I'm japanese.and I've visited China Shenzhen.I used thought Chinese would discriminate me(japanese). But When I go to China.They are really friendly,kind....even They know I'm japanese.and some people saying to me"konnichiwa"...........I think Chinese people are very friendly to foreigners.....not only white people.
I'm a Chinese, from an inland province, now living in Shanghai 3 years ago when I received the offer from my university in Shanghai, I was a bit worried. Some people said that locals in Shanghai would discriminate against us, and take us as illiterate people from rural places. Actually it never happens. So that's it. Those guys exist, but you seldom, or maybe never encounter them.
As for my own attitude towards Japanese... My grandfather were nearly killed by a Japanese soldier in 1942, when he was just a 6-year-old boy. A bullet flew just a few centimeters away from his head. If I were a person living during the war, I would hate your people. But the war ended, 70 years ago. I'd always take those Chinese people who fought during the war as heroes. But I'd not hate you. You are not our enemies. I'm really interested in Japanese culture and history. btw, I know a lot about your 戰國時代(sorry for not knowing this word in English)
lo ve I think most people may ask you about some anime stuffs... If you show up in Nanjing’s WWII museums, people may quite like you cuz they may see you as the type of Japanese who do reflect on the past. Nanjing does receive lots of visitors from Japan btw...

And not just for the purpose of eating, for various purposes. Plus I do talk to some Chinese people from Hongkong on whatsapp, they themselves say that they eat everything.
Probably thats the reason why foreigners' chinese cant get improvement. LOL, many people can speak english and when u say something in Chinese, people would compliment you. Haha, tho it's different for me, maybe i'm very strict on this, i'd often tell my american friends to study more chinese for their chinese doesnt really sound like someone who has studied here for years since they came here to do so.
I lived in China for 2 months and it was a life-changing, eye-opening positive experience. In my opinion, you can never truly understand a country and its people until you have lived and study within it. Highly recommend visiting all the major cities, historical sites and the sublime mountainous regions!
Totally agree with you! I lived in China for 15 years and loved every moment while I was there. The only downside is that the govt throws you out once you reach sixty unless you are an BIG investor, academic from a famous Tier 1 Western university or have some exceptional skills which China badly wants (for example a software or AI engineer). Marrying a local will not necessairly save you lol!. The people though are real friendly!
I spent a year and 5 months in Beihai, China. I was totally amazed with the country and the people. What I had always thought about China, totally opposite of that. The people are helpful and they really try to make you feel at home and work hard to try and communicate with you. I fell in love with my wife there and the people. I wouldn't mind living there forever. China is an incredible place to live and learn.
Beihai is such a small village or it was when I was visiting there in 2009, how beautiful the sea is so clear and the sand is pure white a nice small place, I had a hotel room very close to the water, I will never forget my friend that traveled many hours by train just to meet me there, oh what fun we had I remember her and her many kindnesses.

I visited China 15 years ago and paid a visit to The wall at Badaling which was wonderful , I pushed myself a little bit too much on the many steps and being a COPD sufferer I had to sit down in the middle of the climb and I was immediately surrounded by Chinese people offering all kinds of help and expressions of sympathy for my plight ( I was truly gasping for air ) they were just wonderful to me , I feel that in most of North America I would have been treated as if I were drunk and stepped around, I am now 80 but still love China and its people.
I visited China last year solo, as a tourist. Am Indian, female, late 20s. Honestly, everything was so unexpected. I had been warned about the taciturn nature of the Chinese but they were the warmest people I have ever come across. They give you plenty of space but the when you need help they go out of their way to help you out. Highly impressed by the infrastructure too. Coming from a highly populated country, I can completely understand and empathize with the problems. Yes there were some experiences that were perhaps not so pleasant but on the whole a beautiful and somewhat misunderstood country. Would go again if I get a chance. Would encourage everyone to go. Leave your phone, google maps won't work. Ask people for help, you'll make friends. The only complaints I heard were from some young tourists visiting from more "developed" western nations but honestly if you want every country to be like your own, why travel? And Shanghai is great, the food, the people, the views from the Bund. Lovely. IMO.

my dad's been to china twice now and he told us how pleasantly surprised he was by the way the locals were so friendly and welcoming eventhough he's an indian. i think its important to personally visit the particular place to debunk those stereotypes which we have in our minds regarding that place. once i grow older and becom self dependent, i would totally visit china! love from india❤
I wish they would have been able to ask a black-skinned person. My experience visiting China (Beijing, Harbin) was made of a lot of staring and pointing fingers at me. I overcame it by smiling to people and willingly taking pictures with them, and it didn't discourage me from going back. Because I really want to understand and enjoy the culture (not everybody is like that). When people were engaging with me, they were the nicest and they shared the yummiest of traditional Chinese food. I can't wait to visit again!

Pointing fingers always existed when foreigners were present in public because the ethnicities/races in China are not as diverse as other places, so local people might feel curious about foreigners and point at them though this action may be considered as “impolite”. But I still feel sorry about that if you did not had a good feeling with the painting fingers.

I am a foreigner currently living in China, but not in the big known cities. I must say that the people here are very friendly, and will definitely help you if needed. I find living in China convenient, with wechat and alipay and all that. Learning and speaking their language will actually make your life ten times easier, even just the basics. With VPN, I think it's not entirely a problem. The censorship can be annoying, but you can still access almost everything, I don't see much difference. It can be a personal preference, so I agree that you should visit first before deciding to live here. Overall, I think China is a good country. They have a phrase that goes "入乡随俗" meaning "When in Rome, do it like how the Romans do", when you follow such value, you won't have any problem living here.
I’m from Shanghai. Here are some suggestions for foreigners to live in China: 1. Learn some basic Chinese words since most of Chinese people don’t speak good English. 2. Do not feel weird if someone wants to take a picture with you in rural area as they are just curious about you. 3. It’s easy to make friends here because many people are passionate about other cultures or also want to practice their English 4. Respect and learn Chinese culture because it is very helpful for you to live and work

I was born in China but raised in the US. I’ve been back a few times, it’s quite a fascinating culture. I enjoyed my experiences in China very much!! It’s funny when I would order food, my waiter/waitress or cashier expected mandarin to come out, but instead English did. It surprised quite a few people!! I would encourage anyone to travel to China, at least once in their life!
I’ve been to China nine times, and going for a tenth time soon. My wife is from Shanghai, so I’ve had the opportunity to learn about Chinese culture from her and my visits. Always new things to learn and see when I’m there. It’s fascinating.

I visited China a year ago for few weeks and I had nothing but good experiences in the country. I think majority of Chinese people are really sweet, kind and welcoming. A good example of this kidness was when I was flying back home from China; my connecting flight at Shenzhen got delayed by a day so I had to spend a day all alone in a completely new city with my very broken Chinese. Even then, all the other passengers tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible and help me out in every way they could even when we didn't really have a way to communicate with each other. I personally believe that if you are kind, polite and open to new cultures you will enjoy China a lot. Of course, just like in every other country, you may meet people who may view you rather negatively and may be rude towards you but just try to not care about them too much and concentrate more on the amazing people, because there is for sure more people like them!

I’m basing this off personal experience and the experience of a couple of friends, but Chinese people are usually very filled with hospitality. If you speak Chinese and immerse yourself with the people, often times you’ll realize that they come to accept you as part of the group. While as a lot of friends who I️ know who have lived in Japan had always struggled with acceptance despite living there for many years amongst the people and speaking fluent Japanese. Perhaps it’s just an etiquette thing, Chinese people may come off as too straight forward or maybe even rude in some cases, but at the end of the day it’s because of those reasons that they’re easy to get close with, they are very open and accepting, especially to those who understand their culture. If you do something wrong or not acceptable in their society, they’re not afraid to tell you s that you make sure not to do it next time, but they make sure it’s in an amiable way. They also love to learn your culture and ask a LOT of questions about life outside of China. While as in japan the people are very reserved and less likely to actually speak what’s on their mind. While as they are very polite and respectful, you’ll always have a feeling of isolation and alienation because they don’t really see you as “part of the group” no matter how connected with Japan you are. Sometimes they may even say bad things behind your back despite acting very sweet in front of your face, but this all has to do with local etiquette. The Japanese are taught to never come off as very strong minded and opinionated, while as in China they are taught to be accepting but open and firm about what they believe in. This is just speaking from a general stand point though, obviously others may of had different experiences in both countries but this is my personal experience and that of those who I️ know have lived in one or both of the countries
I think the original poster's point was what you just said. He said you may be alienated in Japan b/c of your foreign-ness and you basically said the same thing to agree with him. If a culture cannot accept a person b/c they use "weird Japanese phonics" I feel very bad for the people they reject. In the U.S, it is very rude not to accept someone just because they use "weird phonics" but I guess it also depends on person to person. Everything is very generalized though. I find Japanese people super polite personally.
I kind of gave this a thought at one point or another but you said it very well. I think you're generally correct with the statements. Japanese people are definitely super polite. As how they will accept a foreigner? I've always heard that integrating was difficult for foreigners. Chinese people on the other hand seem blunt. They'll tell you straight to your face if you look weird or smell or whatever. On the flip side, you can feel more at home in that sense b/c you know there isn't really hard feelings it's just people speaking their head and people with their hearts on their sleeves. I do get the sense too that they accept you as one of them given enough time. You opened my head there : ) that's such an interesting point.

I’m an American born Chinese, and when I went to China it was really nice. I felt rlly at home even though I grew up in America for 15 years, and it was awesome being the majority. I never got special treatment like whites and blacks do in China, as I looked like a local, but I guess I fit the role too well. A few college aged white dudes who are definitely from America went up to me in the middle of a restaurant and were somehow surprised that there was a Chinese teen in a restaurant. They tried speaking Chinese and gave me a fist bump, never told them I spoke English and I heard them talking about how cool it was to meet me a local. Overall 10/10 definitely would do again.
I have been in China for many years and have mostly had good experiences. I wanted a life of adventure and this place has provided that. Many things happen quickly here.
As a Italian Chinese, I lived in Shanghai for one year, it was probably the best time in my life, a lot of fun, new friends from everywhere around the word, living there you can really understand the word “citizen of the world”.

I was living in shenzhen for 2 years I am an Indian and Chinese people are very friendly and they are very helpful and I had a lot of Chinese frnds and they use to invite me in Indian restaurants also and one time my wallet got pick pocket in the market and a local Chinese actually helped me to drop me in my room with the taxi fare and the next day when I invited her in my home she came I offered them to have lunch they did but when I offered her the taxi fare she refused and told me india china frnds and neighbours with a smile so yes i have lived in a lot of countries but Chinese are very down to earth nice and frndly people

I am Italian too and to be honest I had a great impression on China before coming. After moving there it even improved. China is a great country with great people (especially mainlanders), unfairly object of racist stereotypes. For sure nothing and no one is perfect, they have their flaws too, but in general they are very friendly and curious about different cultures. Plus, if you speak even a little Chinese they all will be sooooo pleased. Another thing that I like is that Chinese always try to take you out and offer meal and refuse to make you pay...well, that's not always true in Shanghai or outside mainland China, but the rest of mainlanders do it :-P Plus, Mandarin is such a beautiful, musical language. I repeat it, nobody's perfect, but China is a great place with great people.
I find it odd that people's impression about china often lay on two extremes. There are many tourists, like you, who shared nice stories about travelling to China. However, there are also many others who complained about how Chinese mainlands are a bunch of materialistic, rude, manipulative and evil backstabbers. Next month I will be travelling there and meet some Chinese mainlands whom I befriended while I'm studying in Singapore. Such contrasting views that youtubers have against China does concern me in some ways.
I have been coming to China for many years to work in the shoe industry and have considered moving there many times. I love the counry, the culture, the vibe, the food.... but this video is sooo recognizable: the worries about visa which get more difficult to obtain all the time and the worries about the current direction of politics are keeping me from making the step.
Even though there are political conflicts between my country and China, the people I met in China treated me unexpectedly nice! What surprised me the most was the fact that they willingly wanted to learn more about my country's culture! I've been to a lot of cities in different China's provinces for travelings, language and culture studies; I can conclude from my past and current experiences that China is worth visiting.
Rule of thumb boys and girls: Don't comment on a foreign country's politics unless you're specifically asked about it. Even then, refrain from criticizing.
Recently just came back from China where I visited Nanjing, Suzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, and Beijing. It was absolutely beautiful and amazing and as a teenager visiting by myself in a foreign country, it was very safe and everyone was super nice to me. So I would definitely would go back.
All of my travels in China were by long distance bus and or trains for two years, I never felt uncomfortable anywhere I took vacation from my work and traveled to different places in China I found China to be a wonderful country with very kind people.

Shanghai is already the most international city in China, like a bubble for foreigners, so if you are planning to visit other places, be prepared for the culture shock.
The irony being that Asian foreigners I have met generally want more recognition and to stand out more in public, while the visible Foreigners (White, Black, etc...) wish they could just blend in and go along with their day without 1298132 people pointing to them and saying 'laowai!' or doing antisocial retarded things (just because they are visible foreigners) every single day. I wish we could switch side with my fellow Asian foreigners.

I lived in China for 2 months this past summer! Besides getting sick very often and the air pollution, it was absolutely and adventure to me. Even though I got homesick at the end, I definitely find myself missing Asia already and I really can't wait to go back again. It's just such a looooong history and so much you can discover and I'd love to discover more someday! I also rarely got any kind of discrimination, if anything I kept getting compliments and I feel like people approached me a lot more there than I've been in America.
Euan Ross basically I love the food, but like the guy said in the video, the quality of the food really messed me up. Especially anything dairy I had to stop eating. I probably got sick about 3 times from that and then the air pollution made me have a cough the whole second month I was there.
I haven't been to Tianjin! I went to Beijing, Jinan, Qufu, and Qingdao. If you want some advice, I recommend bringing some imodium, probiotics, vitamin C with you. If you even actually catch something, drink lots and lots of bottled water and drink it with pedialyte if you can, and also try to see if you can bring the "Cipro" antibiotic with you!

I only visited China... It was amazing, the best 3 weeks of my life... Mostly, because of people. I am surprised that no one mention the overall feeling of safety in China🤔 It is unreal country with so many contrasts. It would be my living destination place of I would be able to move 👍

It actually might be that the person approaching him thought he's gay. I've had a gay friend of mine telling me stories of people who overtrust their gaydars and hitting on, especially westerners, who they came across on the street lol
could have been some rude local people. The fashion of not asking income doesn't appear until recent years in China and there were always rumor(could be true) that dark-skin people has longer "thing". And some of chinese males, especially in rural areas usually consider themselves "friend" once they chat a few word with a stranger and ask vague questions.

I'm so glad Asian Boss posted this. I went to China, specifically in Hangzhou and I am very happy I got the chance to stay there for 1 week. It's not what I expected. The city is clean, safe, and the subway is superb. I am so surprised that they don't use cash anymore, they just use their phone to buy something or even paying for the train. I'm from Philippines, I have a tan skin and when we went to Nanjing with my friends, people in the subway are staring at us, we just realized later that we're the only foreigners inside the train or i don't know, it is so weird. I want to go back again and work as an English teacher but I read a lot of blogs about teaching English in China, they prioritize whites, umm yeah white people from the WEST. No matter how good you speak English, have license in teaching, have a bachelor's degree and master's degree, they will only pay you less and prefer the whites, which I think is unfair. But that's how the mentality work. so okay i still want to work in China, it's a wonderful country.

When I was in China for teaching English many many people wanted to take pictures with me because I lived in a comparable 'small' city. They were not used to see foreigners. When I went to a club or bar I had no problems to go inside and find a group which I could join without paying for anything. Even if I wanted to pay they won't let me lol. They were just happy to make contact with a foreigner and take pictures xD it may sound a bit odd but well.. its understandable.. and most of them are actually very nice to you and you can make many friends haha it was a fun time. i miss it
Island Groovies : I read that the government has tightened up the requirements and now only native speakers are permitted to teach English; i.e. British, Australian, Canadian, New Zealander, etc.
Thats China. Reality is different form goverment's decisions ) More and more schools and especially kindergardens want to hire foreign teacher. Usually thats really difficult for them to find native speaker with linguistic education. And also they often like to pay less for non-native speaker. So everyone with level upper intermediate has chance. But situation is not so easy as before. Especially with visa
I went there this year with my parents and it was amazing, such a great place and I even want to go back, I really do because I feel like I didn't see anything. Shangai is such a great city
visited china couple weeks ago and i think chinese people are very welcoming. but english speaking people are kinda hard to find but thats fine because even tho they cant speak english, they are still giving their best effort to help us as tourists. definitely going to go back soon!
As a foreign med student in china, best things I find are Alipay and just general safety. Also only some old people are prejudice(although the elderly patients are quite friendly). Younger chinese people are pretty cool with things

I spent 3 weeks in China in 2012 and traveled around the North-Central region. I had a wonderful time and have many fond memories of the people there. Of all the places I visited, I enjoyed the city of Xining the most with it's interesting architecture, great food, and blend of minority groups. I did end up getting sick in Beijing because of the air, but once I got out of the city center my symptoms went away.
China is beautiful.. I had my first solo travel there last 2019 and i was amazed with the country. People are warm and there is so much to see. I wish to live there at least a year to see and experience more of China. My perception really changed because of that experience.

I used to live in China for one year. It was such a nice experience. I was living in Shanghai and travelled around the country. Best period of my life. The only thing that kind of bothers me a bit but also make me laugh sometimes is the fact that people would assume that I love coconut, banana, and mango because I am black... and that I can dance like Beyonce (that I don't). lmao

Recently visited china with my bf; he is from Beijing so I was able to see many places and experience daily life. I really enjoyed it. It is a beautiful country. The people are welcoming. Only thing that was hard for me to get used to was that people were always looking and pointing at me lol. But they mainly do that because they are curious about you. I’ll be going back in February for the Spring Festival and to spend more time with his family. Definitely think about visiting china; you’ll have a great experience.

Back in college,I once met a black couple in our school.The husband seemed to ask for help,and I was so excited because I as a village boy in China had never talked to foreigners in English which I had learned for years. After studying and living in the US for 6 years, one of the things I love about China is you can walk on the street in the middle of the night and feel safe. Never really appreciated this growing up.
I'm Filipino American but when I was in a half day stop in Guangzhou most of the Chinese mistakenly thought I spoke Mandarin. So I felt bad when I had to respond back in English on China South airlines, at the airport, and at the store. There were scammers at the airport who wanted to give expensive taxi rides, but other retailers and hotel staff were great and helpful. There was just a large communication barrier. If I ever go back to China, I will try to make more of an effort to speak Chinese, even brokenly.
Don't think that matters. Appearance is always something people judge the first from, and as long as they don't discriminate you for it, that's fine. When it comes to learning Chinese, unless you plan to move to China or do business with Chinese people, it's totally optional.
I went to China as a teenager in a touring choir and everyone was so nice! People also posed in our group photos and took selfies with people with blonde hair! Very cool to visit and I can't wait to go back!
When I was in Beijing I felt everyone was very friendly and curious. When we went to the Great Wall a lot of Chinese people from outside the city were even more curious. I had my picture taken by many dozen people on the sly by selfie sticks (I'm almost 2 meters tall). I waved at them and told them to stand next to me and take a real picture with me. It was truly wonderful to meet the people even though we couldn't speak to each other. I got a very good impression of the people I met. I hope they also got a good impression of tall white Americans. I would definitely enjoy seeing more of China and the rest of East Asia. 👍
I do agree with many of their opinions but it would also be great to hear some perspective from foreigners living in other parts of China, cause Shanghai is like an expat haven and much different from and more international than anywhere else in the country.
Shanghai actually has at least 13 million migrant workers from all over China. Living there is a very Chinese experience, though expats who don't know it well will always make the generalization you're making.
the idea that every chinese will learn in primary schoold is to treat your guests with your warm, kind heart and share what you think is the best with them.

In my experience, its usually older Chinese who hold prejudices (and some young people too). The world was a very different place a few decades ago and this (for better or worse) influenced how certain groups treat(ed)/respond(ed) to other groups. I really believe that with the internet and the world becoming more connected, things will improve... just not fast enough 😂

I live in China and have been for almost 3 years. I’m American so people tend to assume that all Americans are loud and outgoing (which isn’t the case for me since I would consider myself an introvert). A few tips that I have for first-timers traveling to China: bring toilet paper everywhere you go(public toilets don’t have toilet paper), if you have a nice pair of shoes they may get ruined so don’t flex on all your good shoes there (a huge population of people also means the ground can get quite dirty) , and lastly learn some chinese since not everybody can speak English
As a student in China I agree with the man talking about food it is actually very different so it's quite difficult to get used to it, and also with the Italia since sometimes some people will stop you in the streets and ask some weird questions 🤔🤔🤔

Been living in China for 15 years can’t wait for the pandemic is over so I can return to Guangzhou, life in China is pretty good but that girl was very right about visa , sometimes they treat people who wants to renew their visa really badly and you never know if you will need more documents or if you will even get the visa or not so that’s the worst thing about China my opinion, hopefully one day they will make visa easier because a lot of people go to China just to live a better life

I lived in China for 2 months and it was a life-changing, eye-opening positive experience. In my opinion, you can never truly understand a country and its people until you have lived and study within it. Highly recommend visiting all the major cities, historical sites and the sublime mountainous regions!

Totally agree with you! I lived in China for 15 years and loved every moment while I was there. The only downside is that the govt throws you out once you reach sixty unless you are an BIG investor, academic from a famous Tier 1 Western university or have some exceptional skills which China badly wants (for example a software or AI engineer). Marrying a local will not necessairly save you lol!. The people though are real friendly!
I spent a year and 5 months in Beihai, China. I was totally amazed with the country and the people. What I had always thought about China, totally opposite of that. The people are helpful and they really try to make you feel at home and work hard to try and communicate with you. I fell in love with my wife there and the people. I wouldn't mind living there forever. China is an incredible place to live and learn.
And USA, wanna throw bombs to China and conquer China... :(
Beihai is such a small village or it was when I was visiting there in 2009, how beautiful the sea is so clear and the sand is pure white a nice small place, I had a hotel room very close to the water, I will never forget my friend that traveled many hours by train just to meet me there, oh what fun we had I remember her and her many kindnesses.

I visited China 15 years ago and paid a visit to The wall at Badaling which was wonderful , I pushed myself a little bit too much on the many steps and being a COPD sufferer I had to sit down in the middle of the climb and I was immediately surrounded by Chinese people offering all kinds of help and expressions of sympathy for my plight ( I was truly gasping for air ) they were just wonderful
to me , I feel that in most of North America I would have been treated as if I were drunk and stepped around, I am now 80 but still love China and its people.
China has changed a lot after for every aspect. You would better come again.

I visited China last year solo, as a tourist. Am Indian, female, late 20s. Honestly, everything was so unexpected. I had been warned about the taciturn nature of the Chinese but they were the warmest people I have ever come across. They give you plenty of space but the when you need help they go out of their way to help you out. Highly impressed by the infrastructure too. Coming from a highly populated country, I can completely understand and empathize with the problems. Yes there were some experiences that were perhaps not so pleasant but on the whole a beautiful and somewhat misunderstood country. Would go again if I get a chance. Would encourage everyone to go. Leave your phone, google maps won't work. Ask people for help, you'll make friends. The only complaints I heard were from some young tourists visiting from more "developed" western nations but honestly if you want every country to be like your own, why travel?
And Shanghai is great, the food, the people, the views from the Bund. Lovely. IMO.

my dad's been to china twice now and he told us how pleasantly surprised he was by the way the locals were so friendly and welcoming eventhough he's an indian. i think its important to personally visit the particular place to debunk those stereotypes which we have in our minds regarding that place. once i grow older and becom self dependent, i would totally visit china! love from india❤

I wish they would have been able to ask a black-skinned person. My experience visiting China (Beijing, Harbin) was made of a lot of staring and pointing fingers at me. I overcame it by smiling to people and willingly taking pictures with them, and it didn't discourage me from going back. Because I really want to understand and enjoy the culture (not everybody is like that). When people were engaging with me, they were the nicest and they shared the yummiest of traditional Chinese food. I can't wait to visit again!

Pointing fingers always existed when foreigners were present in public because the ethnicities/races in China are not as diverse as other places, so local people might feel curious about foreigners and point at them though this action may be considered as “impolite”. But I still feel sorry about that if you did not had a good feeling with the painting fingers.

I am a foreigner currently living in China, but not in the big known cities. I must say that the people here are very friendly, and will definitely help you if needed. I find living in China convenient, with wechat and alipay and all that. Learning and speaking their language will actually make your life ten times easier, even just the basics. With VPN, I think it's not entirely a problem. The censorship can be annoying, but you can still access almost everything, I don't see much difference. It can be a personal preference, so I agree that you should visit first before deciding to live here. Overall, I think China is a good country. They have a phrase that goes "入乡随俗" meaning "When in Rome, do it like how the Romans do", when you follow such value, you won't have any problem living here.

4. Respect and learn Chinese culture because it is very helpful for you to live and work

I was born in China but raised in the US. I’ve been back a few times, it’s quite a fascinating culture. I enjoyed my experiences in China very much!! It’s funny when I would order food, my waiter/waitress or cashier expected mandarin to come out, but instead English did. It surprised quite a few people!! I would encourage anyone to travel to China, at least once in their life!

I visited China a year ago for few weeks and I had nothing but good experiences in the country. I think majority of Chinese people are really sweet, kind and welcoming. A good example of this kidness was when I was flying back home from China; my connecting flight at Shenzhen got delayed by a day so I had to spend a day all alone in a completely new city with my very broken Chinese. Even then, all the other passengers tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible and help me out in every way they could even when we didn't really have a way to communicate with each other.
I personally believe that if you are kind, polite and open to new cultures you will enjoy China a lot. Of course, just like in every other country, you may meet people who may view you rather negatively and may be rude towards you but just try to not care about them too much and concentrate more on the amazing people, because there is for sure more people like them!

I’m basing this off personal experience and the experience of a couple of friends, but Chinese people are usually very filled with hospitality. If you speak Chinese and immerse yourself with the people, often times you’ll realize that they come to accept you as part of the group. While as a lot of friends who I️ know who have lived in Japan had always struggled with acceptance despite living there for many years amongst the people and speaking fluent Japanese. Perhaps it’s just an etiquette thing, Chinese people may come off as too straight forward or maybe even rude in some cases, but at the end of the day it’s because of those reasons that they’re easy to get close with, they are very open and accepting, especially to those who understand their culture. If you do something wrong or not acceptable in their society, they’re not afraid to tell you s that you make sure not to do it next time, but they make sure it’s in an amiable way. They also love to learn your culture and ask a LOT of questions about life outside of China. While as in japan the people are very reserved and less likely to actually speak what’s on their mind. While as they are very polite and respectful, you’ll always have a feeling of isolation and alienation because they don’t really see you as “part of the group” no matter how connected with Japan you are. Sometimes they may even say bad things behind your back despite acting very sweet in front of your face, but this all has to do with local etiquette. The Japanese are taught to never come off as very strong minded and opinionated, while as in China they are taught to be accepting but open and firm about what they believe in. This is just speaking from a general stand point though, obviously others may of had different experiences in both countries but this is my personal experience and that of those who I️ know have lived in one or both of the countries

I think the original poster's point was what you just said. He said you may be alienated in Japan b/c of your foreign-ness and you basically said the same thing to agree with him. If a culture cannot accept a person b/c they use "weird Japanese phonics" I feel very bad for the people they reject. In the U.S, it is very rude not to accept someone just because they use "weird phonics" but I guess it also depends on person to person. Everything is very generalized though. I find Japanese people super polite personally.
I kind of gave this a thought at one point or another but you said it very well. I think you're generally correct with the statements. Japanese people are definitely super polite. As how they will accept a foreigner? I've always heard that integrating was difficult for foreigners. Chinese people on the other hand seem blunt. They'll tell you straight to your face if you look weird or smell or whatever. On the flip side, you can feel more at home in that sense b/c you know there isn't really hard feelings it's just people speaking their head and people with their hearts on their sleeves. I do get the sense too that they accept you as one of them given enough time. You opened my head there : ) that's such an interesting point.

I’m an American born Chinese, and when I went to China it was really nice. I felt rlly at home even though I grew up in America for 15 years, and it was awesome being the majority. I never got special treatment like whites and blacks do in China, as I looked like a local, but I guess I fit the role too well. A few college aged white dudes who are definitely from America went up to me in the middle of a restaurant and were somehow surprised that there was a Chinese teen in a restaurant. They tried speaking Chinese and gave me a fist bump, never told them I spoke English and I heard them talking about how cool it was to meet me a local. Overall 10/10 definitely would do again.
I have been in China for many years and have mostly had good experiences. I wanted a life of adventure and this place has provided that. Many things happen quickly here.
As a Italian Chinese, I lived in Shanghai for one year, it was probably the best time in my life, a lot of fun, new friends from everywhere around the word, living there you can really understand the word “citizen of the world”.

I was living in shenzhen for 2 years I am an Indian and Chinese people are very friendly and they are very helpful and I had a lot of Chinese frnds and they use to invite me in Indian restaurants also and one time my wallet got pick pocket in the market and a local Chinese actually helped me to drop me in my room with the taxi fare and the next day when I invited her in my home she came I offered them to have lunch they did but when I offered her the taxi fare she refused and told me india china frnds and neighbours with a smile so yes i have lived in a lot of countries but Chinese are very down to earth nice and frndly people

I am Italian too and to be honest I had a great impression on China before coming. After moving there it even improved.
China is a great country with great people (especially mainlanders), unfairly object of racist stereotypes.
For sure nothing and no one is perfect, they have their flaws too, but in general they are very friendly and curious about different cultures. Plus, if you speak even a little Chinese they all will be sooooo pleased. Another thing that I like is that Chinese always try to take you out and offer meal and refuse to make you pay...well, that's not always true in Shanghai or outside mainland China, but the rest of mainlanders do it :-P
Plus, Mandarin is such a beautiful, musical language.
I repeat it, nobody's perfect, but China is a great place with great people.

I find it odd that people's impression about china often lay on two extremes. There are many tourists, like you, who shared nice stories about travelling to China. However, there are also many others who complained about how Chinese mainlands are a bunch of materialistic, rude, manipulative and evil backstabbers. Next month I will be travelling there and meet some Chinese mainlands whom I befriended while I'm studying in Singapore. Such contrasting views that youtubers have against China does concern me in some ways.
I have been coming to China for many years to work in the shoe industry and have considered moving there many times. I love the counry, the culture, the vibe, the food.... but this video is sooo recognizable: the worries about visa which get more difficult to obtain all the time and the worries about the current direction of politics are keeping me from making the step.
Even though there are political conflicts between my country and China, the people I met in China treated me unexpectedly nice! What surprised me the most was the fact that they willingly wanted to learn more about my country's culture! I've been to a lot of cities in different China's provinces for travelings, language and culture studies; I can conclude from my past and current experiences that China is worth visiting.
Rule of thumb boys and girls: Don't comment on a foreign country's politics unless you're specifically asked about it. Even then, refrain from criticizing.
Recently just came back from China where I visited Nanjing, Suzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, and Beijing. It was absolutely beautiful and amazing and as a teenager visiting by myself in a foreign country, it was very safe and everyone was super nice to me. So I would definitely would go back.

All of my travels in China were by long distance bus and or trains for two years, I never felt uncomfortable anywhere I took vacation from my work and traveled to different places in China I found China to be a wonderful country with very kind people.

Shanghai is already the most international city in China, like a bubble for foreigners, so if you are planning to visit other places, be prepared for the culture shock.
I would've liked if they had interviewed more Asian foreigners there rather than the usual visible foreigners (non-Asian looking).
The irony being that Asian foreigners I have met generally want more recognition and to stand out more in public, while the visible Foreigners (White, Black, etc...) wish they could just blend in and go along with their day without 1298132 people pointing to them and saying 'laowai!' or doing antisocial retarded things (just because they are visible foreigners) every single day. I wish we could switch side with my fellow Asian foreigners.

I lived in China for 2 months this past summer! Besides getting sick very often and the air pollution, it was absolutely and adventure to me. Even though I got homesick at the end, I definitely find myself missing Asia already and I really can't wait to go back again. It's just such a looooong history and so much you can discover and I'd love to discover more someday! I also rarely got any kind of discrimination, if anything I kept getting compliments and I feel like people approached me a lot more there than I've been in America.
How did you get sick?
Euan Ross basically I love the food, but like the guy said in the video, the quality of the food really messed me up. Especially anything dairy I had to stop eating. I probably got sick about 3 times from that and then the air pollution made me have a cough the whole second month I was there.

I haven't been to Tianjin! I went to Beijing, Jinan, Qufu, and Qingdao. If you want some advice, I recommend bringing some imodium, probiotics, vitamin C with you. If you even actually catch something, drink lots and lots of bottled water and drink it with pedialyte if you can, and also try to see if you can bring the "Cipro" antibiotic with you!

could have been some rude local people. The fashion of not asking income doesn't appear until recent years in China and there were always rumor(could be true) that dark-skin people has longer "thing". And some of chinese males, especially in rural areas usually consider themselves "friend" once they chat a few word with a stranger and ask vague questions.

I'm so glad Asian Boss posted this. I went to China, specifically in Hangzhou and I am very happy I got the chance to stay there for 1 week. It's not what I expected. The city is clean, safe, and the subway is superb. I am so surprised that they don't use cash anymore, they just use their phone to buy something or even paying for the train. I'm from Philippines, I have a tan skin and when we went to Nanjing with my friends, people in the subway are staring at us, we just realized later that we're the only foreigners inside the train or i don't know, it is so weird. I want to go back again and work as an English teacher but I read a lot of blogs about teaching English in China, they prioritize whites, umm yeah white people from the WEST. No matter how good you speak English, have license in teaching, have a bachelor's degree and master's degree, they will only pay you less and prefer the whites, which I think is unfair. But that's how the mentality work. so okay i still want to work in China, it's a wonderful country.
Sorry to hear that. That is also some kind of stereotype. But i think you can try, it should quite a lot of opportunities to be a English teacher in China.
When I was in China for teaching English many many people wanted to take pictures with me because I lived in a comparable 'small' city. They were not used to see foreigners. When I went to a club or bar I had no problems to go inside and find a group which I could join without paying for anything. Even if I wanted to pay they won't let me lol. They were just happy to make contact with a foreigner and take pictures xD it may sound a bit odd but well.. its understandable.. and most of them are actually very nice to you and you can make many friends haha it was a fun time. i miss it

More and more schools and especially kindergardens want to hire foreign teacher. Usually thats really difficult for them to find native speaker with linguistic education. And also they often like to pay less for non-native speaker.
So everyone with level upper intermediate has chance.
But situation is not so easy as before. Especially with visa

visited china couple weeks ago and i think chinese people are very welcoming. but english speaking people are kinda hard to find but thats fine because even tho they cant speak english, they are still giving their best effort to help us as tourists. definitely going to go back soon!
As a foreign med student in china, best things I find are Alipay and just general safety. Also only some old people are prejudice(although the elderly patients are quite friendly). Younger chinese people are pretty cool with things
I’m American and am moving to Shanghai to teach English soon. I used to do this in Thailand so I think I have a bit of prerequisite, but I also know it will be very different. I am super excited!

I spent 3 weeks in China in 2012 and traveled around the North-Central region. I had a wonderful time and have many fond memories of the people there.
Of all the places I visited, I enjoyed the city of Xining the most with it's interesting architecture, great food, and blend of minority groups.
I did end up getting sick in Beijing because of the air, but once I got out of the city center my symptoms went away.
China is beautiful.. I had my first solo travel there last 2019 and i was amazed with the country. People are warm and there is so much to see. I wish to live there at least a year to see and experience more of China. My perception really changed because of that experience.

I used to live in China for one year. It was such a nice experience. I was living in Shanghai and travelled around the country. Best period of my life. The only thing that kind of bothers me a bit but also make me laugh sometimes is the fact that people would assume that I love coconut, banana, and mango because I am black... and that I can dance like Beyonce (that I don't). lmao

Recently visited china with my bf; he is from Beijing so I was able to see many places and experience daily life. I really enjoyed it. It is a beautiful country. The people are welcoming. Only thing that was hard for me to get used to was that people were always looking and pointing at me lol. But they mainly do that because they are curious about you. I’ll be going back in February for the Spring Festival and to spend more time with his family. Definitely think about visiting china; you’ll have a great experience.

I'm Filipino American but when I was in a half day stop in Guangzhou most of the Chinese mistakenly thought I spoke Mandarin. So I felt bad when I had to respond back in English on China South airlines, at the airport, and at the store. There were scammers at the airport who wanted to give expensive taxi rides, but other retailers and hotel staff were great and helpful. There was just a large communication barrier. If I ever go back to China, I will try to make more of an effort to speak Chinese, even brokenly.
Don't think that matters. Appearance is always something people judge the first from, and as long as they don't discriminate you for it, that's fine. When it comes to learning Chinese, unless you plan to move to China or do business with Chinese people, it's totally optional.
I had the opportunity to stay in the People's Republic of China, I simply fell in love with that country❤️
I went to China as a teenager in a touring choir and everyone was so nice! People also posed in our group photos and took selfies with people with blonde hair! Very cool to visit and I can't wait to go back!

When I was in Beijing I felt everyone was very friendly and curious. When we went to the Great Wall a lot of Chinese people from outside the city were even more curious. I had my picture taken by many dozen people on the sly by selfie sticks (I'm almost 2 meters tall). I waved at them and told them to stand next to me and take a real picture with me. It was truly wonderful to meet the people even though we couldn't speak to each other. I got a very good impression of the people I met. I hope they also got a good impression of tall white Americans. I would definitely enjoy seeing more of China and the rest of East Asia. 👍
I do agree with many of their opinions but it would also be great to hear some perspective from foreigners living in other parts of China, cause Shanghai is like an expat haven and much different from and more international than anywhere else in the country.
Shanghai actually has at least 13 million migrant workers from all over China. Living there is a very Chinese experience, though expats who don't know it well will always make the generalization you're making.

In my experience, its usually older Chinese who hold prejudices (and some young people too). The world was a very different place a few decades ago and this (for better or worse) influenced how certain groups treat(ed)/respond(ed) to other groups. I really believe that with the internet and the world becoming more connected, things will improve... just not fast enough 😂

I live in China and have been for almost 3 years. I’m American so people tend to assume that all Americans are loud and outgoing (which isn’t the case for me since I would consider myself an introvert).
A few tips that I have for first-timers traveling to China: bring toilet paper everywhere you go(public toilets don’t have toilet paper), if you have a nice pair of shoes they may get ruined so don’t flex on all your good shoes there (a huge population of people also means the ground can get quite dirty) , and lastly learn some chinese since not everybody can speak English

Been living in China for 15 years can’t wait for the pandemic is over so I can return to Guangzhou, life in China is pretty good but that girl was very right about visa , sometimes they treat people who wants to renew their visa really badly and you never know if you will need more documents or if you will even get the visa or not so that’s the worst thing about China my opinion, hopefully one day they will make visa easier because a lot of people go to China just to live a better life
