It makes so much sense though... He was dreaming of being an actor.. the way they all talked about how if you've not made it by 18, you've failed. He was assuming he's laying the groundwork for his memoars! Wild!
“We’re not walking, we’re falling and catching ourselves” sounds exactly the same as Courtney’s leaning to the left because their favorite things tend to be over there
I'm here to praise Amanda's journals for one reason: They feel so unfiltered and genuine, it's like you're really getting the full Amanda Lehan-Canto experience.
Same, and he has pretty good taste in books too! I've been trying to get out of a years' long reading slump and I've been using all of the book reccs from these videos as a jumping off point 🖤
I don’t think people understand the amount of people that are the “common man”, people who work 9-5 & live check to check, lost everything. It’s not just celebrities and rich people. Unfortunately my friend and her family also lost their homes due to the fires in LA. It’s so true that at this point it seems like everyone knows at least one friend / family who lost their home due to these fires. But seeing multiple communities come together to help LA, absolutely beautiful to see humanity doing its thing.
As someone who lived through the western NC floods I can say that nothing like this feels real until you drive through it. your brain tries so hard to disconnect and it makes it hard to process. Seeing people help is the best part and it's what you have to hold onto when things get tough. Also, shut out the rest of the worlds opinions, they don't and won't understand the scale of the devastation. 'Look for the people helping' is the motto to cling to as you work through the long phases of recovery. ❤
thank you kindly for sharing. living in nc as well, i truly appreciate the resilience you illustrate so beautifully. i’m also grateful for your reminder of the incredible kindness and support that emerged in response to the flooding. i wholeheartedly agree that shining a light on those who support one another can offer a ray of hope amidst the heartbreak. have a beautiful day
i love that shayne reads such a diverse spread of books! i feel like a lot of people end up trapping themselves into one genre or only read books written by people who belong to the same groups as them when there's sooo many incredible books in all sorts of genres and from all different people.
2:50 I was a baby during hurricane katrina and most of my baby photos were destroyed. The Mississippi gulf coast was almost wiped off the earth. So I’m sending lots of love from MS because we know what it’s like to have almost everything destroyed and then having to rebuild afterwards.
Shayne needs to create a goodreads or storygraph account asap, or there has to be a session on the podcast about his reading. As someone who reads 40 to 50 books a year as well, I just have to say it is time-consuming, but so rewarding 🥰
Amanda, I totally get it. When I'm feeling anxious but can't really do anything to help it, I instantly go to horror/thriller/crime types of movies and shows. It's a way to kind of reset your nervous system. It's not the same, but it's similar to people who work out when they're anxious or plunge their face and hands into ice water.
James, The Poppy War, Nettle & Bone and Kazuo Ishiguro? What a lineup to start the year! As a bookworm I love when Shayne talks about books and bookish stuff, I really like his taste from what I've heard. He really inspires me to read more again, because recently I sometimes struggle with reading slumps. Also, LOVE the dim lighting, cat-in-bed, 5am ambience he ended up creating for himself.
As someone that lived through, and lost almost everything in the Australian fires of 2020. My heart goes out to you guys. Mother nature is terrifying, and im glad you guys are safe.
I’m glad you guys didn’t have to evacuate. My heart goes out to you guys and people in LA for trying to get by and Smosh did that helpful drive event. You guys are Troopers.❤️
If Shayne ever writes a book about his life he definitely should include the journal entries as a way to move the story forward over a large time skip! he most certainly has the talent to make a wonderful author. Plus he’s an avid reader. They make “in my mind at least” the best books because they can understand what makes for a good reading experience for the consumer. . . . Glad everyone at smosh is safe, hopefully all of Los Angeles soon will be as well. The fact that any of you wrote as much as you did is astounding to me.
Love journal readings! Such a vulnerable thing to share but so relatable. Even with how differently they write and lived, it's so genuine. Shayne not being genuine is relatable as well. I also get those "thinking someone will read them" feelings. Really cool getting the insight to his iCarly role as well... Hearing the names mentioned and knowing more now in hindsight is wild. This wicked rocked!
As some one who also reads, Shayne’s having read 5 books so far isn’t crazy. Thank you Shayne for the positive example of understated anti-anti intellectualism… and best of luck for the rest of the year!
Shane, you don’t have to start a new journal to switch it up. Glue two pages together and start anew. You also don’t have to finish your journal. You’re allowed to start a new one in a new style, and you can still go back to the older one. I’d recommend starting fresh to motivate you until you find your groove. I’m sure there will be a time in your life where playing catch-up periodically will serve you again and you can go back to that old journal at that time. There’s no rules, bud. Whip out that journal. Edit- Oh good, Selena knows! I had a feeling it would be Selena lol ❣️
I don't know if it's related but at the end of July to around August 2024, our government shut off our internet for about a week under a dictatorial leader and I had some Smosh videos downloaded offline on my RUclips account on two phones plus some recommended downloads because I have premium. Watching those videos honestly kept me from going fully insane. I just wanted to say thank you to Smosh for making me feel better during these trying times.❤ Sending love and prayers for L.A and its residents.
Amanda’s journals are exactly how mine were 😭 I went back and read them after the first journal read and I was shocked at how I wrote a flow of random things that were so embarrassing haha
shayne was so cute it literally brought tears to my eyes hearing him read out his words and how anxious and insecure he felt. i wish i could go back and time and hug him
Its so funny comparing Countrys diary entrys and then Shaynes journal entry 😂 So completely different people that ended up together Imagine those 2 highschool selves together
dude when Shayne read out september 25th I got like a little excited (it's just the day I was born) and then he says "today was awful" lmao 😭😭 anyway ignoring that, I love how he wrote his entries like a novel 😭it's so silly
Hope everything gets better soon!! I'm from the south of Brazil, and last year we had the worst floods ever, and the same thing happened, everybody knew someone who had lost their house... but, at the same time, everybody was helping with charity. Thank you, smosh, for always making me laugh! I hope you guys can laugh without these worries soon!
i was in the 2019 i think Sonoma County fires that ripped through several towns in California. It was so devastating, so many people I know lost everything. Thankfully my family and I was lucky to not have lost everything. We did have to evacuate though and it was terrifying to just drive down the highway and see trees actively burning around you. So many historical sights were gone and there are many areas still that haven't rebuilt still so many years later. As someone whose gone through what everyone has gone though, my heart and prayers go out to y'all.
Thank you, Smosh, for being a light in the midst of darkness. ❤️ Your hard work shines through in how you consistently show up for your audience and support those affected by the fires. We love you for everything you do!
Julien solomita who also lives in LA has a rlly genius prep solution of a go bag , it has everything you need to pick up and go safely without thinking too hard , i think this event rlly shows how vital it is to be ready for general disasters
As someone who had to evacuate a couple times being from florida because of hurricanes it’s still nerve racking figuring whats important to take and we definitely make light (hurricane parties and swimming during the eye) cause being scared and waiting just feels worse in the moment
As someone who lives in the NorCal forest and have witnessed this multiple times, my heart goes out to LA and it breaks my heart watching people go through this. There’s firefighters from up here that witnesses paradise, king, and Caldor and still sprang to action to help down there. When they were talking about downloading watch duty and seeing videos of the helicopters dumping water it kind of shocked me there’s still people in California who haven’t experienced that before. It’s a surreal experience and I hope it’s over for them soon.
Last year we had historical floods where i live, it was the same feeling of everyone knew at least one person who had lost everything, people were being rescued from their homes by boat, everyone was volunteering at the shelters. It was so scary and honestly traumatizing. I feel so much for people in LA, and i hope everyone who was affected can recover as soon as possible. Stay safe everyone 🤍🤍
I started journaling at about 17 years old. I’m 30 now and I’m on my 3rd or 4th journal! It’s actually awesome to look back and see how much I’ve changed, especially with the improvements to my mental health and wellbeing.
I’m really glad to hear you’re all safe and didn’t end up having to evacuate. I cant imagine how scary it is to be on stand by constantly just waiting to see if you have to leave your home or not. Thank you as always for giving us something to distract ourselves with. The whole Smosh team means a lot to all of us and we’re very thankful for your work
Amanda’s journal made me feel so much better about my own journals! Although I couldn’t finish a journal to save my life! I kept getting new ones! Mostly as gifts, but still!
i just finished reading a memoir from a titanic survivor who worked on the ship. she’s the most fascinating person i’ve ever heard of and Amanda (and honestly, Shayne too) needs to read this book. it’s called Titanic Survivor by Violet Jessop. she’s one of my favorite historical figures of all time. 10/10.
I can see how Shayne can go through all these book. My job is editing audio books and the average 350 page book takes 9-10 hrs to read aloud. If you're a fast reader, you can likely get through a book in 7-8 hrs
When I 1st read the Harry Potter book...it wasn't until they were all out. I went through all 7 in 8 days. When you're on a mission, you can go thru em for sure.
I work in a library and I've been seeing "James" come in and out like clockwork. Two patrons told me personally how much they loved it so I may have to reserve that next.
The alert thing reminds me of something (a system) we use at my job to communicate with our guests, it has options to filter to destination certain hotels or flights and once a year we have someone who is new who just accidentally sends something to the whole destination instead of one hotel, it's my biggest nightmare to be that person 😅😂
As someone who has experienced so many different types of natural disasters (hurricanes, tornados, wild fires, floods, blizzards) my heart absolutely breaks for you guys. My prayers have been being sent to La this whole time. And about the journaling with prompts, I love journaling with the journal app on my iPhone as well bc you can free write or get prompts. I love a journal but that motivates me too!
You guys inspired me to start journaling about 6 months go. It has definitely helped me feel more in touch with my emotions and have a better understanding of myself. Thank you guys for always finding a way to make my life better!
Thank you so much for still posting, even throughout these fires. You guys care that much about your fan base and it shows. But prioritize your health!!!!!! We appreciate you guys so much 🫶
I've been journaling consistently for a little over three years now and I love seeing other people talking about their own habits and practices! I would love to sit down and talk about journaling like y'all did, this was awesome
Their talk about journals made me think of gifts my husband and I got for our kids on Christmas. He and our daughter are very artistic so they have a "Draw with Me" journal where they each add pieces of a drawing. Our son and I like to write so we have a "Mother and Son" journal that we fill out the prompts and pass back and forth.
If anyone is looking for a daily planner/journal, I cannot recommend the Hobonichi Cousin enough. I’ve been using it daily for three years after struggling to finish journals my whole life.
I'm one of those weirdos that read hundreds of books in a year. I've never been able to explain why I read so fast, but I do. Anyway, I love when Shayne talks about reading anywhere. I learn about books I might not have seen. Thanks!
re: reading the diary of a random historical person I'm currently reading The Pillow Book, aka the quick thoughts notebook of Sei Shonagon, a 10th/11th century lady serving at the japanese imperial court. it's sooo cool, I cannot recommend it enough if you're a curious person! the only downside is that the entries are quite random, so you never know how long you'll read before getting bored. some sections are recollections of events, while others are just enumerations of different things, like rivers, that she remembers, or what things are cringe and what not.
I live in a forested area with semi-frequent fires and I understand how terrifying and uprooting it can feel to be told to pack what is important to you. It must be even worse since you guys don't live in a place where this is expected. Stay safe and don't forget to help the people close to you!
Shayne needs to be complimented on his brain more. His intelligence and talent for writing at such a young age is so interesting for me. Especially since we usually see goofy Shayne but seeing introspective/inside voice Shayne feels new
Listening to them read their journals makes me feel like I would get along with their younger selves really well. I was concerned about Amanda at first…until she went on that rabbit trail about what the “it’s raining, it’s pouring” song was about. After that, I related to her to an *extreme* level. 😂💛
I cannot make this up: As I’m driving on my way to work listening to Shayne and Amanda talk about the fires in LA, I (in Petaluma, CA, several hours north of LA), look to my left as I enter a sea of smoke that soon revealed a home engulfed in flames (unironically next door to the Yoga Hell). I’m happy that they let me through so that I could work with my client. Stay safe, everyone.
Shayne writing his journal entries like he's the main character in a first pov ya novel is sending me
It makes so much sense though... He was dreaming of being an actor.. the way they all talked about how if you've not made it by 18, you've failed. He was assuming he's laying the groundwork for his memoars! Wild!

It’s always a treat to see Selina in front of the camera, she has such a silly and quick wit sense of humor, she’s like Olivia mixed with Spencer
Excellent comparison
The harambe picture above Amanda will always be hilarious
Amanda's journal entries make me understand why she said that teenage Amanda and teenage Ian would probably not be friend.
Amanda’s journal entries are taking me OUTTT LMAOO
I love it when Shayne talks books. He has so many choices that I wouldn't pick but the way he describes them makes me want to read them!

babe wake up, the esoteric texts containing another banger, another banger by shayne from icarly have been unearthed
My wife keeps all our pictures and documents in one of those accordion folders. Bless her 😂
I'm one of those weirdos that read hundreds of books in a year. I've never been able to explain why I read so fast, but I do. Anyway, I love when Shayne talks about reading anywhere. I learn about books I might not have seen. Thanks!
re: reading the diary of a random historical person
I'm currently reading The Pillow Book, aka the quick thoughts notebook of Sei Shonagon, a 10th/11th century lady serving at the japanese imperial court. it's sooo cool, I cannot recommend it enough if you're a curious person! the only downside is that the entries are quite random, so you never know how long you'll read before getting bored. some sections are recollections of events, while others are just enumerations of different things, like rivers, that she remembers, or what things are cringe and what not.
Thanks for speaking about the fires. I was deeply worried about y'all and I'm so glad you came through it.
I cannot make this up:
As I’m driving on my way to work listening to Shayne and Amanda talk about the fires in LA, I (in Petaluma, CA, several hours north of LA), look to my left as I enter a sea of smoke that soon revealed a home engulfed in flames (unironically next door to the Yoga Hell). I’m happy that they let me through so that I could work with my client. Stay safe, everyone.
After listening to Shane reading his journals, I feel confident, that someday he will write a beautiful book.
The last episode motivated me to start daily journaling because i want to remember my youth. Excited for what this episode will bring :)
The Poppy War was such a good book. I finished the first one and immediately went to the bookstore to buy the rest
