"You're a bigot!" (Probably not actually) autistic identity politics is annoying.

  • My name is Xanthe.
I get people obsessed with me quite often. Some people get very upset at my opinion (based from my lived experience and observations) that self-diagnosis is unwise. I have copped a lot of abuse over this.
The 'actually autistic' community, I think, is now mostly made up of people who self-diagnose, after being influenced online. Social contagion, in my view.
Many of the popular advocates are either self-diagnosed or late-diagnosed (after carefully shopping around for an assessor who is likely to go with their bias). One of these advocates has quietly admitted they have never been assessed and are scared of being 'misdiagnosed as normal' which will 'take away their identity' (and profit).
Others have admitted that they would never have been diagnosed in childhood, as nothing to note.
I've had clinically significant autism spectrum features since childhood. More obvious in childhood. I didn't 'mask'. A psychiatrist diagnosed me with pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified PDD-NOS, which was a developmental disorder alongside autistic disorder and Asperger's syndrome in DSM-IV. Both DSM-IV and DSM-V are valid in New Zealand.
I used to call myself 'autistic' for over 5 years. I now don't call myself 'autistic'. Partly as a protest at the watering down of diagnoses. Partly because it really peeves off those who are into identity politics.
I read out some of the comments from someone who has been recently obsessed with me. I forgot to read out the 'bigot' comment, so added a screenshot of it near the beginning.
It's like arguing with religious fundamentalists - goes around in circles going nowhere. A waste of time and energy. One of my interests is diagnoses (after all I have several), although it's adjacent to irritating politics.
Identity politics has identical patterns to cults, including the indoctrination, love-bombing and discarding. Where only they are the 'true' ones with the correct beliefs, where their ideology is spouted as absolute truth. Preachy hypocrites too.
I self-published a memoir which has more nuance. It's called 'Bipolar Courage: Are You Sure You're Not Autistic?' The subtitle was asked by an autistic guy. It was about some of the behind-the-scenes drama during the advocacy journey. It also has some insights about autism spectrum features (not regurgitated stuff). I don't really see myself as an active 'advocate' anymore, as the advocacy world is so toxic.

An interesting watch. I hate the culture of internet diagnosis, bandwagon jumping of the disability wannabes! Its a rubbish club to be in. I have spina bifida and a separate SCI, and depression.

@@liamh5127 Thank you. I actually avoid calling myself "disabled" because of the group identity politics nonsense. Will be uploading a video today about impairment vs disability.

People are always quick to judge even though they’ve never walked a day in your shoes. Keep being you.

…and if you did advocate or do whatever it is they are calling you out on, they’d find something to complain about that too. 🙄 You can’t win for losing and you sure can’t please everyone. Just keep doing you.

@@TheMentallyIncompetentArtist exactly. If I did go back to calling myself "autistic", they would still ostracise me for disagreeing with some aspects of what the "community" has decided is doctrine.

@@BipolarCourage I got into some arguments with the NDM on twitter a few days ago, apparently getting aspergers associated with 'nazi' was not enough, they are now trying it with autism as well
