I am an Indian, about a decade ago under chaotic circumstances I traveled/lived in about a dozen Asian countries, one of them being China for 3 months of my stay changed my views. People are friendly, and hardworking here. In fact, I faced the least troubles from the locals out of the dozen countries I traveled to and lived in. And I wish India and China get together like brothers as two of the oldest civilizations on this planet. Thank you very much.

My husband and I traveled China some time agosto, we were in Forbidden City when a kid asked our tour guide if he could take a pucture with me and all Kids made a líne for pictures. All people were really friendly and help full. Liked a lot in Garden of Heaven to see people playing and even invited us to learn and play with them, it was really fun.
I’ve been a month in China in 2007, traveled from Beijing to Hong-Kong over the west side of the country. It was the most wonderful trip I made in my life. Very friendly people, the food is the most delicious food in the world. After that trip I always said: if there is a opportunity to stay ther, I will take it

@@small_fries7573 when I lived in Hawaii for three years when my ex-husband was in the US Marine Corps, I worked out in town amongst Polynesians and Filipinos, Chinese, and Korean and they were slow to get close to people, but if they accepted you, you were like family! They are some pretty amazing people and I was so glad to be there and work amongst other people who were at hard-working in dedicated as me. I’ve always taken my work seriously whether I was in school or work, and some Americans have a lazy streak, which is some thing the Orientals the Chinese don’t have.

@mrsfmilitary9356 Nothing wrong with it. China has freedom and democracy. They simply view and practice it differently than how Americans do it. It's the same with religions, Christianity and Islam preach the same goal, but go about it in different ways. Essentially, America's way of doing things is just one way of doing it. It doesn't mean they don't believe it at all. They should respect the fact that other countries do things differently.
We' ve been on a trip during six weeks in China ( from Beijing to Hong Kong) and I must say I've met the most friedly people in the world, quite normal working people, everything was very good organised and the people very helpful. It was one of the most interesting and amazing trips in my life. 😊 China is far developed, amazing cities like Shanghai or Hangzhou....I can say only WOW ! Extraordinary !
Being a Chinese lived in US for more than 30 years, I used to go back to China every year before 2020. China under Xi had tighten up the control on media a lot, many people do not like it. I'm from rural area in China , I saw the living standard improved greatly in my hometown. Yes, there still were a lot of pollution here or there, but corruption has improved a lot in recent years, that is why Xi can hold on to his power. You mentioned that in recent years Chinese attitude towards foreigners had changed a lot, I can understand that, since I had experienced the same in USA, the media here tune up the China bashing a lot. At least Chinese media never stirred up the hatred toward US citizens there. After living here for 30+ years, the biggest difference between the two society is that in Chinese local government need to meet their performance goal just like in cooperation, but local government here only care about their own re-election.

It's worse than China. US govt creates disinformation, stirup discrimination against other groups, and minorities, never report the truth about other countries that they don't like, always report negatives news.
I live in America, but come from Eastern Europe (Macedonia). I like the Chinese people, they're very smart, educated, and hard working. I can't say I really like the Chinese government, although they have done goods things like get many people out of poverty. The real problem for me is Communism. I don't like Communism at all, I feel it is one of the worst forms of government. Mao Zedong was responsible for the deaths of millions (60+ million) of Chinese people, the most deaths in all of history and I still see his picture in China and I don't understand why the Chinese people still hang pictures of this man. This is not something to be proud of. Also, there is a new China Credit Score where each citizen has a score based on how loyal they are to the government, and those that have a low score will have major consequences. That's not good. Anyway, the important thing is that to the USA, the real threat is not China, the real threat is within because there is growing Communism inside the USA, namely from the Democrat party. Censorship is growing here, and if you say the wrong things, you can even lose your job. The US media is wrong to label China as a threat, so I ignore the media about that and about many other things.

I think China will continue to grow and improve. The small issues I have with it aren't really a big deal and I enjoy living here. I think people don't always get an honest report and I stand by my opinions. Again, it is just an opinion, so it can't really be wrong.
I spent time in China months at a time. I agree with all said. I found China safe and people seemed pretty happy. China does take good care of their people from all I saw and heard when asked how things were there for people.

So, Chinese people protest and want their money back. But every time they want to withdraw their money, nothing comes out. There are a lot of high apartments that are empty.

53 years ago I had the opportunity to backpack across China. Starting in Hong Kong ending up at the Russian border in the north east. Spend 3 mouths backpacking. I had the greatest time of my life. The people where so friendly. Food I loved. Everyone helped. Like you I learned so mush and was so different then what was in my head before I get there. I loved it .

Love Chinese period dramas. My wife and I watch them a lot. I may be kidding myself but I think it helps me better understand Chinese culture. I was blown away by the size of Beijing as well as how modern it was when we visited there. Transportation and infrastructure were amazing. I have never felt as safe in any country. I was treated with kindness and generosity. I hope to return soon.
Watching Hollywood TV/movies won't give you an accurate representation of what life's like for the actual average American, but it does give you excellent insight into American/Western society and culture, for sure. In that respect Chinese period pieces are about as accurate as any other period pieces, given any other culture is only ever going to show themselves in an idealized fashion (and every other culture in a "gritty, realistic" aka pessimistic fashion, in comparison).

This is Western News. You're on a US-Based 'Western' media platform right now. In 2010 there were hundreds of videos of foreigners in China raving all kinds of positive things. At that time, a good amount of 'Western Media' was about China being the 'Rising Giant' and 'Economic Miracle' and a lot of post-Olympics hype about how far China had come and was opening up.
Basically he said China is not as bad as it seems from western media, but it is still bad place to be. Not only you can't speak about the govt, you basically self censored to avoid trouble, that's a huge concern to people who enjoyed freedom and say just about anything. Also that means you miss a lot of news what's happening in China, so you have to rely on western media to learn what is going on within China.

it is fair to point out those problems you have encountered in China. 1.4 billions population is a vast number to steer in right direction to please everyone in China, not to mention to please a foreigner who came from a totally different culture/society.. I absolutely love, respect and impressed by China and what the govt has done to transform the country from a "once" a iron curtain country to a world power in less than 30+ years. China is beautiful. I've been living in Guangzhou for nearly 24 years. My brother in law is a bus driver (a great bloke who will do anything for me) who is earning the UK equivalent of about 700 pounds a month. He lives on what we call a council estate in the UK, but here it's Government supported housing. he has 3 bedrooms, a small kitchen, a living/dining room, one toilet/shower room and a small balcony. It's in the north of the city but it's linked by 2 subway lines and many bus routes. He lives in a private secured compound with shopping centres, restaurants and schools all around. The restaurants are amazing! There is no litter and no crime. The schools are pristine with loads of facilities including running tracks, astro football pitches and basketball courts etc..... His son has access to free education until he is at least 18.

Local businesses have taken over all the former Western companies (i.e. Starbucks-Stars Coffee) the gdp ppp has grown to 5th in the world (check IMF and World Bank) investment in local industries and development has risen thanks to the oligarchy money now being limited to staying inside Russia instead of being ported to the EU. Whatever your opinion on the war might be, Russia's economic growth and well-being is doing the best it has in over a decade. Not even the propaganda media can hide it.

Thank you! Please keeping posting videos like this! Short of visiting or living in other countries, this is the best way for me to learn. I watch different people's videos on China, try to take in as many different views and opinions as possible and make up my own mind as much as possible from that. Learning from people like you actually made me read books about Chinese history, politics and culture. I find this source of information more important than news. With everything one needs to apply critical thinking and consider the right to different opinions and mentalities that are based on where (and when, because countries change as you pointed out too) you were born and raised. So not everybody might come to the same conclusions. However if we only listend to the media driven narratives, we are at risk to become slaves to one sided and often false realities. Being open, listening and a willingness to learn and change is so important. I respect you for living this! Sidenote: I love the background in your video. I hope you are enjoying your new place. I must say that this is one of the most unbiased video about China. As a Foreigner living in China for 14 years, I can see the difference and extreme narrative both from China and west point of view. But....sometimes the people and government are two different entities and not a representative of a country.

I've been living in China for several years and have just about the same experiences and opinion as you " Trip Bitten " . The Chinese People are happy , well treated by employers and the Government. People in the US are so misinformed , or should I say purposely misinformed. I find trying to convince old " US " friends of this is almost impossible , so much so I rarely even try anymore. I'm not saying that they're good, but there has to be a reason why no one challenged them. Over the years, I quickly saw different perspectives of China and why they do things, what's their mentality like? I see why things are like this with China and how their society generally works. Things like the Uyghurs stuff for example, made no sense to me, and why I emplore people to really research over democratic bias. I try to tell my gf about China and she calls me a brainwashed sinophile, saying she knows more than me because she's from the neighboring country and I was born in the US, even if my blood is from there. She doesn't believe anything I say. China has its downsides but has a lot of upsides too. Hence why they're no. 2 compared to any other country.
I also find it saddening and disappointing that that hate slowly started to seep into hate for the culture and hate towards the people. Not everyone is like this, obviously, but i do feel like anti asian hate is growing nowadays. I dont understand why they dont want to travel to another country and have their own experience.

I am Chinese and work in Ireland for so many years. I was verbally attacked by other nationalities during COVID. Also I knew some Chinese were actually physically attacked by locals. So Chinese people in China need to see what happened to other Chinese abroad. it’s not anti foreigner in China. I think most Chinese people are just angry about that.

I also like to see the beautiful Tibet back to 2007 but was told without a (personal) guide I, as a foreigner, was not allowed to go to Lhasa. Lots of beautiful sites are not available for foreign tourist.

A lot of your thoughts and opinions were very similar to our reactions to living in China. A Chinese friend of ours said, "In China, there is no democracy, but there is a lot of freedom." There is quite a lot of truth in this saying.

@@TripBitten I lived in Spain for four years and when I talked to Spanish people in a public space, they hardly said anything politically sensitive. If they did, they would look around unconsciously, which called my attention. They told me it was better not to reveal one´s political preference to avoid troubles. That made me believe that in "democratic countries" there were invisible censorships too.
Back 20yrs ago i myself.... Everythings china made are cheap but they are all rubbish. Now.... I rather buy cheap china made products then japan made such ask house electrical appliances. Thoughout these years, my previous tv ,aircond (panasonic, toshiba, sony,Lg,mitsubishi) died soon after their warranty period expired . Now i am using china made xiami tv and other china made which is cheaper than japan/korea brand appliances... The china brand products nowaday are more lasting and durable than others. Btw i am malaysian and i support china made products all day long.
Chinese Tech has improved a lot in the last 20 years. Like I said, we used to think Chinese products were low quality, but now it is really hard to make that statement. The tech coming out of China is on par or better in many areas.
My Chinese fridge is now 18 years old. It needs updating but it is still functional. My Chinese coffee grinder is every bit as well engineered as an Italian one and was only 10% of the price.

What impressed me most while visiting China was the care and love the government has for the older community! They take care of the elderly very well. Unlike the west where the elderly are disposed like garbage. The education system is amazing, the children are the future of the country and the government spends millions on the best technologies available. The food is amazing specially if you are a vegan or vegetarian, they have 100ths of years of experience putting a plate together. I wish I could live there one day.
Really? I am from China. There is no subsidy for the elderly in rural areas, no pension (100 yuan a year is equivalent to nothing) and no medical insurance. The elderly in rural areas only rely on their children and dare not get sick. If they get sick, the whole family may be brought down.

I agree with our views on both China and the US having visited them both for work. What was really impressive to me were two visits to a shipyard with a year span between them. First I saw workers traveling to the yard 3 to 4 on a single (electrical) moped. A year later most traveled on their own moped.
I don't think the government is having restrictions targeting foreigners since covid, it's just restriction from anyone from outside of China, including Chinese people like me, I haven't been able to go back to China for a few years now, Of course technically I can do it, just cost a lot of money and time of confinement and troubles. And I understand and support China~s policy to protect people's life! But of course I would love China to re-open soon, too. Just wanna say China's policy is not targeting foreigners, Chinese people suffer not less than you foreigners. It's all for one purpose: to protect life from covid.

Chinese people have almost no regard for human life and absolutely zero regard for animal life. There are literally thousands upon thousands of videos on the Internet that display China's lack of concern and respect for human life. The amount of videos from China that show people being chewed up by escalators is unreal. That stuff literally NEVER happens in the West because in the West we actually do value human life so we have very strict regulations for health and safety and build quality so people don't get hurt or killed. And that's just one example. Elevators seem to be quite unsafe in China too - there are plenty of videos showing Chinese people getting crushed by elevators due to the lack of safety failsafes like the ones we have in the West. Then there's the blatant disregard for human life that the average Chinese person displays... again, there are literally THOUSANDS of videos that show Chinese people just completely ignoring people who are severely injured, despite their pleas for help. If you are lying on the street dying in China, NOBODY will help you. It's genuinely disturbing. I've seen videos of children getting ran over in China and instead of helping them, everyone just completely ignores them and leaves them lying there in the middle of the street, nobody ever even stops to call an ambulance. But of course that's the way it is in China, after all they live under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party - an organisation that has proved how little it cares for human lives time and time again. From killing 45 MILLION people during the so-called "great leap forward" to burying train crash survivors ALIVE in order to cover-up the fact that a train crash had happened so as not to lose face in front of the international community. There are many, many more examples I can give but there are far more acts of cruelty and callousness committed by the CCP that we will never know about because the CCP cover everything up and censor everything. We only know about that train crash for example because a Western journalist managed to secretly film the CCP demolishing and burying the wreckage of the train (with survivors still alive in inside). Who knows what other sordid, evil and downright sadistic things the Chinese Communist Party has committed. Even on small scales like assassinating that doctor who alerted everyone to COVID while the Chinese Government was trying very hard to cover it up, the CCP will kill anyone who gets in their way and are ready and willing to sacrifice millions of Chinese people at a moments notice. Saying that "life comes first in China" is incredibly disrespectful to the literal TENS OF MILLIONS of people who have died either directly at the hands of the CCP or as a result of the coldness and callousness the CCP has baked into Chinese culture and society. And I haven't even gotten to the rampant animal cruelty and abuse that goes on in China. It's simply horrific. China shows almost no respect for human life but they show absolutely ZERO respect for animal life. From torturing dogs to death just to "make the meat more tender" to hunting entire species to near extinction just to use their body parts in Chinese traditional medicine. It's absolutely disgusting. But I am not surprised. China is a country where the government runs students over with tanks just for protesting, so of course they don't have any respect for the lives of animals. However, whenever I talk to others or argue online, I tend to come off as more pro-China, because nuance is dead and there are too many negative things on the Western side of the internet already.
The problem is if you say anything balanced or nice about China, people think you are pro-China. Nuance is dead, because that would require real thought and not just re-telling your teams (parties) lines. People don't want to accept that there is good and bad in every country....

do you realise that China's incarceration number 1.6million is out 1.4 billion, and the US' 2.06 million incarceration number is out of 332,403,650, China does not have a higher incarceration rage as you said. Brazil has a population of 216,008,291, the incarceration rate is higher. Russia's population is 146,077,237 Thailand's population is 70,199,178, so forth and so on.
It's not about the number it's also about the way the law is handed. Since China doesn't have rule of law (it has rule by law), this is a justified worry.

Basically he said China is not as bad as it seems from western media, but it is still bad place to be. Not only you can't speak about the govt, you basically self censored to avoid trouble, that's a huge concern to people who enjoyed freedom and say just about anything. Also that means you miss a lot of news what's happening in China, so you have to rely on western media to learn what is going on within China.

I visited China twice, in 2012 and 2015, the first time with my daughter, the next time as a solo traveller and I enjoyed every moment. The people were open and friendly, I sang La Traviata with a Chinese military man on a bus travelling to the Vietnamese border and felt welcome everywhere I went. The country is diverse, beautiful and full of wonders. High-tech often meets tradition, and the singing and dancing in the early morning or after sunset encourages people to join in. The food is delicious ! I would love to travel to China again soon, there is still so much to see. Europe often doesn't feel as safe and easy for solo travellers, and it doesn't shine with the same cleanliness!
I think most people view China as it was say 30 plus years ago. I myself had this view prior to going, but that's because its a picture still being presented by western media. Once you visit China, you realize that in many areas China and Asia is more advanced than the West. The irony is many journalists writing about China and Asia on the whole have either never visited or was only in China/Asia for short period. One misnomer is that Chinese people have no freedom yet they have a lot of rights and freedom.
U need to give "2013" some credit for work done on air pollution, double the high-speed rail miles, subway, people's income increases, etc., as most of these things u mentioned happened during the " 2013" period.

I used to think it was a big dangerous corrupt police state - because that was what I had been fed by western media throughout my whole life. It's actually quite the opposite, and living in Shanghai I feel 10 times safer than living in London.

As a Canadian, it always confused me about the American educational system. The students knew everything about the United States but so little about the rest of the world..including Canada. And it was made clear, they just didn't care. Thanks for the educational videos!
Yes, they teach us a highly skewed and bias version of American history. We all learn about Christopher Columbus “discovering” America, the pilgrims, the original 13 colonies, the revolutionary war, to their credit slavery but very little, the civil war, the Declaration of Independence, Lewis and Clark, manifest destiny, and usually ending with the gold rush and the forming of California. Alaska and Hawaii becoming the 49th and 50th state is just an after thought so that we know what the 50 stars on the flag stand for. But anytime the pillaging of native Americans is mentioned, they call it “a war” because most Americans are blindly patriotic. They definitely won’t teach you anything to make you believe it was a massacre or genocide. We also learn about U.S. geography and memorize the capitols of all 50 states. We do learn about world geography but they just glance over it and don’t really go in depth. Mostly just the 7 continents , all the oceans, and bodies of water. I’m just referring to kindergarten through high school. Oh and we also put our right hand over our heart, face the flag that is hanging in every classroom and say the “Pledge of Allegiance” every morning. Which as a kid I didn’t think too much of it, but as an adult find it a little weird and cult like. Although not perfect, I still believe our free public education system is one of the best in the world.
Truly enlightening. I’m a HKer, but I have worked to ensure I ain’t clouded by what I would call the “HK bubble” when it comes to China. From my experience and observations of China, indeed, the people remains friendly to foreigners and China’s stance on foreign relations is still foreign-friendly, but when it comes to internal policies, especially about COVID control and America in particular, it is indeed criminalising of foreigners, depending on how messages are translated to English or even the choice of words in Chinese. I personally don’t believe the government is trying to do this out of total pure malice, but I can definitely see how their changing policies are heading along a similar line to America’s policies on China. China is heading along a good path to success, but right now, some of their news does make foreigners’ lives in China hard or uncomfortable. Their news isn’t based on false narratives, but the way they utilise the truth is concerning at times. If they continue like this, we would only commit the same mistakes as America. I am confident in China though. Talking to the mainland Chinese here in Canada, the attitude of the people is definitely friendly to foreigners. On the record of the Chinese government’s success in the past, I trust they will eventually note this problem. It’s only a matter of if they’ll recognise it soon enough and respond quick enough. This sounds like a very biased opinion, but I guess this is what my experience has told me🤣ofc, it ain’t gonna be as genuine as someone truly living in China, and is also a foreigner, so I don’t think I have particularly much say on the matter. I agree with you, I don't think it is out of malice or hate, but it can make foreigners feel less welcomed at times (truth be told, I would rather be a foreigner here, than in the US). Again, it is always hard when talking about opinions or feelings, so everything I said should be taken with that in mind. I'm just one guy living here and my views have changed a lot since I have been here. Mostly for the good, like I said in the video.

I do appreciate hearing such opinions like yours anyhow; it’s a reminder that China may not be as shit as the West portrays it, but there are still issues and problems to address. I think so long as we are aware of nuances and the multilayered nature of these social-political discussions, we can really progress forward.
It's not even just China who pushes these anti-foreigner COVID policies, check out the videos made by people living in Japan or South Korea, two major countries heavily influenced by western culture who you'd think would be more tolerant and understanding towards western foreigners yet that's not the case at all.

Chinese product sold in the US was made by Walmart requirement, cheap and break easily. Chiense people do not buy such product. That was made for American. Gucci, Shanel and other high-end product sold most in China. The US is relatively small market for high-priced high-quality products.

Listening to Western Media about China and you would be forgiven for thinking it is a terrible country - until you realize from the word go, it is all totally negative propaganda to generate fear. Even mild mannered western media social stories about China, more often than not , lead first with referrals to Tienanmen, or Xinjiang. How about every time I look at a good social media story about western successes, it began with an introduction of past questionable military adventures - such as ; Vietnam, or Iraq, or Syria, or Chile, or tragic disasters as a consequence of Corporate Greed? Looking to the cause of this negativity eventually the pin drops. It is an ideological and economic war originating from the present dominant Global power. Who controls Britain? Who controls Nato? Who dictates to the EU.? Why are all Western media outlets selling the same story? Who controls the media?
There are tons of censorships in the US! There are many things that the mainstream media can't report and they also ban social media accounts that expose the truth.
Tiannamen was a color revolution which recruited Chinese citizens and took place on Chinese soil (at the heart of the capital actually). The CPC started to take systematic measures against the Xinjiang problem because Uyghur extremists, who were Chinese citizens, attacked other normal non-muslim Chinese citizens, again, on Chinese soil (Kunming railway station). So both internal affairs I would say. Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Chile are not USA. Isn't that interesting.

Simple opinion: A government's priority should always be its own people and domestic policies, not foreigners. I don't agree with your point on state media trying to antagonize foreigners(whether intentional or not). Because at times (especially now) you can't satisfy everybody and in China policy making always leaning towards "protecting the interest of majority". And you just have to live with it. The same as when I studied in the US for many years, I couldn't do things that I regard normal in China, you join the majority and social trend if you want to be socialized and integrated. But a foreigner is a foreigner, and as you said China has changed a lot, I also find it challenging to adapt at first from coming back. This is completely different from the western media's stance which can be total anti-China narratives from top to bottom. You can hear the same news from western media and Chinese media and you get two complete different stories. It is not for its people but for the politicians narratives and big corporates interest. News is just a tool and they don't care whether it's true or not, as long as make people believe it and use it. Yes there same online media in China that only attract views with extreme opinions, but on the goverment level I don't think so. Chinese people do generally have more views and knowledge on the world than people think(you probably have the same view before coming to China too). The fact that Chinese people ARE aware of the world around them and understand them better is unknown to western audience who only learn China from their media. What I would say is that Chinese media is really bad, in "propagada" for international audience. The international audience was never the focus or priority for the state media, not until recent years with CGTN. They are not trying to be like BBC or CNN, just see as another source of getting information. Just like in business, competition is always good for consumers.

I have recently subscribed and am really enjoying your, very informative, videos. I am living in my 5th country (Spain), having originated in Australia 73 years ago. I've lived in all hemispheres and have spent extended time in 27 countries, all told. This may sound unique but having met so many ex-pats from around the world, I realize just how many of us are shaking off our roots and getting out into the world. I love the feeling that comes with experiencing global consciousness and feel sorry for the poor, ignorant people who only know their own, narrow little world and the small-mindedness that comes with it.

I started changing my opinion by still living in US. I never been in China yet, but I'd love to visit and I finally feeling that lots of things were told, - wrong. It is different culture, it is not West culture. It is different and has long history. I'd love to learn about it more. Studying Mandarine for the last month.
1:17 my immediate thought was "Yeah, that's high, but china has a significantly larger population compared to the US so the US must have a rediculously high incarceration rate" and then I saw the next list below, which is the actual top 10 incarceration rates rather than raw population of the incarcerated and China isn't even on there.
Thank you for making this video! U.S. citizen here; the only thing that makes updating my opinion more difficult to do is that it's hard to know what isn't being said (due to the heavy amount of sensorship). Many positive things could be said about China to foreign ears, but until I know that the people who live there are able to voice complaints as well, I'm never going to have a clear idea of how bad things are or are not. I assume everything's normal, but I will never have as much info as I would for other countries. Anyhow, hope all's well! And I hope I can visit there someday.

Fair assessment. Sure, these days, things get more complicated if you're a foreigner, and it makes you wonder if they really want you here. On the other hand, the official line is still that they welcome you, and there is still a lot of stuff to encourage and help foreigners (I did benefit from a lot of that). I think if you have some true competence, it's not a problem. But if you're a low life english teacher with no particular talent, it's not the easy life that it used to be. As for censorship, you learn to live with it, but it's also my opinion that China would have a lot to gain by relaxing a bit on this. One last, and important thing about China: never think that what you see today is what it always has been, and what it will always be. Quite the contrary, the country changes, almost day by day! Maybe it's going one way today, but that might totally reverse tomorrow, or next month, or next year. You certainly know that, having been here for so long. It's just something to keep in mind when you live here. As opposed to, say, Canada where I come from, where things literally NEVER change.
Yes, the censorship isn't that bad just something you feel on a more day to day level. Like you said, things change here very quickly and that means any "problem" I have or perceive could change tomorrow, which makes it more interesting to live here. I do enjoy living here, I would have left a long time ago if I didn't like it here.

It's nice to listen to you talking about things in China from an American perspective (or from a foreigner's viewpoint, for that matter). I'd like to express my opinion about censorship and freedom of speech/expression in China as well as related matters the like of why ordinary Chinese like foreigners but the government seems to make it harder for foreigners to live and work in China, among others. I was among the first or second batch of people (most Chinese from Taiwan and Hong Kong) coming to work in China after the paramount leader Deng Xiaoping opened up China to the outside world in late 1970s. The country at that time was dirt poor and there was no private business. The monthly wage of state-owned enterprise workers was ¥20.00 and there were 2 foreign exchange rates: (1) officially at US$1=¥1 and (2) on black market at US$1=¥10. A can of Coca-Cola cost ¥1.00 and the Forbidden City in Beijing was in a state of disrepair that was heart-breaking. Surprisingly, air pollution was unheard of in 1980's and it only became a pretty serious problem in late 1990's after 2 decades of toiling to churn out consumer goods for the West. The ordinary mainland Chinese were very friendly, especially so to the American technicians in our team. With deep regret, the West gradually turned against China when they saw that China followed its own course of development and didn't become more democratic the way they expected. As with any other country, China has the same problems with dissidents and opposition groups. A simple arithmetic calculation shows that at 1% there will be 14.5 million dissenting voices in the nation. Now, I think you (and everyone else) understand why there is censorship of the internet and restrictions on freedom of speech and expression in China -- especially when the West and their mass media notoriously spread disinformation and hates against the nation (the very things that you admitted of being forced fed prior to your working and living in China). I do hope that you can appreciate things from this perspective and be more lenient in your opinion toward China regarding the freedom that Americans and Europeans took for granted in the so-called "democratic" system of governance that, unfortunately, the Jacks and Jills on the streets are mostly kept from knowing the actions of those who wield real power once elected by you. For the past 40 years, successive Chinese governments have worked very hard to look after the welfare of its people and so the current government under Xi Jinping deserves the full support of over 95% of the Chinese population. The "feel good" sentiment is simply hard to beat, even for me personally at this very moment.

I am a retired doctor in California but I’ve had a number of Chinese colleagues so I get to hear their opinions. I love your comments m, I think it’s a more nuanced view of China, and it is a great nation and a great people. I get tired of the saber rattling in the United States and wish we would cooperate more with China.

Chinese are not saints. When Chinese get hated for no good reason, many of Chinese hate back, it's the natural way of human being deffensive. I'm not saying this is right but it's just human nature. Luckily, there's this "big evil villain" which controls everything in China society, yes the CPC government, and it won't allow extremism to rule its country. For instances, several years ago there was this unsettling anxiety towards foreigners from Africa illegally over staying (when they should leave they don't) in a southern city, and some irrational ppl made extreme hateful statements online and such sentiment spread. It was at that time the Big Evil Villain stepped in, took some measures (A, find and send back illegal staying foreigners; B, crack down the irrational extreme "free speech" online) to stop things from getting out of hands. There are pros and cons living in any country and ppl are just ppl.
I would love to hear more from Chinese living overseas and their opinions. I also think some of the feelings of anti-foreigner in China is because of the news about how Chinese are treated overseas. But it really comes down to media in general and how issues are presented. Overall, my experience has been Chinese people are friendly, but some of the government policies make life harder.

Great insight! Thank you for sharing your oppinion about China. I am not living in China, although been living in Asia in the past 15 years (over 10 in Indonesia, almost 2 in Pakistan and almost 3 in Vietnam) and traveled to China a handfull of times. We cannot forget the "1 chlid policy" where a lot of people would give up their child when they realized it was a girl.
The one child policy is indeed tough and inhumane, and nobody would take that route if there was a better solution for the cold fact that science and reality pointed to. Feeding an exponentially growing population would be impossible according to the statistics back in the late 60's. Yes, there were many broken hearts and tragedies. But the remaining survived and live better. It was a tough decision that nobody wanted to make. Not even the policy makers
I am an Indian, about a decade ago under chaotic circumstances I traveled/lived in about a dozen Asian countries, one of them being China for 3 months of my stay changed my views. People are friendly, and hardworking here. In fact, I faced the least troubles from the locals out of the dozen countries I traveled to and lived in. And I wish India and China get together like brothers as two of the oldest civilizations on this planet. Thank you very much.

My husband and I traveled China some time agosto, we were in Forbidden City when a kid asked our tour guide if he could take a pucture with me and all Kids made a líne for pictures.
All people were really friendly and help full. Liked a lot in Garden of Heaven to see people playing and even invited us to learn and play with them, it was really fun.

@@small_fries7573 when I lived in Hawaii for three years when my ex-husband was in the US Marine Corps, I worked out in town amongst Polynesians and Filipinos, Chinese, and Korean and they were slow to get close to people, but if they accepted you, you were like family! They are some pretty amazing people and I was so glad to be there and work amongst other people who were at hard-working in dedicated as me. I’ve always taken my work seriously whether I was in school or work, and some Americans have a lazy streak, which is some thing the Orientals the Chinese don’t have.

We' ve been on a trip during six weeks in China ( from Beijing to Hong Kong) and I must say I've met the most friedly people in the world, quite normal working people, everything was very good organised and the people very helpful. It was one of the most interesting and amazing trips in my life. 😊 China is far developed, amazing cities like Shanghai or Hangzhou....I can say only WOW ! Extraordinary !
Being a Chinese lived in US for more than 30 years, I used to go back to China every year before 2020. China under Xi had tighten up the control on media a lot, many people do not like it. I'm from rural area in China , I saw the living standard improved greatly in my hometown. Yes, there still were a lot of pollution here or there, but corruption has improved a lot in recent years, that is why Xi can hold on to his power. You mentioned that in recent years Chinese attitude towards foreigners had changed a lot, I can understand that, since I had experienced the same in USA, the media here tune up the China bashing a lot. At least Chinese media never stirred up the hatred toward US citizens there. After living here for 30+ years, the biggest difference between the two society is that in Chinese local government need to meet their performance goal just like in cooperation, but local government here only care about their own re-election.

It's worse than China. I live in America, but come from Eastern Europe (Macedonia). I like the Chinese people, they're very smart, educated, and hard working. I can't say I really like the Chinese government, although they have done goods things like get many people out of poverty. The real problem for me is Communism. I don't like Communism at all, I feel it is one of the worst forms of government. Mao Zedong was responsible for the deaths of millions (60+ million) of Chinese people, the most deaths in all of history and I still see his picture in China and I don't understand why the Chinese people still hang pictures of this man. This is not something to be proud of. Also, there is a new China Credit Score where each citizen has a score based on how loyal they are to the government, and those that have a low score will have major consequences. That's not good. Anyway, the important thing is that to the USA, the real threat is not China, the real threat is within because there is growing Communism inside the USA, namely from the Democrat party. Censorship is growing here, and if you say the wrong things, you can even lose your job. The US media is wrong to label China as a threat, so I ignore the media about that and about many other things.

I think China will continue to grow and improve. The small issues I have with it aren't really a big deal and I enjoy living here. I think people don't always get an honest report and I stand by my opinions. Again, it is just an opinion, so it can't really be wrong.
I spent time in China months at a time. I agree with all said. I found China safe and people seemed pretty happy. China does take good care of their people from all I saw and heard when asked how things were there for people.

53 years ago I had the opportunity to backpack across China. Starting in Hong Kong ending up at the Russian border in the north east. Spend 3 mouths backpacking. I had the greatest time of my life. The people where so friendly. Food I loved. Everyone helped. Like you I learned so mush and was so different then what was in my head before I get there. I loved it .

Love Chinese period dramas. My wife and I watch them a lot. I may be kidding myself but I think it helps me better understand Chinese culture. I was blown away by the size of Beijing as well as how modern it was when we visited there. Transportation and infrastructure were amazing. I have never felt as safe in any country. I was treated with kindness and generosity. I hope to return soon.

Watching Hollywood TV/movies won't give you an accurate representation of what life's like for the actual average American, but it does give you excellent insight into American/Western society and culture, for sure. In that respect Chinese period pieces are about as accurate as any other period pieces, given any other culture is only ever going to show themselves in an idealized fashion (and every other culture in a "gritty, realistic" aka pessimistic fashion, in comparison).

We had over a million people die here of Covid. We also had a friend die in China that was quarantined and couldn’t get medical care in time. It was terrible. Both systems have their problems. My greatest hope is that China and the US learn from and help each other in the future.

I've been living in Guangzhou for nearly 24 years. My brother in law is a bus driver (a great bloke who will do anything for me) who is earning the UK equivalent of about 700 pounds a month. He lives on what we call a council estate in the UK, but here it's Government supported housing. he has 3 bedrooms, a small kitchen, a living/dining room, one toilet/shower room and a small balcony. It's in the north of the city but it's linked by 2 subway lines and many bus routes. He lives in a private secured compound with shopping centres, restaurants and schools all around. The restaurants are amazing! There is no litter and no crime. The schools are pristine with loads of facilities including running tracks, astro football pitches and basketball courts etc..... His son has access to free education until he is at least 18.
Chinese Restaurants are great no matter where you go you’ll get great food.

Thank you! Please keeping posting videos like this! Short of visiting or living in other countries, this is the best way for me to learn. I watch different people's videos on China, try to take in as many different views and opinions as possible and make up my own mind as much as possible from that. Learning from people like you actually made me read books about Chinese history, politics and culture. I find this source of information more important than news. With everything one needs to apply critical thinking and consider the right to different opinions and mentalities that are based on where (and when, because countries change as you pointed out too) you were born and raised. So not everybody might come to the same conclusions. However if we only listend to the media driven narratives, we are at risk to become slaves to one sided and often false realities. Being open, listening and a willingness to learn and change is so important. I respect you for living this!

I can only share my experience living here and how I feel, opinions aren't always correct just the way someone feels about something. The new place is nice, Yvonne and I really like it. The cat outside isn't our cat. It is a hutong cat. There are about 10 different cats running around our area.

@@TripBittenI've been watching China and its social media from time to time. At first, I believed that the CCP were evil like everyone else. I'm not saying that they're good, but there has to be a reason why no one challenged them. Over the years, I quickly saw different perspectives of China and why they do things, what's their mentality like? I see why things are like this with China and how their society generally works. Things like the Uyghurs stuff for example, made no sense to me, and why I emplore people to really research over democratic bias. I try to tell my gf about China and she calls me a brainwashed sinophile, saying she knows more than me because she's from the neighboring country and I was born in the US, even if my blood is from there. She doesn't believe anything I say. China has its downsides but has a lot of upsides too. Hence why they're no. 2 compared to any other country.
I also find it saddening and disappointing that that hate slowly started to seep into hate for the culture and hate towards the people. Not everyone is like this, obviously, but i do feel like anti asian hate is growing nowadays.
I dont understand why they dont want to travel to another country and have their own experience.

I am Chinese and work in Ireland for so many years. I was verbally attacked by other nationalities during COVID. Also I knew some Chinese were actually physically attacked by locals. So Chinese people in China need to see what happened to other Chinese abroad. it’s not anti foreigner in China. I think most Chinese people are just angry about that.

A lot of your thoughts and opinions were very similar to our reactions to living in China. A Chinese friend of ours said, "In China, there is no democracy, but there is a lot of freedom." If they did, they would look around unconsciously, which called my attention. They told me it was better not to reveal one´s political preference to avoid troubles. That made me believe that in "democratic countries" there were invisible censorships too.

Back 20yrs ago i myself.... Everythings china made are cheap but they are all rubbish. Now.... I rather buy cheap china made products then japan made such ask house electrical appliances. Thoughout these years, my previous tv ,aircond (panasonic, toshiba, sony,Lg,mitsubishi) died soon after their warranty period expired . Now i am using china made xiami tv and other china made which is cheaper than japan/korea brand appliances... The china brand products nowaday are more lasting and durable than others. Chinese Tech has improved a lot in the last 20 years. Like I said, we used to think Chinese products were low quality, but now it is really hard to make that statement. The tech coming out of China is on par or better in many areas.
My Chinese fridge is now 18 years old. It needs updating but it is still functional. My Chinese coffee grinder is every bit as well engineered as an Italian one and was only 10% of the price.

What impressed me most while visiting China was the care and love the government has for the older community! They take care of the elderly very well. Unlike the west where the elderly are disposed like garbage. The education system is amazing, the children are the future of the country and the government spends millions on the best technologies available.
The food is amazing specially if you are a vegan or vegetarian, they have 100ths of years of experience putting a plate together. I wish I could live there one day.

Really? I am from China. There is no subsidy for the elderly in rural areas, no pension (100 yuan a year is equivalent to nothing) and no medical insurance. The elderly in rural areas only rely on their children and dare not get sick. If they get sick, the whole family may be brought down.

I agree with our views on both China and the US having visited them both for work. What was really impressive to me were two visits to a shipyard with a year span between them. First I saw workers traveling to the yard 3 to 4 on a single (electrical) moped. A year later most traveled on their own moped.

I don't think the government is having restrictions targeting foreigners since covid, it's just restriction from anyone from outside of China, including Chinese people like me, I haven't been able to go back to China for a few years now, Of course technically I can do it, just cost a lot of money and time of confinement and troubles. there is no way you actually believe that. Chinese people have almost no regard for human life and absolutely zero regard for animal life.
There are literally thousands upon thousands of videos on the Internet that display China's lack of concern and respect for human life. The amount of videos from China that show people being chewed up by escalators is unreal. That stuff literally NEVER happens in the West because in the West we actually do value human life so we have very strict regulations for health and safety and build quality so people don't get hurt or killed. And that's just one example. Elevators seem to be quite unsafe in China too - there are plenty of videos showing Chinese people getting crushed by elevators due to the lack of safety failsafes like the ones we have in the West.
Then there's the blatant disregard for human life that the average Chinese person displays... again, there are literally THOUSANDS of videos that show Chinese people just completely ignoring people who are severely injured, despite their pleas for help. If you are lying on the street dying in China, NOBODY will help you. It's genuinely disturbing. I've seen videos of children getting ran over in China and instead of helping them, everyone just completely ignores them and leaves them lying there in the middle of the street, nobody ever even stops to call an ambulance.
But of course that's the way it is in China, after all they live under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party - an organisation that has proved how little it cares for human lives time and time again. From killing 45 MILLION people during the so-called "great leap forward" to burying train crash survivors ALIVE in order to cover-up the fact that a train crash had happened so as not to lose face in front of the international community. There are many, many more examples I can give but there are far more acts of cruelty and callousness committed by the CCP that we will never know about because the CCP cover everything up and censor everything. We only know about that train crash for example because a Western journalist managed to secretly film the CCP demolishing and burying the wreckage of the train (with survivors still alive in inside). Who knows what other sordid, evil and downright sadistic things the Chinese Communist Party has committed.
Even on small scales like assassinating that doctor who alerted everyone to COVID while the Chinese Government was trying very hard to cover it up, the CCP will kill anyone who gets in their way and are ready and willing to sacrifice millions of Chinese people at a moments notice.
Saying that "life comes first in China" is incredibly disrespectful to the literal TENS OF MILLIONS of people who have died either directly at the hands of the CCP or as a result of the coldness and callousness the CCP has baked into Chinese culture and society.
And I haven't even gotten to the rampant animal cruelty and abuse that goes on in China. It's simply horrific. China shows almost no respect for human life but they show absolutely ZERO respect for animal life. From torturing dogs to death just to "make the meat more tender" to hunting entire species to near extinction just to use their body parts in Chinese traditional medicine. It's absolutely disgusting. But I am not surprised. China is a country where the government runs students over with tanks just for protesting, so of course they don't have any respect for the lives of animals.
I really am truly disgusted and horrified by the things I see happening in China.
If you truly believe that the CCP cares about people then you are completely brainwashed and deluded. The CCP isn't continuing the lock down because they "care about human lives", they're doing it because this is what they've always wanted - complete control over the population and an excuse to monitor their every movement 24/7. This is actually basically just my personal opinion on China, as a Chinese myself.
However, whenever I talk to others or argue online, I tend to come off as more pro-China, because nuance is dead and there are too many negative things on the Western side of the internet already.
The problem is if you say anything balanced or nice about China, people think you are pro-China. Nuance is dead, because that would require real thought and not just re-telling your teams (parties) lines. People don't want to accept that there is good and bad in every country....
Lots of things culturally in China and US are incompatible.

do you realise that China's incarceration number 1.6million is out 1.4 billion, and the US' 2.06 million incarceration number is out of 332,403,650, China does not have a higher incarceration rage as you said. Brazil has a population of 216,008,291, the incarceration rate is higher. Russia's population is 146,077,237 Thailand's population is 70,199,178, so forth and so on.

Basically he said China is not as bad as it seems from western media, but it is still bad place to be. I visited China twice, in 2012 and 2015, the first time with my daughter, the next time as a solo traveller and I enjoyed every moment. The people were open and friendly, I sang La Traviata with a Chinese military man on a bus travelling to the Vietnamese border and felt welcome everywhere I went. The country is diverse, beautiful and full of wonders. High-tech often meets tradition, and the singing and dancing in the early morning or after sunset encourages people to join in. The food is delicious ! I would love to travel to China again soon, there is still so much to see. Europe often doesn't feel as safe and easy for solo travellers, and it doesn't shine with the same cleanliness!
I think most people view China as it was say 30 plus years ago. I myself had this view prior to going, but that's because its a picture still being presented by western media.
Once you visit China, you realize that in many areas China and Asia is more advanced than the West. The irony is many journalists writing about China and Asia on the whole have either never visited or was only in China/Asia for short period.
One misnomer is that Chinese people have no freedom yet they have a lot of rights and freedom.

As a Canadian, it always confused me about the American educational system. The students knew everything about the United States but so little about the rest of the world..including Canada. And it was made clear, they just didn't care.

Yes, they teach us a highly skewed and bias version of American history. We all learn about Christopher Columbus “discovering” America, the pilgrims, the original 13 colonies, the revolutionary war, to their credit slavery but very little, the civil war, the Declaration of Independence, Lewis and Clark, manifest destiny, and usually ending with the gold rush and the forming of California. Alaska and Hawaii becoming the 49th and 50th state is just an after thought so that we know what the 50 stars on the flag stand for. But anytime the pillaging of native Americans is mentioned, they call it “a war” because most Americans are blindly patriotic. They definitely won’t teach you anything to make you believe it was a massacre or genocide. We also learn about U.S. geography and memorize the capitols of all 50 states. We do learn about world geography but they just glance over it and don’t really go in depth. Mostly just the 7 continents , all the oceans, and bodies of water. I’m just referring to kindergarten through high school. Oh and we also put our right hand over our heart, face the flag that is hanging in every classroom and say the “Pledge of Allegiance” every morning. Which as a kid I didn’t think too much of it, but as an adult find it a little weird and cult like. Although not perfect, I still believe our free public education system is one of the best in the world.

Truly enlightening. I’m a HKer, but I have worked to ensure I ain’t clouded by what I would call the “HK bubble” when it comes to China. From my experience and observations of China, indeed, the people remains friendly to foreigners and China’s stance on foreign relations is still foreign-friendly, but when it comes to internal policies, especially about COVID control and America in particular, it is indeed criminalising of foreigners, depending on how messages are translated to English or even the choice of words in Chinese. I personally don’t believe the government is trying to do this out of total pure malice, but I can definitely see how their changing policies are heading along a similar line to America’s policies on China. China is heading along a good path to success, but right now, some of their news does make foreigners’ lives in China hard or uncomfortable. Their news isn’t based on false narratives, but the way they utilise the truth is concerning at times. If they continue like this, we would only commit the same mistakes as America.
I am confident in China though. Talking to the mainland Chinese here in Canada, the attitude of the people is definitely friendly to foreigners. On the record of the Chinese government’s success in the past, I trust they will eventually note this problem. It’s only a matter of if they’ll recognise it soon enough and respond quick enough.

I agree with you, I don't think it is out of malice or hate, but it can make foreigners feel less welcomed at times (truth be told, I would rather be a foreigner here, than in the US). Again, it is always hard when talking about opinions or feelings, so everything I said should be taken with that in mind. I'm just one guy living here and my views have changed a lot since I have been here. Mostly for the good, like I said in the video.

I do appreciate hearing such opinions like yours anyhow; it’s a reminder that China may not be as shit as the West portrays it, but there are still issues and problems to address. I think so long as we are aware of nuances and the multilayered nature of these social-political discussions, we can really progress forward.
It's not even just China who pushes these anti-foreigner COVID policies, check out the videos made by people living in Japan or South Korea, two major countries heavily influenced by western culture who you'd think would be more tolerant and understanding towards western foreigners yet that's not the case at all.

Chinese product sold in the US was made by Walmart requirement, cheap and break easily. Chiense people do not buy such product. That was made for American. Gucci, Shanel and other high-end product sold most in China. The US is relatively small market for high-priced high-quality products.

Even mild mannered western media social stories about China, more often than not , lead first with referrals to Tienanmen, or Xinjiang.
How about every time I look at a good social media story about western successes, it began with an introduction of past questionable military adventures - such as ; Vietnam, or Iraq, or Syria, or Chile, or tragic disasters as a consequence of Corporate Greed?
Looking to the cause of this negativity eventually the pin drops. It is an ideological and economic war originating from the present dominant Global power.
Who controls Britain? Who controls Nato? Who dictates to the EU.? Why are all Western media outlets selling the same story? Who controls the media?

There are tons of censorships in the US! There are many things that the mainstream media can't report and they also ban social media accounts that expose the truth.
Tiannamen was a color revolution which recruited Chinese citizens and took place on Chinese soil (at the heart of the capital actually).
The CPC started to take systematic measures against the Xinjiang problem because Uyghur extremists, who were Chinese citizens, attacked other normal non-muslim Chinese citizens, again, on Chinese soil (Kunming railway station).
So both internal affairs I would say.
Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Chile are not USA.

Simple opinion: A government's priority should always be its own people and domestic policies, not foreigners.
I don't agree with your point on state media trying to antagonize foreigners(whether intentional or not). Because at times (especially now) you can't satisfy everybody and in China policy making always leaning towards "protecting the interest of majority". And you just have to live with it. The same as when I studied in the US for many years, I couldn't do things that I regard normal in China, you join the majority and social trend if you want to be socialized and integrated. But a foreigner is a foreigner, and as you said China has changed a lot, I also find it challenging to adapt at first from coming back.
This is completely different from the western media's stance which can be total anti-China narratives from top to bottom. You can hear the same news from western media and Chinese media and you get two complete different stories. It is not for its people but for the politicians narratives and big corporates interest. News is just a tool and they don't care whether it's true or not, as long as make people believe it and use it. Yes there same online media in China that only attract views with extreme opinions, but on the goverment level I don't think so. Chinese people do generally have more views and knowledge on the world than people think(you probably have the same view before coming to China too). The fact that Chinese people ARE aware of the world around them and understand them better is unknown to western audience who only learn China from their media.
What I would say is that Chinese media is really bad, in "propagada" for international audience. The international audience was never the focus or priority for the state media, not until recent years with CGTN. They are not trying to be like BBC or CNN, just see as another source of getting information. Just like in business, competition is always good for consumers.

I have recently subscribed and am really enjoying your, very informative, videos. I am living in my 5th country (Spain), having originated in Australia 73 years ago. I've lived in all hemispheres and have spent extended time in 27 countries, all told. This may sound unique but having met so many ex-pats from around the world, I realize just how many of us are shaking off our roots and getting out into the world. I love the feeling that comes with experiencing global consciousness and feel sorry for the poor, ignorant people who only know their own, narrow little world and the small-mindedness that comes with it.

I started changing my opinion by still living in US. I never been in China yet, but I'd love to visit and I finally feeling that lots of things were told, - wrong. It is different culture, it is not West culture. It is different and has long history. I'd love to learn about it more. Studying Mandarine for the last month.

1:17 my immediate thought was "Yeah, that's high, but china has a significantly larger population compared to the US so the US must have a rediculously high incarceration rate" and then I saw the next list below, which is the actual top 10 incarceration rates rather than raw population of the incarcerated and China isn't even on there.
Thank you for making this video! U.S. citizen here; the only thing that makes updating my opinion more difficult to do is that it's hard to know what isn't being said (due to the heavy amount of sensorship). Many positive things could be said about China to foreign ears, but until I know that the people who live there are able to voice complaints as well, I'm never going to have a clear idea of how bad things are or are not. I assume everything's normal, but I will never have as much info as I would for other countries. Anyhow, hope all's well! And I hope I can visit there someday.

Fair assessment. Sure, these days, things get more complicated if you're a foreigner, and it makes you wonder if they really want you here. On the other hand, the official line is still that they welcome you, and there is still a lot of stuff to encourage and help foreigners (I did benefit from a lot of that). I think if you have some true competence, it's not a problem. But if you're a low life english teacher with no particular talent, it's not the easy life that it used to be. As for censorship, you learn to live with it, but it's also my opinion that China would have a lot to gain by relaxing a bit on this. One last, and important thing about China: never think that what you see today is what it always has been, and what it will always be. Quite the contrary, the country changes, almost day by day! Maybe it's going one way today, but that might totally reverse tomorrow, or next month, or next year. You certainly know that, having been here for so long. It's just something to keep in mind when you live here. As opposed to, say, Canada where I come from, where things literally NEVER change.
Yes, the censorship isn't that bad just something you feel on a more day to day level. Like you said, things change here very quickly and that means any "problem" I have or perceive could change tomorrow, which makes it more interesting to live here. I do enjoy living here, I would have left a long time ago if I didn't like it here.
@@TripBitten China government is pragmatic. Alway change time to time. These changes are not top down but bottom up. Alway it is alway the party member that feedback up to the top. You don't even know you are facing a party member. Doing admission and logistic stuff become more and more easier. It's nice to listen to you talking about things in China from an American perspective (or from a foreigner's viewpoint, for that matter). I'd like to express my opinion about censorship and freedom of speech/expression in China as well as related matters the like of why ordinary Chinese like foreigners but the government seems to make it harder for foreigners to live and work in China, among others.
I was among the first or second batch of people (most Chinese from Taiwan and Hong Kong) coming to work in China after the paramount leader Deng Xiaoping opened up China to the outside world in late 1970s. The country at that time was dirt poor and there was no private business. The monthly wage of state-owned enterprise workers was ¥20.00 and there were 2 foreign exchange rates: (1) officially at US$1=¥1 and (2) on black market at US$1=¥10. A can of Coca-Cola cost ¥1.00 and the Forbidden City in Beijing was in a state of disrepair that was heart-breaking. Surprisingly, air pollution was unheard of in 1980's and it only became a pretty serious problem in late 1990's after 2 decades of toiling to churn out consumer goods for the West.
The ordinary mainland Chinese were very friendly, especially so to the American technicians in our team. With deep regret, the West gradually turned against China when they saw that China followed its own course of development and didn't become more democratic the way they expected. As with any other country, China has the same problems with dissidents and opposition groups. A simple arithmetic calculation shows that at 1% there will be 14.5 million dissenting voices in the nation. Now, I think you (and everyone else) understand why there is censorship of the internet and restrictions on freedom of speech and expression in China -- especially when the West and their mass media notoriously spread disinformation and hates against the nation (the very things that you admitted of being forced fed prior to your working and living in China).
I do hope that you can appreciate things from this perspective and be more lenient in your opinion toward China regarding the freedom that Americans and Europeans took for granted in the so-called "democratic" system of governance that, unfortunately, the Jacks and Jills on the streets are mostly kept from knowing the actions of those who wield real power once elected by you. For the past 40 years, successive Chinese governments have worked very hard to look after the welfare of its people and so the current government under Xi Jinping deserves the full support of over 95% of the Chinese population. The "feel good" sentiment is simply hard to beat, even for me personally at this very moment.

Thank you for this video and other videos you have posted. I have never visited China but read about it extensively and have a number of Chinese fiends. I am a retired doctor in California but I’ve had a number of Chinese colleagues so I get to hear their opinions. I love your comments m, I think it’s a more nuanced view of China, and it is a great nation and a great people. I get tired of the saber rattling in the United States and wish we would cooperate more with China.

Chinese are not saints.
When Chinese get hated for no good reason, many of Chinese hate back, it's the natural way of human being deffensive. I'm not saying this is right but it's just human nature.
Luckily, there's this "big evil villain" which controls everything in China society, yes the CPC government, and it won't allow extremism to rule its country.
For instances, several years ago there was this unsettling anxiety towards foreigners from Africa illegally over staying (when they should leave they don't) in a southern city, and some irrational ppl made extreme hateful statements online and such sentiment spread. It was at that time the Big Evil Villain stepped in, took some measures (A, find and send back illegal staying foreigners; B, crack down the irrational extreme "free speech" online) to stop things from getting out of hands.
There are pros and cons living in any country and ppl are just ppl.
I would love to hear more from Chinese living overseas and their opinions. I also think some of the feelings of anti-foreigner in China is because of the news about how Chinese are treated overseas. But it really comes down to media in general and how issues are presented. Overall, my experience has been Chinese people are friendly, but some of the government policies make life harder.
Preferably those with bruise on the faces due to asian hate movement. LOLS..

I am not living in China, although been living in Asia in the past 15 years (over 10 in Indonesia, almost 2 in Pakistan and almost 3 in Vietnam) and traveled to China a handfull of times.
Plus, my wife is Indonesian and her father was a son of chinese immigrants.
With the fact people aren't allow to say what they want or have restriction to research online, counts 90% less to make a livable country.
We cannot deny it is a blessed country when it comes to nature or cultural variaty, but I dont understand how people can enjoy living on a place where governments want to rule people's private life.
We cannot forget the "1 chlid policy" where a lot of people would give up their child when they realized it was a girl.
The one child policy is indeed tough and inhumane, and nobody would take that route if there was a better solution for the cold fact that science and reality pointed to.
Feeding an exponentially growing population would be impossible according to the statistics back in the late 60's.
Yes, there were many broken hearts and tragedies. But the remaining survived and live better.
