I'm very curious how this application held up to normal use? I have a similar setup , laid in place with tucking and it is a constant pain because it moves so much.
I've watched several videos on household ideas, tips, etc. I recently purchased new slipcovers for my couch and chairs. I was just looking for ideas on the best way to proceed putting them on, and found your video. I'm so pleased! No frills, no pretentious expensive fabrics, several hundred dollar couches found at their "thrift stores". Ha. I've had the resources to purchase furniture, but I've always loved the search, hunt for my perfect treasures. I really enjoyed your informative, no frills, hooty-tooty approach to having a pretty home. Thanks! ☺️
Hi, great ideas! I'm just wondering how this holds up after use? I'm using dropcloths & my sofa turns into a disaster once someone sits down. So I think my technique is incorrect or I'm doing something very wrong!
Yeah--No! First those straight pins will pull out the first time someone sits on it. 2nd, all tucks come out when someone sits on it. 3rd, she obviously does not have kids because they would undo all that work in about 5 minutes. I know because I have sheets and spreads on my furniture to hide the ugly and it is a constant battle to keep them in place.
I hear that! Yes I have 2 boys as well and they will pull all that out more than likely.I am saving up for new furnature but in the meantime i have a few tears in the sofas that I try to cover. Getting regular couch covers for my oversized peices is next to impossible😭so i throw blankets over the backs of them and that's how i do it for now.but this did seem interesting.just not sure how well it would stay.she must not have kid's if her whole house is in WHITE HEHE.
Yes, completely unrealistic, I speak from experience!
@@KatarinaS. I actually know a few people with children and they have white walls, funiture etc....
I agree, even without small kids, we all sit and lounge in the couch and now my actual store bought slipcover has rips in it.. so I see where the stressed areas are in the cover
Very nice job. Of course a person has to treat the sofa gentle. Kids are rough on everything. I thought you gave some great tips that I will use. Thanks.
Could shower curtains be used or regular curtains? There's wonderful chenille shower curtains in white on white.
I bought a large white trunk to store my infant niece’s stuff in ruclips.net/user/postUgkxNuLbiXpLQ-mKH5NlyjrNe88hiCk2N3Cg , as she comes to my house frequently. For now, it’s toys on one side and diapers, wipes, and other baby care items on the other. As she gets older, it will be all toys. I had originally wanted a trunk with a hinged lid, but I was afraid of her smashing or pinching her fingers in it. This will be a much safer option. The lid has great padding in it and it is actually nice to sit on. It feels very sturdy and secure. Looks like it can be wiped clean easily. If it gets abused by her, I won’t be terribly upset because I paid less than $50 for it on Prime Day.
Thank you for your video. I found sheets at my local thrift store and covered my sofa and loveseat. They look great and don't budge when we sit on the couch..I did use safety pins instead of fabric pins. Thanks again!
That is wonderful news. So glad found some sheets you like that that it is working out for you. Whooohook
I used to do this with my old couches and then all I wanted to do was to sleep on them lol. Looks pretty and inexpensive way to match the decor. ♥️
What a great job Robin,I really enjoyed it. Not everyone can run out and get new furniture but everyone enjoys something looking nice.
Kind of late. your video is really helpful. Ironically the couch you are covering in video his our old couch from Speigels 43 years ago. Thanks for your tutorial.
So very cool..I will be doing this..I will make a small suggestion..if you get a pvc
pipe.. about 2" opening on end..cut to fit length of the couch interior..and push it down between the dear cushion and the interior..it holds the fabric down better
Les Lie Deadmond GREAT advice.!
Excellent suggestion!
Awesome idea
That is awesome! Thank you 🤓
It's a good temporary fix, but constantly "re-fixing" it every time someone gets up, gets old real fast.
Gus Cat I know right. My mother does this too. She knows when I’m leaving as I do the fix the couch dance
I have to agree. Just live with what you have until you can get what you want. Honestly, a lot of decent new furniture is not that expensive. You can also get quotes for reupholstering and see if it's worth it. Especially if the piece you have is good quality. Shop around for prices for re-upholstering. Some community colleges have design/upholstery programs and you may be able to find students to do it rather inexpensively. I had a loveseat professionally reupholstered in a dense heavy white linen. They did a fantastic job. It included the piping around the arms and back cushions. At the time I loved the lines and legs of the loveseat and didn't feel like shopping around for a different one so I just had someone re-upholster it professionally. You may be surprised at the price at which you can get this done.
@@JustOneDress I have cats , but sure if I wanted to reupholster furniture every 6 months 🤣
@@breakingbadheisenberg9703 You can teach your cats to use a scratching post in 2 hours. All you need is a squirt bottle, a scratching post and some catnip to rub on the scratching post. if you see your cat scratching your furniture you give them a few squirts in the face and a firm ''no''. You than carry your cat over to the scratching post with the catnip already rub on it and physically hold their paws in your hands and force them to scratch the post. They will be doing it on their own when they realize that the scratchin post is theirs. Also praise them for their good behaviour.
Any ideas for easy ways to keep the cover attached to the couch? But also easily removed to wash? This is a great idea. My issue is that it bunches / shifts when people sit on it so needs to be retucked constantly
I LOVE THE BLUE AND GOLD/YELLOW FLORAL PATTERN ON THE ORIGINAL FABRIC!!!👍💛 It has a Lively and playful look about it that feels like a beautiful spring day. The original fabric may look great in a sunroom but maybe not so much in a living room depending on your taste & decor. Covered or not the sofas are a great thrift store find! I to am a little concerned that if these sofas are sat on much YOU will spend A LOT of time re-tucking!
Do they stay put when hubby lays on couch. I bought a Sure Fit white covet..pretty but no matter how hard I tuck does not stay. I live your style and I too like thst white with some color. You are the best Robin.♥️😍🐕🎁
I have that white blanket she used and it's not cheap..I paid over $100.00 for it..I've had it for many years and now I know what I can do with it when I put it to rest..I have recovered couches and chairs but I used a staple gun. It works much better than just tucking in
Hi
.just bought 2hand sofa ..at fisrt I thought I should machine dye but now I have changed m mind after watching this video
Thanx this is the best way t safe money and time😗
Looks great as long as NO ONE sits or goes near it .
I tried a white sheet for a cloud couch I scored for free! It had some issues I only needed to cover under the seats. Well I then discovered to that Amazon has faux linen for like $20 and it matches the couch style fabric even more!! Just an extra tip!
The problem is that bed sheets look like ... bed sheets. The matelasse looks a lot nicer. You can also buy home dec fabric in wide widths in knobby linen or a polyester type faux linen that would look great, but ultimately slipcovers look like slipcovers. I found a loveseat in great shape for 75$ and had it professionally re-upholstered (in white linen) for 450$. That included piping along the arms and back cushions. I wouldn't do it again because you can get a decent quality loveseat for that price. I just don't know if making over old furniture is worth it, given how decent brand new furniture isn't all that expensive. And I do love white, too. My entire house is white, wood, ivory, and other neutrals.
Amazing job- but I gotta admit I’m kinda loving the print on the sofa but I know how too much floral can get too busy for that neutral look we all love. Your videos are so inspiring, Robin!!
Hi Robin! Loving your channel. We recently bought new sofas and I was about to get rid of the sectional we had. But now I’m keeping them the sectional is only two years old Since then Iv changed our decor and brown just don’t work. Iv always wanted white sofas like the pottery barn sectional but with four kiddos no way. But this works perfectly I can just take off sheets and wash awesome! I love your ideas thanks!💚💚💚💚💚💚
I got sofa with three pillows in the back. Pillows got flat . Any ideas.
Hello, I'm a retired Interior Designer and I've used all kinds of tricks over the years. I've also sewn my own slipcovers for the last 30 years, although the 2 Cindy Crawford and one PB ones I currently have already came with the covers. Anyway, I always hated the back cushions they come with for that very reason. They tend to get misshapen. To fix that problem I take the stuffing out and replace with all down feathers. I know that can get expensive because you need a lot but I scour yard sales, marketplace, goodwill, second hand stores etc and I collect down pillows until I have enough to make the switch. Many times I can find ugly pillows for cheap but the down inside is still useable. Down is not only sooo much more comfortable but you can also easily fluff them up without them ever losing shape. I rip them open and stuff the feathers into the cushions, which can get messy with feathers flying everywhere but they vacuum right up. Also if yours have slipcovers, the cushions should have a zippered cover underneath the actual slipcover and that's what you'd stuff the feathers into. After putting feathers in, i will usually just sew it closed at the end to prevent someone from accidentally opening it and have it raining feathers all over your house! Lol. I really hope this all makes sense and that it is of help to you. Good luck 😉@jadwigawarsaw5766
Wow you made that look really good and alot easier than trying to get this store bought cover on.
Great Bay Home has some amazing slipcovers. They work great with 1 inch furniture tacks pushed into hidden areas with wood. I only need a few. Also they don’t stain. They’re having a 30% off sale today. They are cheaper than other brands but better material and shape. They also have two piece ones. If anyone is too busy to make one. Great tips though. They sell it on amazon but they’re $10-$20 more. They also have dining chair slipcovers for cheap. I’m just a customer who loves them.
Really pretty room! Thank you for letting your dog hang out on the sofa. All of mine do !
And also my cat.
Thankyou for posting this. I can't afford a new sofa and loveseat but I can afford this. I'm a senior and this is perfect.
Nice. Very clear in her instructions, I will definitely follow her lead. The covers look very nice. She either has interior designer experience, or she is just damn good. Either way, I like this vid. Thx!!!
Wow I'm surprised how many people are complaining about such an awesome hack. I LOVED IT. It was a great video! ❤
Glad you liked it!!
It’s definitely interesting, but for those of us with kids and dogs, its necessary to be able to yank the slip covers off easily for laundering - especially with white.
I love what you've done with your Sofa's. Years ago, I purchased a Blue and White Striped Sofa Cover . It wasn't cheap. It also came with a little stretch ruffle that went around the bottom . The quality of fabric was very good. It lasted for years. But any sofa cover from time to time has to be straightened and tucked . That's just a fact . But when I needed to finally get a new one , I said "Never again will I pay so much for a couch cover.
I started doing what you do ...because I have several Cats, its cheaper and easier for me, easy to wash and if it gets stained and the stain won't come out ...its back to the Thrift Store to find some white sheets ( usually 99 cents to $2.99 ) .I have also used White Chenille which gives off a Shabby Chic look. I haven't had any real problems with guests sitting down on the Sofa and afterwards, having any major re-tucking issues.
So... I love your hacks and I thank you for your Video !
The finished sofa looks wonderful Robin, thank you for sharing your ideas. 😁.
Can I asked please if the material stays tucked in/under after I few sits on the sofa? 🤔
I'm asking because I have a blanket over my sofa and I'm forever having to retuck it back in😐. Because of my athritic hands and arms it is a pain😣, I cover sofa to keep it clean as I have a large dog. It may be the type of fabric the blanket is made of that causes it to keep slipping, it's a warm fleece blanket, I have tried using different kinds of polystyrene tubes/worms tucked down the back to hold blanket down, this does work for a wee while longer than without tubes.
Also my sofa does not have separate cushions, it's an Ikea sofa, is same height back as the arms. Again thank you for sharing your video 😁 take care, from Ruby 😁
It does need adjusting often, every couple of days for me. But I have found that if you are able to have quite a lot of fabric up over the top it tends to stay in place longer without falling down. If you are able to tuck the fabric into the area where the arms and cushion meets the back of the sofa that is best also. The more your able to tuck in the less stress the smooth part over the cushion have when you sit on the sofa. Stays better longer also. Not sure if that is helpful or not, but it's what works for me
Great video! Great way to bring new life to any sofa without spending a lot.
I love how you did this! So elegant and cozy! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the Fake Slip Cover Tutorial, Robin! You make it easy. Have a superb rest of the week. I am excited to see the treasures you have to share tomorrow. It's Thrift Store Thursday time! Enjoy the rest of the week, Robin.
Patti Shoemaker- I bought two king size quilts to cover my L-sectional sofa. Bottom pillows are attached. How should I cut quilts to cover sofa. Quilt is very light. Bought as they were incredible good buy and were red, color I wanted. PLEASE HELP
Very nice, thank you! Just what I was looking for.
Your recent video on sofa cushion covers is also very inspiring.
This is brilliant!!
yep, tuck and fold then staple....voila! No sewing and so less intimidating (and time hog!) Thank you for the tips!
I loved this tutorial. Do I do the same thing with a couch where the back cushions aren't removable?
I want to see an adult sit down on it and what it looks like when they get up.
Me too , this will need tucking in every day.
And our dog! He thinks that the couch that I intend to do this project with is HIS couch! Ha. ( He's a Siberian Husky)
@@susanhoward5479 every day?more like everytime someone stands up.i did this years ago
Donna my husband destroys my attempts at this, as when gets up, he doesn't just stand straight up. No he drags his arse forward, pulling out all the tucks. He also likes to lounge, starting from a sitting position, he leans back and lays down dragging the back down with him.
My exact thought!
Best cushion hack I, have seen!
Thank you thank you thank you for that tutorial I have watched your videos over and over when you have tours of your living room so I can try to figure out how you cover your sofas I have the same situation as you good sofas that just need a cover I appreciate it very much and look forward to more videos thanks again
thank you so much for reassuring I can do this 😂
Nice hack!! It looks great AND its an easy job to pull them off n throw in the washer 😀 You are looking great Robin! Looking healthy and chipper again! For so long you were battling your bug etc and you looked beat. 😔 Glad you're your old self again! Cuz I love your vids/blogs ❤😊
My mistake is that I use one cover.
I will get around to trying your method. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, Robin, you read my mind! I have wanted to make a spillover for my sofa for so long. I have seen many videos on using the fabric drop cloths, but I am not a great seamstress! Thanks for sharing once again😀! By the way, a long time ago I watched a show where the Dude made a cover, and then put a dowel rod(he said you could use an old shower /or ? rod) tucked in the back. He said it really help keep it tucked! Moving on to your next video!! Rita
Such a great idea! Been needing to do something with my couches that I couldn't afford to replace. Mine are also very comfortable and still usable but the taupe fabric isn't working anymore. I also love white and cream in my home. Thank you!
Really wishing my couch had removable cushions. I wonder if I could do this anyway? Thinking I must try finding white flat sheets at my local thrift store now. I am so tired of my very dark 10 year old couches.
I think it would work if you tucked it in along the edges as far as possible.
@@RobinJohnsonDecor thanks! Yeah, I really want to try this. I love your explanation. It looks lovely!
Thanks for the tutorial on slipcovers. I have been wanting to recover my sofa for so so long. I don't think I could make a regular slipcover, not that talented! You made it look easy, going to give it a try, wish me LUCK!!! Thanks again...until next video!😁
Good job,it really does look great! Thank you so much for sharing! I think I'll be using this technique. Once again, thank you.☺️
Nice work, but once your children jump on them cushions you have to start all over again 😣☕
How much fabric did it take to create this slipcover?
OMG! I been looking for a way to do that! You don’t know how much you’ve helped me! Thank you sooo much!
Love it. You just give me ideas for my sofa's . Thank you.
Hi Robin, great explanation of how to cover a sofa. You are my fave. I think twisting upholstery tacks would be great here.
I'm loving all of these videos from you!! They add a little bright spot to each day 😊
Love it and I did the same thing with my L shape couch and chaise lounge. Except I used those velvety blankets from Amazon. I matched my blanket that I bought some years ago with a new one and it was spot on perfect. It was a no sew like yours. Great job Robin!
Thank you. I brought my dad a cover for his sofa but the straps don’t hold it. And it slides. I’m looking at how to make it non slip
Great ideas, and very informative . Thank you for sharing 👍
Looks beautiful, but my family wiggles and squirms so much it would all come undone. But yours looks lovely. I enjoy watching your videos.
Wow!!! That turned out beautifully! I do love the print on the sofa, but the sheet you've chosen is perfect for your style and home! Just amazing!😍🤩🤗
Robin, this turned out great! I love the extra touch of the Wisconsin pillow! :) XO
So easy and nice thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for sharing! I love all white too, and I have kids!!! It's been hard, but I love it, even with all the extra work to keep it up. :)
What if the back of your couch is exposed (open to the room) and you need to cover the entire back too?
Im going to try this on my porch couch! Use Velcro to keep from having to fix it every time we sit on it. Thank you
I love this!! I'm remodeling my living room d.i.y style today and I can't wait to go to the store and buy the sheets & new pillows!! Thanks for this vid im super excited!! I think I was an interior decorator in my past life 🤔😂😂
You've done it again, Robin! This technique is so good and your sofas look terrific.
GREAT IDEA!! PLEASE SEND MORE GREAT IDEAS...I NEED HELP IN DECORATIMG IN AN INEXPENSIVE WAY, PLUS IDEAS ON EVERYTHIMG!!! LOVE THIS SITE AND YOU ARE SO SWEET! THANKS FOR SHARING.
As alway another great helpfull video thanks Robin!
Can you show us what it looks like each time someone gets up from sitting on it please. There is no way that its going to hold up to actual use!
I cover with quilts, looks great
Looks beautiful!💖
It turned out nice looking but you should've tacked in down with staples or twist pins.
Interesting but the back cushions on my couch don't come off. Straight pins would come out in a jiffy at my home.
Can you show how to make a slip cover for a hide a bed/sleeper sofa please?
This is a great idea, thanks.
Your couch looks beautiful! I want to do the same with my old, animal stained couch. What kind of fabric did you use?
Hi! I came across your video. Thank you for sharing your video. I liked your sofa cover hack. I did like the colors & floral pattern of your sofa. Its does really "pop" at you. 😊
I love this! Thanks for sharing.
Very nice. Thank you!
Thank you..I want to do mine!! You look beautiful today. I love the red, white and black top.
I love this!!!

It's not a hack!

@Dr. Christopher Johnson Hi Dr Johnson, nice to meet you as well. I have lived in CA my entire life.. I was born in SF and grew up in the Bay Area. How about you? What's your practice?

I am confused on cutting the corners. I have watched this a few times but don't get it. What am I missing???
Basically cut a peice of fabic that will fit from the floor on the outside of the sofa up over the arm and down bottom of the arm on the inside of the sofa
Looks wonderful! You make it look so easy. 😊
