Oof, yeah. I found Loch Lomond to be the toughest part of the WHW because of the constant ups and downs and how uneven it is underfoot. What helped me was a quick, cold, plunge into the loch itself! Reset my brain and helped me appreciate where I was and what I was doing!

Hi Fergus. Am recently one of your new subscribers. Your definitely a inspiration. Silly me i signed up for a half marathon in August for charity. I have no running experience and have asthma too. I do a lot of hillwalking which helps my asthma. I have signed up to couch to 5k to help me get started. Have you got any tips about getting started running? Keep up the good work. Really enjoying your videos.
    Take care

It's not the bit from Rowardennan onwards you need to worry about, it's the bit from Inversnaid hotel to the end of the loch that's the most challenging.

I average one a day of those Graham's Protein 'Yoghurts'. I've tried all the flavours. My main gripe is the lack of consistency in texture between flavours and also sometimes between the same flavour. It can be far too thick or far too runny. I've found the most consistent one in terms of both flavour and texture to be the chocolate caramel.

Have you recced the northern part of Loch Lomond yet? From what I remember of my failed WHW attempt back in 2020 the path gets rockier as you head north with the section between Inversnaid and Ardleish being borderline un-runnable at times (although overtaking some bike packers carrying their pannier laden bikes on this section did make me feel better about my situation). After that it's good paths the rest of the way to Ben Nevis, just good to be mentally prepared to walk a fair chunk of that northern Loch Lomond section - I hadn't recced that bit before my attempt and got a bit caught out!

It's remarkable how you can consume low-quality food sources and still continue to perform without experiencing inflammation. Perhaps this insight could benefit you as well! Asthma is primarily an inflammation issue, characterised by swelling, increased mucus production, and airway narrowing, leading to breathing difficulties. While triggers like allergens and irritants are well-known, nutritional interventions are often overlooked. Research suggests that reducing fiber, resistant starch, and processed foods may alleviate inflammation in the large intestine, potentially improving asthma symptoms. During exercise, poor digestion due to reduced blood flow to the digestive system can increase the risk of gastrointestinal symptoms and inflammation. Therefore, avoiding these foods before exercise may help minimise digestive issues and prevent inflammation from worsening asthma symptoms. Hence, sticking to whole food sources that are easily digestible is advisable. This becomes increasingly important with age and training volume. Best of luck in your race, and I hope this advice proves helpful to you.

    • @ferguscrawley95
      @ferguscrawley95  3 месяца назад +3

Very much aware of all of this and great insights for comments section my man, but enough whole foods (that are low in fibre, and not fat dominant) that are both practical and palatable for multiple days without sleep simply do not exist - and this is the only time I’ve struggled with my asthma during aerobic exercise in several years hence why I flagged it as odd, and it started before I’d even covered 1km.
As with S&C as well, research is only useful when applied to specific context - professional triathletes, for example, aren’t relying on whole foods during races for many valid reasons. Does this mean that they live off processed, easy to consume foods out with races/training? Absolutely not, nor do I - but practicality and ease of consumption comes above all else for sustained endurance performance, not food quality. Whereas the opposite is true for day-to-day life/fuelling shorter events 🙌🏼
Thank you for well wishes (and hope above doesn’t come across as argumentative at all having just reread it! Just wanted to highlight context at play 🤝) and hope the open went well 🫡

      Thanks for your reply.
I enjoy watching your journey, and I appreciate you sharing your experience. It's remarkable how unexpected challenges can ignite profound growth and transformation. I often liken these sudden challenges to the "tsunami effect," illustrating the overwhelming nature of such obstacles.
Throughout life's journey, we may encounter periods of smooth sailing, only to be blindsided by illness during times of heightened physical, emotional, and environmental stress. These unforeseen health issues can disrupt our lives and compel us to reassess our strategies for both fitness and overall well-being.
I, too, experienced years of uninterrupted health before inflammation unexpectedly surged while preparing for an event. This compelled me to pivot and revaluate my approach to life and fitness. Despite the initial setback, I came to realise that this change was not merely a challenge but a gift. It ultimately empowered me to emerge feeling stronger and more resilient than ever before.
This journey underscores the importance of adapting our narratives to foster personal growth and adaptation. Additionally, it's crucial to emphasise that whole food options are far superior to processed alternatives, even if they may seem inconvenient at first. Processed foods often contain fillers, preservatives, additives, and indigestible ingredients that are detrimental to our well-being and can cause inflammation.
If you're seeking ideas, I'm more than happy to share some that have proven effective for me. Transitioning to whole foods may require effort and adjustment, but the long-term benefits for your health and well-being are truly immeasurable.
I really believe it's worth considering after this event. I understand it might be too close to changing your strategy, and it's probably better to stick with what you know and feel comfortable with for now.
Research has shown that reducing inflammation is key to endurance, energy, and mitochondrial respiration. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Physiology demonstrated that reducing inflammation through dietary interventions can enhance endurance performance and improve mitochondrial function (Trappe et al., 2008). This underscores the importance of adopting an anti-inflammatory diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods to support endurance performance.
Thank you once again for sharing your journey. @@ferguscrawley95
