I stayed at this truck stop on I-80 during a blizzard in 2008, this Texas boy was ready to head back south. Gaynor our sleeping quarters are like a condo on wheels.
My dad was a long haul trucker when I was growing up. I went on a few trips with him when school was out, things like that. I loved it. He never took any of my sisters, but I could keep my mouth shut and not chatter, and hold my bladder! ) I remember stopping at that truck stop on one trip or another across the country. I suppose American truckers can relate a bit to European ones when they have to drive in New York City. My husband's friend just recently retired from doing exactly that and he said that when you have a delivery in Manhattan, you get a delivery time - not a window - and it's your job to navigate traffic and get to that loading dock at that precise time or you'd have to park your butt in a motel outside the city and reschedule, sometimes as long as 4 or 5 days! Truckers are never given leeway to take their time getting to the dock. When we traveled as a family, we always ate at truck stops when possible, as Dad firmly believed you got the best food for the best price and you wouldn't be wasting time. Even on a family vacation, it was all about "making good time," for my father! :)
It was probably a good call not serving 300+ truckers beans for breakfast. Traveling hundreds of miles in a fart can doesn't sound like the best way to start your day.
I live about 45 minutes away from this place. I have never eaten there (my brothers have), but I do have memories of going there at around 11 pm and just walking around the place. I also have bought Christmas presents for my mom here. Really cool place if you ever find yourself driving through Iowa on I80. Also Pork is incredibly popular here in Iowa. We are also famous for our pork tenderloins.
Many drivers take their kids over the summer holiday. Because what my brother had told me is that companies don't allow them to take family members during the winter months because of the chance of accidents. Plus many drivers have dogs especially women drivers. The trucks have lower and upper bunks plus other amenities.
That one trucker who said he’d already traveled 650 miles that day. I had to look it up but, the distance from tip of N Scotland to southernmost tip of England 875 miles.That’s crazy to consider! I wonder how they did during the ‘plandemic’? I wish I’d known about this place when I drove it! However, you two were talking about your Highway being dangerous. Hwy 80 is a VERY horrible and dangerous highway because these massive rigs think they OWN the road (and I’m a very polite driver, no tickets or accidents in 50 ish years). I got run off the highway going 75ish (normal), pushed by a semi into the median TWICE by truckers not paying attention (the old change lanes first, then signal crap). Really have to drive defensively….especially in winter with snow and ice. I will NEVER drive it again! Great show though here, thanks!
@@alexrodgers9247 Not to defend those a**hole truckers, but a lot of the amateur motorists do stupid crap as well. I do agree about I-80, especially in Wyoming during winter time. That's why I don't go into Wyoming during the winter. I'm likely to get stuck there for a week due to highway closures and lose profit. No thanks.
Sounds like the UK needs to bite the bullet and upgrade their long distance roadways with more routes and more lanes. It never ceases to amaze me how you have these problems and never fix them.
I don’t think they’ll ever have the demand. Most of the shipping conducted in the UK is done via maritime shipping to various ports. They are never going to have to go over land very far. Due to the vast size of the US and Canada, our countries are much more reliant on overland shipping. And that is still taking into account the vast navigable riverway systems in the US, and the Great Lakes. I think a vast interstate or Autobahn-like highway system would be as impractical for the UK as public transportation is for most of North America.
Iowa 80 in Walcott, IA does have that restaurant, but they also have a food court inside as well, with Taco Bell, Wendy's, Pizza Hut Express, and a few other restaurants. They also have a Blimpies sub shop (another version of Subway) in the fuel island where the trucks stop to get fuel. They have really nice showers, a chiropractor, a theater, a place for you pet(s) I believe, laundry facility, etc. They also have a trucking museum, which has on display all of the very old trucks from the early 1900's and onward. It tells the history of the interstate system and Iowa 80 itself. You also mentioned about Buc-ee's not having showers for drivers; Buc-ee's does not permit any truckers on their property. They have signs out saying No Trucks. If a semi truck even parks across the street from a Buc-ee's, an employee or manager will likely come out and tell that driver they have to leave or they will be towed. Buc-ee's does NOT like truckers at all. At least that's how they're perceived within the trucking community. To Gaynor's point about kids coming along, it definitely does happen all the time. Either during summer vacation or they're home schooled on the truck. It can be a rough lifestyle at times but it can also be very adventurous. For a trucker to drive solo across the country, it would typically take about 4, maybe 5 days, depending. That's why a lot of carriers tend to hire teams (Two drivers) to do cross country loads. Cut that time in half.
No biscuits and gravy for breakfast??? Wtf?! Lol Truck stop food is always good!! I imagine most, if not all of these truckers have been driving all night so they probably have breakfast and take a nap. I've heard of people having heart attacks while driving, but not truck drivers. Hmmmmm... might as well have some biscuits and gravy 😋
meatloaf....my recipe from an actual line cook...Ground Beef, eggs, Italian bread crumbs, worchester sauce, garlic powder (not garlic salt), onion powder, green pepper, onion, little mortons nature blend seasoning...mix all up, form your loaf or loves.....on top I just use straight up ketchup but not a thick ole layer and sprinkle some brown sugar on that bad boy, bake in in oven 350 degrees....enjoy with a side of mash taters and gravy or mikes homemade mac and cheese that I also have a awesome recipe for.....proportions of specific ingredients will vary based on volume amount being cooked obviously
Buc-ees Isn't a truck stop. Sad, but they don't do the big trucks there. It's mainly for those who are driving their personal vehicles and for Family traffic.

IM a cook as well. YES Sausage MOST likely pre cooked in high volume breakfast places. He should be wearing gloves though since he's handling raw food in some cases. In my state thats a serious Health Department critical violation. Also in general gross as hell lol lol

Telling the servers to hold off on orders was like trying to tell a crackhead to calm down
My uncle was a trucker. He would take his kid for a week or two during school vacations or during the summer. It’s a great way to see America.

Semi trucks aren’t allowed in Bucees. That’s why they don’t have the shower facilities like normal truck stops.
