Showcasing a story about a flawed character is not an issue. We celebrated 'Joker' movie and it did explore a morally grey character. My issues were when I was sitting in the theatre, audiences laughed and hooted during scenes which were very questionable or downright evil. I think not even the director would have expected a cheer or laugh during those scenes, so these movies reflects more about us as a society and less about those who make them. 🙏

How ironic it is to see that during the release of Padmavat, people started outrage without even seeing the film claiming that the film portrays a fictional female character in a bad light. From beating up Bhansali, to destroying sets, issuing death threats to Deepika and citing violence, they've left no stone unturned. However for a movie like Animal which shows no respect towards real women, objectifies them, reduces them to their physical appearance or stereotypical roles, they are beaten up, treated as mere sex objects but why still I haven't seen any street protests yet. Have they accepted this portrayal of females as acceptable? Says a lot about our progress as a society.

I see so many comments about Sandeep Reddy Vanga's heroes having a "dark side" when the character is just toxic and misogynistic. There is nothing wrong with heroes and characters having a gray shade. But when those scenes are glorified in the movie, with a badass theme playing in the background when he/she does or says anything toxic, that is when it becomes a problem.

Having problematic characters isn’t really the problem, but more so that they aren’t held accountable of their actions that are extremely problematic. Not seeing a character arc, and justifying this behavior is what makes it an issue.
Technical aspects can be exemplary but does not hold up to the lack of story arcs.

In Darr, I loved Srk's villain character but he payed for the consequences for his actions by dying. A women lead needs to portray such a character with conviction. Kangana Ranaut tried in some films, but looked sloppy nd failed. Instead of blaming society, women leads should take mre responsibility in making a hit movie. Imagine how good Vidya Balan was in Kahaani.. Or Tabu was in Andhadhun.. May the women lead adopt their approach nd work hard in getting the producers money bk than making excuses of society not accepting them in lead. Audience will decide whether to spend their money on a film, nd a good film, regardless of gender of the lead, will rake in money.

Animal is simple a really shitty movie where the "plot" makes no sense, and the all the characters are very one directional. It's not even messed up characters, problematic language, or women being portrayed in the movie, but how Sandeep Reddy failed as a Director, Writer and Editor, it was a complete mess, it didn't make sense, most parts it was like "It is what it is, deal with it".
After his father gets shot, he goes to his hometown to demand help, his cousins tag along without a second thought and plead their loyalty to him... how does it make sense, when he has never seen these people all his life and is out of nowhere they are ready to die for him... how?
Second: I could not understand why he loved his wife Geetanjali, or why she loved him back, there was zero chemistry, and explanation of why she endured the abuse in her relationship, also at certain points she seemed only sex crazy...
The most illogical thing was him becoming a mafia-like gangster, hunting his enemy, killing them out of the blue, they did not show any criminal connections, he is in America, returns to India, goes on kill spear, gets connected with a gun supplier, how does that make sense, without prior showing any connection with the mafia world or criminal contacts.
His friends were decent people, his in-laws were decent people, his dad was a businessman, and the in-laws from his sister's side were white-collar criminals, not getting their hands dirty directly.
The story was messed up, the plot lost its purpose, and it was all a big mess. at points, it felt like Sandeep had written the script inspired by Andrew Tate's interviews.

Jammy just spoke my mind. This was my exact analysis after I watched it.
    1. The film would have benefitted from more screen time to anil Kapoor and Bobby deol.
    2. The director being the editor also cost the film the run time. He was so indulgent that he kept everything he loved about the film.
    3. Ranbir's character swings between progressive and regressive, though I must say it seemed very real.
    4. Many scenes after the interval seemed unnecessary to the overall story.
    5. The art and the artiste were perfect but it stopped being engaging post interval. However, last 45 mins were again Bang on.
    6. It felt like the director loves his characters too much. Some justifications by the characters seemed like they were being justified to the audience. Also, felt like the director imagines himself in these alpha male roles and writes them as if he was that character.

I am not sure what's the reason that an absolutely violent movie like Animal is more popular than a movie that inspires like Sam Bahadur. Have we as an audience started to enjoy unknowingly toxic masculinity or is it something even darker than that? Is there on some dark deep level, men are able to live that part of themselves through this kind of cinema? A movie like Gadar 2 which I felt was made money only through the nostalgia it created also portrayed a Tara Singh as the unbeatable macho almost a superhero. A Yash in KGF also generates hoots in theatre.. It's definitely an escapism but the question is WHY is this escapism needed? Why MEN when portrayed as these characters, these HERO who can never be defeated, make more buzz than more human male characters?

I saw this movie, but somehow, I believe that SVR has some contradictory thoughts against women. Neither does it seem to be positive, and neither negative. For instance, in regards to Rashmika, she seems to like a toy for Ranbirs character, whereas in regards to his sister, it was different. The first half was awesome, but in the second half, there was something missing. Some may like it while some may not.

I have a problem with lies regarding Ranjeet Nalwa Shalwa and halwa. Sikhs were colonized by the British for over 150 years, but Afghans defeated British. Sikhs have been always state beneficiaries of the British and has serviced them throughout. Sikhs are the reason behind British colonization of South Asia. They took help ( soldiers, guns, bombs, telescopes, Maps ) from British to invade Hazara and uzbik ( singers and dancers) region of Afghanistan. Within 7 years Pashtuns/Pathans got together and kicked injured ranjett back to lahore . Nalwa was beheaded in jamord by Dost Mohammad. Afghan history and museums tell a different story but since they were never colonized by the British and never had British given cinemas, printing press, historians, railways, English schools, trained army, ports, parliament , radio etc, their version of history is not known.

The original sandeep reddy vanga film where he explores the interpersonal conflicts and rather than trying to solve them and preach them, he just shows the reality. Also i think the whole ranvijay's motive to kill bobby can be drawn from one dialogue of anil kapoor-"jab mujhe pehli goli lagi, tab teri aawaz sunayi dhi, or jab dhusri goli lagi mein akela tha. *long note alert*
I utterly disliked the film. Don't get me wrong; I'm all for Ranbir’s violent mass avatar, but I felt his intentions weren't clear, and his character lacked depth, as did everybody else’s. Why did they have to justify him being the “animal” at the end by showing Anil finally validating Ranbir’s acts? Yes, he had been an absent father, but that doesn’t mean his son has to become an animal. He’s a psychopath and always has been. Why was Vanga trying so hard to make us root for him? In that final Diwali scene, Anil acknowledged that his son has always been a criminal who is just using his father’s name to justify his criminality. I think Vanga should have explored that ideology more. Anil should have kept his stance of not empathizing with Ranbir and seen criminality as criminality. With Ranbir not getting validation from his father at the end, surrendering to the destiny of his father losing his life because of cancer (to protect whom he became this animal) because nobody can fight destiny and his wife leaving him would have been the perfect end. What was all that “agla janam” nonsense? A criminal getting what he deserves. Also, it's not like Ranbir was any different than Anil as a father. He too doesn’t give enough time to his kids, keeps himself busy in this animal world. The only difference is he talks with his kids in a nicer way. I expected Vanga would show how Ranbir was different as a father after everything he has gone through as a kid. Also, why is Bobby’s character projected as a villain when he has similar intentions as Ranbir, both avenging the wrong for their respective families? Bobby’s intention seemed stronger to me as his family was denied their legit rights.

    |MILD SPOILERS | Mostly agree with you, but I'll be a little harsher than you.
    1. Vanga's protagonists are so toxic and problematic that it is difficult to root for them and that becomes a hinderance. I didn't give a hoot as who dies in the end.
    2. They didn't explore father-son relationship as much as I would have wanted, they gave it only 10 minutes at the end and it was gold.
    3. They did not explore family dynamics much, Bobby's character was wasted. Actually, you can sleep for an hour after interval and you won't miss a thing.
    4. Interval block was great, but eventually tiring and repetitive. Jawan and RRR are the gold standard and it was way lesser than those.
    5. That hand to hand combat was really good but they shouldn't have played the song there. Fight scenes on songs are getting outdated.
    6. Actual ending (before that animal park nonsense) was a little underwhelming.
    7. In conclusion, if you think, when the mindless violence was on, the movie was fun. The writer/director could not create a good drama without it, except last 10 minutes.

Was hoping so much for him but unfortunately this is the sad part of Indian cinema that a popular star takes most of the spotlight leaving away the good actors gasping for air. But doesn't talk about how bad the screenplay and the script was. It did not make sense one bit. It's non sense. It feels like we're just forgiving bad films for sake of 'mass entertainment'; only this film wasn't even entertaining (but I guess that's subjective). Why was Balbir so angry at Vijay? The villain's background..No backdrops were established, making the sequences look out of place imo. Vanga sadly fell for the Arjun Reddy tropes to create hysteria. Never felt a theatre so alive and having the time of their lives in so long, and that too while watching an A rated movie. Sandeep Reddy Vanga delivers on his promise, crafting a brutally intense film teeming with bloodshed. The first half was absolute madness with a combo of every emotion that would be known to you.
And oh man, what can I say about that interval block. A monstrous 20 minutes, epitomizing sheer ferocity. Although the second half builds slowly, it's essential for the narrative given the unfolding events, allowing the characters to organically progress.
Ranbir just hits it out of the park and makes a statement why he's one of the greatest actors this country will ever know. Bobby Deol, in his brief appearance, exudes a menacing aura.
The climax is beautiful and poetic, to say the least. And the post-credit scene? Utterly insane in its level of intensity and bloodbath.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga cleverly addresses critics in the final shots, seemingly daring anyone to challenge his vision for this movie.

I totally agree with the point about the critics haha- but I also think the final shot gave a bit of a sneak peak of what may happen in the second part.
      *SPOILERS*
In the first scenes we see Ranbir make that same gesture when recounting the monkey story. The same gesture is used by Bobby in the face to face. It could be a complete coincidence because they seem to be two sides of the same coin, but what if it’s actually a mannerism that Bobby and his family use. We know the plan that Bobby and his family have and the final shot of Ranbir making that same gesture makes me think that the plan might have been successful- which is what “AP” will explore if it’s made

If we can sit through John Wick massacring 200 assassins who take it as an action flick, then the same courtesy has to be applied to Animal. John Wick struggles apparently with remorse for having returned to the violence but he still participates in it. Yes the violence is gratuitous but that's how action flicks work. It's highly stylised. Animals portrays this violence within the patriarchy, within context. As for sexism , well that is the patriarchy. Violence is also patriarchy. Ranbir 's character derives his identity through his father and wants his sisters to do the same.

    SPOILER ALERT
I personally think Bobby Deol’s character was just a catalyst to the whole story and his short screen presence is justified. The story of animal is not about two brothers fighting it out because of family feud but the story of the turbulent relationship between a father and a son. Ranvijay seeks love and attention from everyone around him especially his father, going to all lengths to do anything for him. I was a little confused when Tripti Dimri came into picture, despite how beautiful she looked. But that whole scene emphasised the lengths Ranvijay could go to for his father. Rashmika killed it in the scene afterwards. As an action movie lover who loves a good villain, I did want to see more from Bobby Deol but I just can’t get over how much of a Ranbir Kapoor movie this was. And the last scene between the father and son was so captivating and relatable, making me sob and forgive Sandeep for not utilising Bobby more. Apart from the drama and action in this film was very well executed. Although I did wish this movie would just be a one-off, the tease of a part two in the post credits doesn’t affect me. I want to watch Ranvijay on screen again and be immersed in his journey after his father is no more.

That became a sticking point.

Also Rashmika confronting later on about it makes it much more impactful compared to if the audience had no idea what happened between Ranbir and Tripti's character. This performance of Ranbir was at par of Rockstar,Tamasha and Sanju.
His best act he really inhabited the character slowly slowly from the start and became the devil in the end. Happy to see him finally getting accepted in the Mass Genre with the film that is Baap of all Mass movies in Bollywood 🥵🔥💀

Looks like I am the only one who didn't like this movie, or at least the 2nd half of it.
The first half in itself was a movie, and almost felt the story had been completed. The second half had nothing for the story to build to, the subplot of affairs with zoya after RK character says he would not ever be disloyal to his wife (this plot was just an excuse for the director to shoot semi nude sex scenes as he has an 'A' rated movie, and to setup up an established actress for his sequel). Bobby Deol looked menacing but the final battle between them just didn't work for me (mera vai gunga heh, mera vai behra he had my theatre burst out into laughter). The villains had very little to do in this movie, and had no proper motive what so ever. Why was RK's jijaji involved with the plan?
2nd half was dragged out needlessly and this movie could have been edited to become almost 30-45 mins shorter.
RK was good at first, then he went into his Sanju Mode and never returned till the end.
And it's 2023, be a little more creative than plastic surgeries and body doubles. We have seen that countless times.
The scene where RK confesses his affair to rasmika's character, the confrontation should be the forefront, not them getting it on just after the song that played. That should have been the final nail in their relationship, not her leaving after everything settles.
Why do directors feel the need to somewhat redeem these characters, let him be the ANIMAL he is, break the characters heart, inflict pain mentally too. RK's character is supposed to be have a delusion of love for his father and a psychopathic obsession for his approval. But the screenplay never really fully commits to that, and the dangling doesn't work.
The first half of this movie sold me dreams and then the second half ruined it completely.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga made this movie just to piss people off, trying to become the new mainstream Anurag Kashyap showing violence and nudity, but failed miserably.

The reason Ranbir exudes problematic and Turmultous relationship brilliantly with his onscreen dads in films over the years, is because somewhere in his subconscious mind, he has dealt this with his own dad while growing up

It's not great movie ...nope ..the problem is venga is writing his self validating fantasy...the fault lies in character writing .he is not writing any dark character , he is glorifying it ...if venga is really that brave then he should have guts to show his dark characters as it is ..like in vastav , Godfather ..Indian audience is just lost cause if you calling this masterpiece ......

To say Vanga promotes male toxicity is a far-fetched conclusion. He shows emotions in its rawest, truest form. And toxicity is an attribute that's prevalent to human nature; he just isn't chicken enough to show it in its true, unadulterated, grounded, artistic form.

his view and take on characters is not hypothetical or formulaic , I'd much rather want a 100 of these than the cliched saviourship cinema that has been provided day in day out. This is fresh , and even if the character are violent or chaotic or self destructive , its only showing what there really is. in all us , if you can accept that

@@bluered1686 it's a paradoxical relationship. You, as an actor, are required to keep a clean and empathetic face in front of your fans, understanding their collective psychology that inevitably serves your cause, socially and financially. You are a slave to their volatility (because audiences are volatile in a constantly changing demography of movie-going and celebrity-following) and to tackle that, you need to master over their emotions, yet serving at the same time. You need to check your step before any creative choice you take, no matter how much of a challenge and potential that choice might bear. You become a superstar by catering to the masses. In the grand scale, losing a portion of it might instigate a downward spiral of your career. In a country like ours, public make stars. An actor is Bound to respect that, and be a slave to that.

Aa expected nobody will praise rahsmikas performance, in the comment section, but I am impressed by her raw acting skill, given that she had to put up with a difficult husband in the movie, her expressions seemed quite upto the mark, specially the crying portion when ranbir got admitted to hospital, also the confrontation betweem her and ranbir in bed room, the whole movie story is filled with spontaneous moments which we dont get to witness in real life. Somebody asked her in the press conference whether this was her best performance till date and she said yess. Honestly according to me also its her best performance, pick up any of her previous movies none of it had as intense moments as this one.
