    The gasket is airtight. You have to squeeze the middle to let air escape and it will create a vacuum like seal. I was confused at first as well. But give it a good squeeze and you will be impressed on how well it seals and let's nothing leak

  • @Soupcan13
    @Soupcan13 5 лет назад +8

    Man that's a bummer about the seal! The whole time I was watching the review I was wondering how solid the lock up was. It needs some kind of pressure release seal so it can close properly. Thanks for covering that. I agree about the choice to have the switch spork on both.

    There is a new UCO 5 piece mess kit, and it addresses all the problems you talked about in this video!

    Thanks for the review, I was actually looking at the all rubber mess kit, but yeah like someone mentioned, it's kinds like a Tupperware bowl, press in the middle it should seal.

    I carry the polymer kit when i travel for work. Great for hotel room camping.

    Due to its weight and it being solid, I decided to go with reusable silicone bags that they have at Walmart. $3 for 3👍🏽

    i have the same problem with the bamboo version. they either need to make the gasket thicker or put locking tabs/clasps (like on a old school suitcase) on all four corners to help even the seal so it locks down tight to make it truly "leakproof."

  • @larryterry7874
    @larryterry7874 4 года назад +2

    I have the Palomar version love it
    If I could change one detail it would be the hole slightly bigger. So I can put a caribiner in the hole so I can just atach it to the outside of my pack. If they wanted to make something amazing for this setup a flat spice container would be cool so it can be in the unit. That would be cool

      Larry Terry I just took a drill to the hole worked great for a year now.

    It should be noted the polymer spork actually has a cutting edge on the fork side, tho I’m not sure how effective it is

    I've always been leery of buying gear that says leak proof, especially online, I like to buy it locally and test it and then return it almost always, I have some old Tupperware (better than the new ones) and I bought the UCO switch (thks 2 u) and I use it when I go to the VA (for like the whole #$@& day) 😤 I appreciate how you really check Every detail for your reviews!

    I would suggest that you follow up on Liber Modularis's ten month old suggestion of testing the plastic Swedish mess kit which was marketed in the UK as the Wildo. I thought it had the most features for the money of 30 mess kits which I purchased for the money 15 years ago like a cutting board, cup,utensils, and a dual salt and pepper shaker. Although it's not as environmentally friendly, at least it's made out of non-BPA plastic. The one drawback is that you can't cook with it. However, if the cutting board is slightly trimmed, it's innards would fit inside the standard British army mess tin or potentially the Trangia. I would also probably add the fork spoon combination of the more expensive UCO which you reviewed. Thanks, Michael

    Agreed I think adding another dollar or two to the cheaper kit for adding switch would well worth the price.

    I bought 4 of the sporks and I think they work great for my lunch daily at work and on the trail. I am not big on the dehydrated meals though and if I use one then I take my titanium long handled spoon. I find that the $2 spork is better for daily use too because now I’m not as concerned about losing it as my $10 titanium spork.

    This is essentially one shallow bowl and one deep bowl along with two different types of sporks and is called a mess kit.
    Do it properly and get yourself a Wildo mess kit. You get a spork, cutting board with a strainer, a foldable cup, a foldable bowl along with the box which can act as a deep bowl and a shallow bowl. A far superior product.

    Who would buy a mess kit you can't put on a stove?

      what he said

    • @BenKickert
      @BenKickert 5 лет назад

      @TUZU Oh I get that part... but why bother reviewing it. Not sure I understand the relevance of showing oatmeal being heated up in a microwave for an outdoor channel. I have no issue with car camping, and do it frequently with my family, but considerations are so different. If you can't afford a GSI bugaboo set, then at least go with any of the rebranded chinese knock offs available on amazon for $25.

    • @clm652
      @clm652 5 лет назад +1

      @@BenKickert There are 7 billion people on the planet, do you think they all have the exact same needs as you? Camp the same way as you? Have the same number of children/grand children as you? Eat the same food as you? Prepare the same way as you? Camp in the same location as you? Etc etc. You can't be serious. 7 billion times i dunno, 5000 different variables, that's your number and you can't fathom where something like this would fit in? That's just a lack of imagination and intelligence.

    • @BenKickert
      @BenKickert 5 лет назад +2

      @@clm652 Good reviews require a critical assessment of products, otherwise you are just a shill. Sure we all have different needs and come from different places. But, some features (or lack there of) deserve to be called out, especially when you consider price. I get that there are times times when throwing a mess kit on a stove isn't a need, but why in the world would you do a bamboo premium version that is less versatile and heavy. My original question stands... why would you buy this. I can't think of a situation where this product excels. But, I just call them like I see them... if you don't like my observations... well, they are worth what you paid for them. No refunds.

  • @briansamonas3805
    @briansamonas3805 5 лет назад

    Just buy a spork or switch and forget the useless bowls. Who eats out of something that looks like that anyway? It’s not a bowl or a plate. I say buy a good utensil and just carry a cheap plastic bowl. Most backpacking meals are bowl-esk anyway. In all the years I’ve been backpacking I don’t think I have ever needed a plate, a bowl works great.

    A mess kit that can't be used to cook over fire is worthless

    • @Durplepurple94572
      @Durplepurple94572 5 лет назад

      Exactly. It just complicates things for the most part. Unless you're taking it to work to eat your lunch. But if your going to use it for that just get a zojirushi Mr bento and a M tac utensil set or east German utensil set.
