@@deadpanduke19True that. You should make a longer form doc of this. There’s not enough stuff out there about 90’s Indie rock that truly covers it all.
Thanks for the good video! I didn't know Pixies was considered the first or one of the first indie bands. Now I know where the nasal singing voice comes from...though I still wonder why so many indie singers sing in nasal...maybe you can make a video of it :D
@@deadpanduke19 ooh, you totally should! I know you said these types of videos take longer to make, but if you enjoy making them it'd be a really cool series :)
Found the Pixies because Placebo covered Where is my Mind, favorite band since I was 11 😂 Pavement always makes me think of Radiohead with a dash of Connor Oberest.
“Silver jews” definitely contend for mastering the art art of not saying anything and thats my favourite genre. No wonder they have a link to pavement. The smiths too but ambiguity comes to their rescue.
Cool video. My only complaint is leaving out Guided By Voices when talking about lo-fi is kind of like talking about shoegaze and not mentioning My Bloody Valentine
As much as I love the Pixies, they didn't create indie rock. There were plenty of indie bands over the pond here in UK. Don't get me wrong, massive respect to The Pixies. I didn't get into them late until 1991.
I was indie in the early 90's . We were the pretentious teenagers that went to art schools and not regular high schools. We mostly listened to stuff like Pixies, polvo, sebadoh pavement; you can toss the occasional stereolab or underground hip hop in there. Trendy was a dirty word, we hated the super Trendy Kids. That would be the MTV crowd- the kids that shopped at Spencer's instead of the thrift stores. We would never listen to the Flaming lips. :p Our clicks were small and very tight and we were able to spot seen gobblers immediately. If you were in you were in. Indie was way more than the music it was a culture. We were the real cool kids of the 90s. We are what the Soundgarden Pearl Jam Nirvana douchebags wanted to be. We were the real skaters the real drug abusers. The Artsy pretentious pricks were we.

Love watching content that includes song snippets. I've been a fan of Elliott since I first heard "2:45 AM".
Where does Dinosaur Jr fit in this discussion? When I think of the roots of Indie Rock I automatically think of You’re Living All Over Me
Yeah, plus that’s what gave us Lou Barlow’s sentridoh, sebadoh, the folk implosion etc…
Your contents hella underrated, I have high hopes for the future of this channel. Keep it up!

All amazing artists!! Just didn’t have time for all of them lol

I decent list, I think the one band that should have been included is Archers of Loaf. They and Pavement are the defined the 90s indie sound.

Thanks for this video! Definitely checking out some things i hadnt heard of yet
Thank you man , I’ve never heard of slow dive , first song on souvlaki gave me instant goosebumps 🎉
Such an amazing record bro
I already listen to a lot of indie, but hadn't heard of The Get Up Kids, great band, and great video too!
Very insightful video, and I really enjoyed the format! Kinda like a mini documentary of sorts.
Thank you! I’m thinking about making a guide to modern pop next

Glad that Elliott Smith was mentioned, fantastic video!
The fact you have Sparklehorse shows you know what’s up
Nirvana introduced me to all these bands

I LOVE THE FLAMING LIPS!!! I'm not going to keep commenting, I swear lol You uploaded at the perfect time, I'm working on etsy orders.
That’s such an accurate description of Pavement lol. I definitely hear Connor in SM’s voice and their riffs are like happy Radiohead

Silver Jews are awesome!
5:25 the Dream Pop is more, like parent genre towards the Shoegaze.
Cool video. My only complaint is leaving out Guided By Voices when talking about lo-fi is kind of like talking about shoegaze and not mentioning My Bloody Valentine
valentine = great song
The Verve!?
grandaddy
No modest mouse or guided by voices mentioned 😞😞😞

Haha I love this! Thanks for sharing
I think you should listen to home start with his Odyssey or before the night album. I think you might like it, if not I understand.
I’ve listened to Home before and I do like them a lot!
could somebody give me a general idea of modern indie rock artists to look into i have been really digging the genre
Definitely check out Alvvays! Their newest album is great and listen to some of Beach House if you haven't heard em
Dinosaur Jr are the best
3:30 the Beatles would’ve all OD’d if they did anymore LSD than they already did
Shoegaze does not need to be on this list…in my opinion. Cool video dude.
shoegaze is alt rock
