  • On the set of Alien: Covenant, Adam gets up close with the animatronic Xenomorph head that's worn by the film's creature puppeteer. Seeing this head animate and lunge, we learn how the animatronic operators work with the performer to breathe life into this 9-foot tall creature.
    Alien: Covenant is now available on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital HD. bitly.com/alie...

    • @BenJewer
      @BenJewer 7 лет назад +29

      The Jurassic World raptor heads were never actually animatronic, they were just still models for lighting/acting reference unfortunately, so always intended to be replaced. At least some animatronics made it into that film (the dying apatosaurus) whereas in Covenant I'm 90% certain all of the animatronics were at the very least massively augmented with CG, if not totally replaced. The CG Xenomorph flipping around the ship really killed any tension for me.

      Thing is it helps the human mind perceive things as real. If it's 100% digital it often misses the mark because it doesn't really exist in the space. If it's just a muppet it misses the mark in some respects, finish usually. The best way to avoid uncanny valley is to use a hybred of both something real and digital effects to bridge that gap. Or so I've heard from people in the industry as a student.

    This must have been before this rig was given up on. I spoke with Conor O'Sullivan on Alien Day, who was the creature effects supervisor and he described this very puppeteering rig, but said there wasn't enough time to both design and bug-test it to satisfaction and ran out of time before all the flaws could be remedied, switching over to pure CGI. You can see the obvious difference to what's on screen, due to this one having the much thinner limbs.
    So, this is basically rare footage of the pupeteering rig they couldn't get to function right in time.

      These videos are all from before the movie came out. So he's naturally gonna love all the production stuff, the sets, the suits, the monsters because all he's seeing is snippets and behind the set things. Which is pretty damn awesome. I'm sure he saw the movie by now but I don't think he's gonna publicly criticize the movie or something if he didnt like it. The diplomatic answer is: "eh not as good as the first one" Honestly it's not the worst alien movie.

      Stew Hvidston He hadn't seen it at this point. I think they got the chance to visit the set and wanted to get their money's worth, basically. :) Probably should have released all the videos before it hit screens, however.

      He seems to like the props and set design at least. I haven't seen the film but the artistry shown in these tested videos is really something.

    Wow that looks way better than any type of CGI in the film but you'll have to put in CGI or you'll be stuck with half of a xeno

    1:38 - More hints of human? The head of the old '79 creature had an actual human skull under the dome up front, and the teeth, while obviously not pearly whites belonged to that skull. That's plenty of uncanny humanity for me. The skull under this new one is decidedly monstrous, so I don't know why she says it's got MORE hints of human.
    (Don't get me wrong, It's a neat design and the craft is impeccable, but that bit just jumped out at me)

      the original is more biomechanical. This one is more just biological. As in muscles and bones and tendons ribs etc. Human-like biology.

      See, everyone says that, but the old xenomorphs did not have like Terminator arms or anything. It looked good. This new design... seems like the guy was drunk when the facehugger got him. To me, this movie is the worst. Even worse than Prometheus. Even worse than Alien 3. Because they kinda officially ruined xenos in this movie. To me, this movie doesn't exist, its just a memory of a nightmare.

      legooreostudios well in some of those shots where the puppeteer can't be seen, its more likely that the animatronic was only touched up with cgi to make it match the rest of the film.
