Modified Mazda RX8 - One Take

- The Mazda RX8 was Mazda's last-ditch effort at making the rotary engine a viable option for a mass-market car. With a brilliant, lightweight chassis and body, practical clamshell doors for easy rear seat access, and a 9,000 RPM naturally aspirated engine, we find that the RX8 offers much more chassis than power, even if it is quite fun to rev. This example is owned by a racing instructor, and is modified in the traditional racing instructor way: mostly stock engine, expensive suspension setup tuned softer than expected, and way more brakes than you should ever need.
Check it out on WheelWell!
wheelwell.com/...
6mpg on track with oil jets consuming a quart every 1000 miles.
Now that's an enthusiast.
To have such a perfect drivers car, you have to do what you have to do.
Now this, people, is how you modify a car. Tires, wheels, suspension and brakes first - before even touching the engine. That way, it's the driver that makes more of the difference.
Thanks for pointing it out, Matt.
thanks man, glad you liked my approach with the build.
+John Burrows definitely the smartest way to do it. wish I could've been as smart haha
+TypeVertigo That seems like a good idea when a stock engine is in mind but if a high power engine swap is in the near future then wouldn't it be better to do suspension after engine tuning?
+Jinny Park It depends on what you want to do. For me the whole point of a car is to highlight its driver's abilities, not the other way 'round. I believe that's why there's the stereotype of driving instructors' cars being modified the way they are, mostly like John's.
Power mods ruin too many cars, in my opinion. Chassis mods can translate to a car that's still fun, even at lower (i.e. legal) speeds, and more often than not, they don't detract from the car's overall reliability.
And even if you're eyeing an engine swap in the future, by prioritizing chassis mods first, you're at least going to ensure that the car will be ready for the added power. You're expanding the performance envelope the engine's going into.
That's just my opinion as a retired time-attack privateer driver who managed to squeeze respectable lap times out of a low-powered grocery getter. Feel free to disagree.
TypeVertigo Oh I totally agree, but I think if a high power engine swap is gonna happen then the car should be designed around the engine. I guess if you already have an engine in mind then going either route wouldn't matter; chassis and drivetrain first, or engine first.
Of course reinforcing the chassis would be the first thing to do, but suspension should always be done after power is figured out. I just feel like that would be the more logical way.
I think you might have miss interpreted my question. I was talking suspension rather than chassis, but again, I totally agree with what you said.
185000 miles no rebuild still running strong love my rotary!!!!
Marshallmitsu engine no problem? still good?
Wow... that's awesome
With proper maintenance and attention to detail it will run forever, they are high maintenance engines like most performance engines
I’m at 118k not all need a rebuild :)
Mine is still running great at 140k miles! No Rebuild! :D Gotta love your babies!
Go figure its a guy that actually knows how to drive who upgrades his brakes and handling characteristics of his car, while leaving the power output pretty much stock. Unlike the rest of the people on One Take who are seem to try and get 100-200+ bph without even thinking about it.
Take note people.
You should do these in Mexico and call them Juan Take.
Lol 👌😂😂😂
+Alby Eight-hundred Perfect
+Alby Eight-hundred Juan Taco
+Alby Eight-hundred 10/10
+Alby Eight-hundred lol, well done sir.
This guy should be a presenter on a car show!! I could listen to him talking about exhausts and suspension all day long.
+MrBiohazard878 Thanks man, I would love to do that!
+John Burrows you're welcome! You should just start regularly uploading videos explaining the effect of mods, driving techniques and once your channel grows, you can start doing car reviews, too. People love reviews of people who can find a car's limit and know what they are talking about. You've got my subscription already.
Definitely agree, it's nice hearing people speak about things when they actually have an idea of what they're talking about.
This guy is super chill and knows his shit
+assassin72 thanks man
+John Burrows Thanks for finally getting a series one on here John. I was about to consider submitting mine... good to see! Enjoyed it!
+John Burrows it's too bad you had to sit through Matt's generic car person wankel bias (and multiple mentions of "8500" redline). Non owners just don't get it even when they claim to understand. How many times have I heard "if only they put in a turbo four instead"... zzZZzzZzzZzz corn flakes for breakfast. There is a reason why RX-8s are topping autocross events all over the country. I do like the HKS sound btw but wasn't a fan of the single tip, I have a turboXS on mine and it sounds really good.
Mine beeps at 9000 and will go 10000 love the beep and yes it's fast not slow
How do you like the turboxs I m considering it with the garageline header and no cat for $1000. My rx7s always had racingbeat. But the rx8 racingbeat exhaust is like $1600 with header and no cat. That's why I m curious should I even spend $600 more on the racingbeat or just get the Turboxs. Your opinion is greatly appreciated.
The fact that the RX8 has two more seats and two more doors but weighs hugely less than a 350 Z is a testament to how well built and light it is. But now the car most comparable to this is the BRZ. Except the RX is faster, more powerful, more practical with the half doors, sounds better, and more fun revving out to 9k rpm.
dont forget half the mpg
@@04dram04 dont forget half the reliability too haha
I’d take chances with 13b before fa20
My Rx8 out lived a few coworkers vehicles. Imagine their faces when I bring it up. They're not fond of rotaries and take many opportunities for jabs. Whose laughing now? It's all fun and games til their vehicle has issues and my rotary is running problem free. It depends on the driver too I suppose.
A lada has 4 doors and 4 seats and weighs much less than the rx8
So a race instructor driven rotary got 110k before the engine went kaput in all honesty that doesn't seem to bad for reliability.
Considering it's a "specialty" engine. The 8 gets a bad rep. But that's fine, it just means they are cheap to buy. I can't see me wanting a different car until I can afford a 911 GT3. Such a great car to drive. Fuel is a bit of a bummer, but it's so worth it to me.
Considering WRX’s (2014 or older) and STi’s have a ton of fanboys and are known for eating a piston ring before 100k or spinning a bearing I consider that halfway decent. With these cars just check the oil frequently and wind it out every drive to eat the carbon buildup away and it should treat you alright. Maintenance is key to any car running good
Ruri du weeb
I can tell you don't like rotarys. Shifting way to early.
I was thinking the same thing, I turned off the video after 5 minutes. He's disgracing that car. Peak torque at 5500, and he was shifting at 5 every time by the sound of it
Drove me nuts that the owner didnt say hey rev this bitch out! I had an 04’ rev out 6krpm drop the clutch and she wont stop spinning her tires while you drift around a track. Uggg he really missed all the fun these cars can produce at high rpm
@@ChillinwithChet yep, gotta get them rip em's up and keep em up.
I shift at 9k in every gear til 4th. The Rx8 was intended for the autobahn/highway.
Yeah can't complain too much about not enough power if you're not even revving it out...never heard it beep once!
I'm quick to comment, but I had to acknowledge the great audio. Perfect settings, Matt!
+JoshorBrownKid This kind of stuff proves that there is no right or wrong with audio, only subjectivity. This was the last video shot before i started using pro audio gear. So it's just the shitty gopro internal microphone. When i listen to this video, all I hear is the GoPro mount rattling. It sounds like ass. And yet, several people comment that "the settings are perfect." Then, when I use pro audio gear, and the sound is much crisper, people complain.
+TheSmokingTire can please em all, keep it up
+more skids hey you're here too huh?
+Jack Truitt i'm e v e r y w h e r e
+more skids the more skids the better, unless they're in your pants
Finally a one take with a spinning Dorito. Is this the first one?
LOL spinning dorito took me a few seconds to understand 😂👏🏼
Spinning Dorito. I love it
+Tiny Turbo lmao
+Tiny Turbo yep
Spinning dorito 😂😂😂
He never talks about how smooth rotaries are compared to normal piston engines. It's a noticeable difference.
because only rotary owners talk about stuff like that lol
@@djsonicc its like butter
I miss my RX8... It wasn't terribly fast in a straight line, but certainly quick enough for the street. But the speed it could carry through the turns was insane. One time on a 270 degree off ramp I was following (pushing) a modified 350Z. His rear couldn't hang and he wound up in a drift. My RX8 was locked in. It is the best handling stock car that I've ever driven. You can turn the stock car with the throttle. You can go from totally neutral to understeer or oversteer with your foot. I've never driven another stock car that was so nicely balanced. I would have another as a daily if it weren't so unreliable and bad on gas. Maybe I will anyways... :-)
That's because it has a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. What it lacks in speed, it makes up in cornering.
Matt fucking Farah is the reason why I work on my car so that one day it'll be solid enough for at least a one take. I can't think of a more thorough, honest, and objective American auto journalist. These videos are treated like a craft, molding and growing each time and the rawness of the one take is really how cars should be reviewed sometimes. It really shows Farah's composure on camera, quick adaptability, and natural eloquence. Under appreciated producer of automotive art right here
God damn, are you trying to fuck him or something?
The RX-8 offers the utility of a sports car, the performance of an economy car and the fuel economy of an SUV.
An ideal combination for sure.
I was in an energy storage conference today and the one presenter said he recently was allowed a drive in a Toyota Mirai. He said it wasn't the nicest car for sure, but it was the most expensive! Reminds me of A-7 pilots who would say of their jet, "It's not fast, but it sure is slow."
+Charles Flaherty My moms v6 Sorento gets better gas mileage, and it's turning close to 3k at 60mph.
+Charles Flaherty to be fair only the last one is actually true.
Sean Zukin A 500hp LS engine gets better mileage.
trust me, i know....
Your right, some of us are just Rotary heads. But we love them.
I'm getting used to waking up and having breakfast to these one takes. Keep it up Matt
+Bodybuilder X are you eating a bag of Doritos?
chinchy111 yeah I eat bags of doritos and drink mountain dew in the am. Only to grow my neckbeard of course
+chinchy111 I am, but it's not breakfast time here.
"Looking for that stock reliability" 🔥
I saw this guy in San Diego the other day. Tried to get his attention in my Mazdaspeed6 but to no avail :P
Thank You Matt Farah for doing a review of the RX-8. I totally agree with you with what you had to say because I own one myself. My balance so that fuel economy doesn't bother me is owning a sports bike but I love my RX-8 mainly because of its looks, handling, and sound. Let's just hope the RX-9 or RX-Vision what ever Mazda decide to call it go ahead with the production of the car because it's a whole new ball game with the whole new 16X rotary engine.
haha I am in the same situation as you. I hate the fuel economy in my Rx-8, but I do more than 50% of my commuting on a motorcycle so it makes up for it. I love my Rx-8! Long live the rotory!
Honestly, my fuel economy doesn't bother me. I spend $170 dollars per 12qts for oil. I regularly change oil every 3,000 miles. Uses roughly 3.8-4qts per oil change plus topping off in between oil changes. (consume oil by design) I also premix 4 fl ounces every tank fill up.
It would have been interesting to see how John would drive the car for about 5mins or so. Especially his shifting/shift points on that road at a quickish road pace.
Idk why I watch these anymore. I've watched the majority of matts videos and he's always unsatisfied unless it has a V8. All I need is the name of the car he's driving and already know his opinion. I don't hate the guy, I've just come to believe his opinions are predictable. The basic 'Murica mind view of V8 or go home. It's like he kept throwing the fuel consumption in that guys face like that's going to want to make him V8 swap his rx8. Just appreciate he loves his car and the rotary.
I bought an 03 RX8 yesterday, I cannot stop smiling, the sound they make and the handling is unreal, the crackles and pops from the exhaust make it a fun car to drive.
Thank you SO MUCH Matt Farah for reviewing the Mazda RX-8! I know this one wasn't stock-ish, but its still a review nonetheless (and it's recent too! for the non-rotary-educated crowd of 2016).
I'm ridiculously ecstatic and stupidly proud to daily drive my very own RX-8 and I cannot stress enough about how amazing this car truly is.
Thank you again for this video & your review, and I absolutely love watching your youtube channel!
All original, 1984 bone stock 12a,1st Gen FB Mazda RX7 owner. Well over 130,000 hard driven original miles. Never given me a single problem except for flooding once. Keep the carbon build up cleaned out, good lubrication and Rev it to red line every time you start the engine. I even drift it once in a while. Maybe not a lsx or a k20 but I call that far from unreliable.
and before anyone jumps my ass I mean rev it to redline at least once every time you drive it. Don't redline it as soon as it is started. I know common sense to most but some folks take comments wrong.
+EXTREME SCALE PERFORMANCE RC revving a rotary to redline every drive.. sounds like the best chore ever to me
+EXTREME SCALE PERFORMANCE RC agreed, I am curious to see how this new motor goes as I wasn't the original owner of the car. I got 105K out of the original and that was the first time anything went south.
+John Burrows
Have you ever thought of/tried pre-mixing on track to help aid longevity?
I imagine you run cats, so they might suffer (more than they already do on the Renesis) but, it might be a bit of extra protection for those new apex seals.
+FuLLeFFekT1 Premixing isn't a must. That's what the Oil Metering Pump is for. If you were do delete the OMP, then yes, you would need to premix. He's burning a quart of oil per 1,000 miles which shows he's driving it hard and the OMP is working properly. Normal driving conditions have burn rate of 1 quart per 3,000 miles. I've owned 4 RX-7's and a Repu. An RX-8 would be a great choice for my next rotary.
I daily drive my 2005 RX-8 and use a quart of oil for every 1000 miles. I haven't had any issues other than new plugs, wires, and coils. I am hoping I can make her last another 40,000 miles before a rebuild. Right now she has 96,000 miles on her and still has good compression. This is my second RX-8, I had to get rid of my first one when I moved to Fairbanks, AK. I got another one as soon as I moved back to Texas.
dude. farah. ridealongs with cool instructors like this dude... awesome vid.
"Don't you have to pull the engine to change the spark plug in this thing?" Classic Matt. Spewing whatever non-sense he'd heard based on preconceptions and popular group-thought. Keep up the work.
+mspenard603 That's why I asked the owner. I heard something and wanted to ask if it was true. It's not, so we moved on.
I will never comprehend why fuel economy is ever a topic in a sports car. Who CARES?! The car runs on SMILES per MILES!
+Martisan When you actually own the car, it matters.
+Armin K To me it will never matter. I could not care less how much my sports car use in terms of fuel. It's a toy, it's a hobby, it's something I have that makes me happy.
Try living in europe hahahah
+Fred hoogendoorn I live in Sweden.
If you listened to him he said the amount of power it makes does not justify the gas mileage.
This video was nice, from sound to commentating. Convo was smooth and wasn't awkward, solid video.
anyone rotary fans?
They make great placeholders for the inevitable LS that's gonna be in the engine bay ;)
Thank you so much! I've been waiting for this to pop up in awhile
I will say, he is very honest about the car. He owns it. He's honest about the downsides and upsides. AKA he is realistic.
Love this build. I have never looked at rotaries too much, but this looks like a fun car.
7:53 I agree when he mentions the difference of when there is a passenger in the car and when there is not, especially a larger person there is a noticeable difference in speed. Much more sluggish with 1 or more passengers for sure. I have an 04 and I've ridden up to four people in my car and I can say there is great deal of speed difference with more weight in the car.
smiles per galon, not miles per galon.
+Roberto Ferreira Bingo
From another RX owner, I couldn't agree more!
yup I have an 05 RX8 6spd...i smile all day long until I go to the Gas Station lol then it's all frowns
Lol 😂
klaas vaak and you to me, are shit 😃
Everyone has different likes
It makes me happy seeing you enjoy a rotary lol. The RX8 has its issues but they are super fun cars.
Interesting comment about swapping the engine on the rx8 with factory engines and having Mazda continue its life cycle... I sent an email way back in the days of Garage 419 suggesting an episode discussing what cars would be better if their history didn't dictate their engine choice and other attributes. The example I used was the RX8 and how it would have been better if they kept that chassis and used the turbo 2.3 from the Mazdaspeed 3 and 6.
Thanks for doing this one, I love seeing dual purpose DD/autox cars. Also, exactly what I was referring to when I last commented about brakes. Centric rotors + HPS pads = cheap stopping power.
thanks for having me come out Matt it was a great time!
That guy was my instructor when I drove a Gallardo and GT3 ayyye
I came from a 93 Honda prelude 👍 and I love my 8 and AAA loves me
Oliver Tree funny i had a 93’ prelude si and an 04’ rx8 love them both and looking to buy both and making them cheap track cars
In my opinion, RX-7 - the best looking 90s car, RX-8 0 the best looking 00s car. But I agree, rotory is for very niche people.
I've come close to buying rotaries twice. I didn't buy an FD back in the 90's because of insurance reasons. And, I didn't buy an RX8 (as much as I want one) for reliability reasons.
Matt, when will you be posting the video of your nissan skyline?
+gmaxsc at some point. shooting videos of my own cars is literally the last thing on my priority list.
+D. R. Davis "We"? You _do_ realize that TST one take fans from right here on youtube are the same people who'r supplying the cars, right? The variety of this show is one of the best things about it. Matt, seems to put those who'r willing to contribute to the show, first.
+Ander Pendragon (As it should be.)
+D. R. Davis There is no "we." For everyone that requests a car, there is at least one person to request an equal and opposite car. For everyone who says X car is great, someone says X car is boring. I have learned there is no such thing as a collective "want." Therefore I do the only thing I can rely on, time after time: myself. I shoot what I find interesting. And what I find interesting is experiencing other people's cars on video. I enjoy driving my own cars, on my own time, without having to worry about filming it. The only time this job ever feels like real work is when a) I'm on a 10+ hour flight somewhere, or b) when I have to film my own cars. I hate both those things equally.
***** My misunderstanding. All I know is that I don't have to pay for this quality entertainment, therefor I don't feel entitled to make demands. Regardless of whether or not I like a particular car, I always appreciate the opportunity to learn something new.
I never did compliment but I wanted to thank you Matt for giving this car a chance on your channel, and what's better, you had someone who has had experience with both sides and did some research on the rotary. If I could, I'd let you drive my R3 (although you probably already have). It has much more torque than the series 1 stock and still a car to fall in love with for its balance, sound and unique engine.
nice car. I like the fact he modified the engine the least. everyone wants to play the power/weight game, until stuff eventually breaks. then your doing the different numbers game.
i can stay here to ear you and John talk for hours. Also this malibu road is awesome, bring more car over there Matt.
Another winner Matt!
The quiet/nervous drivers seem to be far and few between now.
I looooove Rotary engines, (had an '84 five letter). They may not be the most reliable, or the fastest, but the intricate engineering that went into the engines just amaze me.....and the sound, second to none IMO.
I know you've done a bunch of Rx's, but do you think in the future you and Rob Dahm might do a One take with his sick 3-rotor, or 4-rotor (whenever it's finished)? It's always fun to see collabs; and I think you and Dahm would be epic.
Thanks Matt,
Keep em coming!
waited so long for an rx8 review thanks matt!!!
MATT THE AUDIO WAS ON POINT MY G !!!! HAVE TO CONGRATULATE THAT ESPECIALLY WHEN EVERYONE'S QUICK TO SAY HOW SHIT IT CAN BE, LOVE THE VIDEOS KEEP IT UP
How do you like the Hawk HP+ for track use? I ran them on my S2000 and currently on my NSX. They fade on me a bit after about 3 sessions of 20 min.
+Zygrene It really depends on driving style, but I'll do a few hot laps and then a cool down before doing more. If you have a car that sees heavier track use or a lot of it I would suggest a higher compound
John Burrows Yeah I'm driving at Laguna Seca this Sunday so we'll see how the brakes hold up in a pretty quick run group. Depending on that, I will probably upgrade to Carbotech XP10/8 in the future. Very nice RX-8 by the way. Modified the right way.
+Zygrene I run HP+ on my s2000 and have been running 15min sessions without fade. I'm running a good Dot5 fluid (Motul RBF600) with stock rotors and had no fade. Also running with semis so plenty of heat going into the system. So maybe it's your fluid, or old rotors (heat up quick as they are thinner), or higher ambient temps. It's barely above 20 degrees C ever where I live
I have the same fluid and at the time new rotors. I believe it is my driving style
9000Redline I ran ATE TYP200 DOT4 fluid in my old S2000 with rotors in good condition. Laguna Seca is a very brake-heavy track, so maybe that's why I experienced a little fade after 20 min sessions.
Just want to point out a few things on behalf of rx8 owners considering I have owned one for years. First off, I do agree that rx8's are very bad on petrol (its ridiculous), however if you can afford it then why not?. Secondly, it is wrong to say that they are low on performance. 231 bhp and reving to 9500rpm and 0-60 in 6 sec? can't go wrong there man. I feel like they are driving the 190bhp version of it which is why in the video he says revs upto 8500rpm. The rpm gauge on the 231bhp is upto 10k (i.e red lining around 9.5k). I have driven many cars including supercars (i.e f430, gallardo, 911 turbo) and I would in no way compare the performance of these cars to an rx8 but as the instructor states in this video, it is perfectly fine getting into an rx8 after driving these supercars because it is a perfect all rounder with good performance. Rx8's are low on torque so if you are not in the right rev range you wont get power which is why you have to know how to drive one. Its sad that they are so cheap these days and not many people appreciate them. On the bright side they are cheap to buy and easily upgraded if you are looking for a track day car!
+Ali Thank you for chiming in. The RX8 does get a bad rap for being slow, but they really aren't if you know how to drive one like you said. Mine is the 231bhp version. I believe Matt saw the red line start at around 8500 and stated that. The RX8 is a drivers car and is such a complete package that is doesn't need to be brutal in a straight line for it to feel fast even after playing with the supercar crowd. Getting as much thrill out of a package that cost under $10K VS Supercars $100K+ works for me
+John Burrows Agreed completely!! Thanks for your response man.
@@johnburrows2940 I had a question about the fuel consumption. Couldn't one add a smaller tank for additional fuel? Thanks for your input.
love the sound of rotary
This is one of those cars that you want someone who knows you to have so you can take it for a drive once in a while. I would hate to have to worry about the engine every time I drive. I'll stick to admiring them from a distance. lol
As a former (and never again) rotary owner, I agree with everything you said. My hat is off to the people that love and build them though.
I'm not a big fan of rotaries but I really like the car and it seems like a cool owner!
Subscribed because i really enjoy your one take videos and i think you are the best car reviewer atm.
I literally thought about if you had an Rx-8 video today and apparently you do, just now.
What's a better car? A G35 or RX8?
rx8 is light and nimble, the g35 has more power but is heavier and not nearly as maneuverable.
+Joshua Crandall g35 is more dailiable. Fuel efficiency, reliability, interior quality, and more torque down are in favor in the g35.
+zomski101 most definitely you're correct, better cars kinda subjective I guess, it depends on what you value.
+zomski101 I personally like the RX-8 interior more than the G35 but it really depends on what you want, I guess.
350z
Crazy fact. Thanks to E85/95 there are people getting 1700hp out of the rx8 because of the insane amounts of boost they are able to shove into the engine.
Didn't think the rotary was that thirsty. The 1 quart every 1k seems normal to me. A bunch of new cars do that.
I usually do 1 Quart per 3k; that's still too much, though, from an objective viewpoint. Means you have to pay an extra $5 - 6 dollars per two months. Maybe $50 dollars per year isn't too much but it eats away at your other disposable income.
Glad you mentioned the fuel consumption, it's aweful! My buddy has one and that's the one thing about the car that isn't great, along with the missing torque!
My friend owned an RX8. I fucking loved (and still love) it.
Sounds like a Supersport Bike, love the high revs.
One of my buddies has a Greddy turbo RX8 and the thing is fast and handles very well. I've heard that the reliability comes in the tune.
The audio in this one is so much better
Thumbs up to the owner of the car, really chill and cool :)
+trytthisnow Thanks man
these roads put a smile on my face :)
if you take out the floormats, glove compartment, the trunk passthrough section and the the tilting armrest, which just slides forward and comes off, that saves you about another 20 pounds
not a rotary fan but i love mazda
Audio is perfect, sweet car.
I love my rx8.
Perfect car for someone to pick up cheap and build it.
I turbo k swapped mine and makes abit south of 600whp (soon to be 800whp)
Perfect car for the power,
Handling is amazing
Looks great still to date, i get more looks in it vs my newer audi s4 and fuel mileage is great with the k swap now.
Im not a rotary purist though
Just like the car for the style and suspension.
The gist of this, if you don't want to get mocked and belittled, don't bring a rotary to this guy. I would say man, but men don't belittle other's passions/loves.
He goes on about low power considering the fuel economy, but before the current gen were American V8s any better? I mean the base 4th gen Caprice had a 200hp 4.3L V8 and got 18/26mpg
lambosrkwl good point
They could produce more power but emissions...
It looked like that car was on rails
I love my rx8 had her 4 years never had problems or rebuild and take it to track days she gets many looks
Matt, you need to create an American version of Hot Version Touge Showdown. I believe you are the only one that could pull this off successful.
I love my RX8.
i drove an rx8 with a k20 turbo, guys its epic.... and epic combo
Wish they'd bring back the RX-8. Would complete a truly revived line-up! Fingers crossed huh!
this review pretty much sums up what I feel about rx-8s... even this guy who didnt do much to the engine had it replaced at 100k... its a shame to not be able to own this car because of the rotary reliability and economy
Man I miss my RX-8.
Even though:
At 48,000 the transmission blew up $$$
At 96,000 engine blew $$$$$
At 104k the Cat caved in on itself and shot out the exhaust $$
All the while averaging 18 MPG :)
I finally got rid of it with about 122k on the odo as I couldnt put anymore funds into it.
Good thing these things are cheap as hell now , can find a beater for 3-4k.
The seats where amazing. So comfy. I could drive an RX-8 across the universe.
i even had one.. but mazda for sure have a special place in my heart.. they was my first choice on GT ps1 :'D
And it's just a great Car and looks and seems like it's a great drive....
my rx8 made me love the rotary engine but I still want a mustang as my other "daily"
Nice feature John!
Great review as always! I'm a huge fan of your One Take series! If you're looking for ideas, I would love to see a review of the Nissan 370Z, more specifically a Nismo 370Z if you can find someone in the area. Either way, keep up the good work!
Matt did you guys have dsc/tcs turned off. Did you discuss that at all. Curious if he keeps it on for autocross or if he only turns it off if he wants to hoon around like burnouts, drifts, etc.?
+Lucas Majewski , my RX8 is an 05 so it only has ABS. There is no DSC or TSC of any kind.
Finally someone who keeps the rotary. Rx series Mazdas should always run on the dorito engine
"ooh tumbleweed" Matt was so happy
There was that Morgan video I think where the inset video was put in the bottom center. There was something really satisfying (symmetrical?) about it being centered. Why not do that again since we don't really need to see the hood of the car?
Great one-take.
Yeah for real I would love my r3 rx8 more than most super cars. The only thing I would be slightly jealous of is maybe a Porsche or corvette. But my r3 full exhaust tune it shoots flames and sounds better than anything. I know v10 lambo is insane but the r3 on a tune and full exhaust sounds more serious than most things
Like it screams differently especially on the road daily it’s defiantly a wild banshee
I seen him smile 3 more times SPG
I think that this rx8 is badass sounds great and seems to be fast as well u know what I was going to say, basically it's fast!!!!
Finally RX8 :D
9000 rpm* sometimes 95 :) don’t disrespect my car like that
I miss my RX-8 more than any car I've owned, I'll have to get another one day, or an RX-7 but will seriously consider an engine swap just for economy and reliabilities sake.
Same this video makes me nostalgic.
It pains me to hear you say that, but that's your choice. I accept that
danmancino22 Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love rotarys, just can't justify the cost to daily one, especially with the way I like to drive!
+Ben B. Rogue agreed
+Ben B. Rogue from what I've learned from rx7club forums, keep it at 3.5k rpm while everyday drive, rev it once/twice a day, top the oil every 5000km, try to keep carbon buildup as small as possible and invest on some reliability mods.
But I've never had a rotary, even though I'm saving up for a FD, so I can't be too sure if it's all true.
If the rotary engines benefits didn't outweigh the drawbacks it never would have won le mans
+Caleb Fox and to then be banned. There is something about the racing pedigree that makes me enjoy having a rotary.
