Did I Waste my Money? Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 Crayon Review & Comparison with Neocolor 2 Crayons
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 фев 2025
- This has got to be one of the products I have had the most requests to review! I resisted for a long time because they were very expensive for a children's crayon and I am very happy with my Caran D'ache Neoolor 2 crayons which are artist quality and cheaper than these. I couldn't find any comparisons of these two products so when they came out with the pastel tones I decided to bite the bullet and try them for myself.
I ordered the set of 18 Stabilo woody 3-in-1 crayons with the 6 new pastel colors from Amazon: amzn.to/3xGT291 *they have different sets on that page to pick from and the set prices are good. If you want the best deal on all of the colors you can buy the original 18 set: amzn.to/3tPP8cG and the 6 pastel set: amzn.to/39Hpy2S and have all colors for just under $60 currently. But yikes, these are kids' crayons and I would really urge you to try the Neocolor 2 crayons: shrsl.com/3ktbn if you are about to drop that much coin.
Blick has sets and open stock: shrsl.com/3ktau
Joggles has the best price on open stock: www.joggles.co...
Jackson's has good prices too and they ship worldwide from the UK: www.jacksonsar...
Features of Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 pencils:
10mm lead
Can be used 3 ways: as a colored pencil, crayon, or watercolor
Sets come with a sharpener and sometimes a brush.
Pros:
Soft water-soluble lead with write on most surfaces like windows for fun decorating effects
Can be used over other media for shading or highlights.
Thick lead
The 24 colors available are nice
Cons:
Price in USA: Cheapest is $2.39 at joggles or in sets on Amazon ranging from $16 to $40ish *This product is much less in Europe
The lead only goes 2/3 the way down the barrel which is deceiving as they are short pencils, to begin with. You are not getting as much usable product as you think. *To be fair tho, you probably wouldn't be able to sharpen them far enough to use lead that went the whole way down, I'm probably just being too picky.
Bottom line: These are nice but I would recommend Caran Dache Neocolor 2 over these if the price is similar: shrsl.com/3ktbn *You can set of 30 Neo2s for the same price as a set of 18 of the Woody 3-in-1 and the Neo2s are artist-grade, not made for kids. that said the woodys stick over the Neo2s and if you got the pastel woodys the colors are different than the colors in the Neo2 84 set so it's a good way to test these out without buying essentially an identical product. I am probably being too hard on these but for the price, I really expected more. I don't know what exactly but the way people raved about them I thought they must be magic. These might be a rebranding of the old Stabilo tones which were an artist crayon available in 60 colors but were discontinued years ago.

You are *the* *best* source of art supply information Lindsay! You're probably the only person in the history of the world who has ever taken the time to sharpen the Woody from the other end to find out the pigment length -- full disclosure as always ❤️
She's literally the love of our lives! 😁🌸
Yes, that one shocked me!! I was so keen on the Stabilo but that sharpening test disappointed me so much. I like to believe they left so much of the pencil without lead so that kids have some space to grab onto when they paint even when the lead is close to being used up but i don't know. If I bought it, I would have felt so cheated.
Lindsay. Maybe it’s time to get one of those super sensitive scales so you can the products!
I know this might sound bonkers but the size and thickness of these pencils/crayons is actually a dream come true for people who suffer from arthritis or any kind of chronic pain me included. Sometimes the normal size drawing materials can hurt our hands and to have something this big and comfortable in our hands and to continuing to make art. Win win.
My hands are ok but I love the chunky crayons anyway! I have Lyra graphite crayons in both water soluble and regular. They are so fun and satisfying to do quick warmup sketches!!
That is exactly why I like the Woodys so much more. Easier to hold, they dont break like my Neocolor IIs and they just seem creamier to me (easy to fill things in)
Such a sleuth, wow! 🔥 I do see how the form factor might be fun for some people though
I'm also wondering if there is less breakage because the crayon is supported by wood?
I feel like, for a kids product, the extra wood at the back is okay so they can use it up until the end and still have a grip. But the price hike has made it less of a kids product and opens it up to much more criticism.
Yes! If they were cheaper I wouldn't care!
@@thefrugalcrafter The reason why they so pricey is because of the kids "educational' gimmick. often products that are used in schools/ nurseries are over priced.
This was my thought as to Stabilo’s marketing ploy; smaller hands, broader grip and a longer stick. But seriously Lindsay, this is where I really appreciate your honesty and humor! How many licks?!?!? You just crack me up!
Being able to use it up fully is actually quite good! But still seems a bit like false advertising cause it looks like you'll get more color than you get. And yeah overpriced.
Kid says " mom i need more crayons"
Mom "you've never used all your crayons up so quick!"
Kid " i have"
Lindsay knows the truth 🤣🤣
Hello Lindsay, I'm working at an art supply store in Germany and I'm also responsible for the company of Stabilo there. Making orders and being informed about their newest products. It's really interesting to discover that the Woodys are actually pretty short. I'm gonna talk about this next time I get a representative of Stabilo. But I guess they wouldn't even know it themselves.
Thank you for your great review. It was very helpful.
also, they are not that much cheeper here ;) ;_;
Thanks for the info!
The set that costs $25 from Jacksons is $40 here! That's a pretty big price difference, almost double!
Hi Juniper!!
Have you spoken to the Stabilo rep about the lack of full stick of crayon filling the wood barrel? Also can you explain what is meant by the name 3-in-1? I get the regular use and the water application, but what is the 3rd use? I generally like a creamier product, so since I don’t have any other water soluble crayons & I just purchased these, I think I made a good choice.
FYI(can you mention this to the Stabilo rep, please?)-
I got them from Amazon and found the box did not hold up in shipping. Amazon is using unpadded plastic bags to ship many products now (without any bubble wrap or paper packaging) and my box came quite mangled and was missing the paint brush. However I have to ask if it was Stabilo’s or Amazon’s error? In the brush slot was a cardboard replica of a paint brush! So, I think it was a Stabilo choice as I can’t see Amazon removing all the paint brushes and replacing them with a cardboard picture. This would cost a lot in manpower for very little gain. I look forward to your response! Thanks! Oh I forgot to mention that I really like other Stabilo products!!
🤗🐝
@@thefrugalcrafter Lindsay I love the range of viewers you have! From all across the globe to professional artists & beginners to industry professionals! @@bconsilio3764 Hey Consilio,
I really did talk to the stabile rep about the half stick issue and she wasn't expecting it. We came up with the only explanation that the crayons were originally made for little children, that wouldn't sharpen the pencil till the very end ( its a very weak and lame explanation tbh -_- but kinda shrugged it off).
The 3 in 1 stands for the 3 different ways to use the woody. With little pressure the pencil is like classic wooden crayon pencil for normal coloring, the second use would require a lot more pressure for the waxy texture to come out. which would make the colors more opaque. and the third option is to use water to have an aquarelle effect. - btw you can also use these on windows and mirrors and just wipe it off again with a wet cloth.
For the art supply store I'm working at, I have to make weekly orders at Stabilo and never had an issue with the packagings. I think this is a major amazon thing. I will ask them (Stabilo) next time I meet them.
Hope my answers helped a little.
have a nice day
Jupiter
Thank you SO much for this honest and informative review, Lindsay!
The Stabilo's price has recently increased considerably due to the high demand... but your review might very well put a stop to the madness 😉😄
My service to the community 😆
I understand the "chubby" aspect for small hands or anyone with a grip issue. However, the price point pushes these out of the art supply for kids category, for sure. Neocolor 2 are also expensive, so I don't know about the price comparison per inch of product. I do have one set of the Woodys with the pastels but I won't be replenishing. Thanks for the review, Lindsay! You rock!
OMG!! Lindsay only you would get down to the truth in advertising!! Thanks for taking the bullet for us… always have and always will love my Caran D’Ache NeoColors2!! 🥰🤩👍🏾🙏🏾😉
Great video! (Love the song at the end!!!) I've been having the Woody's original set of 18 for 3 or 4 years and paid $23.88 for them. Prices have definitely gone up! I use them for adding color to mixed media and they work great. Derwent Inktense pencils also work great. But if I ever want something for detailed watercolor, I think the Neocolor 2 is the way to go! Thanks for taking one for the team! Janet 💕
PS - the excess wood at the base is to be able to hold onto it once it's sharpened all the way down. Although, it will take a LONG time to get all the way down to the end of the lead.
I can barely draw a stick figure, but I love watching Lindsay doing anything with art supplies!!
I concur. Love watching Lindsay. She's taught me so much.❤
I love this comment! She is a joy to watch and listen to!
me too!! i try though! i enjoy watching how creative artists are it always amazes me!
Drawing is a skill like any other; it's not a magic trick. If you wanted to learn to draw, you totally could. You just need to put in the time and practice.
Many people think they're incapable of drawing because the last age at which they took it seriously and did it regularly was 6-8. If you had stopped writing or reading at that age, you wouldn't be any better than a 6-8-year-old child at writing or reading, either.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'll give it a try.
Thanks so much for comparing these products Lindsay. Your waffling is too funny, trying so hard to be fair and unbiased. I can see where both have their uses. The biggest difference to me is the shine vs. matte finish, I prefer matte. I have the 84 set of Neocolor II thanks to your review, and others. Got them for around $100 a couple of Christmases ago, such a deal! I've never looked back or regretted this purchase, such a versatile and high quality product. Lindsay, you are my number one source for art supply reviews I can trust, thanks for all you do for this community. You are a RUclips Treasure. They should have awards!🤩
I’ve enjoyed these in the past, but decluttered them awhile ago when I got my larger set of Caran d’ache neocolor 2’s. I am excited by the new pastel tones! Thank you for exploring exactly how much product is in the Woody’s! I’ve always wondered about that. I’m disappointed in the results that you found. I may still get some pastel tones but will skip repurchasing the rest of them.
Excellent fair review Lindsay. I had bought the Stabilos based on seeing the mixed media work Maremi does. I have used them and had fun with them, however, I do not own the Caran d’Ache products. Very disappointed in the amount of product in each pencil. I agree it is misleading. Only you would help us investigate by cutting the pencil up! Thanks for taking one for the team Lindsay. You’re the best.
I can tell you why I use my woody pencils more than I use my neocolor IIs, even though the neocolors are objecively better: the chunkiness makes them more fun to use in mixed media abstracts. That's all 😄
That's valid:)
But how do you sharpen them?
@@artsy897 a special sharpener came with the pack I bought
@@alicemlovegrove yes but did you see how hard it was for Lindsey to sharpen them?
Does the sharpener work for you?
Have you sharpened them yet?
@@artsy897 yes, it's been perfectly fine for me.
I was waiting for this review, Lindsay so really appreciated it. I however, do NOT like 'dirty tricks' from manufacturers so they lost me as a customer for that fact alone. I know, I'm pretty tough but that's how I feel. Neo all the way for me. Appreciate it Lindsay...take care.
So many artist/craft products are deceiving when you look at the package. I might have been too hard on these but I really don't think it's a good value. If they were half the price id think it was fair.
@@thefrugalcrafter You were NOT too hard on these. I fell for their fine liner pens. Half the dang pack was dry! Not worth the money.
Hi, Lindsay. In Russia, these goods are at the same price
@@smisch7720 The pricing issue adds a bit of perspective. I knew someone who could get faber castel pencils (the nice oil based - I am blanking on the name here) cheaper than prismacolors because of how much she had to pay to get prismacolors imported, when for most Americans the prismacolors are the cheaper option.
How much are these wood crayons there and how do they relate to other crayon product prices for kid's items? Knowing they are designed for kids, I could see the appeal of having the wood go beyond the medium so they have something to grip (tho I wonder if it needs to be quite as long - there still might be some illusion of the real value there), but I was thinking - who buys 5 year olds $40 crayons?!
@@smisch7720 the word "woody" has an "adult" meaning here in the USA so im glad my video wasn't flagged or taken down 😆 that's probably what happened to your comment!
I'm grateful that you did this review and got to the bottom of the issue with how much you actually get with the Woody's. I've been thinking about getting them for a while.
So very glad to see this, I've been so tempted by the woodies, but that was a shocker seeing the limited amount of pigment. Over here in New Zealand everything we buy in is at least twice the price by the time we get them in hand. I think I'll save for the Neocolour IIs. I'm a sucker for watercolour crayons but it looks like I don't need both.
This was a great review. I don't know why I enjoyed it so much when you were sharpening the woody, it helped a lot. Thank you.
I should’ve watched the video to the very end! Where you took a utility knife and actually scraped away the wood and showed us exactly where the lead/crayon was. Taught me a lesson to watch a video all the way to the end :-) way to go Lindsay, you are so brave. Thanks for giving all of us good information.
Thanks!
Lindsay, YOU ARE MY HERO!!! Love how you whittled the wood down to get to the lead.
Omgosh, I am sooo glad I watched this before doling out $40 for the Woody's. I will get the pastel Woody colors to add to my Neo ii's, but dang, seeing that a third of the Woody crayon is NOT usable product ticked me off a bit and I hadn't even purchased them yet! I'm very thankful for you, Lindsay. Your reviews are always so thorough and you consistently keep cost as well as quality of the product you review in mind. You are always my first stop for art medium reviews! xoxo
These are a rebrand of their Stabilotone crayons. Those were marketed more to artists, and they had a much broader range of colors. I bought about 24 of the Stabilotone crayons (not the entire range) open stock about 20 years ago when I went on a trip to NYC to visit a friend. Blick, the old Pearl Paint, and New York Central Art Supply all had them. Personally, I am very happy with the quality of them, their pigment load and versatility. I have a set of Neocolor 2s as well and to me, the two brands compare favorably to one another. The old Stabilotones look pretty much like the Woodys, except the outsides are a solid color, not striped. I was disappointed when they cut the color range by more than half and instead marketed them for kids. I have not purchased any of the Woodys. I’m very happy to have gotten the first iteration of them. I like using them as a kind of dry glaze overtop of watercolor washes on cold press watercolor stock. Their chunky size and creamy consistency make quick work of imparting an optical blend of color with cool texturing. I also like taking color directly from the tips with a wet brush for quick small projects.
THANK YOU for your due diligence! I already own the original 18 pack and was THIS CLOSE to purchasing the pastel set. Seeing how little pigment is actually encased in the barrel was an eye opener. More Neocolor II's for me!!!😁
Boy, I’m glad you did this video, because I was eyeing these on Amazon, so I don’t think I’m missing out on anything. I purchased the Faber-Castell Gelatos and I’m trying to get the hang of using them, so this will be my jam for now. Thanks 🙏🏽 for the in-depth review. 👍👍💞🥰
Thank you so much, for the discovery, for taking one for the team.
Thank you for taking one for them team, it is disappointing to see how little product is in these, especially for the price. We appreciate your review of these.
My pleasure!
Thank you so much for doing this comparison! I have the full set of Neo II's as well and have been side eyeing the woody's for months. Now I feel like I can let them go except perhaps the pastel set. Great advice! I definitely don't think the price/value is FAIR, but I think logically because the woody's have all that wood that needs to be removed with the sharpener, you wouldn't be able to use the core beyond the point that the core stops, at least by using the included sharpener. But the price/amount comparison is an insult.
Same here.
Yes you are right. It still bugged me tho 😆
THANK YOU FOR REVIEW LINDSEY... LOL LOVE ❤️ YOUR DISAPTING THE CRYON PENCIL ✏️ 🤣 HOW MUCH SHAVING DOSE IT TAKE TO THE LED... ITS SAD THAT HAPPENED ... AWESOME PICTURE
Thank you for taking one for the team... a very good review! I think I will be adding the pastels.
Thank you so much for posting this comparison. I was about to order Woodys but after watching I realised I have a set of 30 Neocolour II which I bought years ago. I’ve just spent an afternoon playing with them to see how much water if I DONT want a watercolour effect. You just saved me a whack of money so thank you very much
Glad I could help!
@@thefrugalcrafter 😊
😳 Wow - crazy how far down the pigment started on the other end. Also didn't realize how similar the 3-in-1s are to the N2s (I have both 😅). And the sheen. This is why I love your product reviews! Thank you!
Thank you so much Lyndsey👏🏾👏🏻🥳I’ve not commented as much as I’ve watched you and want to let you know how grateful I am for you taking time and researching and carrying out these experiments as crafting products are quite expensive for making a mistake and not getting what one was looking forward to. You’ve helped immensely over t time. X🤗
Thanks!
Oh wow! You really went above and beyond in testing this product! Whittling it down w a knife! I’m so glad you didn’t have to go to the hospital!
This reminds me of so many makeup products- so misleading in the amount of product you get.
35:00 *correction* the stabilo DO have LIGHTFASTNESS on them. i can see onscreen, they use a star rating. like the yellow had about 5 stars on it. it's printed on the barrel and a little hard to read (i think it's printed in the color of the pencil).
Oh! I'll check it out! I saw a star but no lightfast rating key on the box.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich some brands are kind of annoying in that they put a star but you have to look through all of them to see what the most stars you can find is. There’s a Pastel that does this. Very annoying.
I honestly like the design of not having leads go all the way to the end of the pencil. That way you can use the entire lead without having to handle a complete nub. But that should be honest and it should factored into the cost!
That’s what I was thinking too..🤔 especially because they’re targeting towards children so if they were sharpening to the end they wouldn’t be able to hold them the last inch is wasted.. but I wonder why they wouldn’t perhaps fill that gap with something to stabilize the last bit of the crayon😂 imagine sharpening to the end only to find an empty barrel.
I agree- there would be no way to use it if the lead went all the way to the end, so I like that you aren't wasting product. But I cannot figure out why these cost as much as they do. They are SO expensive at normal price.
@@Skittl1321 Because they're European and not really distributed in this country. I did see some dupes on Amazon... not having either I have no idea how they compare.
Hi Lindsay - great informative video and in depth look at the woodies. I have both the Woodies and Neocolors and love them both. I agree that in Europe (I am in the UK) they are cheaper. In fact I just bought the pastel set from Cult Pens in the UK for £8 which is a good deal. Thanks for taking one for the team too! Good to know how much product is in the woodies. Thank you!!
I love that you cut off the back end of the Stabilo crayon to find out where the lead ended. That was quite a surprise! Very good to know...
Marta uses these and I've been wanting them! Love how they react with water.
I love Marta! She is so nice:)
THANK YOU, LINDSAY FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO AND ENLIGHTENING ME MORE ABOUT STABILO WOODY BECAUSE IF I DID NOT SEE YOUR VIDEO I WOULD HAVE WAISTED MY MONEY BECAUSE I ALSO USE THE NEOCOLOR 2 CRAYONS SO THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE ENLIGHTENMENT MUCH APPRECIATED
Glad it was helpful!
I have both neo, woody, gelatos and ranger. I use the woodys the most because they are not precious to me. I keep my neocolors in their box, because they break so easily, but the woodies out in a jar. They are fun! When I get serious I bring out the neos. I rarely use the gelatos and just don’t like the rangers because once you add water the color just disappears! Thanks for the review! I am going for the pastels!
Today, before I saw this video... I purchased the pastel set and the original for my 9 year old's mixed media art class. Now, I have mixed feelings. Yours is the 4th video on these that I watched and you are the only one who sharpened from the opposite end. Well, It's ok. Slow to anger and quick to forgive! If she likes these, I'll get the Caran D' Ache when she's older.
Very useful information. You took away my temptation since I already have the full set of Neocolor 2.
Excellent review Lindsey! I was about to get them but needed to know if they really were worth paying $75AUD, so thank you very much for your honest opinion and the extra mile of testing! 💜💙💚💛🧡
Glad it was helpful!
Hello Lindsay, I'm working in France in a Library/Art Shop called Espace Culturel which is one of the cheapest art supplies shops in France, the Woody 3-in-1 are currently at the same price as in US, in Germany they are not really cheaper, maybe 2 or 3€ less. So glad you mentioned Maremi Smal Art, she is amazing, her Polish accent is so cute. From now on, every time a customers will ask me about my opinion (Woody/Neocolor II), I will let them know about your video, so thank you for taking time to compare them and for the honest opinion you are giving to your audience. Have a beautiful day. Greetings from France!
Wow, my great grandson is really into art and I may consider those for him in another year. I didn't see the age group! Good review, Thanks Lindsay.
Thank you for doing this video! Mad respect for your honesty and manners.
I love your channel.
Thank you for "destroying" your Stabilo in order to show value for money. I appreciate your reviews - I think they are always spot on. Thank you for taking one for the team.
I totally agree with your review and comments! Thank you for confirming the amount of actual lead. That is significant. I have been back and forth about buying the Woodies, but I will go to the Neocolors.
You won't regret it!
I'm so glad I didn't just impulse buy these things. Because I really want the neocolor 2 after having purchased a 24 set of lyra that was on sale for nearly half price. I love love love the lyra crayons, so I know I'm going to be drooling over the neo color 2. And I had thought I might enjoy the woody set as much, but now I know.
Does anyone else now want to watch Lindsay do a whittling project / tutorial on her channel? :) Thank you for this review. I always come to see what you have to say when I am considering purchasing a new art product/medium - your reviews are honest, fair, and always very informative!
I dint think I have good enough health insurance for that 😆
Wow! Thank you for looking at the back end of that silver crayon to see how much head was actually in the wood casing. I own the Neo Colors II and the Lyra's and I feel like I have a beautiful range. I may pick up a few of the Woodie pastel colors open stock though...I want to say Jerry's has them in store open stock.
Excellent review! Thank you for taking one for the team and sharpening the silver crayon.
This is one of the best comment sections I've ever read! Everyone going on about eyeing all of these woodies, LOL!!! Thank you for bringing out the internal middle school teenage boy shenanigans, and thank you for another awesome supply review. I used the lira watercolor crayons and I've been super super happy with those. I picked up those on your recommendation and I'm so very glad I did.
😆 I wondered if the word "woody" would get me flagged by the algorithm 😆
Lol I was so scared for you when you were hacking away at that silver crayon, but appreciate your thorough investigation!!
GREAT review! Thanks so much for this valuable information. As someone who has been on the fence about these, I truly appreciate this review!
Thanks for taking one for the team! I am definitely very curious how much we are getting per crayon. Totally enjoy your review... and your ending! Hope you "survive" the surgery of the silver crayon. 😆

Fun and entertaining review. You made me laugh so much.😂 You helped me save 40 bucks and will go ahead and purchase the Neocolor 2's instead. Thanks. 👍
Glad I could help!
Thank for this review, Lindsay! I’m sticking with my Neo2s. I was actually shocked at the amount of empty space in that silver barrel. I sat here with my jaw hanging open.
Im shocked too (even tho id probably never use it up that much and I wonder if anyone has because I think we would have heard about it 😆)
Fantastic review, Lindsay!
In Germany, they aren`t that much cheaper.
The kids can also paint with them on their skin.
These colors are the perfect product for the times we live in, where nothing is as it seems.
Thank soo much for this information. Especially that you show how much crayon is in the Wood......
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the thorough review and testing! You are the best.
You can get the original 18 from Jackson’s Art for $28.34 USD. Amazon has them overpriced. Nice review, I have both. Keep creating 💛💜💙
Loved this review! Also enjoyed your comments that made me chuckle; especially the Where’s the beef coming from the vegan artist… 😄😉
Thank you, Lindsay, for this comparison. It’s so very helpful to know how to get value for our money. Thanks for sharing.
Oh my goodness. thank you for showing how far the lead goes down.. I have a set of these, and never knew... probably won't be buying again... they are fun to use, though, fun to hold because of the chunky feel
If i could buy anything id buy the pastel, set but if i could find them on a super super super discount sale id get the 18 set like you have if i did have them id used them just to draw on window at holidays theyd seem fun art project for holiday windows.. i watched this video twice lol thank you for taking one for the team and sharpenering the woody on the end...its good to know that your going the full line on the length of the woody well done its good know your product longevity i agree with you on all you say for now neo 2 is it........👩🎨✍🎨..mikelle art mom
The popsicles are beautiful! And I agree, the Woody version pops just a little more... thanks for another wonderful review!
I'm so glad you did this review on the woodies. I've been wanting to try a few colors...mostly the black because I see so many artists using the black for shadowing. But like you I am soooo disappointed about how much crayon is actually in there...yikes! Shame on them! Thanks for taking the time to make this video and for sacrificing one of your brand new woodies.
You can buy the Stabillo All Pencil in black, which is exactly the same as the black Woody, the difference is you will get a full-lenght core, and you are correct, it is a beautiful pencil for shadowing, writing, etc.
Yes, I've seen people use the full length black pencils also, I haven't seen those around either, but I'm still looking... thanks! 😉
I told you, you really weren't missing out on much ;) I agree with your assessment completely. Yes they're softer (hence the protective case) and that can be helpful when working over layers of mixed media, but I'm too put off by the lack of LF information to use them for anything besides art journaling. Yes the actual crayons have star ratings (1-5), but what do these numbers mean? No one knows. So incredibly overpriced for a kids' product. I just checked the price (I live in EU), and a single crayon is €2.52, a pack of 18 with a sharpener is €63.26. (EUR is currently equal to USD.)
I had no idea how short the core was!
I appreciate your in depth review because I really trust your experienced opinions!
Wow!!!! I’m just stunned after your sharpening experiment. That’s REALLY disappointing to see. Thank you for doing that!!
Thank you for sacrificing one of your pencils for us. That is something I will consider if I purchase again. I also have used neo 2s for a while however my reason for purchasing the Woodies was for their durability. My neo2s break easily so if I want to scribble on a canvas I can go nuts. The advantage of neo2s is you can save shavings when sharpening to use as watercolors. I also agree that my old neo2s from the 90s perform differently than ones I just purchased. Now if there were sleeves you could slide neo2s into to protect from breaking like a pencil extender, then I might not need both.
Thanks for demo.
Try a chalk holder for the neo2. How are new crayons different from the 90s?
Wow, such an useful comparison. Thank you so so much! Greetings from Slovakia 💕
I am so glad you did that. I bought the entire set before I watched your review because they looked so cool. They are good but is a rip off if you are only getting 2/3 of the product. I will not buy them again and thank you for your very informative reviews and your beautiful artwork.
Thanks for your review. Its always reassuring to know you'll be honest in your opinions, yet fair and kind. I don't think I will be purchasing these. I have one set of lesser quality that I seldom use. I have other mediums that I prefer.
One thing I just thought of - my neo colors break very easily in my death grip…. So my ideal would be to have them enrobed in wood as reinforcement! 🤔🤓
These might be good for you but if you already have neo2 crayons you. An get a chalk holder they should fit in. I have one in my sewing supplies.
Thanks! I had been considering these, but I already have the neocolor II.
Thank you for this honest review, I've been intrigued by these but I've hesitated due to the price. I have a big set of Caran d'ache, so I'll stick to them.
Thanks for sacrificing the silver, so we could see the length of the cores! Another great review 👍
Been curious about the wood casing so thanks for "taking one for the team." Sticking with my Neo II.
Hey I just found out, the number of stars on the pencils indicate the lightfastness scale!
Do you know the scale? Like 4 stars equals 10 years or 50 years? I couldn't find a key.
@@thefrugalcrafter Well, I couldn't either! Presumably 5 stars lasts longer than 1. I just wrote them through the website to ask, I'll let you know if they reply! I did find a blog called rozwoundup that has some old lightfast tests of Neocolor II vs. Stabilo Tones.
@@thefrugalcrafter LOL. I got sent a color chart... And they label them: highest, very good, good, satisfactory and sufficient. 🤣😅 So I have written back again, pointing out that my original question was specifically "how many years under museum conditions..." However, I'm pretty sure the stars are based on ASTM ratings rather than any testing they did. Let's be real. This is true of many products though, so I'm not sure we can single the Woodys out for that, you know?
It took longer than usual but I did get them from Jacksons - I loooove them. They are so great for the left hand drawing and writing. I love how they feel on the page, and since it's a neurosensory exercise for me that is great. I'm not really worried about the crayon not going to the end, since you can't use that part anyway. You could even say, they made it so you can use the whole crayon?!
@@thefrugalcrafter Never did hear back from Stabilo about how many years the stars mean! Not surprised though because as I said, others do that too. At least it gives you a relative scale. I did think of you yesterday though, when I was noticing the Pitt Artist pencils actually give years! 😉
Im waiting for my Neo II to come and in the meantime I found the Woody on sale...I bought them and so glad I didn't buy anymore because Im getting the Neo II. Love how you took that crayon apart. Thanks so much for doing that for us...weird why they are so expensive but I think its because of the wood? anyhow I bought the Woodies because so many on YT were using them...
The wood and the fact they got very popular with art-tubers.
It‘s incredible how the Woody prices have gone up since artists have started using and reviewing them! They used to be much cheaper in Germany (and hopefully still are!) and to me were always a kids‘ product - wax crayons that don’t break and won’t be so messy to use like the ones we used at school. I do hope parents will still be able to afford them 😅 I would not have expected the core to go to the end of the pencil, as you wouldn’t be able to use the last bit, opposed to a woodless crayon. But just like you have a preference to a product you have been using for many years, I probably want to defend a brand that I grew up with 😂 (btw they have lightfast information in form of *** on them, not sure if you mentioned that)
I didn't know that about the lightfast star. I'll check that out.if these were cheaper if give them top marks. At this price I'm going to be more critical.
@@thefrugalcrafter They are definitely overpriced if they are charged at the same level as professional art supplies like Neocolours. They are normally at home in the “Back-to-school” section of stationery shops, although Stabilo is probably always at the higher end of the price spectrum.
I'm still wondering how I'm supposed to use my neocolor 2 to the very end of it? Ergonomically seems impossible to me, also they constantly break so getting over 15 minutes of drawing with a tiny half neocolor is bordering impossible...I realized once I passed 50 that I feel so much better holding a chuncky material, but perhaps that's just me.
Wow! Glad I watched the sharpening, totally changes my mind about their value.
I've had neocolor for years now...I'm not sure who or from where I heard it...but to keep them from drying up... I keep them in my bathroom under the sink. This way whenever I shower it stays moist in there and it really works. I don't use them as often...because as u mentioned...they are so expensive but every time I do, they even have moisture around them.
Great review! I love my Neocolor 2s. I got the 84 set from my parents a Christmas 2020, and love them. I already had a 24 set of Lyra aqua crayons, as well as various gel crayon sets for myself and my daughters.
I need to pull Lyra out again, but from memory, I’m not sure I could tell any difference from the NC2 (maybe a little less opaque?). The gelatos, silky gel crayons, and KingArt (which look exactly like expensive Marabou Art crayons, although I’ve never used those) were disappointing used wet (in coloring book backgrounds), but they make BEAUTIFUL backgrounds applied dry with makeup type brush or foam eyeshadow applicator.
Your review convinced me I don’t want the Woodys, at least at U.S. price. I’m curious now, though, if the extended Lyra set would add to the Neocolor range. I see the 48 set as low as $48 occasionally.
I’d love to see you do an update to “all my watercolor crayons” video, as well as your colored pencil one. Maybe you could do a “what’s new, how your opinions changed, etc.”update without needing to redo the whole video. I realize those comprehensive comparisons must be a huge amount of work.
Great idea!
I am so glad you checked the length in the wood. Yeah that would be upsetting if you didn't know. Thanks for taking the "". Tha popcicles were very cute!
You are so very honest and fair! Thank you so much Lindsay.
Love when you put it product to the test Lindsay! You go girl!!
OMG!! 🤣😂🤣 Girl I love your determination and appreciate you getting to the bottom of the mystery of how much color is in those 3 in 1's. I have always like my Lyra WC crayons. I'm wondering if you have ever did a comparison between Lyra and Neocolor?
I have among others. I find Lyra to be 95% as good as Neo2. Very similar. Both are great.
Thanks Lindsey! Happy 4th
Hi, now that was so interesting seeing how much product is in a woody! Thank you. For comparison we can get the same pack here in Germany for €27, or at the current exchange rate = $28.70.
Wow! I would have never thought to cut the back end to see how much product there is! Only you Lindsay! That was very enlightening to see that 1/3 is just wood w/o pigment.
I understand that the shorter they get the harder they would be to hold on to. With regular sized pencils you can use pencil extenders. With these, I don't think there is an option currently available. But, you could use a brush or cut away the wood completely at that point.
Price vs value....
I never really gave much thought to the fact that they cost more per crayon than the Caran D'Ache Neocolor II's. When I purchased my Woody's the $30ish investment seemed reasonable and rather cheep. This was my perception. Because these have never been "Too Precious" to me...I use them! I use them often. They are always out, laying around on my table a few loose ones in my craft bag thrown at the bottom. My kids have always known that they can grab them at anytime.
Now, on the other hand, my 120 set of Caran D'Ache Neocolor II's never see the light of day. They are far "Too Precious" especially since realizing that they no longer sell the 120 set. My kids were threatened to not even look at my CD2s, much less touch them. (I'm ashamed about it, but it's true)
So...which is the better value for me??? Obviously, it's the one that I use and get joy from and not the one that gives me anxiety over "wasting" b/c my art is not good enough or CD2 worthy! How sad is that?!! I seriously need to reevaluate my warped thinking immediately!
This was an excellent review and I appreciate you taking the time to compare there 2 popular products. I'll definitely keep playing and having fun with these Woody's and work on letting my CD2s come out and play.
Thanks for your perspective! You have a unicorn with that set! I hope you use them tho, they wear down so slowly so you shouldn't worry about using them up.
Thanks, Lindsay. This is very helpful. I think I'll stick to my Neo IIs. :) Happy New Year!
I love that you called Stabillo out on the length of the lead! And the price. Hope they are watching, and can fix that, as well as release colorfast information if they want to be taken seriously by artists. I think NeoColor 2 are expensive enough!
So glad you reviewed these. I have had these for a bit, and was surprised at how awesome they were considering they're for kids haha. That said, I'd take my Neos over them
I don't have either and probably wouldn't purchase the woodies, DANG!!! That is quite misleading because one assumes the color goes on till the end!!!! Thank you, Lindsay!
I feel it is more like False Advertising! But, then again, the advantage of a "blank" at the end of the stick, makes it so that one could sharpen and have something to hold onto the very end of the color. In that regard, if it was stated in advertising, and costs were much less, that would be acceptable.
To stop breakage of my Neo ll’s, I place them in a hollow pencil extender, with the tip just showing. I also do this with a half stick, of my Caran D’Ache woodless blender. Hope this helps. 😜😋😉
HI Lindsay! So, you're getting a built in pencil extender in each Woody! ;-)
TFS! OMG glad I watched to the very end... loved your little parody of "I will survive"!
Great spin, you should be their salesperson 😆
I priced them when I was recently in Germany and they weren’t much cheaper, surprisingly. Thx for the review! Steph
Thanks Lindsay. I think the extra wood on the woody is so you can sharpen it and still have a hold on it to use all the lead/color. Look more like a Gelato texture.
