He probably knew that Desmond's destiny was to go on a boat race and end up on the Island, due to being rejected by Widmore and wanting to prove him wrong. I always figured Eloise got flashes like Desmond did.

Rewatching it’s clear he’ll do anything to keep Penny AWAY from the island, where Desmond will eventually end up. I think he hates Desmond because deep down, he’s scared of Penny meeting the same fate as Faraday.
Funny how important for Desmond that drink had been, same drink that was everything but important for Locke right before he was thrown from the building by his father.
The irony of this scene is Widmore basically compared his daughter to a small glass of expensive scotch. And then he washes it down like it's nothing. Such an awful, awful man.
Everything Widmore said and di was on purpose, just like Eloise was/did. She and him would have known about Desmond before he was even born with Daniels Faradays book she got in the past. Widmore and Eloise making sure everything happened. They were actually super serious characters.
If you think about it: £28000 (60 year scotch I saw online) per ml the cost of that would be : $28,000 / 1000 ml then * that by 10ml for a glass is $280 no? I think he makes more than that per month mate come on
Something just like this happened to me. My ex gf's father was a richa*sh*ole. He judged my family based on our neighbourhood. Anyway two months later we broke up for some other reasons.

Saw a 30 years old whiskey at my work and we charge 800$ for 1 shot so I would imagine a 60 years old would be way more
