Thanks for putting this up! I remember when it was released, and got good acclaim from critics - but I never got around to seeing it. Some movie came up recently that jogged my memory about this forgotten gem - and here it is! Bud Cort is very good in this for sure! Good depiction of early prairie Canadian living.

I live in the area that this movie was shot, still looks that in 2020. Best place in the world, wide open prairie.

    Best scene: 1:30:25
Always like this movie My parents were educated in rural one-room schoolhouses and my mom also became a teacher in one, too.
My dad was a big fan of another one of Max Braithwaite's novels: "The Night We Stole the Mounties Car"

Location of this true story was 12 miles south of Eyre, Saskatchewan a ghost town now. I grew up in the vicinity and heard stories of who some of the real characters were in the story.

Yes, I think my father knew some of those stories too. He was from around Yellowgrass.

Other films in which Bud Cort appeared were as the character Harold in the 1971 cult classic `Harold and Maude` and in the final flower children scene of the 1967 film `Sweet Charity` starring Shirley MacLaine.

My father was a student in a rural 1-room schoolhouse in central Saskatchewan. His eldest sister had 6-8 weeks of training in Toronto to become a teacher in the mid-1940s but luckily she was able to teach in the school closest to her home so she could live at home. The school was a couple miles from the house, quite a distance without a car.
We studied this book in high school in 1983 in Saskatchewan. This movie is fine but the book is better.

I saw this film at a (long disappeared) cinema in late 1979 I think. I loved it then, read the book it was based on (loved that too) If anyone is aware of a fully restored copy I'd be gratefull if you posted the info.

6:22 I immediately recognized the "Club" can... a brand of chewing tobacco.. the traditional plug kind... not Skoal nor snuff. The garage has many old cans used as storage for nuts and bolts (and an occasional "Big Ben" brand; my Grandfather was a user, though he died when I was three. My Dad, my mother, my aunt, and my grandmother can all remember how Grandpa chewed, spit, and drooled the stuff... always thought of it as " EEEEWWWWWW" !! Explains why none our family ever had the thought of using tobacco products of any kind.
