Someone with a military background may understand that, but others may not. He said there a lot of Amazon reviews from people who were confused by the naming, so it's a fair criticism.
The name and the shape make perfect sense to me since it is designed so that you can nest a army canteen inside it (the kidney shape ones). And that's exactly how i use mine (the lid goes on the bottom and its a perfect fit).
@@kurtrussell5228 Depends on the carrier. if your original cup is narrower on the bottom, and you have the snug fit type of a carrier, then it's a struggle and the lid will not fit on the bottom. i use MFH Mole Utility pouch and it fits the canteen set with a MFH canine nested with no problem (even has space to put a small wood oven in it).
Canteen mess kit is exactly what it is. The mess kit that fits a canteen. Also there are two definitions of Canteen, one of which is a military camp restaurant.

I will 2nd what everyone is saying about the name. I don't find anything confusing about it. The name is accurate in my opinion. You can put the kit in a military canteen cover/pouch and place a military canteen inside to carry or transport. As to the shape, it's shaped like that so it contours to the body when worn typically in the kidney area on a duty belt.
good to hear it will fit into a usgi canteen holder with a usgi 1 qt canteen in it. as a cup and put is great. vet holes are so easy to do. two or three on each end. and maybe a very thin cloth between each item to stop any rattles?
Canteen (n): a restaurant provided by an organization such as a military camp, college, factory, or company for its soldiers, students, staff, etc. In that sense, this is exactly what this mess kit represents: a mess kit you could use for food service and consumption from the unit/company/school canteen. As others have mentioned, it also fits the shape of some (perhaps older) canteens (as in Canteen (n) 2: a small water bottle, as used by soldiers or campers) that are (or were) issued to soldiers in the US Army and other organizations. It looks as though if you put the lid at the bottom, you could fit this kit inside the old LBE hip canteen cover, and fit the 1L canteen inside it. Name seems perfectly reasonable to me.
It would've been nice to see how the hanging part works. I feel like it would be hard to keep level, especially with the shorter pot. But maybe thats why it's shaped that way.
I appreciate that you actually use a product before you give a review. It's impossible for 1 person to do this for every product. I feel like I should be paying you for doing this. The time savings and money savings alone is worth its weight in salt. Thank you and stay special interest free!!!!!
I have the set with a Nalgene canteen for the last 2 years. Yes GI style canteen fits in it. It is a great set for camping and is rather sturdy. I almost lost a handle when washing in a large bin at a gathering with lots of people. The two cups make it a great set although I wish it came with two lids. I recommend it with a GI style canteen.
Glad that you had the balls, and intelligence, to make that clear. Luke has pissed me off on several occasions with his blatant ignorance. Thank you for your recommendation !!!
I also ha have kit with a Nalgene canteen and I love it .but I had to shop around and find an extra component that fit the base making it all together four peace set not including the lid. The component is a wood or hidroxan stove bottom and it all works together nicely . S and H ...CHEERS....
The canteen cup cookset is the way to go. The two cups, the lid, the cable, and... wait for it... a 1100ml canteen. Fits well in the Helikon-tex Essentials pouch.
I guess a lot of people like titanium but honestly I prefer my BCB crusader kit. For the same price as your, you get a canteen cup, a canteen, a plastic cup, a stove and a camo carry bag and it all nestles together. Whereas this one states it cant all nestle together when you buy the bigger kit eg. The canteen flask and the two cups with no stove!
Nothing wrong with a stainless steel set so long as you don’t mind the bit of extra weight. I also have a Solo Stove with pot that is stainless. I did swap out the lid for a titanium one to save a bit of weight, but it is great otherwise.
I have a Boundless Voyage titanium 750ml round pot with lid for boiling water for dehydrated meals/coffee. Nested inside I have a SnowPeak brand green anodized 450ml titanium cup. Nested inside that I have an MSR pocket rocket 2. Works brilliant for all my needs.
I’ve got the “valtcan” (Amazon cheapo)version of this and it is great. The “pan” part has a fold under handle rather than butterfly handle. Love it. Never used the hanging wire though.
About the name, I understand where everyone is coming from. However, at 68 I grew up with a canteen mess kit just about like this and have looked for years to one similar to it. I had a WWII canteen and under it was a mess kit just like that. It had a fold out handle and it all fit in the canteen pouch I wore on my military belt. So yes it is a canteen mess kit by all means. The canteen was and is a separate item. Two items, canteen, canteen mess kit. Also a wood stove kit is available as well. Add the three together and stack them high as you can.
Wow, I actually have that kit for years now. Kinda at least. I bought the canteen set and it actually came with a titanium canteen in addition to what you have. I really like that kit and I also use the canteen when I go to the gym for example. Although I'm always hesitant to bring fuel like esbit with me. Since you stack the big pot into the small, I don't want any strange resedue on the big pot when I put it on a fire. The canteen itself would be stacked into the bigger pot and it came with a canteen pouch. The lid would then be stored behind the canteen set in the pouch. Also, my lid actually has vents.
Great review. I. Have been buying this brand for several years. I started out with the canteen and pot system. Then I bought the system you tested. It balances the pack. Then came the coffee pot. Now, I have one complete system for each of my packs. I don't like having to move items around pack to pack. Also I've gotten used to the size servings and pack meals pre measured. Clean easy. I drilled small holes at one end of the lid as a strainer system. I am outfitting 5 more packs with this same system for family. I trust these items. Stay safe, stay strong.
Several months ago I got the "full" version (1100 ml canteen + 750 ml pot + 400 ml cup + ventilated lid + hanging cable) for about 30 EUR from a kind of discount store (I'm pretty sure it was imported from Amazon for whatever reasons) Brand new! All packed in a nice backpack where you can put the other cooking items. I used it twice, very pleased with it!
Canteen is the correct term for this product. Canteen is not just a single utensil or container. Defined -"a restaurant provided by an organization such as a military camp, college, factory, or company for its soldiers, students, staff, etc." So canteen kit is accurate. But still as always, great vid and info!
This is an update of the German & other European Military issue mess kit.. If you shop around you can get the full set which includes a cooking systems . This system has been in use from just after WW1.
Yes, I've got some of these (I'm from Hungary). Lot european nations got these, with a bit difference each. It's a great versatile thing, but the heat loss is not so good due to its shape. But comfortable to bring in the original military "canteenbag" close to your body.
Lid, upside down at the bottom of the bag, USGI canteen dropped in the top, all stashed neatly in a single pouch or tucked into a ruck. Done and done. I have a similar full-round system that fits in a small slingpack for over-the-shoulder carry or ladder compatible, depending on circumstance.
That looks a very useful ‘Canteen Cup’ mess kit to me. I’m not confused with the name at all. Two pots is always useful, being able to eat from one whilst your coffee water is boiling up, great. Plenty of room to carry all sorts of stove gear within it too. What’s not to like? Oh and of course, it;s lightweight. I love it. Thanks.
I know you said it didn't come with a canteen, however, since it is the shape of one, and is intended to be used with one, it would have been good to see you take an normal US issue canteen and show that it fits. Also, if you took a normal issue canteen cover and test that fit as well. Thanks for the review.
The mesh bag is for dipping the kit into wash water to remove any suds, and for fast drying. The shape is the canteen shape of the US Army Canteen, which was originally designed to fit inside. The original had army belt buckles that they dropped in the Viet Nam ear, because soldiers found they Clanked with movement.
The canteen part is in reference to a military style canteen would fit in the pot/cup. The pot is almost exactly like the ones issued with our canteens in the Marine Corps, at least while I was in back in the early 2000's.
I own three different canteens that fit this, so i bought this item years ago to use as a hiking cooking system. It works well, and all 3 canteens fit it well. No confusion here.
Thank You Luke, hi Susie, for introducing and testing these thing first us love GOD BLESS and so Appreciate You Aloha Always Sister Chrissy Honolulu HI
I’ve had one of these for a while. If you get one, get the larger one. I really like mine but kick myself for not getting the larger version. Works great with my alcohol stove. Usually my go to for weekend trips.
Nice review, Luke. I like that this system is titanium and that the cup/pot nest together. Also the hanging cable is nice. According to other comments, and yours, there is a larger set that also includes/nests a kidney shaped canteen. If I were to buy this set I would get the larger one due to the included canteen and the apparent holes in the larger pot lid. (A steel/titanium canteen is great for purifying water as well as using it to keep warm in your sleeping bag). The reasons I would not get this is due to what you said regarding the shape, which as stated makes stirring coffee/tea and making something in the pot, or holding the cup to drink from, awkward. The kidney shape also prevents nesting isobutane canisters or bottles of alcohol in the pot if you are using a gas or alcohol stove. There are many other companies, Snow Peak, Rock Creek, Toaks, and others that make round titanium pots/cups for those reasons listed and are of similar quality. Some even include a hanging handle. I think buying this makes sense if you are getting the set with the canteen. Otherwise I would stick with my Toaks/Rock Creek pot/cup combo, unless you prefer something very small/compact.
Hey Luke could you do a follow up video that shows what model canteens fit in this cup? I don't think the Pathfinder will fit, but I think regular issue army canteens and the Nalgene ones fit....Boundless also offers another set that has a bail handle on the cup and a stove, love to see your thoughts on that one too.
I think any of the names will work as per Webster's dictionary noun ; a · a portable chest with compartments for carrying bottles or for cooking and eating utensils ; b · a flask for carrying liquids (as on a hike) ; c · mess kit. Great episode, More adventures ahead.
I was looking at that canteen set a couple years ago. The one with the actual canteen included. But I have a stainless set from years ago. My wife wouldn't let me get it. I did get a titanium emergency whistle from boundless voyage. Appreciate the product. Thanks for your video.
At 73 years young, I'm not about to hike the Appilachian Trail, but I do many day to 3 day hikes. Weight is not a major concern for me, so Titaniam = Meh? I have stailess steel pot & cup, both pruchased from Walmart, but I believe available on Amazon also. The Ozark Trail cup has the same type folding handles holds 18 oz. and goes for $5.47. My pot is a Stanley, 24 oz. comes with lid, and the handle locks in place to hold the lid on. Both are round, and the pot nests into the cup. Lots of room inside, as I carry a propane mini stove, lighter, matches, flint & steel, candle, and fire starter inside mine. And the price is less than half of the Boundless Voyage. Yes, it's 2 lbs, but unless you are very concerned with weight, it works. I was a Scout Master, and used this on camp outs, hunting, and just hiking for the past 20 or more years, and have yet to wear it out.
I half agree with you. It is exactly what it says it is. A canteen mess kit. Not a canteen and mess kit. I will agree at first thought someone ordering this would expect a canteen to be included.
Hello there! While I don’t have this particular set, I do have a another of their titanium cook sets for backpacking and I love it. I thought they were a very budget friendly alternative to the Snowpeak set I originally wanted. Stay well!
I love boundless voyage, i dont have these, i do have their actual canteen kit which is shaped different and i carry with me everyday in my work bag. I have a bunch of their pots along with a couple different twig burners and grill plate. They have the better price and the lids all have lips that stay on the pots.
I've started looking to re-build my kit for backpacking in 2024 so this was pretty useful. I think I'll stick to the round style though. I do like that you can hang this, though honestly i'm usually on an alcohol stove and not really burning anything to hang this over. Still something to think about and come up with a solution for with the round stuff. Take care
fish spreader, can use on a wide mouth water bottle, or a cup if it has two small holes drilled into it, or check out the bushcraft store billy can, or the pathfinder school stainless steel cup
Looks like a decent piece of kit . I have boundless voyage pot set But they called it a pot and pan set but really it's just a 2 pot set lol 1 liter pot and a half liter pot .small pot is used as a lid for the big pot but it's not ideal . Over all I was quite happy w the light weight titanium set. The price was decent 4 yrs ago any way. Cheers Titanium
I can see why they called it that. From above, the pots are kidney shaped, the same basic shape as a standard military canteen. I'm guessing a canteen can slip into the pots the same as the canteen cup that comes with military issue.
it is called a canteen mess kit because that is what the military designation for it was , designed to slide a standard issue kidney canteen into . Although they have taken some liberties with this design usually has no lid or secondary cup.
Hey Luke, please consider adding shout outs of metric measurements. For us here in Europe it is really though to convert the imperial volumes and weights
It is a Canteen Mess Kit because it has 2 components as opposed to just a Canteen Cup. It can be matched with a Canteen and Canteen Stove and put in a Canteen carrier to make a full Kit.
The company makes a round pot with a lid that is a fry pan, if you want to stir easier. I have a one liter pot with a five-and-a-half inch fry pan cover. The non-round shape is to carry next to your body, just like the old canteens.
I think they named it the canteen mess kit because the 750ml version is meant to nest with the 1.1L canteen they sell. Interesting the fully nested version of the setup (kit+canteen) does have venting holes already drilled in the lid, so maybe it's a work in progress
I got Boundless Voyage's very same Canteen Kit, overall I'm very satisfied with it. If you miss the canteen, the latest generation of US-Military Canteens (like Nalgene's kidney-shaped Oasis) fit perfectly in there! I've come to make that combo of plastic Nalgene Oasis and Titanium Boundless Voyage Canteen Kit my preferred Canteen-Set because it allows carrying carbonated soda pops and cleaning the bottle in the dishwasher, while staying able to cook/fry over fire. Ironically, Boundless Voyage don't provide a fitting Titanium canteen (maybe due to copyright on the shape?) As you realized, they do however produce their own canteen in an individual shape, for which you can get another fitting shape of set, also consisting of cup and larger pot plus a MOLLE-compatible camo-pouch. I was slightly irritated by the contact points of the pot and cup becoming polished and shiny (where pot and cup rub against each other, especially when a filled flask puts load on there) so I asked them if they coat their product - they responded that they give their canteen kit a powder-coating treatment consisting of titanium-powder which is brought to stick purely by heat, so it's quite pure Titanium ware afaik. Gotta agree, the price is so intriguingly great for the quality you get! I think their product range also looks like it has many feasible designs. Definitely a brand I'll giva another try again, it holds up in comparison to Keith's Titanium Kit any day!
Good review. The term "canteen" doesn't just refer to a drinking flask. It can also refer to a store, a bar, a mess kit, and, wait for it, a container.
Judging by the pics on amazon, they added holes to the lids on all 3 sets. Don't know if they actually did or not, just putting this out there. Either way it is getting added to my "maybe" list.
Apparently people are confused by the fact that these are designed to fit around a canteen. Clearly, people are not bothering to read the product description.
I like the idea of a tarp shelter instead of a tent. My wife and I travel 48 states on a motorcycle and what do you do about bugs and snakes ? Thanks Doberman
I've enjoyed TOGR for the last ten years but has anyone noticed how its gotten a little weird lately? I can't put my finger on it. Luke seems to be in his own echo chamber recently and seems to just want to go through the motions. I would like to see Luke get into some new activities. How about a guest or two? Hunting, fishing, canoeing, organic gardening, archery, bushcraft shelters, the list goes on and on.
I know the mess kit is an odd shape and a typical canteen doesn't fit in it but boundless voyage sells the mess kit with a canteen and a pouch for it all and I found other canteens with the same shape and design as the mes kit if you wanted to buy just the canteen itself They are out there.
I’ve seen this so many times before and I was curious about it. They have a canteen that goes with these two pieces. Pretty cool if you ask me, but yeah, expensive.
I wonder if the Heavy Cover Inc. titanium canteen would fit in there. AFAIK, they were the first to start offering titanium canteen/mess kits, partnered with Keith, then Keith started doing their own...and now there's a bunch of different brands, but never quite sure how things might fit together.
I watch every video… love them all. But, would love and think it’s interesting, to see what you would rate items you share with Stars.. How many stars would you give this product. 😊
This kit is made to fit into a standard US GI canteen and cover. In the cover place lid first, upside down the the cup then pot, and last a standard GI canteen.😊
I agree. That is why it is called a (CANTEEN KIT) And Infosys that it is a kit for a CANTEEN. And not a CANTEEN, any one who would buy this product thinking it was a CANTEEN should get better instructions..IDIOTS.
I have owned a previous iteration of this product for about 3 years, the set is more squared off at the sides instead of kidney shaped and included a nested 1L wide mouth titanium canteen, also the lid has some vents. While it hasn't been through 'hard use' I have took it on on about half a dozen camping trips and it has been dropped a few times when full(while all nested in the carrying pouch) but there not even minor dents in it. So In my opinion, your conclusion is spot on - its decent quality and value and very functional. The only minor criticism I have is that the lid of the canteen makes an annoying squeaky noise when you are screwing it on, but it is 100% watertight.
*On page 2 of the Boundless Voyage website, the last item listed is what I consider to be the better canteen cooking set. Included in this set is....* (1) titanium, 1100ml, military-style canteen with a wide mouth. Dimensions are 190mm (H) × 129mm (W) × 70mm (D). Weight is 160g. (1) titanium, 750ml, large canteen cooking cup with two shouldered batwing handles. Dimensions are 96mm (H) × 140mm (W) × 84mm (D). Weight is 107g. (1) titanium, 400ml, small canteen cooking cup with two butterfly style handles. Dimensions are 50mm (H) × 140mm (W) × 84mm (D). Weight is 80g. Both canteen cups have double loop fittings on both of the narrow sides of the cup, which will accept the 2, l-shaped, offset hooks that are on both ends of the braided stainless steel pot suspension cable. (1) titanium, lid with three drain holes, a d-ring loop folding handle, and a deeply recessed rim that snugs down over the rolled edge rims of the cups. No dimensions are listed, but when referencing similar lids for TOAKS and other titanium cookware, one can reliably assume that you can add 3-4 mm in both directions, with approximate measurements of 144mm (L) × 88mm (W). Weight is 38g. There is an included synthetic fabric pouch and the total listed weight for the pouch, canteen, large cup, small cup, lid, and the braided wire pot suspension assembly is 557g.
I think the reason why they called it the canteen mess kit is because it's shaped like a canteen. I could be wrong but that's thought on it. I like it. I would like to buy a larger canteen mess kit lol.🙂
Do the cables securely suspended the pot? How likely would it be to accidentally disconnect and fall into fire? Is it a balanced placement of connection points?
So, does a canteen fit inside this one, or not? If it does, then I would say that the name is accurate enough. If I buy a motorcycle trailer but no motorcycle is included (which most people would wouldn't expect), it doesn't mean it isn't a motorcycle trailer.
In case you are living on this Planet, but not in the US

Several months ago I got the "full" version (1100 ml canteen + 750 ml pot + 400 ml cup + ventilated lid + hanging cable) for about 30 EUR from a kind of discount store (I'm pretty sure it was imported from Amazon for whatever reasons)
Brand new!
Aren't those canteen sizes standardized by NATO as well?
Clearly, he doesn't understand that this is how it is to be used. Despite being military.
I have this mess kit and use it with a Nalgene Oasis Tritan canteen nested in it. Also a standard plastic military canteen will fit in it.
The canteen part is in reference to a military style canteen would fit in the pot/cup. The pot is almost exactly like the ones issued with our canteens in the Marine Corps, at least while I was in back in the early 2000's.
I have the same kit, but mine has a canteen and I love it
I own three different canteens that fit this, so i bought this item years ago to use as a hiking cooking system.
I have the Valtcan kit with canteen. The lid has three holes.
Canteen means something slightly differant outside of the states, and this kit fits its description perfectly
I think any of the names will work as per Webster's dictionary
noun ; a · a portable chest with compartments for carrying bottles or for cooking and eating utensils ; b · a flask for carrying liquids (as on a hike) ; c · mess kit.
Great episode, More adventures ahead.
Have one in my EDC. Pocket stove, P-35, and collapsible utensils stowed inside. Good piece of kit.
I was looking at that canteen set a couple years ago. The one with the actual canteen included. But I have a stainless set from years ago. My wife wouldn't let me get it. I did get a titanium emergency whistle from boundless voyage. Appreciate the product. Thanks for your video.
Got it a few years back. The Nalgene "canteen" bottle (just 130gr) fits perfectly in mine, making it a very light complete kit.
Amazing timing! Literally had this in my cart on Amazon, I’ll be sure to use your affiliate link!
Hello there! While I don’t have this particular set, I do have a another of their titanium cook sets for backpacking and I love it. I thought they were a very budget friendly alternative to the Snowpeak set I originally wanted. Stay well!
I think the shape lends itself to packing with a "flatpack" firebox, and may also accommodate other items inside better, circular and or rectangular.
I believe it is called canteen because a US Army canteen is the same shape so it would fit inside of it
Hi Luke, does the Keith titanium canteen fit? That'd be fantastic!
I love boundless voyage, i dont have these, i do have their actual canteen kit which is shaped different and i carry with me everyday in my work bag. I have a bunch of their pots along with a couple different twig burners and grill plate. They have the better price and the lids all have lips that stay on the pots.
Looks like it would pair well with an Esbit folding stove.
Looks like an update European military cook set. Great product and the weight is awesome
I just got a set it has vents on the lid and a cammo bag, I also found their wide mouth canteen that nests inside it but it’s an additional 80 bucks
Looks like they took inspiration from the BCB Crusader complete system. Which comes with stove, cup, canteen, cook pot, that is also kidney shaped.
Looks like a decent piece of kit .
I have boundless voyage pot set
But they called it a pot and pan set but really it's just a 2 pot set lol
1 liter pot and a half liter pot .small pot is used as a lid for the big pot but it's not ideal .
Over all I was quite happy w the light weight titanium set. The price was decent 4 yrs ago any way.
Cheers
Titanium
I can see why they called it that. From above, the pots are kidney shaped, the same basic shape as a standard military canteen. I'm guessing a canteen can slip into the pots the same as the canteen cup that comes with military issue.
Ive had this for a couple years. I like it. Does the job. Mine came with a canteen and a molle pouch
Bought a two pan set from them and is very decent. Use it at lunch for work and camping
For sure going to be checking this out. Seems very well thought out
it is called a canteen mess kit because that is what the military designation for it was , designed to slide a standard issue kidney canteen into .
I bought a couple other things because much cheaper than other titanium items online I have been happy with all their products
Ironically, Boundless Voyage don't provide a fitting Titanium canteen (maybe due to copyright on the shape?)
As you realized, they do however produce their own canteen in an individual shape, for which you can get another fitting shape of set, also consisting of cup and larger pot plus a MOLLE-compatible camo-pouch.
The name is correct they sell a titanium canteen that fits within the nested containers and you put the lid at the bottom of the bag.
I have their canteen set and It’s a different shape it’s square shaped. This kit is designed off the USGI canteen cup.
It's called that because it is the shape of a canteen ... which will fit a canteen perfectly....I' luv mine.
Thanks, Luke. There’s better out there…that are round. 😊. From northern Kentucky.
I like the idea of a tarp shelter instead of a tent. My wife and I travel 48 states on a motorcycle and what do you do about bugs and snakes ? Thanks Doberman
Nice kit. Looks very similar to the Pathfinder titanium canteen kit, minus the canteen.
I wonder about health effects eating out of non-stainless cookware. Aluminium & titanium
In the USN canteen products could be drink or food and are refered to as " Geedunk".
I know the mess kit is an odd shape and a typical canteen doesn't fit in it but boundless voyage sells the mess kit with a canteen and a pouch for it all and I found other canteens with the same shape and design as the mes kit if you wanted to buy just the canteen itself They are out there.
I would love to know if the indentation on the lid serves any specific purpose.
I’ve seen this so many times before and I was curious about it. They have a canteen that goes with these two pieces. Pretty cool if you ask me, but yeah, expensive.
i have this set with a canteen and it is a great set. i have a great setup with this and a Gcc from Centerline system
Looks like it’s made to go with the military canteen. Throw the lid in the bottom, nest with canteen and put in the military pouch that’s made for it.
I wonder if the Heavy Cover Inc. titanium canteen would fit in there. AFAIK, they were the first to start offering titanium canteen/mess kits, partnered with Keith, then Keith started doing their own...and now there's a bunch of different brands, but never quite sure how things might fit together.
I do have this kit. Very good kit. But They need to make available a titanium canteen that fits the set!
Boundless voyage also have titanium canteen that made too nest.
The first thing I thought when i saw it was "oh its a "cups/canteen"" but ive been around the military all my life.
Yea I’d say it’s just called a canteen cup because the cup itself fits a military style canteen
I have this and a titanium cup .Great products
*On page 2 of the Boundless Voyage website, the last item listed is what I consider to be the better canteen cooking set. Included in this set is....*
(1) titanium, 1100ml, military-style canteen with a wide mouth.
I have it and rather than buying the expensive water canteen, I just use my nalgene and it fits perfectly.
The Nalgene Oasis canteen fits in it. That’s what I use with mine.
What about "canteen shape cook kit" 😀
