The Helicopter Recovery Triangle (Single Engine you are screwed)

  • It's all about giving yourself options. Airspeed, Altitude, Power Available. Once you understand that flying a helicopter in hostile terrain is all about managing these 3 assets, you can keep yourself from running out of Lift and Ideas at the same time.
On this approach I recon, and choose a path that allows an approach along the Long Axis, best I can. Then we start to pull from Airspeed, Power Available, and Altitude.
    SO why?
Honestly, in a single engine, there is no why, I have zero recovery here, and I cant even make a profile to get an auto at the bottom end.
This is for TWIN ENGINE helicopters, to hopefully have one of these 3 assets to recover in case of OEI.
Quick note. Notice I terminate my landing and quickly pull back into a hover. My right skid had a boulder push out as I started to lower collective, starting a rapid right roll, headed to exceed my slope limitations and potential exceeed the critical angle.
Never throw the collective down in the back country, and always be prepared to pull into a hover.
Now with all this being said, at some point you are commited, you have no recovery options. Just the way it is.
    Enjoy the views!

Did you perhaps fly over Glacier National park 7/20? I was hiking and saw a 407 go overhead low level, thought of you!
