    When we had our welcome drinks at my uni faculty, as a first year, I ended up talking to the most senior professor in the department, someone internationally renowned, and confessed to my Imposter Syndrome, his answer: “I feel like that every day.”

      Absolutely! All that doubt creeps in and you doubt yourself. It's very uncomfortable to keep moving forward but also stay in the same place once you reach this place. It's almost better to not get started, hence very few people get through it. :)

    I’ve owned dozens of companies over 4 decades since I was 14. NEVER felt like a fraud & I’ve developed unique creative resources my entire life.
    One would be correct that “practicing fly fishing without the hook is bad practice given the weight is different & given their is zero chance you’ll have the opportunity to catch you have reduced your true skill” - Brilliant observation by Me. It is true to be focused on the practice rather than the goal - but one needs to understand only CERTAIN means lead to CERTAIN ends.

      Trial and error practice until one has analyzed which proper practice works for each one, from simple to complicated; like singing soft every day and then in the competition one would try to sing really good, instead learn how to sing and do the proper practice without doubt or assuming that there is only one way to sing.

      I am lucky enough to live in a land with an abundance of fishing lakes yet most fly fishers practice their skills on dry land. Ps the weight of a fly fishing hook is minuscule.

      Combined with more general literacy, perhaps unsurprisingly, self-help books started to become popular during the Great Depression.
      Their authors had no qualms about distilling the most salient advice and observations down to 150 pages often shorter. Today there’s a minimum word-count expectation to justify price and publication and you read this everywhere: that a great book has a handful of wonderful/useful observations but they’re buried like truffles underneath thousands of needless words of padding.

    • @rexjantze296
      @rexjantze296 3 года назад

      @@michaeljames4904 Sure. But some people are only convinced when example after example is presented coherently and, to our annoyance, garrulously. For us, we only need a few minutes of explaining key concepts before we're off and running. Since there is often an "ecology" to even a simple concept, authors are required (unofficially) to flesh out their ideas to the greatest amount of topological reach. But this does give other re-creators a chance to monetize their ability to summarize, though often what is missed or misunderstood is that ecological root and canopy system that the idea flourishes in.

    This is good but I'm not sure I remember if Seth made any steps towards quantifying what ought to be "good" work. While it is usually difficult to guess where the process of regular shipping will take you, you better have some sort of idea about the goal/state you'd like to reach eventually and if that is a worthwhile investment of your time. Do you actually want to become a great fisher? Or a new yorker illustrator? And is that going to be beneficial for you in the future? If not, then you should probably not implement such a process and spend thousands of hours.
