  • Carstens Amplification's Black Flag Combo manages to pack impressive tone into a small package. This offering brings together a completely hand-built ethos from the wiring to the cabinet, a 12-inch Celestion Gold alnico speaker, and a voicing switch that easily slides between British roar and clear American jangle. Watch as Andy takes it for a test drive.

    I can’t believe Andy did take the chance to play ‘Swinging Man’ or ‘TV party’ on this amp

      +Mark Ormerod sure it does : ) they used common equipment (common in the US). Its unique souding but not difficult. one could probably get Flag tones from most amps, with a distortion or fuzz pedal. gotta turn it up + overload the amp input.

    I played through a Carsten's last week at CME. I think it was this model. In a room full of boutique amps this made the others sound like azz. It was hard to get it to distort, you might want a boost pedal in front. But it sang so beautifully while running it clean... if you were recording and could only choose one amp - it would be this. Its hard to justify the price, but if the price is no object then get this.

    Needs a presence knob or something, it's wooly with no attack to my ears. With the bass set that low on a bridge pickup I'd expect some trebly sounds.

    I take it this is more to do with “black flag” era Marshall’s than ripping out some Rise Above...lol. Is the boost just a variable bypass of the tone stack? Ha! Right after I typed and submitted Andy said as much in the vid. Patience grasshopper.

    A boutique JMP Super lead 67 costs twice as much but is 10 times the amp this is..... Sure, vintage needs maintenance, but really? A 22w amp for 2200 dollars? 😕

      Tilman Wolff-Moore what does the amp wattage have to do with whether the price is justified or not?
      Most play at home anyway.

    • @bradbarker4041
      @bradbarker4041 6 лет назад +5

      pdg887 You're paying for the time it took someone in America to make it, sparing no expense on parts. People find value in that, but, yeah, a much, much more affordable amp could get in the ballpark to most ears.

    • @pdg887
      @pdg887 6 лет назад

      Fair enough, and it does appear very caringly-made. The insides are beautiful. I’m glad there’s a market for this kind of amp, even if I’m even more glad that other companies are pumping out quality affordable gear for the rest of us!

      Fwiw I don't own a Bassbreaker (main amp = 68 custom twin), but if you think this is worth 2400 bucks, based off of a compressed youtube demo, I have a helluva bridge to sell you. Either that or you're a pretentious d-bag who doesn't mind spending money just to say you spent more than you needed to.
