  • This flight started out normally, until my Exhaust Gas and Cylinder Head temperatures suddenly started spiking for no apparent reason. I finally got that new helmet and headset system from LYNX, so now you guys can hear all the drama as it unfolds. I really like how it records my talking all the time. What I don't like is how when I key up on the mic to transmit, the volume goes way down for some reason. Probably has to do with the mic circuitry. There is no active noise-cancelling in this particular model of headset. The LYNX system costed about $2000 total with all the options. I can make and receive cell phone calls too!

    Make sure your head gasket does not have a leak that would cause it to seize up or run hot . 2 stroke or 4 ?A 2 stroke I would check the head gasket foe a leak and check the torque on the cylinder heads for correct torque

    Just a couple of observations about your fuel line setup.
    The pulse pump should be mounted horizontally, presumably to prevent cavitation.
    Maybe you're running a fuel pressure gauge which will indicate the the output pressure of the pulse pump constantly. With the electric pump in series you'll see that pressure too when switched on -- eg, the pulse pump indicates 4psi, and when you switch on the electric pump (that model you have produces 8psi), you'll see the bump and 12psi. I've mine regulated to 4psi and indicate 8psi when I switch the electric on.
    Love you vids and narrations. Keep up the great work and flying.

    It's easy for people to monday morning quarterback but I think you did a great job! You started looking for alternate landing spots while also trying for the airport. You lowered RPM. You declared an emergency (sort of) and picked the downwind landing knowing that you'd still have plenty of runway (I assume you knew what the winds were). Even though you still had the motor, once you knew you could make the runway you brought it to idle. Very nice. Almost textbook.

    Great landing bro! I hope you figure out the problem and get her fixed quickly. It must be totally AWESOME being up there for real, but also more dangerous. That's one thing I love about FPV, if you crash, you don't die. You're one of the all around best FPV hobbyists I have ever encountered, your plane totally decked and customized beyond belief. I'm just getting started in the 'big time', got my Apprentice s15e modded with Eagle Tree Vector and EZ-UHF with the JR Module in a 9XR Pro for the sticks. Having a blast so far with virtually unlimited range (for me) and looking forward to performing some similar feats as you with the Grumpy Cat and maybe eventually ultralight flight which I also have always dreamed of. You have always been an inspiration to me bro, especially the night flights!

  • @Ophrahoak2
    @Ophrahoak2 Год назад

    I know the is out of date, but it might help someone. Pulse pumps should be mounted in a horizontal position. There is a weep hole on the side of the pump. The pulse line can accumulate condensation and make the pump less effective if mounted so that it will not drain.

      You are wrong. A forced landing is an emergency landing. A precautionary landing is also in the emergency landing category along with ditching. Before you try to correct actual pilots with your capital letters you should do more research on the internet, which I assume your vast knowledge comes from.

    Are you keeping a log book of all these parts as you change them so you can keep track of hours these parts are in use? Maybe before the end-of-life of the part to have these critical items swapped out after so many flight hours? Military uses that process. They call it A, B and C phase maintenance. Keep safe my good friend!

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  9 лет назад +3

      +John Smith Yes I did buy an engine log book for $7, however because I am a computer geek and grew up in the computer age, I immediately found it to be extremely inadequate. Instead I use a spreadsheet I designed to keep track of each flight, HOBBS time, maximum RPMs and temps, and I insert a line each time I do engine maintenance or replace a part. It has already become valuable to me, looking back and comparing temps and such.

Aaaannyhooo..I carefully unscrewed the dozen or so cheesehead slotted screws and that *$*@#( fuel pump looked like someone had taken a mallet and packet it FULL of rust flakes. • @HORNET6
    @HORNET6 8 лет назад +8

    I don't understand why you landed after saying "Major problem" and then took to the air again without establishing what was wrong! Instead of a lengthy commentary of what the temps were doing, with the potential for trashing the motor, you should have put the thing on the ground for diagnosis.

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  8 лет назад +3

      I suspect from your comment that you didn't watch the video, you just watched a few seconds of it and then posted your comment. Try watching it again, and your confusion will evaporate like the morning dew. Make sure you read all the notes on screen. This is the sequence of events: 1) I took off 2) I discovered the engine temps were 30-40 degrees higher than typical 3) I landed 4) I diagnosed the problem and fixed it.

    • @HORNET6
      @HORNET6 8 лет назад +2

      +glassdogangle Gotcha. I did watch the whole video but missed the "10 mins earlier" bit. Nevertheless you seemed to be aware of abnormal CHT & EGT temps early on. You keep saying "out of nowhere" "not good" "somethings not right" the temps point to lean running which could easily hole a piston so why keep doing mag checks and carry out an engine run up? If the engine is suspect then shut it down to prevent further damage.
      Gotta say you kept your head and pulled off a super smooth landing.

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  8 лет назад +1

      Yeah I am always aware of engine temps during all phases of flight, including warm-up. I do everything with as much awareness as possible, including warming up. Also engine warm-up temps vary quite a bit depending on atmospheric conditions, so I am especially watching during warm-up. I did notice they were 10 or 20 degrees higher, but this is not unusual. I don't change jets every time I notice it is running warm, otherwise I would have to change them again the next day. While flying, engine temperature is the instrument I monitor the most. Every time I look down, I check engine temps. Before I fly low over a row of trees, I check engine temps, then fuel flow. I look at those two thing far more than I ever check altitude or airspeed. So if I sounded like I was aware of a potential issue, then that is why. Also, the area that I fly over is like a huge massive parking lot. If you watch the video, you can see nothing but flat landable space. If my temps ever got too bad, I can kill the engine and just land it, and trailer it out with my ultralight trailer. But yeah, better safe than sorry. Next time I have higher temps than normal, I will be checking both pumps right away before taking off.

    I have once replaced a Rotax (for a overhaul) for a Hirt engine, never again !
    Beside that the Rotax has less HP, it is a much better engine to have on your plane.
    Cheers and fly safe !

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  9 лет назад +1

      +FGDude Yeah I like being able to record. As far as your past experiences you probably got one of the bad Hirth engines? I forget which model it was, but it gave Hirth a bad name. Nothing wrong with Rotax at all, I went with a Hirth mainly because Rotax no longer offers a good replacement for the discontinued 503. The Hirth 3202 is the closest to the old Rotax 503 that I could find. Plus a couple guys at the field recommended it. Keep in mind that if the engine issue was caused by a lean fuel condition, that has nothing to do with the engine! If the problem proves to be a fuel issue, then the Hirth has been performing flawlessly since day 1!

    • @RcBuddy
      @RcBuddy 9 лет назад +1

      +glassdogangle You could be wright here, it was indeed one of the early Hirt engines from some years ago, but I have never again trusted a Hirt engine sins, when your life is on the line, you go for security and a Hirt engine is not on my list when safety is on the table :o)
      Why do you use two (different) fuel pumps on one engine btw?

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  9 лет назад +1

      +FGDude I didn't build the plane. The original builder saw fit to have both an electric pump near the tank, and a pulse pump just before the carbs. Both are flow-through pumps, in case one stops working. It could be because of how high the engine is in relation to the fuel tank.

    • @RcBuddy
      @RcBuddy 9 лет назад

      +glassdogangle Ok, that make sens (sort of) I have build and flown a Rans S12, S5, S6 and a J3 Kitten, never had more than one pulse pump on board so for me it make no sens to have two.
      I had a clogged filter once, my engine rpm dropped first to 50% then to 25% on take off, scary moment at the time :-o, it was my new build Rans S5 second pattern run after maiden, I was forgotten to flush my new polyester tank after fitting all the hose fittings, you never forget that again LOL.

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  9 лет назад

      +FGDude S12s are nice. I almost wish I had gotten one of those instead. So when you install a new polyester tank you have to flush it first because of the resin remnants? Or was it because of debris left over from installing the fittings? What exactly clogged the filter?

    Great handling of the situation, glad that you landed safely!!! Just wondering, shouldn't you have a callsign since you are operating a radio in the air? Just a recommendation, you should call clear of the runway once you are off the runway.

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  9 лет назад

      +Roger J. Ultralights do not have N numbers. It is sufficient to use the term "Ultralight" or in my case "Hurricane" when identifying yourself on the CTAF. I usually use "Hurricane" at our desolate airfield, because everyone there knows I fly a Hurricane Ultralight. If I am at a busier uncontrolled airport, I simply identify myself as "Ultralight". As far as your recommendation to call clear, that is very good advice, and I did just that at 10:15. You might have missed it? If you are talking about announcing upwind after takeoff, that is unnecessary at this field, but at a busy airport there is nothing wrong with that either if you think other aircraft need to know your position.

    • @lookeflite
      @lookeflite 9 лет назад

      +glassdogangle Got it. I'm asking about the radio because I wasn't sure about the radio regulations for ultralights. And you are right, I missed the part where you call clear of the runway after you landed. As taking off from uncontrolled aerodrome, I usually call when I'm on the roll, climbing to join crosswind or climbing on runway heading and departure from the circuit or runway heading to wherever. I'm just stating what I usually do at uncontrolled and you are absolutely right, it is unnecessary to say all these stuff at where you fly but there's nothing wrong with more frequent position reports. Anyways, have fun flying and fly safe!! Love your videos!!

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  9 лет назад

      +Roger J. Yes you are correct. It is better to be safe than sorry, and announcing upwind, transitioning airspace, altitudes and departure intentions are all perfectly acceptable and recommended for ultralights as well as GA aircraft.

    Ben meaning to ask you. I have the same electric pump and pulse pump along with F23. How many hours on the engine when your electric fuel pump went? Did you end up rebuilding pulse pump. By the way love the videos very well done every time.

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  7 лет назад +2

      "How many hours on the engine when your electric fuel pump went?" The pump had already been installed by one of the previous owners, and I have zero idea when that was, or how many hours ago, so when I installed my new Hirth engine, the pump was already old. I did rebuild the pulse pump, but it didn't work very well. You should just buy a new pump for $50 instead of rebuilding it for $25. $50 is cheap insurance.

    Reminds me of the time my engine lost power on my Pegasus Q Microlight. I guessed that the engine was starving for fuel. I put the choke and Carb heat on and opened the throttle up full and it gave me just enough power to maintain altitude and i nursed it back to the Runway.
    I had the Engine looked at but they couldn't find any faults. The next time i started my takeoff. It happened again but i had enough Runway left to abandon the take off and put it back down. Scared the blazes out of me. I was only a student at the time.
    I stripped the Carb and blew out the jets. I happened to suck the emulsifier jet and got a little spit of paper in my mouth. It was causing a blockage. The paper came from the paper cage inside the fuel line filter.
    I changed it out for a plastic one and reported it to Pegasus Microlights. They stopped using the paper ones shortly after that, so i suspect i was not the only one who had experienced this problem.

      I am definitely going to plastic filters from now on. Other pilots have reported similar things.

    CRAZY!!!! This is exactly why I wouldn't fly one of these things, too 'automotive', I like a quality Continental or Lycoming to sit behind, 38 yrs driving planes & am still here with not a single eng issue & many thousands of hrs.

    Real world, nice video and post analysis of problem. Let us know what happened after replacement of these items. Ah, unless you have already done that in a video I have not seen yet.
    On a side note we are looking for a place up and that area. I am a private pilot with 1000's of hours and looking to start flying ultralight aircraft, how is the Danielson airport there toward sport flying and ultralights? If you know CT at all we use to do a lot of flying out of the old Madison Airport before it closed at end of 2006. I keep my plane at SNC (cherokee) but looking at buying a place upstate Ny thinking I would put in an airstrip.

      I live on the West Coast. Daniels Field is in OR. Almost everyone at Daniel's flies ultralight experimental or sport.

      oh, bummer I am on northeast usa. All the fun is out there, years ago lived in Santee Calif. and loved flying out to desert and landing, spend the night in tent etc.... learn to hang glide out at little black then moved on to big black mountain. Miss those days in late 70's early 80's. lol

      @poppabear9279 7 лет назад

      and, when your batteries die, every landing is an emergency landing. I like a more Prius design in aircraft... high efficiency engine for starting, electric motor, with battery backup.. this would be my personal style aircraft.

    • @flying-oyvinator
      @flying-oyvinator 7 лет назад +1

      much shorter flight-time.. and shit can still go wrong.. and one should allways fly in such a manner that emergency landings are allways possible in gliding distance.. i'm not sure about lipo batteries though.. if and when they go, its allways a very hot and burning experience, even if its the esc or motors, you are not in a position to disconnect in a jiffy.. but if a two or more stroke engine dies, it just stops

    The problem is a two cycle engine. It's why
    certified aircraft don't use them

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  8 лет назад +2

      The problem is certified aircraft. They are 30 times more expensive to fly and maintain than these fun little 2 stroke ultralights. Plus the view from an open cockpit ultralight is far superior to the tin-can view of any twin. Have you ever seen the expression on a cows face as you fly by in your twin, or smelled a field of spring flowers at 20 AGL as you float around the countryside? I have. Semi-trucks have a purpose, yes, but motorcycles give you a feeling that doesn't compare.

      I have had a 8 hour "silent" flight in a hang glider and buzzed along in numerous ultralights as well. I sold my airplane and now fly sailplanes. So it's all good... especially the new electric motors :)

      Ultra lights seem to attract sketchy types with defensive attitudes towards their marginal “aircraft”. Watched your “omelette” video...flight to Independence. Would not fly with you on a bet. Hope you are never near anyone in Texas airspace. Accident waiting to happen.

    that definatly sounds like lean fuel symtoms

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  9 лет назад

      +leandro5999 It probably was. My pulse pump probably was experiencing a little known condition called "hydro-lock". It happens when fuel condensation runs down through the pulse line and weakens the pumps ability to pump fuel. There is an easy fix, I just need to drill a 1/64th inch hole in a strategic spot on the pump, that way any fluid will hopefully be expelled as it builds up. The downside is that I will lose a bit of pressure, but having a pump operating at 90% all the time is better than one operating at 80, then 70, then 60, etc.
