All My Watercolor Pencils! Let's compare and see what's good!

  • Hi friends!
Just a quick disclaimer, I have a lot of supplies, I teach workshops where I have to provide my own supplies and I review art products on my blog and RUclips. I am not sharing this to make anyone feel jealous or to brag. My goal is to hopefully help save you some money so you can buy the perfect supply for your needs the FIRST time. Happy crafting!
Watercolor pencils in order or appearance. *denotes my best favorite/recommendation. Affiliate links used.
    Budget & Craft Grade Pencils
*Pagos 72 set: amzn.to/3oOrQQ6 *Also available in a set with the 72 colored pencils at a lower per pencil price. I like both of these and the colors match perfectly. amzn.to/39BH44l This would be a great starter set. Full reviews here: ruclips.net/user/thefrugalcr...
Arteza 120 (smaller sets available, look for the EXPERT range) amzn.to/35JG5hq
*Note, the Arteza watercolor pencils were one of my top budget pics but they have had some recent quality control issues so I'd hold off ordering them for now. Also the prices have inched up into the pro price range.
Prima Marketing: amzn.to/2LW7tlb (lots of duplicates between sets, I think these have been discontinued)
*Spectrum Noir Aquablend: shrsl.com/2qcoh These retail for $39 for a 24 set but Craft Stash has them for $21.69 for the 24 set or $12.99 for the 12 sets. I know there are no duplicates in the 24 sets so you can build your collection as your budget allows) These are the pencils I use the most often and I have been very happy with them shrsl.com/2qcoh
    Artist-grade Pencils
Artist-grade watercolor pencils are available open stock so you can buy a couple of pencils to see if you like them before investing in a set or replace a pencil if you use it up without having to rebuy a set. Also, they should have lightfast ratings available that are trustworthy. Keep in mind not all artist grade pencils will be lightfast but checking the ratings can help you avoid these if you wish.
Caran Dache Supracolor: shrsl.com/2qcox These are not the top of the line watercolor pencils offered by CaranDache but they are pretty good. Caran Dache products tend to run on the high side but they are wonderful. If you are interested in their top of the line watercolor pencil you will want the Museum Aquarelle: shrsl.com/2qcp5 I have not used those myself.
*Faber Castel Albright Drurer: shrsl.com/2qcpa These are my favorite watercolor pencils, they are lightfast, open stock and still a good value, I bought my set of 120 for around $160 over 10 years ago and the price is still around that on Blick. Work will last done with these pencils.
Derwent Watercolor Pencils: shrsl.com/2qcpi These were my first watercolor pencils more than 20 years ago. They are not bad but there are better choices available now for the price in my opinion,
*Derwent Inktense pencils shrsl.com/2qcpu and Blocks shrsl.com/2qcpy I really love these for the color payout and the fact that I can use them on fabric and they are permanent. A really versatile product! They are available in pan format too: shrsl.com/2qcq5
Koh I Noor Mondulez: shrsl.com/2qcq8 These are good but come in a smaller color range and open stock is harder to find but available
    Specialty pencils:
Derwent Metallic watercolor pencils (discontinued but you can find old sets with the silver barrels on Amazon, the gold barrels are nor watersoluble) amzn.to/35JmG0m
    Derwent Graphitint: shrsl.com/2qcqg
Woodless Watercolor pencils (and watercolor crayons that are hard like pencils)
    Altenew: shrsl.com/2kagb
*Arteza: shrsl.com/2ikc1 (recommendation based on a lower price for equivalent products)
    Creatacolor shrsl.com/2ikbx
*see my full comparison to the above 3 products here: • No Waste Watercolor Pe...
*Jane Davenport/Sargent Art/Mungyo watercolor crayons: amzn.to/3nOQXRg (I recommend as an alternative to the discontinued Aquatone pencils)
    Dina Wakly Scribble Sticks: amzn.to/3bJael2
    Aquatone (discontuined)
*I also compared them to LYRA watercolor crayon amzn.to/3hH6tNF which are softer and waxier and I really like them but they are not what I'd call a pencil and also the Caran Dache Neocolor 2 crayons. shrsl.com/2pkyw My watercolor crayon comparison: • Chatting About Waterco...

Um's and you know's make you a real person and not scripted. When people sound scripted, or practiced, then I feel as though I'm just being sold. I don't care if you purchased with your own money or sent to you by a supplier. What I'm interested in is your honest opinion because of your experience. I've even noticed when you're opinion has changed due to usage and time you update the video with additional thoughts, which means you're consciences. I I love you because you're lively and I feel as though I'm crafting with a girlfriend and just having fun. Please don't change in order to appease the uptight. I want fun and becoming more expressive and fun.

one neat thing about Albrect Durer pencils is the colors are identical to the Polychromos, same colors, same numbers. So you can do watercolor pencils for an underpainting, then finish up the details with Polychromos.

You should use the Faber Castell more. The big investment is when you purchase the whole set the first time. After that, you just spend 2 bucks to replace the ones you use most once in a blue moon.

I bit the bullet and got the full set of Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelle after reading and watching pretty much every single review/video about them. I regret absolutely NOTHING. They are amazing and so pigmented but they are definitely different from normal pencils and standard watercolor. I was 99% sure I'd love them a lot so that's why I bought them, but if you have even an ounce of doubt I strongly suggest you buy only 2-3 pencils to try them out. Watercolor pencils are definitely not everyone's cup of tea. I enjoy that I can have the control of pencils but the finish of watercolor, since I find watercolor intimidating and I'm mostly used to normal colored pencils. This video was so enjoyable, I love your long videos!

Derwent pencils are made about 30 miles from where I live in Cumbria. The original factory was at Keswick in the Lake District, but they moved to a new purpose built factory in West Cunbria. I love Inktense pencils ( and I agree about the trays / tins ) and l look out for sale bargains all the time.

I've been having fun with the Derwent Inktense and Graphitint. I like that company, they are willing to have 3-4 different products in one market, and have them sufficiently different as to justify them all existing. Their workmanship is very nice and the pencils smell good, too. I'd like to try their Drawing, Watercolor, Pastel, LIghtfast, if they make it then I'll happily try it. They're still working to innovate and debut new products in the pencil category.

Just FYI the Koh-I-Noor Mondeluz come in 72 colors, and they match the 72 regular colored pencils as well. I have both sets which I bought about 4-5 years ago and love both. Personally I find both the color payout and the way they disolve is much better than the arteza and the price is comparable. I also bought the 72 Arteza when they first came out and was quite disappointed with the quality in comparison. I have several Koh-I-Noor products and find all of them were very good quality for the price. (Colored pencils, watercolor pencils, soft pastels and the pastel pencils). Hope that helps!!! I also found the Lyra watercolor pencils are good as well and also have the same 72 colors as their polycolor colored pencils.

Hallo, I am a little late for the comment because your video is 2 years old. So I don't know if you looked for information about Caran d'ache. But the brand Supracolor could be defined as middle range quality. The cheaper version is Prismalo. They also are developed and made in Switzerland.

The Caran d’ache Museum aquarelle really are beautiful, extremely vibrant colours and easier to use than Albrecht Durer, a little goes a long way. The range is not as big as Albrecht Durer, but you can do all sorts of mixes to get new shades. I like both; not cheap, you get what you paid for.

I love everything made by Derwent, even if some products aren't great. It has something to do with the feeling they give you when you take them out of the box, exclusive quality if you ask me. For some reason no other brand gives me this vibe. It's a pleasure just to hold their products. Also Lyra's Rembrandt watercolor pencils surprised me a lot. I don't have a lot of experience with this kind of medium, but they have such lovely colors, intense and vibrant, not sure about the rest of products you show here, since most of them aren't available where I live, but happy to see you test them all.

Thanks for the great review! I want a woodless watercolor pencil, and after your review, I narrowed it down to the Scribble Sticks or the Mungyo crayons (neither of which were even on my list). Arteza products seem to change, with totally different versions sold without Arteza making this clear (or seemingly knowing themselves which product is shipping), otherwise I would go with your recommendation for those.
You should look at General’s Kimberly watercolor pencils., and maybe try a set for review/affordable recommendation in future videos. They handle (IMO) so like Albrecht Dürer that someone who can’t afford Fabre Castell artist quality would get a very similar experience. Their set of 24 is currently $19 on Amazon (but I paid $16 a few months ago). Open stock is available on Blick ($1.44 currently). I liked them so much that I ordered all colors available, as open stock. I can find 36 colors, although 2 unique colors are called “yellow”. No set includes all colors, with some unique colors in small sets that have duplicates of the 24 set. Obviously they don’t have lightfast ratings, and color range is much smaller than the Albrecht Dürer, without color matching to Polychromos. I mostly use for adult coloring (I also got a set for each of my elementary school aged daughters). I still love my Albrecht Dürer, but as you frequently say they feel “precious “, and I’m more likely to play around with the Kimberly pencils.
I have them swatched and could share a photo, but probably easy to find with google search or Blick or Amazon reviews.

Thank you for doing this video. I’m just getting into watercolors, especially after your video of the painted cards for your mom. Even though I’m just a beginner, I don’t want to be disappointed by the products I choose. So after watching this about half way, I decided to go with the Pagos (72-color set) and they were $27.50 on their website with free shipping to me in Hawaii. Mahalo! ❤️

I’m mostly interested in the watercolor & gouache videos but I watch every thing you put out because it feels like I’m listening to a friend chat. I have Derwent watercolor pencils and Polychromos colored pencils that I don’t use near enough. Keep up the good work.

1/31/23... Love ❤️ your tutorials!!! Learned so much... I also learn from viewer's comments about their experiences with watercolor pencils! I bought a few Derwent and Albrecht Durer from Blick. Beautiful colors! Now I think I should buy a 36 Albrecht Durer set... perfect colors for me as a beginner in watercolor. Lindsay, you're the best! Thanks 😊 for sharing ... ❤️ A California Gramma ♥️

Hi Lindsay ✋It’s been a while since you did this video. But if anyone is wondering about the Spectrum Noir watercolor pencils Florals set (the only ones I have from that brand) here’s my take: I bought the Florals set at a cheap clearance price maybe a few years ago (I think SN still makes them.) I fiddled with them a bit and thought “meh.” I put them aside. Sometime later I saw them, sitting very sadly 😢 in my supply drawer and decided to get them out of the drawer and give them a good workout on some better paper. Wow 🤩! The beautiful and delicate light pinks and violets were some of the prettiest light pastel shades and fairly transparent watercolors; especially in wc pencils that I’ve seen. It’s hard to describe that certain quality they showed, but trust me, it was fabulous if you’re a fan of soft pastel colors.

Great video. Loved the comparisons and you adding the Scribble Sticks - heard they were fun. Thinking about getting a large watercolor pencil set, that first one you tried. All I have are the Derwent Inktense, a 12 pencil set. I like them but I do want more variety. Thanks for the comparisons! It's much appreciated.

The Arteza watercolor pencils are the ONE product I like from them. I have a watercolor pencil problem... I tend to collect them. I did give the Arteza ones away when I downsized my art space to things I knew I would use. However, I gave them to my granddaughter because I support her art habit, for the most part, financially. I gave her the Arteza watercolors too because she wanted them but I wouldn't never ever use them. I'm just glad I got them even cheaper on Amazon deals. If she only had one set I would get her almost anything other than Arteza but since she has another set of W&N that I gave her I let her take them. She can use them for messing around I guess.

Hi Lindsay! Thanks for this comparison video - I really enjoyed watching you go through so many options... and... a bit surprised by just how many of these sets I also own although none of them have had any love lately. Now I’m encouraged to play and do my own hands on comparison of available options. I have my favorites (FC AD, CA Supra, D Inktense) and those that I should eliminate (Cretacolor, Prisma, Derwent) as well as others that fall in between. I was glad to see you incorporate the Scribble Sticks into the woodless category as I was not pleased with them as crayons. I’ve found in general that I prefer highly pigmented options that dissolve easily as opposed to those that were designed to keep some of the original lines in tact. I do love that you’re real, Lindsay. It’s like you’re sitting across the table from me and sharing your thoughts. I’ll have to replay this video when I do my comparison and we’ll chat. LOL Thanks for all you do to brighten our world. Have a great day and stay safe. 🙂

Very informative 🤩 ! I’m pretty new to the art world, so I didn’t know there was such a selection 😳 ! Since I lean more toward mixed media & stamping, I may have to track down those scribbles !... I really like the intensity & the smooth lay down... & it seems Artiza watercolor pencils have the intensity I like too ! Thanks for sharing ! 😃💚🐰🐥🌹

I have a 12 set of Derwent and 24 set of Reeves. I honestly like the Reeves more! Derwents don’t liquify as easily and leave behind pencil streaks. Reeves blend like a dream and at such a better price point. I also like the color pallet more. I wish I had gotten them first. 😂 Glad to see the scribble sticks in here because when they first came out I really wanted them but now that I see they are so similar to watercolor pencils I’ll probably pass and use what I have. Thanks for doing all the effort with these comparisons vids Lindsay!! ❤️

Great comparisons Lindsay, excellent for those of us looking to purchase more, I gave the Derwent inktense.
You should not feel compelled to justify the supplies that you have, a mechanic wouldn't have to justify how many tools he had! And I love the way you speak, it's so much more authentic, would rather hear your erms than feel like you're reading a speech. Take care 😊

I love watercolor pencils. I have both of the regular and watercolor 72 sets of Pagos pencils and I have Arteza 48 watercolor pencils. I have some other brands as well, but I think I like these ones the best. I too got them free in exchange for a review. I made some cards at Christmas with the Arteza watercolor pencils and then when I had watered them down and the paper was dry, I went over some of the areas with metallic watercolors that gave just the right amount of glimmer. I love glimmer and glitter in what I make.

Thanks for the great comparo. I have an ancient 72 set of Derwent watercolour pencil. They definitely have the old logo Rexel Derwent logo like on yours but the image is a couple of fish and fly fishing rod and tackle. I think my husband may have bought them for me when we were first dating about 35 years ago - so might be even older than yours. By the state of the relative mintness of most of the pencils its was obvious I never loved them much. Well at least hubby and I are still together.
