    Is that a wood nut if so could you do a close up on it becuase it sounds great and that means i could make one myself thanks.

    • @NoahCline
      @NoahCline  Год назад

      Yes, the nut is walnut along with the rest of the banjo. Depending on string type, ebony or bone is better for steel strings. Walnut works ok for nylon, though.

    I want to start a mountain banjo project based on the Foxfire design. Is a slot peg-head significantly more difficult than the regular kind?

    • @NoahCline
      @NoahCline  3 года назад

      Not really, except for the fact of cutting the slots out being an extra step. It’s easiest to draw the slots (I like to make the slots inset 3/8” from and parallel to the side edge of the peghead so the mounting screws don’t protrude into the slots, but that can be adjusted depending on the length of the screws). I then drill a hole about the width of the slot at either end, and then feed the blade on the coping saw through the upper holes to cut the slots out (usually cut one side and slip the blade back through the cut, then cut the other side so the blade doesn’t have to be turned/adjusted). I made a jig to use with a router to rout the slots, but found the coping saw method to be easier and less chance of the router bit grabbing and splitting the peghead - found out the hard way, once. Most recommend drilling the shaft holes for the pegs first before cutting the slots so the wood doesn’t tear out, but I tend to cut the slots and then drill the holes so if it starts crooked, it’s easier to correct it with the slot cut out. The fifth peg can be done in a similar manner (if wanting a slotted fifth peg) by just drilling two holes touching to create the slot centered on the shaft hole for the string to run into the slot. I’ve both drilled all the way through the back of the neck or just below the shaft hole to allow clearance for the string, depending on the look I wanted.

    Hey Noah, how would one either purchase a banjo from you, or break into banjo building? Im sure you get these comments often, but I'm extremely interesting in building my own..

    • @NoahCline
      @NoahCline  4 года назад +2

      Matt,
      Sorry for not replying to your comment sooner. If you would be interested in buying one from me or having me build one for you, feel free to contact me @ n_cline1@aol.com.
      If you plan to build one of your own, check out the book Foxfire 3. Also, take a look at Randy Cordle’s plans: www.hangoutstorage.com/banjohangout.org/storage/attachments/archived/files/mountain-banjo-plans-16461130112018.pdf
      His plans are based on the Hicks/Glenn/Proffitt style of mountain banjo, as I have based my builds with a few refinements, such as having down angle in the neck.

    • @NoahCline
      @NoahCline  4 года назад

      Most of the banjos I play are commissions. I’ve only kept a couple of the ones I’ve built for myself, which is hard to do sometimes.
