I am Russian and I think the Rus storyline is dumb. First, the Rus were Slavic/Viking warriors and here they look like Mongols. Secondly, Rus was not an empire, as portrayed here, but a loose federation of self-governed city states that was more interested in expanding south and raiding Constantinople. Finally, I don't believe they ever cared to take back the Scandinavian "motherland". Every time Hollywood does anything remotely interesting with Russia, they always F it up. But, here the fact that they hired a Russian actor to play a Russian-ish character is a novelty.
And did you notice that they made all russians look more asiatic with dark hair and darker skin tone.

I mean to be fair, this show was never about historical accuracy. Honestly, sometimes it even seems to delve into fantasy and just uses history/sagas as an inspiration more than anything else. I'm a history buff so it is annoying to see such blatant inaccuracies, but hey, at the end of the day, it's about entertainment.

they dressed like slavs, not like vikings- but also definitely not like mongols. It would've been sort-of ok if they had some steppe people's dresses too, but what we got in the show was insanely stupid.

I am Russian, and for the first time I see Russian soldiers - in Mongolian-Chinese attire. The fantasies of the authors of the series play with the whole palette of colors. Apparently, the Scandinavians are reluctant to show Russian soldiers in approximately the same attire as they themselves. Which is what happened in reality. It was so necessary for the authors to show Russophobia and demonstrate the "threat from the east" that they completely forgot about the real historical facts. It's a pity. the series was good when it showed at least a partial coincidence with history. And right now, it's low-level fantasy.

As much as I love the show but in my opinion it would be better if the Rus would look as the Rus looked. The Armor they used absolutely does not fit in. It might be a reason of money but it´s a shame. Prince Oleg was actually a Pagan and Kievan Rus was Pagan at this time. And Kievan Rus never marched against Scandinavian Tribes up to the North. Complete NONSENSE! They thought to create an interesting plot? But it was not in this case, more a disappointment. It would be more interesting to show the Eastern Slavs living with their Pagan Traditions, something like that. Maybe a conflict between one Tribe with another and show a conflict with Byzantia as an idea. But all this Christianity thing got so fucking annoying. Prince Oleg the "Orthodox Christian" and Missionary Marching to the evil Pagan Scandinavia.. tooo funny!
The Armor Oleg was wearing was borrowed from Marco Polo series as well as other costumes for the Rus chapter . I wish they would have just made a Season 7 to explore more of the links btwn vikings & Constantinople with Hvitserk as a Varangian guard for Oleg or something like that. Instead of him getting captured by Alfred and renouncing his pagan heritage.
