Been out running in sub-zero (Celsius) conditions recently and enjoying most of it!! Hardest part is getting out the door. I actually enjoy being warm enough at the start when it’s that cold, I don’t sweat as much and it’s more about comfortable running than pushing it.

  • @tirvplumbing

18km done yesterday wee bit above zone 2. Warmest I've been in days 🤣 normally a wee bit cold in house trying to keep the smart meter from giving me a heart attack.
Mentally I find the hardest part is getting out, once I get started I'm fine. Its overcoming that initial inertia especially on the 6am midweek sessions this time of year when it's warm under the blankets.

@@DaraHes the quick and dirty formula is below 180-your age. There's a few formulas out there. Fergus has a video on it as well, I'm sure he'll link it if he spots your comment. I typically shoot for 5 beats above 180-my age seems to work for me.

The trail/track suggestion is a good one. I flip it though, and do the track in the winter, to reduce mud accumulation. Did 5K, at the track today, for example. It had warmed up to a foggy 40deg Fahrenheit, so that was nice. Cheers!

Excellent message! I'm not a runner, I'm starting a couch to 5K program. But doing it for the first 3 weeks in --5 to -10°C was just what I needed for the winter blues. As soon as the temperature reached 2 or 3 degrees, I felt superhuman. Thank you for your content!

Any tips for running in the snow/ -10°/-15° and ice? My feet stay warm in my normal Brooks' but I feel the multiple thin layers I'm wearing are restricting my movement+ wearing two leggings has me practically unable to practice good belly breathing 😕 If it was around 0° degrees I'd wear much less but it's just much colder right now...Tips would be very much appreciated!

For past 2 years I have run shirtless all year round. People think I am either mad or a show off. Honestly even in sub zero temperatures I never get cold. I put hat and gloves on and upper body moderates its temperature so quickly. I tried wearing t shirt one winters day and was way way colder. I would highly recommend people to try it. After the first 30 seconds your body accepts it.. very odd but it works. Only down side get very very odd looks especially in -5 ....oh and dont stop thats when the cold can set in very quickly

What fits your feet and are comfortable. Folk tend to find a brand that is right and then become very loyal. Most important thing is lugs and plates and whatever. Road shoes for roads, trails for trails and mud lugs for mud. Sounds obvious but the number of folk I pass on trails running and struggling with road shoes is comedy. Personally I loving inov8 trailfly ultras. Outlasting anything I have used before and the first wider inov8
