4:20 The BBQ is called "红柳烤肉" in Chinese, literally means "Grilled meat with red willow sticks". The red willow branch is apart of the ingredients, because it can bring special flavour to the meat.

    • @NaickKim
      @NaickKim  4 года назад +2

the wooden sticks are actually a kind of very special salt cedar, in the process of roasting , the fresh saltcedar branches will secrete a tiny little sticky juice which not only can let the smell of the mutton be decomposed, but also add some unique flavor of the saltcedar

Those are not the random Skewers, those are from a tree called Salt cedar, particularly live in the dryer area in northwest China. The original grill skewers with lamb must be from that tree. In order to get the extra special aroma from it during the grilling. (It is ok if you understand the the culture of China but please don’t make conclusions so easy just by your own guessing.

4:14 These are not "just wooden sticks", these are branch of Saltcedar tree (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamarix) , these trees can be found in desert/gobi and those dry places in western China, people from that area intentionally using these branches to do lamb barbecues since it generates special "smoky flavor", in Chinese it is called "红柳", transliterate "red willow". Also we can notice those two men who doing the red willow barbecue are from fast west China judging by their accent (very likely to be Xinjiang Muslim), which made all sense for them to use "red willow" branch (saltcedar) for lamb BBQ, you are lucky to encounter this in Shanghai, but you will find a lot more of them in Western China Cities like Xi'an, Lanzhou, Xining, Urumqi etc.

Whereever coming to any Chinese city, it is better try some local BUFFETS, cuz it provides many food choices while much less expensive, here are those my recommended buffets in SH:
    1,鑫海汇烤肉自助餐厅(巴黎春天店)
    address: 4th floor,762 tianshan road,SH,China
    2,多伦多海鲜自助餐厅(汇金百货店虹桥店)
    3,汉巴味德自助餐厅(嘉定宝龙广场店)
    4,東盛自助料理(南京东路店)
    ............
Those are the buffets around 100 yuan per person and its style like toasting meats, seafood, and japanese sushi. I personally recommend that you beautiful two pick my first one on the list that is toast meating style buffet in which you pick raw meat plates and put the meat on hot iron plate(waterless, not hot pot) to roast it.
    Here are the tips:
1,no picking lamb meat(might be duck), only pick beef and pork, because beef and pork are not fake, ask waiter to find them.
2, There are many boxes with different sauces you can select any of them to combine with each other, better make your favourite combination , cuz thats all the flavor is about coming from, I would choose sesame sauce as a preference along with vinegar, garlic, and coriander filled in cuz this will enhance your appetite bigly:)
3, soak raw onion with toasted meat in the sauce and then eat, if you see the raw meat covered with sauce on top in the freezer, dont pick it, cuz it is soaked too salty with the sauce, which is not good.
4, every time i go eat , i only pick beef and maybe a little pork as well, plus onion, veggies, dessert, and drinks.
5,if those places are far, find some nearby buffet, a chinese brand buffet called"bigpizza" that is pizza buffet, beautifully done, but no store in Shanghai.
    ......
The third one my list is Brazilian mixed chinese style roasting meat buffet, waiter roast all kinds of meats like beef, lamb, sausage, oyster, beef tongue, shrimp, and come upon you to give some, you wont be able to come pick the raw meat but to serve the different meat every few minutes, i believe it is more private and spacious, maybe it is more suitable than first one.
    .........
Anyways, eat limitless food until talking to yourself i am really full enough not willing to eat tomorrow, then end the meal, haha, trust me young chinese people love buffet(A beautiful French word):)

Love your video but a quick note. The brown sauce you have in your Jianbing is called “tian mian jiang”, translates to sweet flour sauce. It’s made out of wheat flour and soybean, not red beans. Red beans are usually made into a much sweeter and denser kind of paste, and such kind of paste is usually not pairing with savory food. Just a little bit lecture on food culture and hope you enjoy your stay, try and film more foods! 😉
