** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Andrew Kall thank you! I'm looking forward to watching more episodes.
I agree!
It's probably more they struck Gold... If they can accquire you to enroll
Great channel only started with whiskey newbie
True!
FWIW, I help run the Irish Whiskey Society of America, and I wanted to thank you for the fair and honest review of Irish Whiskey. One of our stated goals is to get folks off the "shot of Jameson" bandwagon and more into appreciation of the wide range of IW available. It's videos like this that really help us in that effort, so once again, thank you.
So glad to be a part of such a cool community!
but i really like jameson. i'm sitting in in my living room, relaxing in my recliner, watching youtube, drinking it as i type. it's a hell of a lot better than the jack i drank in my twenties, that's for sure.
@@handyhippie6548 Ha! I also love Jameson. I just meant I wish more people would enjoy it (as you seem to be) rather than shooting it like drunken frat boys.
@@WhiskeyVault Glad to have you on board! Your welcome gifts are on their way.
@@InProductionsAttic i actually drink my whiskey from a shot glass now. in my twenties, i only ever drank it out of the bottle.
Love this video, we need an updated version in 2024 now so many of these distilleries have started producing their own new make!
As an Irish Gaelic speaker GLENDALOUGH is an Anglicization from Glenn Dá Loch (Glenn dawh lock) which means Valley of Two Lakes. It is a place in County Wicklow, Ireland known for its ancient monastery founded by St. Kevin (Naomh CaoimhÍn=Neeve Qwiveen) CAOIMHÍN was too hard for the English to say so the said Kevin instead.
I am an American of Irish decent, who is conversational in Irish Gaelic. I use the language almost daily on-line and I have been published in IRSH in the "Irish Times" in Dublin.
Great show!! SLÁINTE
Mike
As much as this makes me happy. The minute you explained yoy were american both warmed my heart and made ne read it in an American accent.
I'm so sorry. I ran out of Whiskey.
Keep her lit lad
Go Raibh Míle Maith Agatse a Sheaín!!!!
Mike
How’d you learn the language?
@@MrFredstt I can't speak for OP, but there are numerous ways. BBC North Ireland has a free online course in conversational Gaelic. Duolingo is another online option. I imagine a fair few number of universities have Gaelic courses in their foreign language departments. If you want an immersion course you can visit a Gaeltacht. These are areas of Ireland where Gaelic is still spoken by the majority of the population.
Gleann dá locha !
Lol. The gents are able to summon Irish men now... their power grows...
I added this to my D&D campaign. Summon Irishman
Love the 3rd mic guest on this one. His chill offsets the Rex crazy nicely. I also appreciate that he turns progressively more red faced with each dram!
Is it just me or are these two starting to look alike?
Instead of having a mini-me, Daniel has a macro-me.
I thought the same thing 10 seconds into this video
Well pets do look like their owners...
@@EvanCurrie LOL my thought exactly.
Rex is the Macho-me of Daniel
“Terry the Irishman” totally deserves somm status if he doesn’t already hold the title!!!! He is *NAILING* the nose and tasting notes on here...almost shocking Daniel *more* with each utterance he makes! Bravo, Terry!! 👏👏👍👍
Edited to add...perfect triple ding to conclude!!! 🔔🔔🔔 👍
You guys have made a Red Breast drinker out of me.
Side note - I have been putting a splash of milk in my scrambled eggs for 40 years and recently discovered that if you use the same small splash of whipping cream, it will DOUBLE the volume of eggs.
Classic Irishman. When confronted with going through 30 whiskeys, his main concern was what time it was...
I just realized I've just spent two hours watching two guys drink. And I haven't even had a drink myself.
I do it often...not that it's a good thing.
Sometimes I drink when I watch...not that it's a good thing...
Normally I watch these vids during lunch; today I saw this long anticipated title pop up and I decided to wait until I could sit down with a Jameson Caskmates (what I currently have in an Irish) and enjoy a whiskey with you.
Well done and thanks for following through!
I had the Teeling 15 yo Revival bottle. It was given me by my best mate for my 60th birthday. It was glorious!
I was in Salou in Spain last week. I found Jameson 12 year old Special Reserve in a shop for €40. They had loads of bottles of it.
I haven’t come across it anywhere in Ireland and the only place you can really get it is in a speciality whiskey shop for €135!!!
I’ve commented about this before but I honestly can’t get over how readily available Irish whiskeys are outside of Ireland when you can barely get them in Ireland.
My trip to Ireland this year really (re)ignited my love of Whisk(e)y. I like it somewhat before but it had been years since I truly drank it outside of cocktails. It’s also great to see Connemara and Dingle on the list. Had a last minute tour of the Dingle distillery and it was my first real lesson in whiskey appreciation
Long live the Redbreast.
Guys, it's now 2020. I think you'll need to do another Irish whiskey update for St. Patrick's Day on March 17th! :). This is one of my favourite videos you've done.
I was falling in love with ReadBeast when i was in Ireland and now... top place in my Bar assortment.
Readbeast. A robust literature
That Dingle whiskey sold out of shops here in 3 hours, I did the distillery tour for a stag, they’re on their third batch now and doing some great things with it, they make award winning gin and vodka as well while they waited for the whiskey. Sound lads.
Oh forgot to mention I’m from cork Ireland, about 2 and a half hours from the distillery.
Yeah they sell fuck loads of that Dingle Gin, pity I'm not a gin drinker.
Jack Simpson Dingle gin one of my favourites.
My wife is not exactly advanced in whisky drinking but has been a casual for many years. Second go around she now considers Writers Tears the tastiest whisky she's ever had.
I plan to give her a second go at Green Spot, my personal favourite Irish.
Jameson's has been my go-to for many years now. It's a nice smooth whiskey that you can drink neat or with just ice with no harsh smells or burning sensation on the throat.
Depending on your experience with stout, you can definitely get the imperial stout and normal stout notes in the Jameson whiskey. I disagree with Daniel, because it gets more complexity than normal Jameson for me. I get some wonderful and delicious coffe and chocolate notes with it. I absolutely love that whisky, because it feels like I have a Jameson stout, and it feels amazing! Try some stouts and do some Jameson Caskmates after that!
Love Irish whiskeys...latest one has been the Connemara...and I love it
I have been meaning to write and mention this since the first episode but figured it was already said but Writers Tears Copper Pot is very underwhelming and a tad watery BUT and this is a very large BUT Writers Tears Cask Strength is my absolute favorite and all it is, is a less diluted version and what you guys should really get your hands on. I would donate my collection of years but I love it too much. I will yell at Walsh since the need to share a free bottle of their best work so that the real word gets out. Cask Strength is the absolute best.
On the Irish whiskey spectrum that y’all said start with Redbreast 12 & Green spot. Which I did for the most part.
I’m a Redbreast lover. 👌
Yet with even just those 2 it does show the range of Irish whiskey.
Great episode💯
Excited to watch this! Irish whiskey is one area I feel qualified to be considered "advanced" in. Its where I got my start!
Because in North Carolina we have state alcohol beverage control that runs all the liquor stores, the only ones of these that are available in NC are Redbreast Lustau (as well as their 12y, 21y, etc.), Midleton Very Rare, and regular Green Spot.
If I remember right, you can have others brought in for personal use via FedEx. Just have to find the seller
Lol, my wife and I were just talking this morning about the various butter allotments on toast/bread in different families. We grew up on opposite spectrums, in her family they could properly smear, in mine that little skiff worked more as a crumb collector for the knife. So in the mood for a nice Irish whiskey now!!
I just came across this video and I'm heading to Ireland for 10 days in a couple of months and this is so awesome as a reference.. definitely want to bring some bottles back
Wow, Rex actually said the Tribe was wrong. I noticed the cut on top of Daniel's head. I can empathize. With Terry's Irish accent, I would love to hear him do a "Magnificent Bastard" call out just once. I'm sure it would be glorious. Tried Redbreast Lustau last weekend and it is likely now my favorite Irish whiskey.
I must be an odd duck, most burbons I haven’t loved. Not really my thing for the most part, but I enjoy Irish whisky. Green and yellow spot are amazing, though I enjoy them seasonally. Cold months I crave scotch, I love the smoke flavors in cold months and the fruit and lighter flavors in the warmer months. Now I need to go try some redbreast whisky come payday. After I finish my bottle of Laphroaig....
This episode made me finally open my Green Spot and compare with Redbreast 12...I have to say I'm with Rex on Redbreast over Green Spot
Try WestCork 10 bro
Having spent 3 weeks in Ireland this past summer, I wish I'd had a lot more opportunities to sample around. Irish Whiskey Museum in Dublin was awesome for the knowledge and humor of the guides who clearly love Irish whiskey. The Teeling Tour was also a highlight, as it's the only working distillery in Dublin. And the whiskey is great. Got a bottle of the Single Malt in my cabinet right now. Just wish I could get the Knappogue Castle 12 year back here in the States. Gonna have to ask a friend to bring some out from the Duty Free next visit.
Of those the Dingle is my fav. Fabulous. Shout out for Power's John's Lane as the best Pot Still.
What an excellent long one. A lot of good insights. The selection of Irish whiskies in NC is just sad, one shelf in our local ABC, so I just went for it and got the Redbreast 12. I think it is absolutely yummy, while still having a lot of complexity. I do think it has a long finish of butter and spice, tannins and fruit, but that's after a few drams.
I was really impressed with the Glendolough 7, 13 and the Mizunra Cask 13 that was just released. Every bit as good as Redbreast. Great show..
July 28,2020 - I’ll be doing an Irish Whiskey Marathon soon so I am binge watching / listening videos. I like this longer format but I understand 12-15 minutes works best with most viewers. I was surprised by the pronunciation of Glendalough.
I really like the Jameson Caskmates, both the IPA and Stout. They are good everyday go too whiskeys.
I'm enjoying your channel. I've a whisky tasting at a friends this Friday with a 2 bottle buy in at the door. I'm bringing the Irish to the table, So in my collection is the Redbrest 12 and 15 the Greenspot, Greenspot Leoville Barton and the Yellowspot. Trying them today and I'm torn they are all good, screw it I'll take them all.
It's time to hit the hay but I'm blending whiskys and had to jump in with the RB Lustau and Greenspot. How underrated they are!
Great show Mooch y Somm. Can you please do a show on which whiskys you have found to make good blends. It shocks people when I mix bottles in a glass, but sometimes it comes out GREAT!!!
Old forge bourbon, and wild turkey American honey complement one another nicely at a 70% OFB to 30%WTAH. Mixed and left in a counter top barrel for 1 month.
I discovered this blend when American honey was entirely too sweet for me. Mixed a two finger pour and enjoyed, so I decided to to meld the flavor letting it sit a bit.
I don't do the milk in eggs thing, but I use a spring whisk, you aerate the hell out of it and the fluff is unstoppable.
Hey guys love the videos and this one got me at the redbreast lustau, wheb rex says we need to sit down, i was in bed....but littarly started with jamersons, into the redbreast 12 and you called it with the next level upgrade . Love the videos keep kicking all the ass.
Redbreast 12 is hands-down my favorite Irish Whiskey.
you sir have fantastic taste
No Powers John's Lane Edition? My personal favorite.
I still think, for the money and value. Green spot is the Irish whiskey for me. Lots of History and I'm never out of a bottle.
Thanks guys I drank Jameson forever I can't wait to try connemara
Yes, I have loved bourbon for years, but recently Irish whiskey has been my gateway to much broader horizons!
Cheers Lads, nice reveiw of the Glendalough 7yr Single Malt Porter finish (actually 7 years in bourbon cask, and just under a year in porter cask. so almost 8 years old)
Love this video, and the most surprising thing for me was the elbow move, I gave it a try, and its such a solid move. I can't believe how well that works. Thanks, or in ireland Tanks
Just discovered this and I’m in heaven, but...but it’s early in Lent and I gave up liquor for Lent! OMG, I’m really down THERE!! Talk about conflicted feelings!
Wonderful time...very well spent! And in inclusion of Terry Dolan was marvelous......however.....my mental image of this iconic Tribe Admen has been shattered! I’ve always envisioned him similar to the Boston Celtics Mascot.....wielding a digital shillelaghs, to knock the noggin of an offensive whisky snob! Such a fine looking lad.........
T
One of my favourite episodes. So much info and will cost me quite a few hundred to buy a few of these bottles
I don't see many MBs talking about it but I love the Teeling Blackpitts -- one of the few peated Irish Whiskeys.
Moscatel (Muscat, in English) is a type of grape. Wines made with that grape are incredibly sweet and unique. It is so friendly that is often used as sacramental wine, at least here in Spain.
I'm going to have to watch this a few times to pick up on all the information you gave! Thanks for this video!
This has nothing to do with the video, but I just wanted to say that while I was watching the video I blended one cap of Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength, two caps Speyburn 10, and a little water, and the blend that came out is one of the richest things I've ever drank (: planning to buy some Irish this week!
It would have been nice to hear from the Irishman about the whiskey to get his perspective haha, Daniel was just so excited I guess😂😂👌
It sucks that I live in Chile where there's "no whisky culture". It's very hard to find interesting/special whiskys without shipping them :C
Luckily I found an online store here that has a great selecting and I was able to buy a bottle of Laphroaig and holy shit it's good!
Bushmills was my entry Irish.-- additional s Writer's Tears, Irishman. Hyde. Tullamore drew. Knappogue Castle. Singleton - i had once; but wasnt fond of... At the time.
I'm seeing double, and I'm not even drinking yet
I love you guys I never drunk Alcohol in my hole live and I have this feeling I going to be an alcoholic in very short time but I don't blame y'all as I said I love you guys and thanks hahaha.
U should review your own whiskey.
I would love to see this but i would not recommend it. They are selling a product. There will be bias. It will also affect their reputation as well. So you are at the fence. Say truthfully and people will not buy yr product? Lets say you are being vague in your reviews, its still a grey area where the outcome can be anything. Or trying to sugar coat and get caught because there are many good reviews and pros out there. It can potentially open a can of worms any other way. Wont know how people will perceive and act on this so its not worth the risk. The biggest risk factor is the audience. Its not worth the trouble.
I love how mooch and the Irishman just agree with everything Daniel says. Everyone tastes things differently but because of the necklace, everything he tastes is correct. They almost seem timid. Hahah. Very impressed with Daniel’s pallet though
Seeing the dance light reflection on Rex's face on the close up is magnificent!
Redbreast is awesome. The Caskmates Stout is a great daily.....but the new Slane is even better and a great price
yes...slane all the way..$25 bux legit
I totally agree about the Redbreast 12. I need to taste Greenspot now.
I have never seen any of the others
It wasn't the 12
This show has literally become Daniel and his evil twin.
Felt rushed, I'd safely say I'm not alone in saying that an hour long episode to truly give each whiskey it's due would have been a joy and nowhere near a burden to watch.
Stefan Ostman definitely, or 2 parts
There was an Irish whiskey you reviewed not too long ago and Rex said it was what he wanted Writers Tears to be. Can't remember the name.
Nice edit popping Terry's head back on his noggin!
I love Irish Whiskey!
What I love about IW is how there are so many variations, yet they all still taste like IW.
"Drink Irish whiskey with friends."
Well that rules me out...
That was enjoyable. I always have green spot redbreast 12 and jamo 18 in my bar. Love me some pot still Irish! Was not a fan of Middleton very rare but I’m just one chump
6:25 so glad I'm not the only one that does this.
I don’t even drink much , but I subscribed to this
You guys are awesome been watching your show for a month now I'm a huge Irish whiskey doing would love to see something from West cork on your show
If you ever have a chance to get a bottle of Dingle, grab it! I have Batch 5, it’s just delicious. Dingle is so underrated
Great vid
Got a green spot and love it
Unrelated to Ireland, but related to complex... have you heard of the Essence of Suntory line up? It was amazing. Peated Yamazaki, Rye Hakushu, wine cask Chita ....
I bought that Connemara couple of weeks ago. Real good stuff.
I’d love to see a tongue in cheek video series (a la donation day) where Rex is tied up in a chair in the background, so that Daniel can just wax and wane about the history and stories of the whiskies.
Love you both though, always entertaining, this video was super interesting and the guest was great!
In memory of your father ❤
Terry you magnificent Tribe moderator! It’s Ray! The other Ray that’s NOT the mariachi lol
You might like to try one of the Dair Ghaelach range some time. They are Midleton single pot still whiskeys matured in Irish oak casks (hence the name).
Yes! Thank you for finally getting to this video
Enjoyed this video. Probably one of my favorites. Learned alot. THANKS GUYS. Now I'm leaving to go get a couple new bottles of Irish whiskey. For educational purposes of course!!!!
I am glad you have that guy with you because I would of massacre those Irish weiskey names. And always great to have a Irish guy to get a 3rd opinion.
Picked up a bottle of Writer's Tears recently. The nose for me is nothing but green apple, however, that nose has nothing to do with the flavor, which seems to be as the fellas said, pretty classic Irish flavor.
Wow!
I was thinking about irish whisky earlier today....
And kinda hoped you would do something like this.
THE UNIVERSE HAVE SPOKEN!!
And it also whispered to me:
More REX(KING)!
It scares me, that I cannot recal making this comment!
The Glendalough is one of my favorites. On the palate I got an Andes mint. And I love the chocolate mint flavor
You needed to review the dump glass. I bet it was amazing!
Never seen you guys do 4 Roses Small Batch. I've only seen the regular and single barrel. I think small batch one of the best whiskies they offer.
The Irish Terry guest metions Dingle as "oily" - hats off to him as the hosts never mention texture, viscosity - which is key next to nose and taste.
Stout vs Porter: Stout is typically made with roasted unmalted barley. Porter is made with malted barley. Just a tidbit for the nerds out there.
I've made dozens of stouts and never used unmalted barley.
I'll edit my comment to say "typically" made with roasted unmalted barley. Historically stout and porter were terms used for the same thing. A "Stout porter" was simply a porter with a higher ABV. In modern times the roasted unmalted barley distinction is made because otherwise there is nothing to separate the styles. So sure, you could call your brew a stout but I would call it a porter. Neither of us would be wrong because terminology in beer is just as mixed up as the word "Rye" is here in Alberta. Cheers!
Well fair enough. I love my homebrewed stout / porter either way!!
I have really gotten to enjoy Irish Whiskey. I would love a review on Proper Twelve.
When he says PX but calls it Port and then Fix goes “Did you say Sherry?” Fix is hardcore man
Redbreast and Midleton are my favorite Irish Whiskeys.
A shame Power’s didn’t make the list. The John’s Lane expression is amazing. I would have liked to hear the collective thoughts...
It’s a gloriously underrated IW. One of the best value for money whiskies out there. The 12yr is in my top 5 IWs.
Been with the tribe since the modern rogues first video with the vault. I often forget that this is for the school for "serious" tasting notes
19:37
Rex almost seemed pissed how surprised he was by the spearmint finish LOL
