The animatronics at Disneyland have always been a huge inspiration for us. Now that Steamboat Willie is in the public domain, we’re celebrating by turning the Steamboat Willie style Mickey Mouse into a terrifying animatronic monster!
From horror games like ‘Five Nights at Treasure Island’, ‘Captain Willie’, and ‘Infestation’, to upcoming scary movies ‘Mickey’s Mouse Trap’ and ‘The Return of Steamboat Willie’, there’s a bunch of people who are jumping on the chance to make their own Mickey Mouse horror character. There’s a ton of ways we could have made a scary Mickey Mouse, and we didn’t want to re-create any of the ones already out there. We recently finished building our own animatronic Springtrap, and we really love the withered style of the Five Nights at Freddy’s animatronics, so we decided to create our horror Mickey in the FNAF style.
To make Mickey’s head we commissioned a 3D artist, Beardless Props, and worked with them to design a printable 3D model of Mickey, complete with broken bits, holes, and animatronic mounting points. We designed a 3-axis animatronic head mechanism that would let Mickey move his head in all directions, and we even gave him an animatronic jaw. Mickey’s head was finished with Bondo, paint, and flocking, and we gave him some creepy red glowing eyes.
This was our first from-scratch advanced DIY animatronic project, and while we definitely had our share of struggles, we’re really happy with how it turned out. We’re going to keep working on him, and maybe even give him a body, so if you want to follow along with our progress check us out on Patreon. And let us know what you want to see us build next!

I like the symbolic idea of steamboat mickey being a creature who was just kind of abandoned and not upkept just because disney didnt want the public to get their hands on him so he has gotten no maintinence because no one has been allowed to touch him for 70 years

Disneyland Animation Machinist here. Your building process is pretty spot on. Granted we have ridiculously highend parts (smaller than a football, more expensive than my truck) but at the end of the day its all nuts, bolts, and an energy source. Love watching you guys make stuff. I wanna make this just to put it in my shop to mess with my managers lol.

The unintentional movements of the eyes and the jarredness of the head movement from how heavy the head was actually worked so well with the believability - such an awesome build!!
I think his head being so heavy actually worked to your advantage! The way he tosses it around with all that momentum gives it an extra unsettling and lifelike feel. Really awesome work!

@@WickedMakersWe begin with Faster Than a Speeding Bullet playing in the background, with a Garage door opening revealing RED Scout and his teammates about to ambush the BLU Team. Preparing for the battle, as the camera moves from right to left, Scout studies the scenario, on where their opponents are. He then reloads his Scattergun as his teammates charge in. He then joins the charge, dodging several bullets. After using his firearms, we then skip to a cut to where Scout rushes into a building on a railroad, with a BLU Soldier and Pyro tailing him. Just as he jumped to cross the said railroad, a Train quickly barges in and hits both BLU enemies. After which, it cuts to the familiar 'Meet the (Class here)' Intro, and then RED Scout respectively, shows up to assess the "interview". He describes how dangerous he is, as he opposes a Heavy for his Sandvich. At the end, he ends up killing the Heavy with his steel bat, winning the battle and eventually eating the Sandvich. Darn, I was hoping Jaimie would control Mickey off camera at the end and make it seem like Mickey did a little fake out power off, that would have been creepy and funny. Great job though, I look forward to seeing more custom animatronics from you guys!
I would have shifted that neck pivot much more forward. If you're using Solidworks, there's a "mass properties" button that shows you where the center of mass is, and the closer you get your pivot point to that the less stress you put on your parts when moving.
That "Hey can you throw me that ear" transition was insanely smooth

Nightboat Willie:
He will appear from any direction. When he appears, flicker your light and run away to avoid his grasp.
If somebody made a steamboat Willie horror game, this would make an awesome character. (Also to avoid confusion, it wouldn’t be a point and click like 1-4. It would be like 5 and security breach.)
I hope I'm not the only one who appreciates this but I like the fact that you explain how the mechanisms you make work for each animatronic. As a robotics enthusiast and beginner, I can only say that this is wonderful.
Oh man I would LOVE to see a body on him. Maybe you could even program some custom voice lines/sound effects into him (even just like a creepy version of the iconic Steamboat Willie whistling) because I remember you saying something about that a while back.

It looks like there’s a whole story behind him! The characters you guys create are always so detailed and beautiful; I love looking at the finished product and imagining the story behind it. I love the way that the eyes wiggle a bit as it moves. Adds a bit to the destroyed animatronic spookiness!
Mickey Mouse becoming public domain and then several horror games and at least two movies (that I know of) getting announced almost instantly after has been the highlight of my year so far. My local haunter group just had a presentation about how a pan-and-tile mechanism is simpler, more reliable, and better balanced that a full three-axis head, and you probably won't miss the extra degree of freedom. Then boom, Wicked Makers posts a three-axis Steamboat Willie crafted from scratch. Hilarious timing.

Bambu Slicer allows you to do variable layer heights for helping smooth out the tops of spheres. It's definitely decreased print times for me as I set non-detailed areas to a high layer height and detailed areas to a lower. It's super simple to setup!

I'm glad you guys are experimenting more with creating animatronics! Your craftsmanship for special effects makeup and painting is always amazing, but being able to make the animatronics themselves has always been another thing that intrigued me much more, I'm glad you guys are trying to learn a new form of art and expression! Great work overall though, the swift swinging of Willie's head *Even though it wasn't intentional* in my opinion made it SO much better, it really gave it the more realistic life-like look and feeling!
I have two things to say.
That Mickey Mouse head is awesome and I love how the neck is just all wires.
I also have a suggestion, maybe you two might be able to make a Catnap from Poppy Playtime Chapter 3 as an animatronic, kinda like how you made huggy an animatronic.

The ending was so cool even if with a breakdown. It's still cool it's so realistic

I heard that Johny Depp once dressed as Jack Sparrow and performed on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and people thought he was one of the animatronics. That shows how good they are.
I love all your other builds, but I really like this one! I love the fact you didn't take something else and transform to this, you just made this from scratch. Even though in the end it wasn't perfect, this is my favorite build.

The foam you used to make the tongue was most likely upholstery foam! its fairly light and is commonly used for things like fursuits as well! :D

To have your screws fit well into plastic, I highly recommend using threaded inserts. You just heat them up with a heat gun and shove them into plastic, then you can screw your bolts right in
