Realistically speaking, the island is bound to change over the centuries, not just from human terraforming but from nature itself. Its shape in 1274 would not be exactly what we see today. So differences like "some rivers connect in the game but not in real life" are actually really genius.
Especially a tropical environment. Here in Colorado there are 200 year old stumps that haven't changed a bit because our climate is extremely dry and relatively cold. It preserves things just right. But Iki, like Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, New Orleans, parts of Texas, and many other hot, wet areas in the U.S, is bound to change. Rivers get bigger, smaller, or move altogether. Houses and trees rot. Rocks are broken down by the almost constant rain. It's bound to happen :)
Except that rivers don't flow in the way the drew the map for the game. They have both ends of the river flowing into the sea, which would make them tidal inlets instead of freshwater rivers. Rivers change, but they always flow downhill. But your general point stands: on Tsushima for example, the beach where the Mongols actually landed in the 1200s is a few hundred meters inland from the beach today. And they've built canals that divided what was once one main island into three

I had a feeling it wasn't just Days Gone that wanted to get their game as realistic as possible! I've finished this game 4 times (twice with the DLC) and it's by far my favorite game I've ever played, besides Uncharted 4. Even better than Skyrim, Minecraft, Days Gone, Horizon: Zero Dawn, the RE franchise, etc. Maybe it's because I was born on Japan but never got to see it for myself (we left when I was barely a year old.) DG and GoT are two of my absolute favorite PS4 games as well. Only criticism I have is, I would have liked some friendly/neutral NPC's walking around like in GTA/RDR/Skyrim. The open world gets kind of boring when you know everybody you'll meet is an enemy.
Wow. They really did take over from AC. People who live in Venezia (Venice) said they knew their way around in the game since it was so realistic. People from Iki must feel great about this, even if some stuff is in the wrong place, it's probably fun for them to point that out while playing.

I am a huge fan of Ghost of Tsushima, finished the game on the PS4 soon after it came out... but never picked up the Iki expansion as I thought I would one day make the jump to the PS5 and thus get it like that through the director's cut there. However, my gaming days have somewhat come to a halt meanwhile, as I am travelling a lot in South-East Asia. So... as I come from Busan, would you recommend I go to Iki island or Tsushima first? I really want to explore the game's world in real life. Never traveled this part of Japan before, so it's a first for me.
Speaking of iki, on my ps4 it says for ps+ i can get it for free, but when i hop on my account that has ps+ the option disappears. Any ideas to why? Just tryna get the game

Tsushima in the game is pretty accurate in shape, but the edges are too smooth. The terrain in the game is very inaccurate because it’s too flat and it’s too diverse. In real life it’s pretty much forested hills everywhere. There is also a cliff that separates the northern part of the island from the rest which isn’t present in real life (the cliff is there to prevent players from prematurely exploring).
🤬 😡 I heard Tsushima island is covered in Garbage now..very sad. The current issue of marine plastic waste in Tsushima. Large amounts of Garbage, flows into Tsushima from the Sea of Japan through the Tsushima Strait after the Kuroshio Current. 😦 😧
