    The clash of two legendary and feared classes of warrior: the Mongols and the samurai. They meet on the beaches of Tsushima. What did combat between them look like? Misconceptions persist about this question: from the belief that samurai attempted “single combat” dueling to the idea that Mongols utterly dominated the samurai on the battlefield. Today, we look at the fascinating warfare that characterized the first and second Mongol invasions.

      what were you sailing in? I've sailed around 20,000 nautical miles over the course of a couple years, in my early 20's, mainly in a 65ft gaff schooner, 6mo on a 169ft (sparred) tops'l schooner, but the scariest was a 6 day crossing from the Bahamas to Montego Bay, Jamaica, in a 26 ft fiberglass sloop; we didn't see real nasty weather (the worst I saw was on the gaff schooner), but getting past the violent, tall and close chop of the shoal, windward side of the island in the Bahamas, trying to get out to the manageable swells in deep water, took 3 attempts, and the violent crashing down and into waves when below in the 26ft sloop, along with the loud banging and wrenching on the hull, was terrifying; seemed like the boat would surely be stove in or torn apart.
      It was also a delivery, and my first 3 days sailing in her; the only other crew was the skipper, who had only a few days to prepare before leaving Florida a week prior, single-handed, so we didn't really know what might be close to failure, having not had a professional inspection done. Good times
      I still have a hopeful plan to sail round the world, specifically I'd like to sail from southern Chile, through the South Pacific islands, explore New Zealand and Australia, then sail up to SE Asia.

    japan imo shows a perfect example of why being an island is such a tactical advantage, similar could be said for other historical world powers like the uk. the mongols were a much greater force in terms of man power and realistically in military tactics but the fact that they had to invade by sea meant that japan actually had a chance of stopping a mongol invasion.

    • @bellgrand
      @bellgrand Год назад +169

      People think that the Japanese didn't know what they were doing, but they were very intentional. In the first war, they defeat the Mongols, and the storm destroyed them as they were limping back to Korea. In the second war, they denied landing sites to the Mongols and just waited for the typhoon season.
      Ironically, Taiwan has a similar defense strategy. There is only a small window of time where an amphibious invasion is possible. Then typhoon season starts, followed by winter squalls, which makes resupply and air/naval support impossible.

      I think the exact opposite. Until the Muromachi period that would be correct, but from the time the samurai class grew and became the terror of East Asia, their powers went beyond China and Joseon. China and Joseon suffered devastating blows even by Japanese pirates, being pushed back in hand-to-hand combat. There are many records of chinese National troops, more than 10 times many, hide in castle while the pirates plundered the village.

      Initially 1000 equipped and prepared Mongol soldiers attacked an unprepared Japanese coastal region. A force they thought large enough to take southern Japan. Yet the Japanese fought the Mongols off and got them to retreat.
      The next wave was of 3x as large, so 3000 mongols but this time against a prepared and armed shogunate. I think it would have been a heavy victory for the Japanese. Especially given that they are not only better equipped, better trained and know the terrain and have access to abundant resources, e.g. food, etc. They also had a culture that did not fear death. I think the Mongols more than met their match here.

    Woah! I'm watching every History Dose video from oldest to newest, and this feels like the start of a new era of even better quality. The graphics now feel like I'm in one of those 3D presentation rides at an amusement park. It's like I'm in a vehicle on a track in a dark hallway, that's telling a story as it goes along. Images are on the wall and lit up with glowy lights; and when an important moment in the story happens, the vehicle stops and a spotlight illuminates one of those "hologram" animations to convey it. That's what this video feels like.
    I'm really looking forward to watching the rest of these vids. Even though the quality is incredible, I will not take it for granted, and will still super enjoy them if they have more basic graphics.
    It was awesome and scary seeing such a realistic portrayal of the Samurai and how they fought. Archery was super important to them, which I wasn't expecting. The pride-based culture of requiring evidence for who they killed really adds that historical Japanese flair to them, and it was real too. Including the storm's impact made the story more realistic, because real war isn't just about the heroes, it's also largely about the conditions and using them to your advantage.

    This is not true. It is true that the Tsushima army was defeated, but the reason was that the Mongolian army attacked with 40,000 men against the Japanese army of 500. defeated. The Japanese army also won the second battle. The typhoon came when the Mongolian army was defeated by the Japanese samurai and was escaping by ship. So the Mongolian army did not withdraw because the typhoon came, but because they were defeated. It's true that a typhoon comes when you're withdrawing by boat. Japan was invaded by Yuan Mongol Empire, which was ruled by Kublai Khan, where nomads were minority. Koreans and Chinese were majority, they were not one nation, they even spoke on different languages. Tactics and skills were different. There were three generals(Mongolian, Korean, Chinese) and they worked separately without one systematic plan, also they didn’t have enough experience on naval battle. Profile pic checks out. Every anime weeb will glorify Japan. Although I agree that the history of japan is interesting and fascinating, it is not a magical place. Peasants were often butchered in the civil wars, and the brutality of Japan was demonstrated during world war II. The samurais were not as honorable as you think. A lot of them are hypocrites and rejoices in violence.

    • @KinaIchi
      @KinaIchi 2 месяца назад

      @ profile pic has nothing to do with Japan 😂 you call me a ‘weeb’ which is funny, fully considering I’m a native and the Japanese populous is what brought the term weeb abroad. Hate anime personally, but there sure is an audience for it. As for WWII, the Samurai were not the typical warrior, as by that point it was simply ceremonial. The honor in their ways was deceased by this point. Perry (a mid 1800’s explorer of trade) re-established trade forcefully corresponding with the other hemisphere. That is when the death of the Shogunite and Samurai began, all being wiped clean by the late 1870’s.

      As a teacher (not a history teacher, though), I've always thought that it would be cool to teach history as stories instead of just textbook facts. Some teachers try to, but it's not as common as it maybe should be. Imagine learning about the Mongol Empire or the Shogunate by hearing the story of a hypothetical individual person involved in the battles. And what they might have experienced, and their feelings about it based on their culture, or what they were protecting back home, or who they served.
      That's really the best way to learn history, I think. Humans relate so strongly to stories, and that's why games/movies about history are popular.

For within the game's story, Khotun's invasion was ultimately a failure, and so the Mongols never acknowleged him following the events. The invasion of Japan by the Mongols indirectly contributed to the fall of the ruling Kamakura Shogunate. Many samurais were bitter that the Shogunate did not adequately reward them for literally saving the entirety of japan, and instead honored mere monks for their thoughts and prayers. Consequently conflict breaks out and the Shogunate was no more.
