Please stop asking why I did not include Kingdom Hearts in the video. This video is not about every single thing the character has been in or every single piece of clothing he has every worn. It is about his design and character evolution in animation and not video games. Just as I don't mention every single short the character has appeared in, I don't mention every single show or movie or game. We would be here for hours. Regardless, the Kingdom Hearts design just takes the Clubhouse design and puts new clothes on him. It's irrelevant to the overall evolution of the character and to the video.
Satanen Perkele I'm not a weaboo and I'm not sensitive. I can stand the thought of it not being on the list. You're really generalizing and making assumptions. And Kingdom Hearts isn't an anime, it's a video game.
D'Mahri Brown I’m referring to Kingdom Hearts III. Donald has appeared in video games since the 1980s. This video is not about the video games. Any Kingdom Hearts appearance is irrelevant.
Alejandra Valles Nope, I did not forget Roadster Races. For the same reason I did not forget Kingdom Hearts. It is a spin-off of Club House, uses the same design and simply puts him in new clothing. It does not represent a character evolution, it represents a character putting on a new change of clothes. It is irrelevant.
Donald Duck is an amazing character because he has many bad character traits; he has a quick temper, he's cowardly, arrogant and he doesn't shy away from scheming. But he also has many good character traits; he cares a lot about his family, he is hard-working, brave and especially in more recent appearances he always sees the error of his bad ways in the end and makes amends. Seeing someone with many bad personality traits overcome them and still do the right thing is really inspiring and what makes him so likeable.
Donald is my favourite Disney character because he is so relatable. He is not perfect by a long shot, but that does not make him a bad person either. I grew up with Disney comics which always fleshed his character out more than cartoon shorts. And in the comics Donald coming around in the end, doing the right thing despite all his faults, well it's been done for ever. Donald Duck comics actually were helpful for me as kid. I often felt like the world hated me tor various things, that what I tried tended to not work out, *and* I had anger issues, so Donald was *extra* relatable to me. So, because he was so relatable, I felt that if I was stuck with his bad traits his good traits were something I thrieved to have, too. Somehow along the way I did overcome the anger issues, but Donald is still the Disney chracater I emphasize with the most.
It's honestly kind of remarkable how little Donald Duck's character design has changed since the 30s (not counting the latest TV shows like DuckTales 2017 and the Mickey Mouse shorts). While a lot of other Disney characters have evolved over the years to fit the time periods, Donald has been overall very consistent in both his animation and comics appearances. To me, Donald has always been the most relatable out of the main trio, since his bad lot in life as well as overall attitude towards it. His struggle through life is probably why he is so popular up in the Nordic countries where I happen to live as well. In terms of overall popularity here, Donald completely dwarfs Mickey and Goofy, which is aided by the fact that Donald's world is far more fleshed out thanks to people like Carl Barks and Don Rosa. Also helps that DuckTales exist, both the 80s and 2017 versions. :)
Donald is especially great in the DuckTales reboot. Huey, Dewey, and Louie exasperate him, but he loves them so much! I think it's great that he took the triplets in after his sister Della"s disappearance. He's overprotective of them at times, but it's easy to understand why. You can also see clearly that Donald misses Della. A lot!
And then she comes home. The current series has the guts to finally answer the question of what ever happened to Della Duck. And they did it spectacularly.
You know Donald has willpower when he takes off in the bullet shaped rocket that Lunaris said “no living thing could’ve survived” and yet when he nearly passes out he just says “the kids” as they are the main reason he escaped: to ensure they were safe.
Donald was always one of my favourite characters probably a bit more than Mickey. I love many of his shows and at most the reboot of DuckTales. I also really love his comics. In the comics it shows more of his personality. In fact that his story is it shows that he’s kind of depressed which really makes sense for his character to have a bit of depression and him it explains his mood swings. I also thought you might’ve mentioned his family in the comics it shows that he has a really big family, with his iconic triplet nephews and most icon, his trillionaire uncle; Scrooge McDuck. I think there’s a lot to say about Donald duck not just his design and appearances. He is loveable, persistent, passionate and caring duck. Heck I think the one of the best things about him is that he as the fight to be positive, because a lot of people and his iconic bad luck knock him down. And I think that the best thing about him is he never gives up, Mickey on the other hand never has trouble with being positive. I love a fighter and that’s why I love Donald duck.

It was one of those few shows that I watched on RUclips as people uploaded it because it just sort of appeared one day and I didn’t fully trust Disney to release on Blu-Ray or on streaming services.
Donald Duck was somebody I related to immensely as a kid. I had communication issues early on in my life (later was diagnosed with autism as an adult) and due to my frustrations of not being understood I had a short temper and would lash out. Knowing there was a character out there, even as a cartoon one who's not real, made me feel I wasn't alone. Donald & Goofy are the best Disney characters of all time
Donald is by far my favorite Disney character--I have to say that the new Ducktales design is my favorite (something about the black sailor suit is so sleek!!)

Same here in Germany. But there is one question I never got an answer for. Why is his clothing black in comics. I never saw him wearing black in cartoons? Maybe there's someone here who knows more about this.
Great video Dave! Donald Duck is one of, if not my favourite classic Disney character. It was very interesting to see all the changes the old duck went through that I had no idea about! Excellent work as always, and keep it up!!

I just discovered you today, excellent work, new subscriber.
ah Donald Duck! he has a very special place in my heart as I used to draw him professionally for European Donald Duck comic releases (60% covers 20% 3 panels and 10% other) well, my point is there's is an earlier version of Donald in an early Mickey cartoon as one of the unnamed barnyard animals here the duck sports a Mickey Mouse-esk short he has wings huge eyes and spiky webbed feet
donald in mickey mouse clubhouse is the realist character when he saw a planet that looked like mickey he says "mickey mickey mickey its always about mickey" and another time he was sat on by a horse he says "why does this always happen to me"
I can see your point mostly becauce Micky is just too good and almost "perfect". Unlike Donald who have clearly Big bad traits (His legendary short temper and bad luck of course) he have some good traits which makes him far more relatable
Also unlike Mickey, he had to work hard with his own bad luck (as of the classic op didn't ring it), even against the likes of the triplets, his uncle scrooge, or even cousin Gladstone. But that trait shows that he's a very determined character who's devoted to his loved ones and himself
I was exposed to Mickey through television, but Donald Duck made my childhood through his comic book features in Vietnam. He was super popular back then to the point of having fanclubs, and he still is now.
I've always loved the "Moving Day" 1936 Era with the squash and stretch I trounced for the characters. These were my favorite designs of Mickey, Donal and Goofy and I've always loved this Era cartoons the most!
Der Fuehrer's Face and the Three Caballeros have always been my favorites. Donald was meant to be frustrated every man. He shows us that we may not always come out on top but, that doesn't mean we should stop trying.
We need a feature length film like the old shorts, because these guys suprisingly haven’t been in many movies for the recognition they have throughout the world
I love Donald far more than Mickey Mouse. He has some bad traits. He has a bad temper. He can be mean, and greedy. Yet , he can be kind, and caring. Donald is more like us, with some good, and some bad traits . I find Mickey Mouse to be far too good. Also one-dimensional.
As I said in this video, this video is not about every single appearance of the character ever and certainly isn’t about every single costume he’s ever worn. It’s about the most important moments in the evolution of the character’s design.
Carl Barks stories really made me understand and love Donald. He's struggling to survive, and raise his nephews. He sometimes thinks he knows all the angles, but can be tricked sometimes. He deals with the ups and downs of life, only on a slightly more exaggerated scale. Donald is a web-footed every man in Barks stories.
My dad used to do a really good Donald Duck impression when I was a kid since I really liked Donald..his temper tantrums where the absolute highlights of any short..I personally like any of the shorts where he is the antagonist against Chip and Dale, the slapstick in those are some of the best.
Donald has always been my favorite Disney and overall cartoon/comic book character along with Spider-Man. I grew up in the 70s and 80s so that's my favorite version of the character. I do prefer him when he's happy though because when he's mad it makes me feel sorry for him.
Although i love every Donald as a long time fan, I must say my favourite is 2017 Ducktales cause not only his design was cool, they also showed us a more complex and retrospective aspect of Donald. Personally loved how he started working on his anger issues in therapy in order to be a good parental figure to his nephews. That episode made me emotional. This was a great video btw, thank you!
Donald Duck is my BOI, my godparents used to put on VHS classic Disney shorts whenever I stayed over & while Goofy was funny, Donny always had the best gags
Donald Duck was really first introduction to Mickey. He was my first Disney love and gave my world new vision with Donald in Mathimagic Land and the Three Caballeros.
The donald evolution of the 30s was great, it was peak expresive donald. However, my favorite design is the Ducktales2017 version in which he uses the black sailor uniform from the barks/rosa comics. Plus, personality-wise, dt17 donald is caring, empathetic, a great dad and still really fun slapstick-wise.
I'd like to see more Donald/Daffy crossover. Interesting thing. On occasion, Daffy has actually flown like a real duck. As far as I know, Donald has never taken to the air.
I absolutely LOVE Donald Duck! He's just slightly below my all-time favorite Disney character, Goofy. My favorite shorts are the classics that feature Mickey, Donald, and Goofy! I can't pick between those wonderful shorts! I also really like the new Micke shorts in the newer style.
This here is a Great Donald Duck Follow-up.It's always interesting to know new trivial details like when some characters appear prior to their otherwise thought of debuts.
I love Donald Duck. Even though he doesn’t appear much in this movie I absolutely loved Duck Tales Treasure of the last lamp, growing up. I watched it so many times. I still have it on VHS
Disney was part of my childhood and so was Donald Duck whenever I'm laughing or watching him in House of Mouse and probably Kingdom Hearts and his video game.
Despite his iconic bad luck and semi intelligible voice. Donald has always been the character who’ll never back down from anything regardless of the obstacles he faces. He is also very relatable cause he has many bad traits that most people have along with good traits as well. He may be short tempered on the outside, but on the inside he is very loving and caring towards the people he loves and will do anything to protect them. I always felt that Mickey had a very one dimensional personality which is why I’ve always liked Donald more. Especially when I started following the Ducktales franchise. As for the design, I seemed to like him best in his comic design with the black sailor outfit with yellow buttons, red bow tie and blue beret.
Favorite Donald Duck appearance? Well... It is not every day you get to see Donald Ducks super hero alter ego in powered armor fighting aliens, but in PKNA (Paperinik New Adventures), that seems to happen more than usual. So the PKNA Donald Duck would be my choice. Would love for PKNA to get an animated treatment.
Donald is my ALL time favorite classic Disney Characters of all. I still enjoy Mickey but my two are always going to be Donald and Goofy. My favorite all time theatrical short of Donald Duck is "Modern Inventions" from 1937. I love all the neat looking inventions that are made up. Some of them look like they could be made since of the 21 centenary. But my all time favorite Mickey, Goofy and Donald short will always be "The Lonesome Ghost." Gets me to laughing everytime.
It is very hard to pick a favorite moment when talking about my all-time favorite cartoon character! But I would say it might be any time during his early years, between his debut and his post-war era.
Its so nice to see that Donald's iconic temper tantrum still cracks me up. I don't know if it's the same for new generations, but he seems to have held up quite well over the years.
I loved Donald Duck in the cartoon Soup's On. It was where the nephews tricked him into thinking he had died so they could hog all the dinner. I loved the part at the end where he was so mad at the boys that he'd turned into a devil! And I loved the cartoon where he was screaming at Harpo Marx and Harpo put him in his place!
He is my favourite and since playing Dreamlight Valley I’ve really started collecting more Donald merch…cups, totes, water bottles…I’m a it obsessed with the cute little duck.
one of my all time favorite DD moments is in Mickey and the Beanstalk when he loses his mind after he looks at his thinly sliced beans and bread and goes after the cow.
Great history lesson about Donald Duck! Thank you. Amazing how overwhelmingly he out shined Mickey Mouse in the amount of shorts produced. Here in Sweden, Donald Duck (Kalle Anka) is a big thing. The main face of Disney and far more popular than Mickey Mouse. The Donald Duck comic is one of the biggest prints and the traditional Disney show on Christmas eve broadcast on our main channel is called "Kalle Ankas jul" (=Donald Duck's Christmas). :-)
Thank you! It's pretty crazy -- but Disney realised there was no love for an innocent little mouse (or, a child as Walt as he saw him) during wartime, and audiences wanted heroes, characters who would stand up against the world, and not someone who couldn't do anything. It is quite remarkable how Mickey never really recovered from then on though. It's so wonderful how huge Donald is in Europe - definitely has to do with the enormous popularity of the comics.
Not only is he the best Disney character but in my opinion probably the most powerful, I mean just watch any episode of the new Ducktales with him losing it, once he's angry he can take down anyone and anything, you just don't fuck with the duck!
Not just in DT17. Hell, DT17 nerfed him and made his fighting style stupid. In his older cartoons and newer Mickey Mouse shorts, he's destroyed a city, punched out sharks, and lifted up trees.
I like Donald best with a blue jacket with yellow lines, yellow buttons, blue hat and red bowtie. It gives him a healthy variety of colors. The other ones all look a bit pale to me.
I actually have many of the Disney video games to thank for my interest in these classic shorts and how they evolved. A personal favorites, for Donald, are as Detective-slash-Ninja Maui Mallard in the game of the same name, and of course a zipper-clad wizard in a certain game about keys ;D
his old suit with white hat is my favorit clothing for him. I realy liked him in Duck Tales and Quack Pack i must say that i like the style in the new Duck Tale
Wow, this must have taken you ages to put together, thanks Dave. I didn't realise that Donald had appeared in so much. I also never noticed any changes in his appearance either (I guess I'm just not very observant lol) take care mate.👍😀👍
Yeah, took a few days to put together mate! Glad you enjoyed it! I think the fact you didn’t notice any of the changes is great, they try to do these things slowly, without audiences knowing. I learned a little myself researching this one.
My favorite donald appearance is in an old vhs I used to own as a child. I remember walt disney speaking in the beginning about christmas and i think there were three stories, mickey sells his harmonica to something for minnies necklace, while she sells her necklace for a box for mickeys harmonica. Goofy and kid max with pete telling max theres no santa claus and donald with his nephews going sliding and ending with a terrorized house. It's my favorite because it's one of the few good memories I have about christmas

I agree.
Missing one iteration with a lot of zippers here
Mickael Frimann we don’t do that here
@@joeye1015 Doesn't mean there shouldn't me a small shout out.
As I said in this video, this video is not about every single appearance of the character ever and certainly isn’t about every single costume he’s ever worn. It’s about the most important moments in the evolution of the character’s design.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder I thought it was pretty big with how much it's shown up but I suppose that's just my opinion.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder I mean you had quack pack in there Also KH3 just came out so pretty relevant. But still a great video
Donald is like Ash
Many years in existance, yet never ages
You can say that about any classic cartoon character...
@@damandelorean except Goofy... He aged backwards
They’re my personal favorites too
Donald has always been my favorite Disney and overall cartoon/comic book character along with Spider-Man.
Imma be honest the original donald design kinda scared me
I liked it
Thank you, SO MUCH, for keeping me company! 💞
He is just SO creepy to me, I don't know if I can face him right now. 😔
I love Donald Duck his outburst always made me laugh as a kid. The fact that we can also understand his duck talk is cool 😁
Yes! I love Donald Duck!
Me too
I always found Duck Duck’s personality more interesting and entertaining than Mickey Mouse.
I'm amazed on how many times his costume got redesigned. Didn't notice some of them at all, good job with the video man😁😁
I'd like to see more Donald/Daffy crossover.
I still have it on VHS
honestly the first-very early design of donald are super cute, I kinda prefer it tbh.
I’ll be honest, I grew up seeing Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Donald, so I’m always a big fan of his design there. I think it’s the best one.
Me even tho it was german dub and I think that was the first catoon with that ver.of Donald
When about his outfit for me that are most iconic that will be his light blue suit and red bow tie
Disney was part of my childhood and so was Donald Duck whenever I'm laughing or watching him in House of Mouse and probably Kingdom Hearts and his video game.
My favorite Disney character! Love Donald Fauntleroy Duck!
How many years before that inevitable Goofy video? Cos lets be honest, he's the best one 😊
He’s next, and I ain’t waiting for an anniversary 😉
I love Donald Duck too
Favorite Donald Duck appearance?
I Love The -Quiet- Donald Duck!
(Also, My Favorite Appearances Of Him Are The Newer Ones Where He Has Pie Eyes!)
"Donald and Pluto" were on a Donald Duck VHS that I used to watch a lot when I was little! Didn't know it was that old!
“Modern Inventions” was actually a Mickey Mouse cartoon reused as a Donald Duck cartoon even though Mickey is not featured in the cartoon
It is very hard to pick a favorite moment when talking about my all-time favorite cartoon character! But I would say it might be any time during his early years, between his debut and his post-war era.
I can't believe how many years it's been since I've watched Donald Duck shorts with Chip N' Dale growing up.
Its so nice to see that Donald's iconic temper tantrum still cracks me up. I don't know if it's the same for new generations, but he seems to have held up quite well over the years.
Always love a good Donald tantrum.
Kingdom hearts 😊😊😊😊
Satanen Perkele no you suck
@@SatanenPerkele your mom sucks
what about it?
@@Inkipitinkis I don’t really care for Kingdom Hearts.
Donald Duck clothing
Normal wear = Pants off
Swimwear = Pants on
Outside of Gyro and Launchpad. It seems like no male duck in the Disney universe wears pants.
I love Donald Duck.
I want Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2.
Those scenes between Daffy and Donald and Mickey and Bugs were epic.
Thank you so much for this!!
Thank YOU for watching!!
I remember watching Donald Duck and its one of my favorite Disney character
He is my favourite and since playing Dreamlight Valley I’ve really started collecting more Donald merch…cups, totes, water bottles…I’m a it obsessed with the cute little duck.
Amazing work dude. Must've took forever to make this!! Keep up the hard work!!
Thank you!
Who else is here for Donald's 90th birthday?
Here
I am also taschen is going to do an ultimate history book of Donald duck this November I don't know when it's coming out though
I like the Ducktales 2017 design
I'm a little offended you didn't include kingdom hearts Donald duck. It's very important to his evolution
It’s not really though.
I love the sailor uniform with the red bow tie. and in one movie ,the three musketeers I think, I loved his costume.
Mickey was never the main Disney character to me. Donald was always number 1.
one of my all time favorite DD moments is in Mickey and the Beanstalk when he loses his mind after he looks at his thinly sliced beans and bread and goes after the cow.
Thanks for you heart Dave Lee I love your video
Thank you!
@@DaveLeeDownUnder I am a 9 year old girl from Mexico who can speak English well, I am your fan
Not only is he the best Disney character but in my opinion probably the most powerful, I mean just watch any episode of the new Ducktales with him losing it, once he's angry he can take down anyone and anything, you just don't fuck with the duck!
There's also him using Zettaflare in Kingdom Hearts, which makes him stronger than Bahamut, who is the most powerful summon in Final Fantasy.
Not just in DT17. Hell, DT17 nerfed him and made his fighting style stupid. In his older cartoons and newer Mickey Mouse shorts, he's destroyed a city, punched out sharks, and lifted up trees.
Donald Duck with the chipmunks are my fave.
Every Style of Donald Duck is a Masterpiece , Because It's Donald Duck
💘💘💘
Donald Duck is my favorite Disney character I have many Donald Duck pins
I actually consider Donna Duck to be Daisy’s sister or cousin.
Me too.
Consider donna duck as ex of donald duck
I love 1936 design of Donald. I hate they changed to 3D. 3D is so lifeless.
2d cartoons are way better than 3D cartoons
My mom told me that she should’ve named me « Donald Duck » because of my uncontrollable temper tantrums as a kid
Your mom is epic
It will 2034 by the time he turns 100
Loved Duck Tales!!!:)
I love him I even learned his voice impression
Awesome!
Donald Duck is by far my favorite Disney character. Mickey is fine and all but just like the audience of the 40s Donald is who I gravitate to
Donald duck in Mickey's service station is funny
his old suit with white hat is my favorit clothing for him.
I think a lot of people like Donald because he's not scared to be mean. Like Mickey can be mean but like not like Donald and he's worldly.
I like Donald in every drawing style except at the beginning because the beak is so long
And his head is too short, it's creepy! 😖
