Bens journey as the 'second-best' starts here.this meeting occurs after Richard has tried one last time to recruit the now teenage Locke via the Mittelos Science Camp cover organisation and Locke has rejected. Ben seems here to have triggered enough interest in Richard from his visions of his dead mother to lead Richard to consider him an acceptable alternative to the apparently destined Leader Locke. So Ben becomes leader in his stead only for Locke to turn up after all in 2004, leading to Ben being replaced and the bitter jealous rivalry between him and Locke culminating in Ben's murder of Locke, and later Jacob- the surrogate father he always loved but received none on return, with Jacob favouring Locke over him in Ben's mind. "What about you?"
Robert Angier “He returned in the form of Isabella, telling Richard they were in hell, and left, letting her screams convince Richard the smoke was killing her.” lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/The_Man_in_Black
MrWilliamson9411 MiB can do a couple of different things with looking like dead people. They don't have to have died on-Island and their bodies don't have to be on-Island (Isabella, and Ben's mum.) Just to look like them, he scanned their memories and assumed their form. With Locke, Yemi, Christian, he's more corporeal.
This was supposedly in the 70s, I think. It was all the rage for men to have long hair. During the Dharma Purge (1987 or 1992?), Richard had short hair again `coz long hair for men wasn't in fashion anymore. 😉 (and yeah, Ricardo/ Richard had long hair in the 1800s).
i hate what they did to richards character. he was pretty much jacobs bum boy bringing people in/out for centuries and was never a player in the bigger game just a pawn. but his mystique was always the greatest thing, i loved his character so much.
yeah totally, i freaking loved seeing richard in all the time lines, never ageing, just being as big a mystery as the smoke monster or the island. then they freaking did him dirty by being some UPS guy for 200yrs+ lol. what the fuck, really.
He had a great backstory episode, don't know what the hell people wanted from it. I mean, all of the "mysterious" characters turned out to be mere mortals who were just as clueless as the main cast in terms of the mysteries of the island. Jacob and the Man in Black were no different in this regard, neither was their "Mother."

@@d0ntreply He wasnt an ups guy lmao. He was like a prophetic figure whereas Jacob was a godly figure. mib was the devil.
Like how young Ben is still unsure after he turns the invisible fence off and uses the rabitt, many films and shows would just skip that doubt and walk through more carelessly.
I like this scene because it's almost as if Richard knows that the smoke monster has become his mother (there is some evidence this isn't the case, though). Yet, later on when smokey takes Locke's form Richard doesn't even seem to know until it's too late. It's just strange.
maybe I remember it poorly, but does Richard know Locke died? if not maybe that's why, I think MIB took the form of Richards wife one time or another so he would be aware it can happen.
Yeah I think this actually fits to be fair with it not being the MIB. He looks concerned and asks did she die on the island, he says no and Richard smiles. Her mum saying she can’t come with him yet hints maybe she’s moving on in the flash sideways and has apparition as a whisper rather than MIB. So the concern drops from his face.
Well, the others, or hostiles or however you wanna call them, didn't need a turned off fence to get into the barracks. They could just enter trough the advanced tunnel system we see in season 5. Same probably goes for the smoke monster/mib. He lived in these tunnels and used them to silently travel across the island. If he had wanted to attack the barracks, he could have done so at any point in time, he wanted. I guess Ben turning off the fence didn't have any consequences, because the fence was effectively keeping no one out.
Ricky Ray EDIT: Never mind, I'm wrong. See comment below. ///// No because MIB can only take the form of people who have died on the Island with access to their corpses (e.g. Christian, Locke, Eko's brother). Hence Richard asking Ben if his mum died on the Island.
StapleBar it definitely is MIB Christian and Locke didn’t die on island, and Isabella (Richard’s wife) both died off island and her body wasn’t present. The body being on island just enabled him to manipulate people. The only time it’s formally addressed is when Jack asks MIB if they had to be dead before he could look like them, to which MIB answered yes.
Damon242 Yeah you've got a good point, there. I didn't think about Isabella. I didn't mean to say 'died on the Island', I meant to say their corpses are available, but Isabella's body wasn't on the Island and MiB took her form, so I guess you're right!
They had the magic ash that they could put around the temple, the cabin, etc. Brahm used it to put a circle around himself in the season 6 premier. Once they took over the barracks they also had the sonic fence.
Ben: "I left home because I'm sick of my dad bragging that he can throw a football over that mountain over there."
Oh.I understood that reference! Napoleon dynamite! Love that movie
Could have made state
Would have been perfect if this took place in ‘82
If coach would have put me in.
And crying about how he wishes he could go back in 82.

Poor Benno
When Ben says he saw his dead mother, Richard knows it was the Man in Black. Because he impersonated Richard’s wife on the Black Rock.
MrWilliamson9411 Wrong, MIB can only assume the shape of a person who died on the island, hence Richard asking that question.
Robert Angier that’s false. He took the form of Christian Shepherd.
MrWilliamson9411 Whose body was brought to the island, same as John Locke.

1:52 "Yes my name is Lost. Ben Lost. I Ben Lost for a while now."
I love how this is the only time in the series we see Richard with that hair
We see it when he was in Spain when he accidentally killed the doctor
@@tonysmith5566 and when he first lands on the island and meets Jacob.

I remember seeing this scene and freaking the fuck out. Tho I wasn’t completely sure Richard was ageless or was just using extra lotion.

Ben meets Richard in 1973.
Poor Ben :(

maybe I remember it poorly, but does Richard know Locke died? if not maybe that's why, I think MIB took the form of Richards wife one time or another so he would be aware it can happen.
His mother could have been an "apparition" instead due to the Whispers around the island are the people who cannot move on after death.

3:00 the music here is crazy it says a lot
So does the fact that he didn't turn the fence back on have any bearing in any of this or not?
I don't remember them ever addressing it after this, although it did get turned back on at some point it seems.

I know why Richard was in the jungle… he was looking for a decent haircut.
Boy did The Others got a glow up after DHARMA went down.
Was this all just MiB manipulating the situation? (Bens dead mother)
Ricky Ray Yes

Isabella definitely wasn't MiB, since Hurley can see and communicate with the dead. Although Ben's mother was.
It’s Alex Romero from bates motel

Did he do this cus Locke said Ben's name or something?
How did the hostiles deal with the smokie
