much I love this!
I love this, thank you for this restoration
WOW!!! The restoration is AMAZING!!!! First time I saw this was on a VHS back in the 90s. Thanks for posting! Merry Christmas!!!!
Stunning. My jaw was on the floor.
Bravo!!! Bravo on a beautiful restoration! I grew up with this short in dingy to ok quality and my jaw dropped to the floor when I experienced the brilliance here of the picture and sound! Max, Dave and the rest of the team would be proud!
That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Excellent quality restoration. Truly beautiful.
Ridiculous in what sense?
@@possiblepilotdeviation5791they probably meant it's ridiculously good lol
It’s so surreal seeing this cartoon so crisp and clean after watching it so many times from nothing but old vhs tapes. Looks fantastic!!
I’ve been looking for this since I was little! Thank you! Santa’s so creative
I seen this cartoon countless of times and seeing this restoration is like seeing it for the very first time. Thank you for all the work you put to restore this classic!
Grampy sure knows how to put a smile on everyone's faces.
Special thanks to those who restored this for the new generation who will see it! I didn’t think that I would search it to rewatch the original that I watched a few days ago to now have a new one downloaded with restoration here on RUclips.
