    Question:
I saw a forum thread on Steam the other day where people were talking about how disabling upscaling entirely actually counterintuitively made the game run smoother. The explanation for this was that DLSS and other upscaling tools essentially take some of the load off of the GPU and makes the CPU compensate for it without significantly sacrificing image quality. With this in mind, knowing DD2's optimization issues are more a CPU problem than a GPU problem, the idea is that taking the extra GPU hit to lighten the load on the CPU will actually make the game run much more stable.
Do you think there's merit to this idea? I intend to try it out when I get home soon, to see if it makes performance better or worse or the same.

There is merit in the idea but it really depends on the graphics card you are using and a few minior factors that are really not talked about, For example, its a huge impact with optimization.
When i run settings "higher" i get better fps. Which in turn would make a person think the gpu is taking more of a load on a cpu bound optimization issue, which what he said in the video
Nvidia reflect on+boost would help relieve cpu bound case loads.

Afaik the "interlaced" rendering mode that the game defaults to is checkerboard rendering and "progressive" is native. DLSS/FSR performance is about the same as interlaced so you won't see much difference in fps when switching between them. I hope they patch the IQ issues with DLSS soon, I don't remember it looking this bad in any game.

  • @ImurTuta

Upscaling effects will cause those. Usually isn’t too bad depending on your settings. Sadly FSR doesn’t get me much difference in performance so I’ve been leaving it off. @ceeka9002 No dlss frame gen is only supported by rtx 4000 series cards. That being said fsr3 frame gen is supported by all cards. There just is no mod for it currently.
Frame generation literally has the gpu generate a fake frame in between frames using the data from the previous and next frame to add more motion. This, in return, adds slight input lag but is very unnoticeable tbh. People hate it cause it's not real frames and was originally only rtx 4000 series cards until amd made fsr3 frame gen.

Your GPU is probably too powerful, so if your settings are too low you’re now CPU limited. Jack up all the settings a heap, turn off dlss etc. Otherwise, if you’re already maxxed out it could just be a driver update/look into getting more ram. You should not be having any issues at 1080p on that computer.

@@oscatMeowa Nah GPU isn’t the problem. It’s just the game is poorly optimized in towns when there are multiple NPCs in an area. Basically the only fix rn is “get the best CPU” until Capcom can optimize the game. I’m on a msi7900xtx/5800x3d and it still tanks fps in town to like 45fps. i run 90 fps without even fsr in open world, then im in town i put everything low too the lowest possible settings with my rx 6800x and ryzen 7 5800x and with fsr enabled, and i just scratched the 30 fps sometimes, with perma stuttering when i move the camera, that game is utterly broken in this main city

I would recommend for any pc In the last 5 years turn off vsynce their implementation is horrible and frame times are all over the place. Use Rivatuner to lock the fps to 45 trust me it's looks smooth and the frame time is smooth as butter. I have the game maxed out with Ray tracing on and it doesn't dip very much at all. I play UW1440p with a 12700k and 7900xt.

    Ryzen 7 5800x
    3080ti
    32gb ddr5 ram
    Monitor is a Samsung QN90C 65"
I pay on 1440 with dlss on quality(theres very very minimal noticeable differences in image quality from full 4k)
I get roughly 100-110fps in open world.
    And 90ish in towns.
Since i have a tv with far better picture and color than any moniter i do enable HDR... without it the frames are roughly the same sometimes higher sometimes lower.

@Ash-dj3gb I'm sure there's some other factors that we don't realize. Like which overall card we have. And how well the cpu and ram work together. Especially with cpu heavy games.
Also should be noted I have a z690 mobo and I'm overclocked.
