'The Thin Man' should make any all time list. It spawned 5 sequels as well as had the most charming and charismatic detective in any of the detective movie genre.
I know you already have two Fincher movies, but Zodiac really needs to be on here. I would say it beats out most of the movies on this list, but maybe that's just me.
Thanks for your comment reminding me of a great film Dr Watson. Been a few since I watched Seven. Just loaded the dvd. And I will be well occupied for the next couple hours.
Two of the best movies ever made!!! Nice job. I just watched Day of the Jackal a week ago. Three Days of the Condor is definitely in my top 5 movies of all time. Add the Odessa File to that and you have the best three movies from the seventies!
@@gregwilson7818 I did not like "The Odessa File". So you just watched "The Day of the Jackal" a week ago? I havent watched it in a long time. I'll have to see if I have it in my DVDs or not.
@@aspenrebel - LOL, I also passed on Rocky and Star Wars. Yes, Animal House was great, same as Star Wars and Rocky, but Day of the Jackal, Three Days of the Condor, the French Connection, and The Odessa File are my favorites. I read some of your other posts and I was surprised that your tastes are so similar to mine...LOL. I have the Thin Man Box Set, all of the Charlie Chan movies (with Warner Oland and Sidney Toler only), all of the Sherlock Holmes movies (Basil and Nigel), the entire Columbo set, the entire Pink Panther box set, etc. I just bought the entire Kojak series as well as The Streets of San Francisco. I'm a huge fan of Hawaii Five-O. My favorite movie of all time is True Believer with James Woods, and although he is a lawyer in it, it could be classified as a detective movie. IMO, there are very few movies made after 1990 that can compare to movies made from the 30's to the 80's.
I would highly recommend "The Thin Man" which is my personal favorite detective movie and was so good is spawned 5 sequels, all of which are also great. The protagonist is maybe the most charming and charismatic character of any detective movie.
The problem is, how much actual detecting (private or police) occurs in the movie vs action, spying, crime, violence, love interest etc. Or just being a cop movie with no particular detecting going on.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (dubbed) was one of the best movies I’ve seen. But detective? I watched Daniel Craig’s version too. But it lacked the raw intensity.
Heat, while a great action film, isn’t really a detective movie. I don’t think Fargo really qualifies either. I think Hitchcock’s Rear Window is better than Vertigo but I really like both. You left out the classics like Maltese Falcon, Murder on the Orient Express, The Thin Man etc. Then there’s French Connection. Just my thoughts.
I don’t think “Vertigo” is half as good as “Rear Window” or “To Catch a Thief”! “Dial M for Murder” is better too. Something about “Vertigo” is really too depressing to enjoy. I think the leading lady was just too brooding and depressing to make it watchable. Grace Kelly knew how to make things entertaining. True that “Seven” is an excellent movie but it’s too gross and dark to watch more than once. You’ll need months of therapy afterwards as well. Give me a mystery that doesn’t make me want to drink arsenic the whole way through it any day. There’s so many to choose from. “Heat” is a great choice. It contains some of the most excellent acting ever made. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is much better in its Swedish version, a lot of people who’ve watched both will tell you so as well. “LA Confidential” another wonderful choice and Kim Basinger did earn her Oscar because she was in effect portraying several women at once. Plus she’s just so mesmerizing to watch that she makes you want to see what she is going to do next. “The Maltese Falcon” has to be on anyone’s list who knows what they are talking about. “Death on the Nile” is one of my favorites. I think the 1970’s version is good but the new one does have beautiful cinematography. Some people will say “Orient Express” is better. It’s a toss up if you ask me. If you haven’t seen either of the “Knives Out” movies then you should. The second one is probably my favorite but both are awesome. “Sherlock Holmes, Game of Shadows” is one of the best of all time with an incredible performance by Robert Downey, Jr. and the rest of the cast were also great. The entire first season of BBC’s “Sherlock Holmes” with Benedict Cumberbatch is awesome! I’ve seen too many movies that could make the top ten list. The best ones leave you feeling satisfied. Kind of like the other bests of everything do!!! 😂
Sorry, I've loved most of your "Top 10" videos but although this one includes a few worthy entries, it falls short. "Of all time" is in the title and you mention film noir several times, but you then proceed to ignore the many great movies of the film noir era. Any list of the all-time best detective movies that fails to include classics like The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon, to name just two, is sadly lacking.
Bogarts Maltese Falcon is missing. So is the Agatha Christie masterpiece Murder in Orient Express starring Finny & Widmark. & Dial M for Murder starring Grace Kelly .Heat cant be called a detective movie. Seven is a good movie but not worthy of No1 slot . With all due respect my personal choice would be 1) Murder in Orient Express 2) Dial M for Murder 3) Chinatown 4) Vertigo 5) Maltese Falcon 6) Silence of the Lamb 7) Wait until dark 8) Day of the Jackal 9) The Girl with the dragon tatoo 10) Rear Window
The narrator mentions "noir film" I so many times and yet completely ignores the real great noir films of the 40's and 50's. How can anyone take this list seriously?
The Heat (which is a great movie, one of my favourites of all time) is not really a detective movie. Big sleep, Harper or sth of that kind should have made it instead I think.
WELL!!!! ....... Hummm??? I had never thought of Best Detective movies before. Since one mainly watches for the action, actors and actresses, or the crimes rather than the detecting. Some in your list I have never heard of but most I have seen. A few I dont recall too well. I disagree with "Heat". I did not think that was a very good movie at all. Acting by both was terrible. One film you may consider is "Zodiac" (I think is the title)..... (2007).
Once again, you collect a list of "best of all time" in which you only consider newer movies. How on earth can you make this list without including movies from the '30s to the '50s.
I find this to be arrogance beyond arrogance. There are probably at LEAST 98,000 better entries, ALL OF THEM NOT AM ERCIAN....its a it like ww2 ..Russians thing they won it, Americans think THEY won it. all along the British had 1 MILLION men in Burma alone!
You totally mixed up the genres here in this list. Your top of the list are all thrillers, not detective movies. Same goes for other ones - the Heat is criminal drama, Prisoners is psychological thriller ... So dislike for the misleading content
"The French Connection"; "M" (1931); "In the Heat of the Night"
'The Thin Man' should make any all time list. It spawned 5 sequels as well as had the most charming and charismatic detective in any of the detective movie genre.
How about Bogart in The Maltese Falcon?
Yeah
Cant believe Bogart's "The Big Sleep" didn't make the grade
Grreat List and fine additional suggestions, especially with Bogart. But, I loved the black comedy of NICE GUYS, too.
I know you already have two Fincher movies, but Zodiac really needs to be on here. I would say it beats out most of the movies on this list, but maybe that's just me.
Before I watched this video, I was worried seven wasn't gonna be on this list, & it's number 1! It's my favorite detective movie!
I just couldn't leave it out :)
Thanks for your comment reminding me of a great film Dr Watson. Been a few since I watched Seven. Just loaded the dvd. And I will be well occupied for the next couple hours.
Technically a series and not a movie, The Mentalist. I can't Imagine seeing a top list without at least an honorable mention.
"The Day of the Jackal" (1973) starring Edward Fox. "Three Days of the Condor" (1975) starring Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway.
Two of the best movies ever made!!! Nice job. I just watched Day of the Jackal a week ago. Three Days of the Condor is definitely in my top 5 movies of all time. Add the Odessa File to that and you have the best three movies from the seventies!

True, Still funny as hell : )
No "Usual Suspects?"
They need to do a more top 10 list movies how more classic movies for 40's and 50's
The original Swedish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" was far superior to the Hollywood version.
Great job, keep up.
Any Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellars) , Charlie Chan, Sherlock Holmes movie.
Any list of the greatest detective movies has to include Dirty Harry, changed the genre forever
How could you have forgotten Agatha Christie's movies. Witness for the Prosecution, Orient Express , Death in the Nile

The Malese Falcon 1941

How about Humphrey Bogart in "The Big Sleep"?
Yeah
Or 1978's with Robert Mitchum.
It is most hard to choose ten in detective movies. But it is pity I do not see the names of Hackman, McQueen and Eastwood.
Agree
Love Fargo...”Ya”
Nice try but Manhunter (with Brian Cox as Lector) was far more intense as to how the detective got into the mind of a serial killer. NEVER BETTERED.
