The stopping power of the Ping i230 was impressive. Although it carried the furthest with high ball speed, the ball went higher, had a great landing angle, and stopped only 7 yards after hitting the ground. The deviation was also very low, meaning better consistency.
I've never been a fan of the way Ping's irons looked, but those 230's changed something in my brain, and now I'm dying to give them a hit. And those Wilson CB's are just... well... Gorgeous 😍
@@SePhO11 Yeah they are beautiful. There aren't many clubs that I'd kick my Adams CB1 irons out of my bag for, but those might... MIGHT, be one I'd consider.
The Staff CBs would be my 'shelf appeal' and 'heart' choice but the consistency of T100s, JPX Tours and i230s would put them at the top of my 'must try' list, although I'm not a fan of the i230 aesthetics.
That vid was pure! My favorite category of irons, and you almost can’t make a bad choice. As for me, I’m a T100 player, because I felt like I the tungsten in the heal and toe gives me a lot of stability on mishits - not that forgiveness matters to Thomas! We’ll done 2nd swing!
Great video, I'm currently gaming the X Forged CB but thought about transitioning into the TCB down the line. I was surprised to see that they had a lower Maltby score than the Apex MB however haha!
Loved this test. Great stuff, guys. I have the i230s in the bag and love them -- super, super forgiving for this category. At some point in the future -- maybe once the ZX7 Mark II drops next month -- I'd also really like to see a similar comparison of what you'd maybe consider "forgiving players' irons" at 32ish degrees. So, obviously ZX7s, Mizuno Pro 223s, i230s bent 1 strong, T100S, possibly the new JPX 923 Tour bent 2 strong. I don't really think P770 or Apex Pro would fit that category but maybe those as well. I know you've compared some of these before; just seems like it'd be a great time to refresh with some new stuff either out now or coming very soon.
Eric, thanks for the comment!! We actually performed a test similar to this earlier this year that includes Mizuno Pro 223, Apex Pro, ZX7, T100S, and P770. Link: ruclips.net/video/nI4CTcwmO4w/видео.html
I play the Wilson Staff Model CB’s, for their price point i dont think you would find a better iron comparatively, they were as good as the P7MC when i went for my fitting and 2/3 the price.
Good comparison test and interesting results. I would suggest a comparison test for these same irons at a ten mph lower swing speed because carry, spin, launch angle, etc, may be quite different. At high swing speeds one usually sees longer carry distance with less spin, but that may not be the case with low swing speeds but I am not fully sure, and if so, at what swing speed this carry distance becomes less for same amount of spin?
Good comment and question! It all depends on how the club is delivered and the angle of attack. If the swing is all the same, but the speed is slowed down, the spin rate will actually decrease. Meanwhile, if everything remains constant except the angle of attack is steeper, the spin rate will increase. By having someone like Thomas hit the shots, who can swing very repeatably, we can start to see some trends develop that might stay true for the general population of golfers that test these irons.
@@2ndswing thanks for the good reply and technical answer which I agree with. My actual point is for slow swing speed golfers where there will be a long or mid iron where is too little spin to keep the ball in the air (ball falls out of the sky) and carry may even be less than a higher lofted club. Keep up the good videos!
Thanks for watching! The PING i230 is closer to the P770 in forgiveness than the 225 or P790. With that said, for a players cavity, the i230 is superb in the forgiveness category.
Own the I230s and these have been the most consistent irons I have played with. No fliers and great stopping power. Told my buddies that these are "cheat sticks" and they laughed. Let them hit them and they instantly like them as well.
Even though I play Ping i230, I do believe this video represents more what club fits best for this individual than what club is most consistent. Anno 2022 these data can be obtained objectively through parties like Garmin and Arcoss. They have databases with millions of shots by players with various clubs and handicaps. Curious what their analysis reveals.
I recently hit the i230s and compared to my current gamers (G425) Was shocked! I had no problem with forgiveness and actually hit them straighter and had much better distance control. My miss is normally a pull or hook so I loved that the i230s had less offset but were still easy enough to hit. I wish they were a little more affordable! These buckets we put clubs in can be confusing. “Players Iron”… guess I’m a player even though my handicap is over 20 😂
I agree that they shouldn't group clubs into categories the way they do... I'm a 16 handicap who constantly hits driver into the woods and 3 putts a lot! My iron play is the best part of my game. I was hitting irons the other day and I hit the Wilson CB irons so much more consistently than my Cobra Forged Tecs.
If more spin potentially gives more control then why would the TM be such high dispersion ? If there were more shots taken would this dispersion change significantly ?
Thanks for the comment! We may in the future -- we do get several of those brands in our inventory as trades. But we do tend to prioritize testing clubs that are available in our fitting bays.
Thanks for watching!! Because it's 32 degrees of loft, we felt the Srixon would be better to compare to P770, T100S, Pro 223, and Apex Pro. We did that here: ruclips.net/video/nI4CTcwmO4w/видео.html
Thanks for the note -- and we understand this will be a popular question. At 32 degrees of loft, the ZX7 is a bit stronger than the other irons in this test, so we felt it would be best to leave it out. We have performed tests before comparing it to Titleist T100S, TaylorMade P770, and Callaway Apex Pro.
Thanks guys, always enjoy you two. If loft is that important to your categorization, I would suggest your tests include matching lofts on irons so that we get a truer comparison of performance
@@2ndswing why compare it to p770 and apex pro? Completely different categories. Srixon is a 1 peice endo forged iron. The other 2 are cast hollow bodies with forged face inserts. If you’re worried about the loft just bend the srixon weak to get a loft for loft comparison
Thanks for watching!! With the 223 at a little stronger loft, we feel it compares more closely to other models such as the Callaway Apex Pro, TaylorMade P770, Srixon ZX7, and Titleist T100S. We actually performed that test awhile back: ruclips.net/video/nI4CTcwmO4w/видео.html
I was torn between the T100 S or the Apex TCB. I went with TCB because titleist doesn't do a military discount, Callaway does. Good on Callaway. This will be my first set of Callaway irons.
T100 is the most forgiving Titleist iron since the birth of the AP2. There's a trend in manufacturers over the years decreasing the forgiveness of their irons, but the T100 reverses this trend. This data is collected from the Ralph Maltby head measurement and forgiveness scores. The Ping S55 is still the highest forgiveness score out of any players type iron in the last 10 years, only behind the Ping G425 GI iron by 11 points. Shame, it's also the ugliest.
If you hit the titleist or any club 6 times again the dispersion circle would be different .... pointless test... they're all the say, just a few with different lofts...

Agreed on both points!
The Staff Model CB’s look lovely and perform fantastically, although i am slightly biased as they are my current irons.

T100 all day. And I love that they give us a loft choice in the T100s without having to screw up the sole/bounce.
and for the ping with power and retro lofts but i’m guessing the titleist feels better
For sure! The T100S option is HUGE for us as fitters
I230 is a beast. T100 is very forgiving and 921 Tour is also very forgiving for a pure forged cavity. Great test.

It's interesting that the T100 dispersion ring is the only one going short left to long right
One of these days I'm going to try the Cobra King Tour. I have Cobra Mim 2 wedges (56 and 60) and they feel amazing.

It doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that the reason the i230 goes higher is because it has a wider sole with more weight low in the club.
