  • EXPLAINING DISNEY #13
I take a look at the evolution of Pete / Peg Leg Pete / Pistol Pete / Putrid Pete, the arch rival of Mickey Mouse, Disney’s longest active character and oldest villain, right from his first appearances in the Alice Comedies, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Mickey Mouse shorts from 1925, right through to his modern day CG look.
I take a look at how Pete evolved alongside Disney’s other popular characters, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Chip An Dale and how Disney animators changed his look, appearance, personality and even species over time - as a follow-up to my previous videos “Evolution of MICKEY MOUSE Over 90 Years (1928-2018) Explained”, “Evolution of DONALD DUCK Over 85 Years (1934-2019) Explained”, "Evolution of GOOFY Over 87 Years (1930-2019) Explained”, “Evolution of MINNIE MOUSE Over 91 Years (1928-2019) Explained”

Pete was my grandfather. He used to tell stories about his Hollywood days. He was really a gentle soul, didn't care for his onscreen image, which caused little children to run away when they encountered him on the street. A master of dialects, and a talented physical comic, who did his own stunts which unfortunately led to major jount pains in his later years. I still have one of his prosthetic legs.

This reminds me of when I was little and asked my mom why Pete sometimes had both legs and sometimes he didn't. Instead of telling me "It's just a cartoon, don't think about it", she told me “Maybe he uses a prosthetic leg but he keeps breaking it because he's clumsy"

Considering the fact that in both early mickey and oswald shorts, he would keep getting stuck on holes with it, that makes sence
Although it dosent help oswald actually RIPED it off and socked pete with it in a few lantz shorts, that could also be the reason why. It's too loose now

Pete is the weirdest character. He always pops up as the bad guy or as a bad neighbor in goofy or mickey mouse films/series. But besides him being bad we never actually know anything about him, he has a son in some instalments, that's it(as far as I remember). In the goofy movie I recal him being friend with goofy but he's still shady and uses goofies kindness in that movie sometimes(?).

Think of it like Ned Flanders and Homer, except Homer is Pete. Goofy is just living life doing what he knows and Pete's there to crush him because he's too happy. Pete Junior (PJ) and Max are best friends, so Pete and Goofy end up spending a lot of time together, against Pete's wishes.

His father was a bear and mother a cat ( check out her prison photo from Mickeys 3 musketeers) and has a lot of her traits. As he grew, his bear like features changed into catlike, so his mothers genes took over as he got older.

It's a type of primitive carnivores, more cat-like ancestors, very little known, the Viverridae family or civet & gennet family (formerly it included also the meerkats and moogoses, and even the Madagascar fossas, but later it was settled they belonged to other different, but closely-related carnivore families, Herpestidae mainly). The catbear/binturong is very little known but he is the largest member of this type of cat-like primitive carnivore ancestors. Pete could fit so well with it, if only the binturong were actually a more known species, and there couldn't be known for Disney that it ever could exist for real!!

What's really interesting to me is that sometimes in those later cartoons Oswald and Pete would work together rather than be rivals - even being western outlaws together in one short. I did not know there was a cartoon where he appeared as a rabbit, too.

It's really disappointing that the Kingdom Hearts games really fail to utilize the Disney characters very well. Donald and Goofy get good use, sure, but most of the other characters like Pete end up being shafted before anything interesting can happen with them.
I think KH2 did a good job with introducing Pete, and he had interesting confrontations at Yen Sid's tower, The Underworld, and most importantly Timeless River. But then after that, it just seems like they didn't have anything interesting for him to do, which carries over to KH3 as well. He's printed as an important villain in these games, but really all he has is a tiny bit of screen time.
The only other memorable thing he did in these games is try to get an award by lazily helping townsfolk in a selfish way, which ended up resulting him being thrown in a secluded void to reflect on his actions. After that, he's just there, not even offering a whole ton for his appearances.
It's not so surprising that KH wasn't included in these videos to begin with, with the way they tend to be treated as characters if they're not Goofy or Donald.

I always loved Pete as a kid! “Pete the bulldog” is what my family always called him when we used to watch Disney films. I remember Pete especially from “A Goofy Movie”, and how he once appeared as the Ghost of Christmas Future in “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”. I love cats, and I’m a major cat person, but... never, ever will see Pete as a cat! Because I just cannot see it... I will always personally see and define him as a bulldog. Or maybe a “beardog”? 😆
I think it’s very strange and rather preposterous that Disney kept on “switching around” his species, when Pete always totally resembled and acted like a burly, bear-like dog... Hence, bulldog all the way. I agree with everyone here who sees him as a canine, be it a wolf, bulldog, or pit-bull, and I’m glad I’m not alone!
Pete just doesn’t possess ANY believable or visible feline features at all - he’s extremely canine or caniform (and bears happen to be caniforms, interestingly, so that just makes sense...) There are myriads of dog breeds with pointed ears, and his droopy, fleshy jowls, rather grotesque facial features, and big round nose give him obvious bulldog-like looks. Cats have gracefully pointed faces, dainty features, and small triangular noses. I see dog and bear in Pete - no cat. Also, it makes sense that Pete would truly be a caniform (not a feliform), seeing as he was originally depicted as a bear. He is shaped like a big clumsy, chubby bulldog, or a bear.
Really, I suppose Pete is some kind of weird chimera!? Disney is more confused and undecided than a chameleon in a bowl of Skittles! Poor Pete... He’s a great bully bulldog! I’m seriously just settling with bulldog/bear hybrid as my headcanon. Come on, Disney... That’s no cat. Hehe. :P

I think all Walt meant by that is that the cornerstone of the success of the Disney studio rests on the shoulders of Mickey Mouse. The Oswalds and the Alices were never popular cartoons, they were disposable shorts shown at the beginning of b-movies, and forgotten. If it weren't for Mickey Mouse - whose cartoons were a cultural phenomenon, Disney wouldn't be what they are today. In fact, if not for Mickey, it's pretty likely all the early Alices and Oswalds wouldn't exist any more.

@@DaveLeeDownUnder I can see the logic there, so thank you for your insight. I have seen a 1923 Alice short (yes, from before Pete's first appearance), and this was branded as a "Laugh-O-Gram." I have also watched a 1922 pre-Alice, pre-Disney Company, "Laugh-O-Gram" of Cinderella. These were just some extra features from the Alice in Wonderland DVD and the Cinderella DVD, respectively.
I guess some people at the company had to digitally restore the original films before they were disposed, but it is quite interesting to see how Disney's animation evolved from the "Laugh-O-Grams," to Alice comedies from when the Disney Company was founded, to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and finally to Steamboat Willie and Mickey Mouse.

The Oswald incarnation of Pete almost kinda looks a little like Mortimer Mouse to me. Loved the video. It was interesting finding out that Pete first had a role as a neighbor about 40 years before Goof Troop.
BTW, would you do an evolution of Mortimer Mouse sometime? I'd be really interested in the history of that character.

Pete in Germany is actually called Karlo. Cat Karlo.
edit: Actually this makes me think a lot about how names influence how you perceive a character. I'd have always assumed that Karlo is a mobster (partly because of his name Karlo sounding somewhat Italian) and I also knew as a fact that he was a cat. But looking through the comments there are loads of people who see him very differently from me.

I remember watching very old Disney cartoons on a VHS tape as a kid , I believe it was Mickey's Crazy Careers and has Pete as the " villian" in several of them and he was always kind of portrayed as a bully type sheriff or construction foreman chomping on his cigar and throwing his weight around. He was hilarious, he was also based on a stereotype of a type of person that most certainly does exist. I have worked for years in Forestry and Construction industries and have met many tough guy, cigar chomping sorts and always start giving them the nickname "Pete" and it always sticks.
Anyways....a great a.memorable character. This was an awsome video.
