Just what I was going to recommend....Also John Farnham's duo with other Aussie icon, Jimmy Barnes, doing a live version of "When Something is Wrong with my Baby" (from Hey, Hey it's Saturday)....it will blow your socks off.
I remember when this song was released and gained world wide acclaim. I heard him being interviewed on German radio and they asked John to sing something and he sang this Cappella and blew their socks off. Love our John! ❤❤
If there's anything that shows how important good technique is, and how much Farnsy has perfect technique himself, it's the fact that his voice is still just as amazing, just as powerful, just as flexible and with just as much range, even in his mid 70s. Just extraordinary!
I always love seeing people's reaction to John Farnham. For the record, the bagpipe solo isn't just for this concert. It was part of the original studio track and most if not all live performances over the years. I agree with earlier concerts. Live renditions of When the War is Over and Help really, really show off his power.
Not quite all, I know in one they replaced it with a keyboard/guitar thingy for the concert. But I believe "most" yes. Adds a lovely touch tot he piece.
I worked in the music industry in Australia and got to go to an 'industry' show with John at just a piano/singing. He SMOKED a cigar and drank straight whiskey. He belted out the most amazing performance and was so humble and jovial. At this point I laughed at my own talent as a singer.
I grew up listening to Farnsey (along with a few generations of Australians), and I don't know why, but this song gets me in the feels EVERY SINGLE TIME!
I’m so glad we Australians appreciated him. Whispering Jack was my first album. I was 10, and I gave zero regrets. I’m so glad John continued to be a proper legend.
Johnny's version of Help by the Beatles is a favourite of mine. It's a brilliant cover as the tempo is slowed down and the song works SO much better at a lower tempo - either John or Paul said that they had originally wanted to record it slower but for some reason they didnt change it. Definitely give it a listen when you get a chance - Johnny just hits his high notes so perfectly
As an Aussie it thrilled my heart to see you enjoy this so much! 🙂. It is kind of our national song and we LOVE the bagpipes in it as well. Thanks for the wonderful reaction
It really is a pity that the rest of the world are only now discovering John Farnham. The man is 73 now and could probably still sing better live than many current artists. Every time he brought out a new album, I was so excited at the prospect of seeing the live tour that inevitably followed. In my opinion, NO ONE could sing live like John Farnham. Even if I wasn’t a fan, I still would have considered it an honour to listen to a voice like that LIVE. For those not familiar with his work (particularly the live stuff), it is well worth the effort to search him up on RUclips. You won’t be disappointed.
As an Aussie, I’ve grown up with this song as our classic and our anthem. I’ve always loved Farnsy and yet have never stopped long to really break down his technical abilities. Your video and others similar to it on RUclips have helped me to not only appreciate him as our icon and appreciate his amazing music, but also to recognise how exceptional his actual vocal technique really is!
Love how much you love this as a singer. Same as me. Watching his vowel work, his placement. He’s a phenomenon. And he’s always like this. Never less than a tour de force. ❤❤ love him to bits. This is the archetypal Aussie anthem.
Apart from “ Help” and “ When something is wrong with my Baby” : “ please don’t ask me” and “ Gesthemane” from Jesus Christ superstar are my favourites. Also “That’s freedom”. Who am I kidding : love So many of his songs and have seen him live several times. So good
Hit the nail on the head my friend. John Farnham is Australia's best vocalist full stop. what a voice, and yes, his version of Gesthemane blows me away every time.
Farnham's "Gethsemene" is my favourite version of that epic showstopper of a song. He gives it an entirely new vocal spin which has rarely been repeated and never matched.
The piper's part is iconic. The entire song is iconic, but I just want you to feel reassured that it has been there from the start and the song will never be the same without it! The songs people are recommending in the comments are great, but if you want to be astonished by his capacity to deal with ballads, try "Burn For You".
One of the best male vocalists ever, Farnham has a 3 octave range and as you’ve rightly noted he full belts out his highest register notes without going into falsetto. He’s sung with Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Celine Dion.. just legendary. Thanks for the reaction! PS Farnham was born in England. Our other Aussie legend Jimmy Barnes was born in Scotland! Jimmy is the master of false vocal chords!
Kappy, Kappy, Kappy...vocal cords, surely? You had me going with the 'chords" bit...mind you, it'd be a handy trick; he could sack the kids and sing lead and bv's at the same time.
@@mrmockatoo6786 yes Mocky, the use of false vocal cords is what allows Jimmy Barnes to belt the way he does without losing his voice! PS thanks for pointing out my typo. I’m slipping.. 😆
I once rang a radio station to complain about them playing so much Cold Chisel/Jimmy Barnes (can't stand either) and was called unAustralian on air... I laughed out loud and called the announcer a dick and he hung up on me... 😂🤣😂
He was my first musical love 😊 5 years old and I fell in love with him. Nearly 40 years later, I love him still and this song still speaks to me ❤️ you’ve made my day reviewing John ‘The Voice’ Farnham 😊
Good to see the Legend getting some attention, when Home Free came to Australia they did part of the chorus of this song and everyone in the audience answered just like they did here, it's an unofficial anthem for all Aussies and the message is just as important now as when it was written over 30 years ago. The reason people who want an expert breakdown like this will use this version is because, on studio albums he pulls it back and doesn't give it everything like his does in a live performance. His backup singers have been with him for most of their careers (his and theirs) and when asked if they wanted to go do their own thing, which they're well talented enough to do, they always said "No, we want to stay with John" Great to see an analysis like this Beth, hope to see more John Farnham on your channel in future.
Thanks so much for this. John is more than an institution here in Australia, he is one of our favourite sons. His catalogue of works are amazing from his time singing solo to his time as the lead singer of Little River Band. This song is a true anthem for us and you won't find an Aussie who doesn't break into song when this comes on the radio or TV. Unfortunately bon August 23rd 23022 john underwent 12 hour surgery on his throat after the discovery of cancer. He is recovering well which is the main thing, but we are yet to hear whether or not he will be able to sing again, something he loves so much. We are all so grateful for his recorded works and I am so lucky to have seen him sing in concert on a number of occasions, but I would give it all up just to know he is going to recover from this terrible news. Onya John. You can do it mate.
Thanks Beth! I have been playing bass in US bands for (literally) 50 years, and I am amazed that I, too, had not been aware of John Farnam. Shame on me for being so provincial. Thank you for your coaching, and even more for your willingness to seek out and share vocalists from around the globe.
Love your reaction, he’s one of the greats. Would quite enjoy seeing you breakdown the complementary and contrasting dynamics of the soulful duet John did with the gravelly, hard-rocking Jimmy Barnes, “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby”. Or really any of Farnsey’s other songs, they’re all masterful.
I mentioned about that song a long time ago but it never seems to eventuate ! There are three great singers in that song Barnes , Farnham and Diesel ( i believe he does the the back up harmony as well as play the guitar) .
Yes. As an Australian I was shocked and horrified that you had not listened to John Farnham before. And I'm also thrilled and delighted that you now have. He is an Australian icon. Humble. Unassuming. And a force of nature.
An unofficial National anthem back in the day. Everyone could sing this one. It's the distortion in his belts that really gets me. The power of his voice is obvious by how far away he has to hold the microphone at times. As others have suggested, John's cover of 'Help' from the same concert will really get your attention. Please make it a priority.
Aw there's so much I could say about this reactions, about John.... but what really got me was your reaction to the pipes!! Both sets of my grandparents were Irish and Scottish, respectively, and I ALWAYS have the same reaction as you!
I loved watching you fall in love with Johnny, he’s an Australian icon and as loved as Steve Irin. I grew up listening to him and still do at 39! So talented, so cheeky, so loved. He made a whole concert when we had bad bush fires for donations, he’s an Angel of a person ❤
Yes, Beth, a shocked and horrified Australian here. Been here tapping my fingers on my desk for years waiting for this day 🤣 Glad you had the opportunity to discover this vocal genius - and thank you. This is not even close to his finest performance either. His version of Help by the Beatles - it doesn’t get much better: ruclips.net/video/dv54giOSRKs/видео.html
I fell in love with John Farnham voice in 1967 on my first visit to Australia when his first hit Sadie, the cleaning lady was on top of the charts. I emigrated to Australia in 1973 and had the privilege of hearing his voice on the radio virtually every day
John Farnham's voice has always had an emotional impact on me. Just the knowledge that a voice like his exists makes me happy. That mine will never be like his makes me envious (but not despondent - I like my voice, it just isn't like his, is all). The beauty and power makes me seriously cry with joy and awe every time I listen to him sing certain songs. Thank you for reacting to him.
You would be pleased to know that John Farnham is also a genuine, kind Australian bloke...I remember as a kid his apearances on "Hey Hey its Saturday" in the late 80s and 90s were always alot of fun...he would sing and then stay around for number of segments after....
Welcome to the rabbit hole which contains quite a few iconic Australian singers. As many people have already mentioned, John Farnham's version of Help is a must-see. As is the duet with Jimmy Barnes singing 'When Something is Wrong With my Baby.' Then that will open the whole Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel rabbit hole. Lots of rabbit holes, but then again, this is Australia.
I think the backing vocalists deserve a bit of love as well. I’m sure John rode them hard to get what he wanted, but the result is exquisite - just listen to the acapella part. I especially like how perfectly they sync with his prolonged note in the last pre-chorus: ””How long can we look at eachotheeeeeeeerr…”. So sweet. Also, I’m forever impressed with sound engineers who make a perfect mix out of this many sound sources. Not for the faint of heart.
Another Aussie here. I live right by an events venue. Whenever they have a cover band do a version of this song the entire place erupts in unison with the singer. It truly does hold anthem status. Power to you, John x
6:33 I just loved seeing Beths surprise reaction when the man walked on stage and started playing the bagpipes. Nice one Beth. I love this song thanks for sharing.
When you saw the Bagpiper that's when I broke too. Im an Aboriginal female Australia and I so get it. To hear ones cultural soul music blended in such a production along with the musicality of a big production of music professionals such as an orchestra and band. Let alone the vocal powerhouse on vocals. I totally get it. John Farnham is an Aussie Legend and called The Voice in my country . Loved your reaction to this powerful song's, lyrical and live rendition. Stay well my Sista. : )
Mister John Farnham YOU are the voice!!! Beth I looooove your reaction! This is an incredible composition and the message is a real anthem, so positive and so uplifting. I wonder... will we hear your cover of this one Beth?
Can Not Believe You Haven't Heard Farnsie BEFORE !!! OMG! He IS The Voice. Absolute legend. Not the least because he was a Plumber's Apprentice before he launched into singing and has never had a formal vocal lesson. He said he just listened to as many other singers as he could and then just 'tried it out'. Not bad for self taught huh!? He's also a terrific song writer. You should listen to the song he wrote for his wife; " Burn For You' and " Help" ( from this same Concert } and so many more. Enjoy. : )
Surprise! The greatest reaction to a fine song ! As an Aussie, John was our hero! Bagpipes are popular here in music too…. Check out AC/DC. I went to this tour in Brisbane. Thanks Beth, you reaction was honest and beautiful!
As a (half) Scotsman brought up in Australia I definitely had some kind of emotional response to your reaction to the bagpipes on this one. Loved this. "Reasons" is another great one to check out from John. Jorn Lande has a sensational hard rock version of this track too.
John has such extraordinary crowd command. I took my new hubby( not a Farnham fan) to see this performance (@ Melbourne Concert Hall) and by the time the bagpipes came out the entire audience were on their feet clapping along. Even hubby!
My understanding is, that John never had formal training as a young man, he is a naturally gifted singer & arguably one of our greatest singers ever!!! A proud Aussie! 🥰
No, he didn’t! You’re right. He’s been a singer/ songwriter since he was a boy & has perfect pitch, tone, delivery and always been a natural performer too. It’s sooo impressive to realise as an adult when we grew up with his ‘80s era (my parents grew up in his “Johnny” Farnham era) I love watching his earliest performances when he was starting out.
When I was 17, John was 19, and the local speedway operator decided to run a music festival at the Liverpool Speedway (NSW), close to where I live. John was just starting out on his long singing career (he is now 73), and the expected crowds didn't arrive, so they refused to let John come on stage because they didn't want to pay him his full fee... I was very disappointed.
I saw him live when someone pulled out on a friend and a free ticket came my way. It was an emotional performance. I loved it! He also has a great sense of humour on stage.❤
Thank goodness for the internet. John Farnham and his good mate Jimmy Barnes deservedly being internationally recognised now thanks to RUclips reactors.
I loved this video so much - I absolutely loved this song growing up. I’m a member of a choir now and they covered this years before I joined it - it came back into our repertoire pre corona. I got to perform it twice pre lock down - a real crowd pleaser! Our choir leader got the crowd to join in - a great feel good to sing song, very motivational, great to really belt it out, and a fantastic song to really challenge male bass! And great with the bag pipes - they make it along with the amazing Melbourne orchestra!
I hadn't realized til now how much of a vocal powerhouse this man is, WOW!! And, by the way, I teared up as well, listening to him and watching you tear up. Thanks! That just healed me after the shitty night I'd had earlier this evening.
So happy you've found John. He is vocally extraordinary and his stage craft is also not to be dismissed. An absolute professional. I was hanging on the edge of my chair waiting for you to reach the bagpipe sequence also. Totally worth it. As quite a few others have mentioned, if you're planning a dive into John Farnham, make sure you check out his cover of "Help" by The Beatles from this same concert. It is a master class. Greatest male vocalist not to be a household name around the world!
he makes women cry every where he goes i took my mum to see him on his farewell tour and ive never been surrounded by so many crying women of all ages , truly the best performer to this day ive ever seen
There are many famous songs in Australia that we all know but none bigger than You're The Voice. Put this on in any pub on a Saturday night and every single person there will know every word. It's a bonafide anthem.
The Man The Legend, beautiful voice power and passion. This is not a song its an Anthem. The unofficial Australian National Anthem that more than just an entire Country know all the words to. I am Canadian and I will stand for this man singing this song. Much RESPECT!!!!!!
Farnsy's voice is just natural easy... there is not effort for him, which is why he has such fun singing.... a true living legend. He barely needs a mic.... Aussie anthem.. which in the last few years should be a world anthem. Even those of us who grew up with this song... we still get emotional whenever he sings it.... Also of note his backing vocalists.. they have been with him forever and really compliment his voice....
I love your reaction to this man and that song! From what I’ve just read on Google his recovery from surgery for mouth cancer is going well. Thank God, he’s very dear to me and millions of others. I loved watching you loving the performance.
I've seen many reactions to this song, but I think this is one of the best, the pure joy on your face when the bagpipes hit was beautiful. Would love to see you react to John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes "When something is wrong with my baby" As they're 2 amazing Australian voices, very differently utilised but together have so much power.
I was 16yo and living in outer Melbourne when this song was first released. As with the first time I heard it, it still makes the hairs on my arms stand on end and brings a smile to my face. Anyone who has not seen the original music video released with the song, should. It features Oscar nominated actress Jackie Weaver and her then husband, Darryn Hinch, an Australian reporter, broadcaster and politician. By watching the video, you’ll truly understand what ‘You’re the Voice’ means. Stand up people, make yourself heard when you know things need to change. John Farnham is a living legend currently fighting the health battle of his life. My thoughts and best wishes, along with those of thousands of others, are with John at this time. Lastly, look up Celine Dion singing this song alongside John himself. It’s amazing.
Your reaction made my day. The microphone toss and catch is epic! His interaction with the audience is lovely and his voice exceptional. We love our John.
‘You’re the Voice’ is basically an unofficial Aussie anthem. John Farnham is one of the most incredible voices to come out of this country. A lot of us get emotional just like you did 😍 My favourite performance by Farnham is ‘Everything’s Alright’ from Jesus Christ Superstar with Kate Ceberano and John Stevens from Noiseworks. His voice just SOARS. Would love to hear your reaction to all three of those singers!
Us Aussies are loving ‘John Farnham: Finding the Voice’ a docu-film telling John’s amazing story. It was just released this year. I highly recommend you watch it. I laughed when they showed his 1987 tour performance in Germany - they didn’t have a bagpiper, so they just dressed a roadie in a kilt & Scottish get-up & pushed him on stage with the bagpipes to pretend to play the solo for a minute. He had major stage fright though, poor lad 😬 Hopefully he has fond memories looking back now 🤞🏻
I took him for granted as a kid because he was everywhere. It's only now that I'm older that I appreciate how special he is.
Yep. So very true. Count me in too!
Agree
And keep hopes that John can belt one out one last time after his recovery.

@@MsS-J We are all going away like it or not. Some of us chose to live life to the fullest, while others were just alive.
I grew up listening to Farnsey (along with a few generations of Australians), and I don't know why, but this song gets me in the feels EVERY SINGLE TIME!
It is a shame the rest of the world did not embrace this gift of a singer as much as his home did, one of the best singers, ever!
I’m so glad we Australians appreciated him.
Whispering Jack was my first album.
I was 10, and I gave zero regrets.
I’m so glad John continued to be a proper legend.
Took us a while but we got there. Most people forget that there was a time no one was interested in The Voice.
The same could be said of Cold Chisel and Midnight oil who were imense live bands.
Agree absolutely about "Help". I have it on my main YT playlist, sung on "The Don Lane Show".
John is a treasure.

Add my vote for "Help". Should listen to the original first just to see how he changes it. Truly an amazing performance
Greatest voice I have ever heard and the greatest performer I have ever seen!!! This man and his voice is ridiculous!!!
Makes me so emotional every time! An anthem for humanity.
As an Aussie it thrilled my heart to see you enjoy this so much! 🙂. It is kind of our national song and we LOVE the bagpipes in it as well. Thanks for the wonderful reaction
I love this song but I had no idea he was this good live. Wow. It's flawless.
As an aussie fan here I am so glad you love our aussie anthem 🙌
John Farnham is one of the best things about Australia. He has always been a fantastic performer. ❤️
Thanks for your reaction
Hope you do more from this Aussie legend
"We're not gonna sit in silence, we're not gonna live with fear..." This song today is more needed than ever. People need to rise.
Won't happen sadly.

Apart from “ Help” and “ When something is wrong with my Baby” : “ please don’t ask me” and “ Gesthemane” from Jesus Christ superstar are my favourites. Also “That’s freedom”. Who am I kidding : love So many of his songs and have seen him live several times. So good
I have 4 John Farnham DVDs hahahaha.
Hes one of the top 5 best singers of all time.
Definitely Gesthemane and Help live. Both of those are the start and finish of any vocal lesson.
Always LIVE!
Watching your (visceral) reaction to this was an absolute joy. Thank you!
Watching Beth Roars for years, this is easily my favourite now… heart welling with pride ☺️
@@Dr_KAP As long as you put the scalpel down first 😂
Jimmy is a screamer - gives me headaches listening to him and also a sore throat by just watching him.
Same. I was 4. 35 years later I still love him. ❤
His backup singers have been with him for most of their careers (his and theirs) and when asked if they wanted to go do their own thing, which they're well talented enough to do, they always said "No, we want to stay with John"
Great to see an analysis like this Beth, hope to see more John Farnham on your channel in future.
Glad to see you finally covering John Farnham he's an absolute legend cheers from Australia Beth ^-^
Thanks Beth! I have been playing bass in US bands for (literally) 50 years, and I am amazed that I, too, had not been aware of John Farnam. Shame on me for being so provincial. Thank you for your coaching, and even more for your willingness to seek out and share vocalists from around the globe.
Thank you so much for the super chat! Don't worry, I wasn't really aware either! What a voice!
Yes I concur. Definitely needs to be done that song.
Absolutely agree on "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby". Would love to see Beth break down Jimmy's voice.
I mentioned about that song a long time ago but it never seems to eventuate ! There are three great singers in that song Barnes , Farnham and Diesel ( i believe he does the the back up harmony as well as play the guitar) .
Farnsie & Barnsie
Your absolute joy at discovering John is infectious.
Yes. As an Australian I was shocked and horrified that you had not listened to John Farnham before. And I'm also thrilled and delighted that you now have. He is an Australian icon. Humble. Unassuming. And a force of nature.
Outstanding song and your enthusiasm is so catching, the piper fitted in so well at that part.Loved your reaction and excitement throughout the song.
This working class man and true blue are the only songs I recognise as our national anthems. Advance Australia fair can suck my anus.
Aw there's so much I could say about this reactions, about John.... but what really got me was your reaction to the pipes!! Both sets of my grandparents were Irish and Scottish, respectively, and I ALWAYS have the same reaction as you!
I love that you can understand every word. Diction...enunciation...projection...perfect.
I loved watching you fall in love with Johnny, he’s an Australian icon and as loved as Steve Irin. I grew up listening to him and still do at 39! So talented, so cheeky, so loved. He made a whole concert when we had bad bush fires for donations, he’s an Angel of a person ❤
I'm 37 and heard him a lot growing up myself!!!
Have seen him in concert TWICE now and he is freaking AMAZING!!!
I love John Farnham. Please do him often.
Thanks for your your kind words on a great singer...let's hope he sings again❤️
With all that talent and music produced on stage, still John’s voice is the centre of it all, showing how prominent and great his voice is.
I love your expression and sensitivity.
He's English bro!
@@HeAhaBro - John Farnham is a British-born Australian Singer. He has lived for more than 60 years in Australia, therefore he is an Australian.
@@erwinzyx and he considers himself Australian. That’s what matters 😊
Has Beth taken a look at Barnsey??!
@@robsalvv5853 Barnsey is Scottish mate ;)
Beth and her “ there’s a bagpipe “ moment made us all feel like we all heard John again for the first time…… pure joy!
6:33 I just loved seeing Beths surprise reaction when the man walked on stage and started playing the bagpipes. Nice one Beth. I love this song thanks for sharing.
Your reaction to the bagpipe was so good! Love this song! My god that man can sing!
I'm Finnish but I have Scottish blood and I have the same thing: I have some kind of emotional response once the bagpipes appear!
He started out as a Plumbers apprentice. Correct, no formal training just natural talent.
Thanks Trent. Just finished listening to Help 🤯

he makes women cry every where he goes i took my mum to see him on his farewell tour and ive never been surrounded by so many crying women of all ages , truly the best performer to this day ive ever seen
His counter harmonies on the final chorus get me every time, I swear.
There are many famous songs in Australia that we all know but none bigger than You're The Voice. Put this on in any pub on a Saturday night and every single person there will know every word. It's a bonafide anthem.
John is currently battling cancer and i hope he comes through the surgery all good .
My thoughts exactly! This should be the anthem of the world, now more than ever . This man’s voice brings tears to my eyes, can’t be explained!
The greatest male voice ever in my opinion
Your reaction made my day. The microphone toss and catch is epic! His interaction with the audience is lovely and his voice exceptional. We love our John.
‘You’re the Voice’ is basically an unofficial Aussie anthem. John Farnham is one of the most incredible voices to come out of this country. A lot of us get emotional just like you did 😍
My favourite performance by Farnham is ‘Everything’s Alright’ from Jesus Christ Superstar with Kate Ceberano and John Stevens from Noiseworks.
