  • Aur Prospector shows you how to make yourself a Henderson Gravel pump, aka the hand dredge pump.
The Henderson Gravel pump was developed in the UK by Alf Henderson and his friend Chris Engel over 40 years ago.
Before the invention amateur gold panners had just used shovels mainly, and left lots of gold behind.
Since building the Henderson pump many panners have increased their gold count by using the pumps all around the world.
Alf never patented his idea and was happy for all prospectors to copy and use the pump design.
RIP Alf Henderson your legacy lives on!!
Many Thanks to Chris Engel for letting me use the pictures from his archive and for telling me their story.

Thanks for that history at the end. Always a good thing to acknowledge people who came up with great practical solutions.

Cheers Steve, Yes, now the gravel pump is taking off in other parts of the world i noticed its being renamed the hand dredge pump and i read a post where a guy thought he had come up with the idea. So i thought i needed to refresh peoples memories of where it actually evolved from.
Some people still cannot differentiate between a bait pump and a gravel pump.
The Henderson pump is for sucking up gravels and gold, where as the bait pump is for sucking out crevices.

They have been making them for more than 40 years in Australia . They call them yabby pumps because they mostly use them for catching crayfish, which they call yabbies.

Yes the gravel pump was developed from the yabbie pump, i think Alf was the first to commercially sell them as gold panning suction equipment.

Just throwing this out there but I think you need to trap the material in the tube for the transfer to your pan/bucket. Gold is heavy and will fall quickly while you transfer to your container. When we make these we incorporate a smaller opening at the bottom of the tube and at 90 degrees of the tubes length.....about a half inch smaller than the tube size. This prevents the gold from falling out. If all of your gold were in the top portion of the tube it might not be a problem but any gold "last in" the tube will quickly be first out as soon as you stop suction.

Yes you are correct, some people do put 90 degree bends on them.
However the way we use them is in moving quanity of material fast, you get a feel for it and get the timing right and very little falls out.
But yes if you are after every spec the a 90 degree bend works well.
Its not a crevice pump, dont be confused with that its for shifting gravel fast

Good idea about the end cap Jason, I have been looking for a thick nylon chopping board but I'm sure something will crop up sooner or later.

Could you not cap the pipe and fill the bottom 3/4 inches with resin. Could either drill it or insert a piece of copper pipe for the hole in the middle

@@AurProspector I've been a making a pump tonight. I chucked a branch in the lathe for an end cap. I've just got to find a handle and it's finished.

Interesting, but that hand pump has been used for a very long time as a mud prawn pump.

Quite possibly but Alf Henderson was the first to sell them as a dedicated gold prospecting tool.

..and bait pumps were generally smaller bore like a crevice pump.
