- GOLD dredging over the boarder line in new regulations. New clarified rules update makes these crevice suckers not legal in BC, Canada.
This video is part of a video series made for a high school gold mining and mineral prospecting course. This video shows how to make a bedrock crevice sucker, or also known as a hand dredge.
Home made hand dredges are perfect for crevicing for gold as it is one of the best crevice tools for working underwater. These tools are also known as a gold sucker, crevice sucker, suction dredge, sucker tube, or by many brand names like "Mother Sucker". This video is all about how to make a hand dredge.

NIce no hat :)
For the plunger leather strips, a suggestion from an ultra nerd with math, but a new prospector.
1. Measure the diameter of the circle including the plastic.
2. Cut it in half to get the radius
3. Use a protractor with this radius to draw a perfect circle of the exact size of the pipe.
4. Cut out very slowly to create a perfect circle.
Great video! I cant wait to go to home depot and get some pipe and fittings. Thanks Dan, love all your videos!
Hey Dan, I know I'm late to the show here, but I've been watching your gold course videos and building along with your instructions and I have a quick couple questions if you have a second... In case this becomes too much to read, love your channel and appreciate the time and effort you put into sharing...
First and my main reason for reaching out, in your 'how to make a snuffer bottle' video, ruclips.net/video/k6dpo36p8dM/видео.html , you said to 'cut the tube straight and not at an angle' and then said you'd go over why that is when making the crevice sucker, but that little tidbit didn't make it to this video, could you please explain straight vs angled nozzles (maybe in a video short)?? I'm especially curious given I've come to trust and respect your knowledge and advice, more so after finding South Carolina gold using it, lol, yet I'm seeing a nearly $200 x-crevice sucker being sold with two angled nozzles...
Second question, is there any science, traditional or hillbilly, to the leather seal spacing?? Both the distance between the two leathers as well as the amount of overhang from the outer edge of the leather back to the outer edge of the plastic core (and/or fender washers)?? Or the thickness of the leather used?? I'm just now building several different sized crevice tools using your video as a guide, most are 16"-30" lengths of 2" PVC and I've used a scrap of composite deck board that I ripped down to 1/2" for the 'plastic wood'... I've used 1-3/4", 1-5/8" and 2-1/8" hole saws to cut the wood cores, and all of them fit and seem to work at home in a bucket... I've also built one using a 1-1/2" tube as the main body, but on that one I just put a double thick 1-1/4" fender washer between the leathers and a 1" washer under the bolt head and that seems to work the same as well...
In exchange for reading thru all that, I'll share that I found using a drywall circle cutter tool with the circular roller blade ($10 at home depot/lowes) makes marking the leather a dream... I only had 1/16" and 5/32" leather scraps and it marked both really nicely and it actually cut 3/4s of the way thru the thicker one... I found center punching the leather to snuggly fit the cutter center pin worked best, as well as either working on a piece of drywall or drilling a pilot hole in a piece of wood to correct for the offset of the pin and cutting wheel... I test cut cardboard till i was happy with the size, then used it to cut out 10 perfect seals...
Excellent. Fast pace= maximum information in minimum time. Clear concise instructions. Well done sir.
Again amazing videos. I have not been in school in about 30 years, but man would of loved to have had a teacher like you.
Been thinking the same thing...
Nice video...finally someone teaching kids something valuable.
What a great teacher and valuable information. Well Done Dan!
Hi there
I want to thank you for your videos and how-to's. I have greatly appreciated watching them. I look forward to more. Regards...
Dan- your class is fantastic! These kids may not get it now, but they will recognize your genius and generosity as time goes on. Three cheers!
Why thank you.
Absolutely love his channel, informative to say the least...
Great video as always Dan!
I thought I would share a couple of ideas before they die of loneliness 🤣.
A pipe cutter works good on the black PVC if you have one handy.
Using a piece of threaded rod for the leather/plastic wood piece makes it a little easier to take the plunger apart without having to break a superglue joint.
Soaking the leather circles in oil overnight makes it seal a little better, I just use whatever cooking oil the wife has handy.
Thanks for the tips! I'll try them out when I make mine.
I don’t mean to be that guy, but there’s a reason he used a saw on the black pipe. The black pipe is called abs pipe because it’s made of abs plastic, this is much different than pvc, which is why you use the cutter on pvc, pvc and abs have different properties.
Nice video. Glad to see the youth is in good hands.
The stuff you refer to as 'plastic wood", is called UHMW. Very cool and extremely versatile material...comes in sheets as well and is available at almost any wood supply place...and not very expensive either. Great video!
You are a very good instructor. I bet everyone loves your classed.
So for everyone that asked or wished there was a list here yah go! The only thing I didn't catch is the thickness of the plastic wood.. Looks like half inch I'm guessing?
2"-1.5" adapter
1.5"-3/4" threaded adapter
3/4" threaded riser cut in half
2" black abs tube - cut to 20" long
2" cap
3/4" pvc - cut to 22" long
3/4" pvc - cut two pieces 1.5"
3/4" t joint and three 3/4" caps
Use 1.75" hole saw for plastic wood, 1/2"?
Leather for plunger
. 25" bolt, washer, lock washer and nut
Awesome! It's about 3/4
@@Danhurd I made mine last night.. What I found at the hardware store was some "plastic wood" decking. They actually had a bunch of samples and just gave it to me! My crevice sucker works great though and we're going to scout a potential claim in the morning with it! I plan on using your method for sampling to find the paystreak, it's a textbook layout so hopefully we find some color! Thanks for all your videos, I've learned a tremendous amount from them!
AWESOME TO SEE YOU WORKING WITH THE KIDS DAN. EVERY SCHOOL NEEDS TO HAVE SHOP CLASS
Great design on this "Bedrock crevice sucker" Thanks for sharing!
Bought a bunch of panning equipment, watch all the Gold TV shows, watch all of Dan's videos, then I go to my state's website to learn laws and etiquette for panning in Virginia, and WOW is there a PhD course on understanding all this "crazy" stuff you need to know before you can actually prospect!?? WHEW!! Insane how hard they've made it to actually know whether or not you can pan somewhere...
Thank you for introducing me to Pioneer Pauly. You guys support the notion of friendly Canadians.
Great DIY video Dan.
Thank you very much for the video Dan. You are man with a lot of information who loves to share it. God Bless you always.
Thanks!
Love it, going to try and make one next week!
wish I had a cool class like this in school! very cool friend!
Indeed
One thing of note - if you want to cut out perfect circles you can get a piece of flexible band saw blade and tape it around the rim of the exact piece of PVC you plan on using, keep two ends handy one with the blade on the outside diameter and one with it on the inside diameter depending on where you want to make the cut. That way you can cut your plunger cores out with the inside blade, then cut your rubber (or leather idk why he'd use leather instead of rubber) with the head with the outside blade. I do stand by my earlier comment that a bait pump will crap all over these, but I can see the benefit of getting kids into prospecting through crafting.
i was thinking the same thing. but pvc is lighter then metal, the reduced weight is for hiking into gold bearing rivers. less you have to carry the better your experience…
leather swells and seals well but is kinda slippery. its also how old hand well pumps were sealed. personally id use neoprene or conveyor belt rubber myself. u can also use a rag in a pinch. found that one out the hard way....
I didn't know that you were a teacher! I guess that it makes sense through-- that's awesome, Dan!
Awesome!! thanks for the share!!
Thanks Dan! Ill be making this today to take with me to the sequoias to hunt some bedrock cracks in the rivers. Fingers crossed ill find some gold!
built one using your directions it works the balls!
Good thing teaching the young'uns. I've learned some stuff from you maybe I can return the favor a little. If you do this class again, you might try a key hole saw for the hole in the cap. you wont have to drill both sides, also be careful putting the cap in the vice you could egg shape it. It may not hurt anything on this, you can put a scrap piece of pipe for support, just not so far you can't get it out.
Excellent class. Thank you Dan
Good video Dan and good build, Thank you for suggesting it.
thanks!
Hi Dan.
I'm just wondering if I could use a bit of leather from a welding apron as I don't have any other leather around. Thanks
Thanks a lot Dan! always watching
Great explanation Thanks. I just make one and it works! I do have a big 2" flap check valve so I can just turn it over and dump into a bucket. I was thinking "That guy looks a lot like Dan Hurd" Then I read the comments. Thanks again Dan.
Excellent Dan thanks been having trouble with my gravel pump and tryd afew things that didn't last the day I will try using leather one. 👍
Thanks for sharing these videos. I'm learning a lot.
You're a good teacher.
You'd be considered a cool teacher.
Can ya dig it, I can dig it, alright!😎
You make this look way too easy Dan LOL, thanks much
I enjoy your work
for a better plunger instead of cutting up leather. use a rubber super ball. buy a stainless steel bolt, buy # 2 stainless steel washer, 1 stainless steel nut with a plastic liner in it to lock it down. the rubber ball you can buy at any toy store or a rote aid drug store. it will not rot out after a while and the seal you can adjust with a turn of the bolt to fit in the tube and make a super tight seal.
The reaction of the student at 14:31 🤣
You're a good teacher Dan.
Thanks!
Awesome Job as always!
Thanks!
You've a great series of videos here in your classroom.
Thanks
Reminds me of the act of Tommy Cooper the English comedian .... but he keeps the attention which makes him a good teacher...... ....
Hey Sir. I made a crevice pump recently and made a video...what do you think? I could not imagine how precise your method is...you actually make use of like engineering technology. Must be a superior product though, so much attention to detail. Awesome!👍
Great Teacher!
Thanks!
Good stuff!
Is there a reason that you use schedule 80 for some parts and schedule 40 for other parts? Could I use only schedule 40 for the entire thing?
I used a power plunger and one inch PVC and since the plunger is so much bigger it gets maybe gets a half gallon or so at a time.... Works great for me and cost around $10 and easy to carry and only used black tape to go around the threads to make a snug fit and 1 inch PVC over the threads works fantastic.
Great video, thx CR
Thanks for taking the time to watch
you have done well to incite students in project! 45 years I.T. teacher speaking
Thanks
When making the crevice sucker, can you use rubber cut outs instead of leather?
Hi Dan. Is there a list of materials for this project? I am enjoying your videos. Thanks.
Baranduda Australia
Love it had one built for me works perfect
I am so impressed to your line of gold mining videos from #101 to present...You could have a physical present and take groups of followers to weekend prospering indevores. To finally monitize your on line present....
Thanks! I just don't have enough time for everything I want to do as it is!
John Malkovich as a shop teacher!! Cheers hope all is well fellas
Hey Dan, how would you modify/adapt your hand pump if you wanted to add a couple of interchangeable one way valves to pump directly into a bucket?
How would you make an interchangeable nozzle from the one shown down to say a pex tube for really small cracks? You could then carry a small set of nozzles to fit whatever situation you find at the creek. Multifunctional.
I'd love to see an answer to your questions also.
Like the video just wondering what is the real name for the plastic wood at home Depot
Great Video, approximately how thick is the leather you are using? regards Bill
sirwilliamofpennylot 3-5mm
hey Dan love your instructional DIY projects. I have even made a few. most of your vids are nice wide screen but this one is hard to follow cause it's vertical. I am sure it was a mistake so this isn't me complaining lol. anyway.thanks for all the vids.
nice instructional video but are hand dredges not illegal in bc?
Great video Dan were you a shop teacher in another life
wonder if you could modify a old bike pump to make the same thing, peace
Great idea I'll have to try this
Why do the nozzles leak?
High energy guy, but great to see hes teaching :)
Thanks!
Hey Dan, Who was that imposter? Thank you for the really good info.
Very cool! What do you think the cost of this build?
+I DIG HISTORY Guessing $10-$15
Why the need for black PVC for the suction tube instead of regular white PVC? Curious.
Do you still use these ever? I'm thinking about making one
Cannot see your first 2 parts there buckaroo... I wanna build a sucker. So I have to move along.
Hey Dan, I have a question with regards to the crevice sucker, what thickness of leather are you using because I can not find anything here on the island. I have got some from a upholstery place but it just does not seal. Any thoughts as to what i might be doing wrong. cheers
A fairly thick leather is required. I got mine through Tandy leather
@@Danhurd Thanks Dan greatly appreciated
Rubber works, too. Or use two-three thicknesses of leather.
Old cheap wide belt ( leather)
Try a bilge or float pump for airplanes put a smaller nozzle for more suction force and discharge into a bucket VOYLA (FR)
At about the 30 second mark, you mention a 1.5" to .75" piece... what is its technical name? I looked at Home Depot online and couldn't find anything like it. Thanks!
Also, any chance of putting up parts lists for this (and your other builds)? Thanks again! I wish I'd had this class at my high school!
1 1/2 ABS to 3/4 NPT reducer I think. Might need the go to a plumbing supply store depending on how well stocked your HD is. My HD probably would not have that.
How thick is the leather?
How about cutting the plastic wood stuff in half, or using two of them & sandwich the leather washer in between?
That was way to fast lol..... can you let me know the sizes of everything and everything needed? thanks. Love your vids!
Use the pause and back buttons, write down what he says.
Does the tube have to be black?
Dan ,, Ive heard of you . people say you were born with a ounce of gold in each nostril now here is my question .. that crack sucker you make . do you know of a flapper or a one way that can be set up in their where you can run a catch off to the side where a hose can be attached and ran to a catch bucket ? I believe a collapsible hose would work for this , I have a feeling I may be spending a lot of time up in that area . after I get out of this hell hole they call Texas , after 4 years here I am ready for a bone chilling winter ..
+Lucky B I have tried one way flapper valves, but they keep getting rocks stuck in the seal and therefore not sealing and completely destroying the suction.
Dan ....... thank you for getting back to me I appreciate it ,, keep em sharp ,, and happy Digging ,,
Dan ..HELP ... I need a list ...so I can build this pleaseeeee ...need to make one .. can’t. Seem to buy one here in ns 😢... love love videos.. new biggest fan ..sending love Nova Scotia Canada 🇨🇦
Is that ABS or schedle 80 PVC?
Nevermind....jesus...amazing videos.
Got hand saws man?
Why use leather on the plunger as opposed to rubber?
10:50 a nylock or locking nut might work better than a lock washer
1:25 Don't do as I do. Do as I say. Lol
Rubber gaskets?
How do you use that tool
I have a couple of videos on how to use that tool
Dan HELP!! I have a very good problem!! I have come across a bedrock crack about 5ft long & 4.5 inches wide. I have sucked materiel out of it using my Gold N Sand suction hand dredge which I modified by sticking a section of automotive rubber hose where the tips normally go. I can't go any longer than the plunger will allow. With the length I have already, I can't get to the bottom of this crevice!! I pulled some mad gold out of it so far. One piece was 0.14 gram, NICE!! HELP!! What can I do to go deeper??? I can stick a 5' pry bar down inside this crevice all the way up to the top of the bar!!
That's a good problem! Can you break the bedrock away from the crack?
I'm thinking not on this one. The back wall starts above water. It's a sheer solid face that goes down 4'+. The front wall is down at the 4' underwater level and what I stand on, also very solid. Maybe build a longer crevice sucker? I have footage of it but, I'm not ready to post it on my channel. I want to finish first. Thank you so much for your reply Dan.
@ 8:20....you already know the outside diameter of the pipe...just cut 2" leather circles.
Nevermind.
No one has tried dredging the GG. The bedrock riffles are exposed by the currents sluicing through at three plus knots when the tide is running. There is about a one to two hour window when the current slows down enough to work.
The second challenge is that the depth is over 300ft. Diver tending is impossible.
The third is that this is right smack dab in the middle of a busy shipping channel: you need a vessel even the ships would go around as a matter of course. Something so iconic that it wouldn't be examined. I've an old wooden Monterey-style salmon boat. I have the davits and lead and retriever cable already rigged with hydraulics. I can tie a compressor into my diesel for an air riser system. I don't have a salmon season for two years.
Care to try something a little crazy?
same as a bike pump show us a video with two one way check valves
nice watching ur videos! (Y)
Thanks!
Do you have a material list?
Is this why the magpie has gone there?
Or you can buy a 98¢ water blaster at Wal-Mart and drill the hole bigger.
How much can i buy one of these from you for?
Would love a Dan Hurd hand dredge i'd be getting some use out of it for sure working those crevices!
Why my high school did not have this kind of class..... dream class
Much easier to place the 2”. Pipe on top of a tennis ball and mark all the way around the tennis ball. Then cut with a sharp box cutter. Drill hole in center. Drill hole in cap. I then glued a1/4 x 20 lick nut inside with with two part epoxy.
I drill a hole through the the side of the caps and put a short screw into it so it can’t pop off. When attaching the tennis ball I use a washer behind the head of the bolt.
Or you can use a watergun with the same function :)
In aus we call it a yabbi pump
14:29 That kids face in the background.
Parts list?
Pause, rewind a few seconds, write down.
he hit the metal
Did anyone else think "Oreo!" at 10.35?
Or you can go to REI and buy a Kayak bilge pump.
