Did you know there is more to Shanghai than sleek, modern skyscrapers? Enter the Former French Concession, dubbed 'The Paris of China'! The French Concession is a charming neighborhood lined with cobblestone streets, winding alleys and beautiful handicraft shops. Strolling the picturesque tree-lined avenues seems to make time slow down in this bustling city.
Not sure what to do in Shanghai? The French Concession is a really great area and not to be missed on your visit to the city! It's a really good way of seeing another side of the city, that is not super modern with skyscrapers.

Tianzi fang used to be somewhere shanghai locals go for shopping some nice designs, now it is more for tourism to be honest. we buy clothes in independent stores in changle road and surroundings like fuming road. There are too many taobao unoriginal tourist targetted merchandise in tianzifang now sadly..
Oh really? That's not a good evolution. We did see some small handicraft shops though.
SHANGHAI IS MORE THAN JUST SKYSCRAPERS: This Is The French Annex/Occupied China.
Shanghai is so beautiful! Can't wait to see more of this incredible city over the next few days 😍👌🏻
yes we still have to look for the Chinese eiffel tower. That has to be in the French Concession somewhere, no?! :D
Yay! I enjoyed this episode. Can’t wait to see the French Concession on Winter 😍
Yes that would be amazing!
Glad to see you continue to have a great time in China. Excellent job with the videos!
thanks loumcast!! :)
It was really nice to discover this hidden side from Shanghai. The French Concession is a really great neighbourhood to just wander around and get lost. The food is INCREDIBLE! I'll gladly take more donations for that black truffle toast.
More Shanghai videos to come soon!
I love TianZiFan and when I visited it last time, we stayed near the entrance of TianZiFan, the oddest accommodation we had while in China! I really enjoy your travel Vlog! It brought back so many travel memories of my own!
Glad you enjoyed it. We really liked Shanghai. Such a vibrant city.
Really awesome video in the French concession here! I like it where you zoom in real close to the food (example the carrot cake), it really shows the texture. I can see sometime in the future you will get a Foodie sponsor for this channel!
Oh that would be awesome! We do anything for free food :D
Hello from Dali, China!!!! We just moved from Shanghai (which we loved). So glad to see it again
3:50 Bamboo scaffolding is very common in Hong Kong as well. Here those bamboo sticks are tied with plastic straps.
Awesome! Thanks for your video lovely couple introducing real life in China's big city!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Hahaha....Kim is such a beautiful character, always smiling and bright like Shanghai. How not to fall in love with her? As usual, you guys' video shots are straight on great!
Om Ni you are officially the sweetest 😘 that really made me (Kim) smile 😊🙏🏻

I really love you both for sharing this wonderful video of Shanghai.
Thanks, Albert. Glad you enjoyed it. Have you been to Shanghai?
@@NaickKim I am Malaysian chinese and I haven't been to China. Nice to hear from you. Thanks.
Just something from my understanding, bamboo construction ladders are mainly for low buildings, they were used form many many many years already, best environmental friendly way. The electricity wires, government now is putting them underground with all the gas, cable, and others. But they are doing one street at a time without too much interruption and usually wait till the road needs to maintain. So some of streets are done and hence no electricity wires anymore. About parks, quite a lot of green fields are only constructed 15 years ago. It's quite tough to get the land by then already. The trees are much bigger now. There are many much larger parks locating on the edge of the downtown. This is why The new districts of Shanghai tend to have better city plan as it is easier to implement. I believe for a long time, city growth in China was not well planned or at least the planning was interrupted. Now resume to right way.
I can imagine they are not building skyscrapers with the bamboo ladders. Yes, we noticed the electricity is like that in the more historic neighbourhoods. We saw the same thing in the Hutongs in Beijing. Which parks would you recommend in Beijing?
Oh my, love this French area, plus the weather's perfect. And as foodies we enjoy your eatable adventures.
Would be interested to see a list of your gear. Always enjoy your beautiful B Roll shots :) Maybe even to the typical Amazon product partner links?
Another fun share.
Best, James and Kim
Oh, and we're hoping to be in Denmark before Christmas.
We had a list of gear in our old descriptions, but back then it wasn't really useful and cluttering our descriptio's. I actually made a list on kit.com last week. I'll work on it to include it with our amazon links (but have to renew since it expired, woops).
Quick list would be:
Canon 80D
canon 10-18mm ef-s
Sigma 24mm art 1.4
Canon 50mm 1.8 (this is used for the food b roll)
Zhiyun crane plus gimbal
DJI Mavic air
Rode Video Micro Plus (since Beijing, before it was the rode video micro).
@@NaickKim Nice! We hear there's genuinely possible to add revenue from Amazon referrals, and now that your views are climbing it might be a good addition. Have you checked out the new Canon R7X iii? We're thinking of buying after they update the 24fps function and autofocus in November.
@@salanicus Yes it can add some revenue, which is why we're looking at it. Every bit helps! I haven't really looked into the G7x series. I've only heard great things about them. We really prefer to have the possibility to change lenses, etc. If we would change cameras I would look at going to a full frame set-up. It would allow us to use a 16-35mm 2.8 (pretty high-end lens) as a vlogging lens, which would mean a real bump in quality. But the camera + lens upgrade would be a few k haha. Otherwise we're very happy with our set-up.
Looks amazing!!! I’m heading out there in March, and check it out.
Have fun there Gerardo! Let us know if you need any info on Shanghai. It's a great city!
I am a new subsciber.... just because you guys so bubbly and lively... what a lovely couple..
Thank you so much Ida! Where are you from?😊
Nice video! Love your edit and background music!
Thanks a lot Ming! Have you been to Shanghai?
@@NaickKim YES, for several times.
@@mingzhang9404 ha we will definitely be coming back here as well! We love it. Such a cool city :)
Everything looks nice there. Have a great time. 😘
thank youuuuuu ;)
Hong Kong is also a city in China that attracted a lot of tourists in the past, but there have been too many violent protests in Hong Kong recently. Tourists are not recommended to stay in Hong Kong. I personally recommend transiting through Hong Kong to Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Guangzhou (cities in Guangdong province) and Shanghai. There is a high-speed railway. Tourists can travel from Hong Kong International Airport to Kowloon Station by Airport Express (this is a fast train but not the high-speed railway the media refers to), and then walk along a covered footbridge with good signage to the Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, which is the high-speed railway station. There are always sufficient seats on high-speed railway trains, so there is no need to reserve in advance.
Thanks for the info. The situation in Hong Kong is indeed difficult at the moment. I hope both parties can find a solution to their differences.
If you are in Guangdong province, you should visit Shenzhen. It’s a lovely city. When you are there take a half day or day trip to OCT ( overseas Chinese town). It’s a small peaceful artistic town. I grew up there. Shenzhen is more expensive than other Chinese cities but in my opinion it’s worth it. Fall and winter is not as hot and humid so it’s a good season to visit.
such a lovely coupe!
ow so interesting to see that little street/ alley with lot of shops...we may check this place too if we have a chance! What's the name of the area again? that carrot cake looks sooo delicious..^^
It's called Tianzifang. The carrot cake was soooooo good!
@@NaickKim Ok noted! Thanks guyss ^^
Enjoy ur trip in Shanghai!
Thank you Yuchao! Where are you from?
Shanghai is Beautiful, we love it so much
So do we 🤩
i worked in Shanghai for Tesco which you must of seen theirs a few there, i stayed at the Raddison in the french district, your video brought back some great memory's, did you go to the fake markets?
awesome
Thanks!
Im so hungry after watching your video at midnight
Haha, sorry for that. Just wait until our 'Shanghai 1 dollar street food' is uploaded in a couple of hours...
Do you plan visit some cities nearby Shanghai, such as Hangzhou, Suzhou, Nanjing and Wuzhen, they all within 2 hours of train. Have been to Wuzhen before, it is a water town and definitely worth to visit.
We were thinking about maybe going to Hangzhou or Suzhou. It would be a nice day trip from Shanghai. But we're not sure yet.
@@NaickKim beijing style is northern culture. hangzhou style is southern culture.
Thanks a lot! We are probably going to Guilin and Yangshuo next!
I spent my early years living in that part of Shanghai. It wasn't that posh at the time.
Yes, China changes very quickly.
Im attending NYU shanghai and in the first week I learned about the complete change at xintiandi. Just wish I could get there and see it all for myself
2:11,dayyyum that's cold lmao
Tell me about it! The north pole got nothing on her!
What is the name of this place I heard you say Xintiandi but the place you are at you said is more beautiful, but I didn't quite hear the name of the place? with the narrow alleys!
Took me a bit of time, but finally found it haha: Tian Zi Fang market.

Beautiful 👌
Yes Shanghai is an incredible city.
wow nice
Thanks a lot! It really is beautiful.
Have you ever experienced the walking on the clouds in shanghai tower. Very exciting.
No we haven't yet. Do you mean going to the top floor on the tower?
NO, it is walkig outside of the tower. This is a very extreme challenges. It looks very dangerous. I'm not sure now, still keep this program. Besides, I never tried it.

We'll have a look, it sounds exciting!
I remember, not in Shanghai Tower, but Shanghai Jinmao Tower.
fork on the table, hahahahahaha
Thanks for getting that joke :D
👍👍💖
How did you find the hostels you stayed in? Enjoy your banter. 😎
Hi Michael! We book our hostels almost always via booking.com The review system is very reliable (if they have a decent amount of reviews, I'd say at least 50, but the more the better) and they have a very large choice and great filter options. We hardly ever book through anything else these days.
@@NaickKim Thank-you. Enjoy India.🙏
新天地's pronunciation is: sheen ten dee
Thanks a lot!
Why won't you guys come to Shenzhen? Let me show you around my city.
Thanks for the invitation Richard, but unfortunately we don't have time to visit Shenzhen this time. We heard some really good things about it!
Naick & Kim Next time you can go to Shenzhen, its a technology city in China, just like San Francisco in the US
what street guys
To be honest. local people don’t go to TZF to shop haha. Only tourists would buy things from shops there.
Xin tian di is really popular among young people
It's very nice to walk around but we didn't buy anything. Otherwise we would have to carry it all around in our backpacks for the next few months 😅
Yeah, I believed that the French cultural arts are still preserve within this area. Positively, the occupation by some foreign power has brought numerous development towards it's colonies. That's where the cross exchange of western & the eastern culture begins & spurred uncountable benefits to both sides mutually
One thing bad in China is food, how you going to keep fit with all these delicious food to say hi to you.
Yes that is true haha. We tend to eat too much here, because everything is sooooo good. We just did a street food tour in Shanghai and we feel stuffed.
yes indeed...China is the best place to ruin our diet plan 😂😂😂

@@NaickKim nice. welcome to china
Agreed..it looks Chinese. Not French by far!
some parts are a bit more French, but mostly it looks Chinese these days, with perhaps a twist of French style in there too ;)
Tianzifang is behind my apartment
Nice! We would love to spend more time in Shanghai. How is the situation there now?
@@NaickKim Shanghai is much better now, and welcome to visit again, hope to bring you good memories.
非常有趣的游记,祝你们在大陆玩得开心。有空可以去看看大熊猫,世界上最可爱的动物(。・ω・。)ノ♡
I heard that the salaries of foreign workers there are very nice?
No idea, we are just travelling through here. But since most expats work in jobs that are high-end, the salaries probably will be too.
@@NaickKim nah, i said most are probability English teachers which don't pay well, and have zero career advancement. Shanghai is probability better since there's a lot of foreign multi-nationals.
That might be true yes. Most people I know are more high-end expats so I might be biased haha. Do you have an idea what a normal English teacher salary would be?
@@NaickKim For Shanghai, perhaps 10~50k RMB a month depends on your level
I like the f*cking park 😄
it is not French. The houses were rebuild after 1949. Plus the Chinese don’t like hearing French concessions. It is offensive.
Yes someone told us afterwards. It is called the Hengfu historic area right?
@@NaickKim We can call it ''Former French area'. It's easier to understand and sounds more pleasant.
Calm down, it's only history, facts.
@The Mythbuster True that
not offensive at all. history can't be denied no matter u like it or not.
:)
Hi Jon 😉 I just watched a video on your channel, the poem 't was the night before Christmas. It is one of my favorite holiday things to read that every year but I hadn't heard it yet this year so that was really nice, thank you! Loved the santa hat too 🤗
@@NaickKim I'm very happy that you enjoyed it.
I am a Shanghainese. The ally market at the beginning of the video is not a classic french concession of shanghai, far from it.
👍
这是在中国吗?
Spitting is really disgusting. I hate when people doing that. What a shame.
Indeed haha. Especially the sound...
