    Your OH on Carbon 1 should be in the Up position. It should always be Up, down, up, down, and up (for the CH2OH group on Carbon 5). Other than that, the video is good. Can you do one where you trace the carbons also?

    This seems really difficult... Do you need to regurgitate the whole process of glycolysis in medical school? I'd like to become a doctor but biology is not my strong suit...

    • @AlexPantos9
      @AlexPantos9 9 лет назад

      +sydney yendys I would imagine so because I have to for my undergraduate biochemistry class - if biology isn't your strong suit you might have trouble. Please know I don't mean that as an insult at all! Just that you'll have to work very hard

    • @pimp.502
      @pimp.502 9 лет назад

      +sydney yendys yes you have to. I have my tetst in a few days T_T

    • @georgetollefson2370
      @georgetollefson2370 9 лет назад +2

      +sydney yendys If you would like to go to medical school, this is just the beginning. You must work very hard to make biology - specifically cell and molecular biology - your priority. This is the basis for all medicine. You can do it!!

    • @tatianadavidson4329
      @tatianadavidson4329 8 лет назад +3

      +sydney yendys Personally, I found that learning glycolysis from a chemical perspective instead of a biological perspective is easier. Biology tends to focus more on memorization, and chemistry focuses more on concepts. Maybe you could try biochemistry as a route to med school if you're interested in science.

    • @georgetollefson2370
      @georgetollefson2370 8 лет назад +2

      Tatiana Davidson great advice. Cell and Molecular Biology is also a good route to explore.

  • @bonbonpony
    @bonbonpony 9 лет назад +21

    This not only doesn't help, it actually makes things *harder* to remember for me :P Remembering the poem is as hard as remembering the actual names of the enzymes, and it doesn't help much since it only gives you the first letters, so you need to know what to make out of these letters, therefore you need to memorize the enzymes anyway, and now you additionaly have the poem to remember :P That's mnemotechnics gone bad.
    Better way is to notice that the names of the enzymes are related to the molecules they operate on, so if you know the names of the molecules, you have half of the work done. Just atach the words which mean the *function* of the enzyme, and there is an easy pattern in them: "kinases" are those which shift phosphates from one molecule to another, usually from/to ATP or GTP; "isomerases" are those which transform the shape of the molecule, "dehydrogenases" shift hydrogen atoms by reducing NAD+ to NADH etc.
    As for remembering the names of the molecules, it is easier when you know where these names come from. Then you can use pictures positioned in the cycle to help you remember them. E.g. "malate" is from Latin "malum" = "apple", so it is basically apple acid; "citrate" is from "citrus" = "lemon", so it is lemon acid. Oxalo-acetate is from the plant named Oxalis, aka wood sorrel, etc. So you can use the pictures of an apple, lemon, wood sorrel etc. to help you remember the names of the molecules, and where are they placed in the cycle.
    But if the Latin names are unfamiliar to you, you can use anything else which sounds similar to you.
