this is gorgeous. for some reason there is tons of footage on the internet with terrible footage from the c100 but there are a handful of cinematographers on yt and vimeo that do the camera justice and you sir are among them
thank you man! appreciate it. Yes, this was recorded internally. And I know what you mean. It all comes down to understanding your camera. You can do alot wrong when exporting or uploading a video on youtube too. I think most of the 'bad' footage you saw isn't that bad when you look at the raw clips. Before buying the C100 I watched so many shortfilms and Clips on youtube & Vimeo and only found 2-3 really good looking clips. The C100 can look really digital. Its alot harder to make it look cinematic.
What editing software are you using? When in Premier Pro try exporting in H.264, progressive, Constant Bitrate around 16-25 Mbit/s. There are also presets for youtube and vimeo. hope it helps!
The low light holds up really well by the looks of things. Wide DR is a bit overly sharp at times, have you tried the custom profiles Wide PF? It isn't as sharp and shifts the profile more to red than magenta.
you are right. I don't like the over the top sharpening of Wide DR either. I tried to make a custom profile with Wide DR but as you mentioned the colors become weird. One day another cameraman at a event who also had the C100 Mark II gave me a custom profile that looked like a more saturated Wide DR but with sharpness at 0. I use that now whenever I need to shoot something colorful and dont have to grade it. But for all other things I stick to cinema log. Still looking for the perfekt solution though...
Lintaro Hopf I too am still looking for that perfect solution. I don't think I'll ever find it but I remain hopeful. Have you found any difference in using mp4 over avchd?
Good question... I find them to be equal in terms of image quality. AVCHD gives you better Audio if you are using an external Mic. But I use Mp4 for almost everything. AVCHD also does apear to be a bit less sharp in the details. It looks like fine scan lines. In combination with an external recorder like the atomos Ninja it's alright though.
Lintaro Hopf I thought the AVCHD would be better for audio. Do you use the face detection much? With my C100 it doesn't have that and I wondered if you found it useful.
No I haven't yet. I use One-Shot AF a lot though. I think you can only use face detection AF with the STM lenses from canon. But I'm not sure (I just watched y youtbe video and yes it works well with the 18-135 STM for example). I used continuous AF once for an interview shoot once. It worked really well. Unless your subject is not in the center.
Great video! Just picked up a C-100 mark 1 and love it. I uploaded a video on a low light test as well but it doesn't look as good on You Tube for some reason. Maybe Im rendering or exporting wrong. BTW You got yourself a new subscriber! Keep up the good work!
I thought the same way. But I noticed some color issues with Wide DR I don't quite know what it is but sometimes I get a really nasty color shift towards magenta in the highlights. I don't find that in Clog. Maybe it's just my unit. Also wide DR oversharpens the image too much for my taste. But I still use it alot for stuff I dont want to grade.
love to see someone who knows what they're doing with their colors! Would you mind letting me know what your process is for correction and grading from the Wide DR footage? Thanks!
Thank you for the nice comment. Sure, I don't have a go to method though for my grading with Wide DR. I'm usually shooting with Cinema Log most of the time. But for this Clip all I really did was changing some values in Lumetri Color in Premiere Pro. Correcting the highlights, contrast, saturation, white balance... And usually after that I apply a film preset from Magic Bullet Suite (magic bullet film) but with low opacity (because Wide DR is already pretty contrasty), so that I only get a sligth film simulation. Hope it helps! Maybe I should do a seperate video someday where I color correct my footage.
In editing, slice the footage at the point where you want it to slow down. Keep the first part at normal speed & then on the second part where you just sliced, slow down the speed by 50%.
Hey Lintaro, this is beautiful, adore your work. I need a bit of help, I'm considering buying either C100 or C100 Mark II would you say that Mark II is a much better investment? Thanks, Fenn
Hi Fenn! If you can afford the extra cost (cannot be much now that the c200 came out) I would say better to go with the Mark II. The better Viewfinder and Screen makes a huge diffrence. And you can record in the convenient MP4 format and shoot 60p slow motion. I think the bit rate is also a bit better... Hope that helps! best, Lintaro
OMG i was trying to find just one or two videos to prove the c100 could look like the 4k videos. Yours is it. hope to find at least one more now. Mind if i ask what you shot in? lens? did you use log? 24p? 30p?
That's a good question - I think it's really about what you need. The 1dx mkii delivers some wonderful 120 fps slowmotion in 1080 and 60 fps in 4k, where as the c100 mkii only has 60 fps in 1080. However the c100 has built in nd-filters, which I really liked, when I used it a couple of weeks ago, to maintain a shallow depth of field. I'm not sure if the 1dx has zebra and peaking, but the c100 does, which also helps a bit. So if you don't mind not having 4k and high frame rates I think the c100 mkii definitely would work out for you, if you have some experience with cameras. And if you really need the specs of the 1dx mkii, that's your way to go :) I hope this can help you :)
Hi, this film is fabulous! Congrats - it seems that you use very well your camera. I'll be using the C100 Mark II very soon, in a documentary project where there are many interviews indoors, at people's houses. We will use some artificial light, but mainly natural... It seems that recording internally (AVCHD or Mp4) doesn't present many issues (there are so many out there against it, though... always wanting the ProRes). Would you use an external recorder for a better codec? From your excellent video, I see no need, frankly - great performance. Also, using mostly the 24-105mm lens, and thinking of WDR as profile for this project, or would you suggest the C-log instead? Any other lenses? And, how do you reduce the noise in higher ISOs? Thank you, Lintaro!
Nice shots ! But be careful : your clips are interlaced ! That's one of the main defaults to know about this cam... You'll love even more your C100 after setting the field priority to "progressive" in your NLE, i promess ! :)
I just noticed you are right! But I checked my raw footage and it was not interlaced and looked clean. I must have done something wrong with the export settings. I usually always shoot and export in progressive. I couldn't find anything in the camera menu so I did a bit of research on google and found out how to reinterpret interlaced c100 footage to progressive. And I had one incident where I shot with an atomos recorder and i accidently recorded everything interlaced. Good to know that I can now fix it afterwards. So thank you for your comment! :)
Yeah I know it's one of the downsides of the lovely C100 (same problem with the Mk I ) : when playing clips with VLC or Quicktime, image is fine and progressive. But once imported in NLE like FCPX / 7 or Premiere, we have to switch the field priority cause the software have troubles recognizing them as true progressive (because they are not, C100 can only be set to "25/30psf"). I found there are many solutions to fix it : in my case, editing with FCPX, waiting for all clips to be imported before doing anything in the software, then i select every shot and set the field to progressive in the info tab. After that, every shot is 25p (as i wanted) in a progressive project. Maybe it'll work for you =) What software are you using?
interesting to hear that. I edit with Premier Pro and I never had that issue before. I noticed this issue when shooting with the Mark I but I since I have the Mk II I shoot MP4 internal and Prores external via a atomos recorder. Only when I switch to AVCHD internally I get interlaced footage with nasty scan lines sometimes... But your method works in premier as well! I had to edit a corporate film a month ago and it was all interlaced footage and i thought I messed up and there is no fix for it. I already delivered it and the client didn't noticed it, but good to know that I can fix it next time : )
Hi Benoit - We had a problem on a shoot with the settings you suggest and found that there were 'issues' with setting the C100 to 24.97 with LED lights. Corrections on speed could not find any range to get rid of rising bar effects on the screen while setting 25 sorted it and no phasing or 'rising bars' issues. Have you tested this? Love to know your experiences if you are still watching. This is the reason I love using Arri lighting so much. Absolutely love tungsten. (Tip to everyone: Best to buy the last Arri or redheads while you can. A new Euro law wants to ban them. Good luck with any law enforcer trying to take my Arri's from me. I will put up a fight and film it. :-)
Came for the camera, stayed for the footage.
Dude totally.
Opinions are like noses. We all have one. I liked :52. Good composition and exposure for the reflected, moving lights. It won't lose a commission.
True! I've been totally immersed in the atmosphere!

Thanks so much! editing in latest premiere
Love this! Beautiful imagery. Even for today, the imagery from this camera never seizes to amaze.
The footage plus the music makes for an incredible experiential film! Well done, man.
those blues at night are beautiful
i love wide dr on my c300 mki, really stunning footage btw
Bloody brilliant camera work. Chapeau, sir.
Nice job - I own a C100 M2 and love it when I see results like this out of the camera.
Good footage. Still a fantastic camera even in 2020.
What was the lense/s used ?
You earned a subscriber. Planning to buy this camera before I buy the Canon C200/C300
well done mate i just got me a mkii and so happy that this can produce this kind of low light image
Yes, the c100 MkII is awesome. Love it so much :) congrats to the new cam!
awesome footage...! and the skating is good too!
Thank you for the inspiration. Beautiful work!
Thanks for the love! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great footage Lintaro!
Thank you Jake!
That is'nt a test, its a film!

Thank you I appreciate it!
I saw your low light video test also Ross Andrews Productions and it looks great.
Just beautiful
I use wide DR for almost everything. Clog isn't worth the effort for the difference except in extreme lighting situation. Looks great BTW.

awesome shot! what lens did you use for this?
Did you use a gimbal? The slow motion is excellent even at 60fps. Very nice comrade
Best C100 video clip I've seen on the internet......great composition and direction.Awsome work :).
Btw what lenses did you use ?
Thank you!! This was shot with the Canon L 100mm macro lens, Canon 35mm f2 IS and an old pentax vintage lens (Pentax M 50mm f1.7).
What did you use to stabilize or is it handheld? Image Stab on the lens at all?
At 0:38 how did you go from normal speed to slow motion?
This video is awesome and should have way more views!
Awesome work

Wide Dynamic range.

amazing
what preset u used for this film look????
I can't remember but it must be one of the first three presets from Filmconvert.
what lens ??
Mostly Canon 35mm f2 IS and Canon L 100mm f2.8 Macro IS. Nightshots with pentax m 50mm 1.7
What's the highest ISO you shot on?
I am not sure... must have been ISO 6400 or higher (maybe 8000). I usually stay away from everything above 6400.
Wow, there's like no grain at 6400!
what do you mean? there is mad grain
