Yes watch out for hard starts when warm, the rear struts tend to wear much faster than fronts. Look for catalytic converters that are potentially getting clogged ie very red hot. Stick with the 6 speed manual versions they are far better. Also the leather interiors are now fading and cracking so the cloth interior is better in my opinion. Look up Kanatechs kit to upgrade your stereo also. And only EVER use mineral oil for Rotaries do NOT use synthetic oil.
5 things to add 1. All RX8 have an omp (oil metering pump) an oil injection system to keep the Apex seal lubed. The 09+ have 3 injection sites, the 2 that sit near where the outer edges of where the corner or the rotors pass and then 1 in the middel (09+ only) 2. 09+ have a better starter, it spins harder and provides a better start. 3. GET RID OF THE CAT, they clog and cause heat issues leading to a lengthy list of problems, for instance, overheating which in turn ruins these motors. (Warps the rotor housings). 4. I would suggest either the mishimoto thermostat or a fan relay switch kit to have the cooling system kick on earlier than what the car is set to. 5. If you have the cat out and you plan on keeping the car. Run a good quality premix. (Some will bash this) in all S1 variants pre 09, they lack the central oil injection port. Pre mix can be that added insurance and will guarantee a uniform lubrication. Its best paired with no cat as it can cause cloggin of the cat. Bonus. Rev the snot out of them only when warm at least 1 time per drive. Or bring to redline a couple times while warm when out and about. They need to be cleared out everyday. I run an obd2 wireless scanner with torque pro app for monitoring my coolant temps. If the car is leaking coolant before you buy, easy answer DONT buy. Unless you're willing to get into some serious work. And dont be persuaded.
You can basically pay an exhaust shop to get rid of the cat or if you have a friend who welds. The thermostat is 80 dollars plus your labor if you're inclined. 2 hours max labor at a shop. Premix here for me is 21 CAD a bottle and it's going up in price. I run the top tier shelf available stuff, Ams oil saber pro. Best option aside from these potential money pits is not much in regards to driving capabilities for the price. These will offer the best road capabilities for the current market price. Next up would be MX5 but they can be a little pricey and less practical. There are mustangs and maybe other sedans that are RWD manual but nothing that will handle this good for the price. If you want reliable and cheap and mod availability. Civic is the obvious answer.
Mate, best channel I’ve ever come across. Happy you do the older cars. I’ve just discovered you but no1. Watcher now.. The accent makes it so much better 😂😂
Quick comment, all rx8s inject oil with the fuel through the oil metering pump, but the 09+ models have three injection areas rather than two. What you mentioned in the video isn't fully corr6 They're also revised to run higher oil pressures from factory.
Corrosion, not much to check??? It's a Mazda! MX5, RX8 all suffer from rotting sills and general corrosion underneath. I'm surprised these cars in Scotland haven't dissolved!
I love the shape of this car and have considered buying one for a second fun drive for weekends but always been put off by the rotary engine horror stories, great vid though ++
Any old dino oil is just fine for these Wankel engines. Also, the S2 (2009) received around 143 mechanical updates and basically fixed all the flaws of the S1
Don't listen to @Night Spirit, they came in 231bhp and 192bhp versions, an exhaust and new panel filter will get you a couple of bhp, a streetport /Bridgeport (which involves stripping the engine down) maybe another 10-15bhp. The Renesis engine really doesn't lend itself to increasing the bhp very much. A turbo would get you 300bhp but is several thousand pounds to do and have the engine last a decent amount of time .
I had a Eunos Roadster/Miata and then got an RX8 several years later, I'd say a Miata might be best first, parts are cheap and there's plenty around, very forgiving to drive and not overly powerful, probably cheaper to ensure too. Had my 1992 MK1 for 5 years and loved it (loved it even more after I added a Greddy turbo kit 😉).
I own both a 2005 rx8 and 89 NA mx5. NA mx5 is much better as a first car. Cheaper to run and easier to maintain. And so fun to drive. Both slow so ones not better than the other. Obviously rx8 much more modern, nice having climate control and comfortable seats but mx5 with top down and pop up headlights is so fun
It's a bit difficult to know who's correct isnt it ?
