    I'm going to be 100% honest, I was only watching to see the quality of the C100 Mk II, but I got sucked in. There was solid characters, an interesting plot, and nothing was too exaggerated or overdone. Overall, you and your team made a great short film. Awesome job!

    Absolutely incredible film. The color grading was fantastic. The story line was great, and I loved the foreshadowing from the husband of "I'll finish the shoot tomorrow" to what his dual identity was. Incredible film and stunning film and production. You had me at the edge of my seat in anticipation and I'd love this to be made into a feature length film!

    I think people hesitate to buy the Canon c100 because they don't think they can get their narrative Cinema projects to come out with footage that looks as good as yours does in this film.. therefore, I appreciate you creating this film not only because it's just a good story that is shot, directed, and acted well, but also because it shows what this camera is able to produce, without having to have been manufactured by black magic design

      Thank you so much! The C100 produces such a great image! I edited this film in Premiere Pro back in 2014 with no 3rd party plugins or add-ons. We just exposed the images properly, I color-graded to taste, and I added a bit of film grain. And it still looks really good, nearly 10 years later! Thanks for watching!

    This is actually very, very, VERY good. The sound design, direction, editing, scoring, everything is very well executed. Just a tiny suggestion, the entire end credits could have been typed out that would have been really cool. Just have your music while somebody just types out the credits, it would contribute more to the journalistic feel. This could have easily been a feature there's a wealth of potential in this. Bravo!

      +Mike Reda This is very well done. Who did the color grading? It looks very filmic; even for a canon c100. I feel like I'm watching a movie. Could you do a tutorial or talk about how you got such a filmic look? Thanks

    • @themikereda
      @themikereda  9 лет назад +5

      +TheResonating Thank you! I did the editing/grading. I honestly didn't do much as far as color grading, I didn't use LUTs or anything. We shot on the C100 in C-Log, I edited in Premiere Pro and basically just used Curves adjustments, some adjustments in hue/saturation, and I added a film grain to give it some texture. But I may actually end up doing a tutorial. Never really thought about it before but if it might be helpful, I'll work on one!

    • @themikereda
      @themikereda  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks! I probably did a bit more in post-production than I would have if we shot RAW, but it still worked out great and all the giant file sizes didn't make my computer explode, so that's good too! I used NeatVideo to denoise and used 3-way color correction for the grade.

    • @stephanes.
      @stephanes. 7 лет назад

      Yes! I will have to shoot in january and to edit in only one day until the projection of the movie. So It's great that I can have those very light files and pretty cinematic quality! Thanks for the tips, I will try NeatVideo, I just watched some footages and it is pretty amazing! Also, when shooting in AVCHD/MP4, you have to set up carefully the temperature don't you? And have the same in all shoots, or the image is easily corrected in post prod?

    Fantastic job dude.. I was thinkin about buying A7r2, but canon's colours are just fantastic. You think c100m2 is still a thing? I really don't care about 4k, i always have fun watching 90s-2000s movies because of movie feeling. I think more pixels made it so much real polished view. What do you think of that? And did you use any stabilisation unit? Thanks for making amazing film

    • @themikereda
      @themikereda  7 лет назад +3

      Thanks for the kind words! The C100 was great for us, and we're really excited about the newly announced C200. Canon's colors are just SO much better than Sony's colors. My production company uses an a7Sii and we love it because it's great in low light, has the flexibility of 4K and good 120fps slow motion, but we spend way too much time color correcting. I highly recommend the C100 or the C100ii if you're still looking. We didn't use any stabilization except for a tripod and a homemade dolly track with PVC pipes!

    What did you use for audio and lighting?

    • @themikereda
      @themikereda  9 месяцев назад +1

      We made this back in 2015 so I think the lighting was done with an Arri tungsten kit. Hot lights, no LEDs. And for sound I don't know what mic we used but I think it was a RODE NTG straight into a Zoom H4n recorder.

    Woah. I'm looking to buy a c100 ii. I am curious what lenses you used, audio, and how the hell you made this look like Hollywood. Wow!! Seriously. Please give some details ;)

    • @MexicanMovie
      @MexicanMovie 8 лет назад

      The lenses are listed up above. The C100 is very cinematic and color grading in the free version of Davinci Resolve 12.5.4 will be more than sufficient. My guess is that audio was recorded both on the C100 and using a boom pole to an audio recorder with shotgun mic and synced up in post.

    • @MexicanMovie
      @MexicanMovie 8 лет назад +1

      and I just noticed he described his color grading down below to Bronner Media in case you're interested.

    • @themikereda
      @themikereda  8 лет назад +4

      Hey Jason thanks for the kind comments! We used the Canon C100 (first generation), and we used Canon 24-70mm 2.8 and Canon 50mm 1.4 lenses. I edited in Adobe Premiere and didn't use any color LUTs for color grading. In fact, I didn't even know what a LUT was at that time. I basically just used curves to manipulate the contrast, and then I adjusted saturation as-needed shot by shot. As for sound, I can't take credit for that. One of my friends is a sound mixer/boom operator and he took care of us. But as wakeup1986 mentions below, DaVinci Resolve is a great program for color correcting, but since I've always used Premiere, I stuck with what I know! Hope that helps.

    • @KaceyBaker-go2cr
      @KaceyBaker-go2cr 8 лет назад +2

      I can not believe you achieved this cinematic quality with just curves and saturation based, just proves the c100m2 can look cinematic in the right hands. Can i ask if you fused over lighting or was a lot of it practical lights? I think you'd be surprised to know that I just purchased this camera after seeing this, you pursuaded me into keeping budget low for high quality, as I see 100's of you tubers and indie film makers with their fancy 4.5k red cameras who still don't produce a picture this good and their footage looks i-phoney or 5Dish. I wish I had been on set lol .. congrats and thanks for helping me come to the conclusion that 3k, 4k up to 8k really simply isn't needed for early career indie film making.

    • @themikereda
      @themikereda  8 лет назад +2

      I agree! It doesn't matter how many K you have (although, added flexibility IS nice to have), but if you know how to light and compose a shot, you can get incredibly cinematic footage with a "budget-friendly" camera. We did use lights, but they weren't very high quality. Some cheap softbox lights from Amazon and we did have a few 1K fresnel lights that we used occasionally, but we tried to make use of whatever natural light we had, and then add a little bit extra with our lights. I can tell you it wasn't anything fancy! Good luck with your new purchase, have fun!

  • @dayboyy24
    @dayboyy24 8 лет назад +3

    Sorry if this comes off as ignorant but I'm sort of just getting into this stuff. I saw you filmed with two separate lenses, which one would work better for low light?? I'm looking to rent a c100 for a project i'm working on and pretty much the whole video would be shot in low light. Also I noticed between the two lenses one is like double the cost of the other, does it (the 24-70mm) have better picture quality than the other one?? Why is the cost difference so drastic?
    Also, on a less technical note, this short film was amazing. I was truly shocked at the end.

    • @themikereda
      @themikereda  8 лет назад +5

      +davonblain Thanks for the comment! No worries at all, I was asking the same questions just a few years ago. The 24-70mm is a great lens; it's very sharp and it allows you to shoot wide (24mm) and zoomed-in at 70mm, and has really high-quality glass, which is why it's so expensive. It does well in low light because the aperture opens to f/2.8 but the 50mm lens opens to f/1.4 which lets in a lot more light. The 50mm probably has better-quality glass, but at f/1.4 it is hard to maintain focus because the depth of field is so shallow. And the other downside to the 50mm is that you can only shoot at 50mm, you can't zoom in or out. So the best lens depends on what you're shooting, but I shoot almost everything with the 24-70mm and it works perfectly for me. You can also push the ISO on the C100 up to nearly 4000 before the image gets TOO grainy. That will also help in a low-light setting. Also, I would highly recommend renting through LensRentals.com because they have a LOT of gear to rent, and the prices are great. Hope that helps!

I'm looking to create cinematic images, not necessarily documentaries.. that being said, looking at this film and seeing that it was created with the mark 1, I think that is enough to convince me to buy that camera, even now in 2022,.... despite many people describing the Mark 1 as a great documentary camera, this that you've created is really nothing short of cinematic.. meantime, amazingly, in 2022, the c100 mark one can be found on sale, used, in some cases for prices like $680

    • @themikereda
      @themikereda  2 года назад +1

      It really is a great camera, one of my favorites. Now 7 years later I definitely see some of its limitations by not shooting 4K and still being an 8-bit camera (although newer models might have been updated? Can’t say for sure) but for the price, it’s absolutely fantastic. I will say, I spent a LOT of time color grading this, but the fact that the image still looks so clean after all the coloring I did is a testament to the quality of the raw images. Good luck, hope you get some great footage out of it!

    Really compelling story, though it did seem a little predictable. Perhaps introducing the husband and wife at the beginning would have been better, maybe a discussion in bed. Have her go into the office and then move to the reporter character. The build up to the ending was excellent though the ending itself was very anti-climatic. Where were the bodies? What were his motives? Everything else, expertly done. Great work.

    • @themikereda
      @themikereda  9 лет назад +1

      +Max Palombella Hey Max, thanks for the comments. I think you may be right, introducing the husband and wife earlier may have made us care about them a little bit more. Great feedback! We unfortunately just didn't have the budget or time to expand the ending the way we would have liked. In fact we only had 1 "police" car, we had to lock off the shot and double the car to make it look like we had more of a police presence. We have a feature-length script that we'd love to film one day, and if that ever happens we will definitely be building on what we have here. Thanks again!
